    OBITUARY
    John H. Hinkle, 83, died at his home on the Kings Springs road, Johnson City, Tennessee at 9:30 Friday evening.
    Funeral services will be conducted from the Sinking Creek Baptist church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30. Interment will follow at the Happy Valley Memorial Park. The Rev. E. H. Brandon will officiate assisted by the Rev. Clarence Nelson.
    Surviving children include E. W. Hinkle, Sweetwater, Tenn., Mrs. S. J. Lewis, Mrs. W. B. Buckles, Carter, Mrs. Maude Frye, C. C. Hinkle and Fred Henkle, Johnson City; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
    Pallbearers will be J. W. Wagoner, C. Garland, A. R. Taylor, T. J. Higgins, Haynes King, Harry Haynes.

    EDWARD HINKLE, 73, Succumbs
    Edward Carter Hinkle, 73, died unexpectedly at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Annie Cornett, 316 Friday Street, Thursday at 10:10 a.m. He was a member of the Methodist Church and formerly served as constable for 32 years of the old 7th district.
    He is survived by two sons, Worley F. Hinkle of 104 Donna Avenue, and James Chrisley Hinkle of 206 Graham Avenue; three daughters, Mrs. Annie Cornett, Elizabethton, Mrs. Hattie Vance of Bristol, and Mrs. Erma Crowe of Siam Road; 11 grandchildren; three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Perry and Mrs. Minnie Teague both of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Sannie Taylor of Johnson City; and one brother, William Hinkle of Elizabethton.
    Funeral services will be conducted at the Wesleyan Methodist Church Saturday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Robert E. Rice officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery.
    The body will remain in the chapel of the Tetrick Funeral Home until 12:30 p.m. Saturday when it will be moved to the church.

    VIRGIL HINKLE
    Funeral services for Virgil Hinkle, 52, who died at the Grace Hospital in Banner Elk, N. C., Saturday morning, were held at the Freewill Baptist Church here yesterday afternoon at three o'clock. The Reverend Clarence Howington officiated. Interment was in the Highland Cemetery.
    Hinkle is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Dave Gallihier, Mrs. Ina Nell Harrison and Hannah Hinkle; two grandchildren, Bettie Harrison and Paula Gallhier; three brothers, Charlie Hinkle of Marshall, N. C., Ed and Will Hinkle of Elizabethton; three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Perry of Elizabethton; Mrs. Tom Williams of Johnson City and Mrs. Jeff Teague of Hampton.
    Pallbearers will be Roby Mast, Harry Bowers, Maple Carriger, Evans Collins, Frank Minnick, Hacker Carriger. Honorary pallbearers: E. C. He was formerly a guard at the State Penitentiary, Petros, Tenn., a magistrate and deputy Sheriff in Carter County for 16 years, also Clerk and Master for the County. He was a member of the Hunter Memorial Baptist Church. A Native and live long resident of this county, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mollie Bowers Oliver in 1940. Survivors include three daughters, Miss Grace Oliver, 418 N. Main Street, Elizabethton; Mrs. Sophia Hardin, Route 5, Elizabethton; and Mrs. Ama White, 110 S. Pine Street, Elizabethton; one son, Albert E. Oliver, 112 W. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton; 17 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren, on great great grandchild also survives. Tetrick Funeral Home in charge.

    Oliver - Funeral service for Charlie Oliver will be help 2 p.m. Sunday from the Hunter Memorial Baptist Church. Officiating will be Rev. W.W. Ward and Rev. R.G. Blackburn. The body will remain in the Tetrick Funeral Home Chapel where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and will be taken to the church at noon Sunday.     Mrs. W. B. Buckles, age 65, of route 5, died in St. Elizabeth Hospital Tuesday morning after a lingering illness.
    Mrs. Buckles was a member of the Stoney Creek Baptist Church.

    Funeral services will be conducted Thursday afternoon at 2 p.m. from the Stoney Creek Baptist Church with Rev. Ed Burnett, Rev. Allen Richardson and Rev. E. F. Drayne officiating.
    Music will be under the direction of Miss Helen Herman.
    Burial will be made in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    Funeral services for Grace Oliver, 89, formerly of rt. 7 Elizabethton, who died Thursday, will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Sunday at Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel with Mr. Richard Thomason officiating. Music will be under the of Sharon Oliver, soloist and Ona Fay Oliver, Organist. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Wilson Cemetery. Gracie was born in Carter County to the late James McCoy Hinkle and Wilma Shaw Hinkle. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Kail Hazelwood; her brother, James Hinkle; and her sisters, Pansy Lorraine Cable, Billie Ruth Sneed and Barbara Jane Pierce.
    Gracie was a wonderful, loving wife, mother and grandmother and was a member of Union Baptist Church. She had worked at Brown’s Hardware in Hampton for over 40 years. She loved watching basketball, especially the Lady Vols and the Hampton Bulldogs. She also enjoyed talking on the phone and working in her flowers.

    Emma Jean enjoyed spending a lot of time in downtown Elizabethton. Many of the merchants she knew first-hand and they knew her on a first-name basis.
    In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Dallas Wayne Cornett, and four brothers, Albert Carter Cornett, Charles James "Baldy" Cornett, "Latcheye" Howard Edward Cornett and Billy Bob Cornett.
    Survivors include two sisters, Earlene Cornett Phillips and husband, Roy, and Joyce Ann Cornett Henson and husband, Jeff; a brother, Floyd "Meatball" Cornett and wife, Gloria; and a special niece, Lisa Marie Roberts Jones.     In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Junior, Albert, Charles, Howard and Billy Cornett; one sister, Emma Jean Cornett Harmon; and by several nieces, nephews and great-nephews.
    Floyd worked at Chemstrand/Monsanto until he retired in 1994. He was then employed at Quest Diagnostics for 23 years until he retired in May of 2021.
    Floyd was an avid Tennessee Vols fan.
    He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Gloria Fay Cornett; his children, Tammy (Craig) Ketterman, Donna Lombardi and Gary Durden; three grandchildren, Chuckie Ketterman, Tiffany Durden and Alex (Rebecca) Durden; two great-grandchildren, Alaska and Ellis; two sisters, Earlene Phillips and Joyce (Jeff) Henson.     A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Fredrick Charles and Annie Amelia Hinkle Cornett. He was as a carpenter, security officer and custodian until his early retirement.

    He was of the Baptist Faith.

    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Junior, Albert, Charles "Baldie" and Howard "Latcheye" Cornett; and several aunts, uncles, nieces & nephews.

    He was an avid fisherman and loved to go camping.

    Survivors include three sisters, Emma Jean Harmon of the home, Earlene (Roy) Phillips, Fall Branch and Joyce (Jeff) Henson, Elizabethton; one brother, Floyd (Gloria) Cornett, Pensacola, Florida; his special friend, Donna Whitehead.

    A Memorial Service will be conducted at 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 14, 2016, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Joel Cook officiating.

    The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday in the funeral home. Friends may also visit with the family at the residence of Joyce & Jeff Henson, Elizabethton.

    Joan previously owned and operated the historic Lincoln Cemetery and Monte Vista Biblical Gardens in Atlanta, GA. She later branched out to Decatur and owned and operated Washington Memorial Gardens and Dawn Memorial Park.
    She was a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was a graduate from East Tennessee State University.
    She was a past president of the Georgia Cemetery Association, Southern Cemetery Association. Joan was the 1st woman to be the president of both the Southern Cemetery Association and Georgia Cemetery Association. She was a member of the League of Women Voters. She was also the first female board member of the prestigious Ravinia club and was the first female member for several significant community organizations.
    She was a trailblazer for many women's association groups and women's rights. She served as the president of the Women's Prestigious Association of Atlanta, Ga. Joan is in the Hall of Fame for the Boys and Girls Club of Atlanta. She was awarded The Outstanding Community Service Award from The Concerned Black Clergy of Metro Atlanta. The Lincoln Family Group was present at the outstanding annual gala and was nominated for this prestigious award by the Reverend Dr. H. Jeremiah Bridgewater Jr.
    She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother Clay Hardin Jr.
    Ms. Sawyer is survived by her son, Jack Frost, II of Atlanta, Ga, and her grandchildren, Shayda Frost of Los Angeles, California, and Parisa Frost of Los
    Angeles, California, great nephew Sergio Montescelis of Newnan, Georgia and a host of their family members and friends.

Nyoka was born in Elizabethton to the late Earl Albert Oliver and Mary Lee (Wright) Folsom. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Richard Silas Shelburne; her daughter, whom she missed terribly, Kathy Jo Shelburne; a sister, Joann (Tom) Vinson; a brother, Warren Oliver; two nephews, Mike Pierce and Richard Shelburne; two sisters-in-law, Freida Oliver and Carol (Bobby) Smith; and a brother-in-law, Bill Shelburne. Nyoka was a wonderful lady and very intelligent. She had been employed within the Senate as an administrative assistant and was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church. Nyoka loved sun-tanning and being by the pool. She also enjoyed playing poker, playing cards with her granddaughter, and reading. Nyoka leaves behind a legacy of beauty and faith and a love for all that were blessed to know her. Those left to remember and cherish Nyoka’s many precious memories include her daughter, Debbie Mariano of Elizabethton; her granddaughter, Jessie Shaffer of Harrisburg, Pa.; two great-grandchildren, Juleyan and Madelyn Shaffer; her sister, Loretta (Dean) Pierce of Elizabethton; three brothers, Albert (Patty) Oliver, Richard (Phyllis) Oliver and Charles Oliver, all of Elizabethton; and five “surrogate” daughters, Carla, Lisa, Cindy, Gina and Bobbie. Phyllis was born in Elizabethton to the late Anders Odell "A.O." Buckles and Daisy Smith Buckles. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Arnold, and her brothers, Troy and Norman Buckles.
    Phyllis was a homemaker and a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. She was an avid reader, gardener, storyteller and sports enthusiast. She was also quite a fact finder and searcher of how things worked. Phyllis and her husband were living examples of the Bible verse, 1 John 3-18, "Little children, let us not love with word or tongue but in deed and truth." Though they did not have children by birth, they were blessed with a parent's heart and love. They became parents to all the children in the family, any they met and any person who needed love, regardless of age. Her life was God's given love of family, friends and children.
    Phyllis is survived by a large extended family.

    Flaura “Jeanette” Campbell, 81, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 25, 2021, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born on November 8, 1939 to the late Roy and Lena Buckles Bowers. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Campbell, and two brothers, Gary Bowers and Dairus Bowers.
    Jeanette was a homemaker who loved to cook and bake for her family. She collected recipes and tried many of them on her family. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister to all her family and will be forever missed.
    Survivors include two daughters, Jewell (Kenneth) Lowe and Leslie (Harold Lynn) Arnold, all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, who she spoiled all their lives, Brandi (Michael) Hartsell, Michael Bowers and fiancée Courtney McCury and Kenny Lowe, all of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Thea and Tegan Lowe; one sister, Judy (Shirrell) Bowers; and three brothers, Randy (Betty) Bowers, Dewey (Judy) Bowers and Willard Loveless, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive as well as her faithful loving grand-pup, “Ranger,” who she adored.
    The graveside service will be conducted at noon Wednesday, April 28, in the Garland Cemetery, Bulldog Hollow Road, with Mr. Kelley Bowers speaking. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons, Kenny Lowe and Michael Bowers; her son-in-law, Harold Lynn Arnold; Joel Kress and Malcom Kress, Larry Bowers and Chuckie Bowers. Honorary pallbearers will be all nephews and nieces, Tommy Campbell, Kenneth Lowe and Shirrell Bowers.

    KNOXVILLE — Deborah Ann Greathouse went home peacefully with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, January 23, 2022 after a courageous battle with terminal inflammatory breast cancer. She was lovingly surrounded by her daughter Jennifer and the incredible University of Tennessee Hospice Care team who diligently and tirelessly cared for her through the duration of the last months of her illness.
    Deborah was born October 7, 1954, and raised as a youngster in Elizabethton, Tenn., and later resided in Atlanta, Ga., San Francisco, Calif., and in Hawaii for much of her adult life. Deborah lived a full and inspirational life. She was a gift to those in need and a compassionate woman who gave tirelessly to others during her own, private lifelong struggle with Crohn’s disease. Deborah went on to earn her B.A. from San Francisco State University and began a career spanning decades. The highlights of her career include working and traveling for McGraw Hill Publishing Company as an executive until her retirement. Her career also included working for a west coast extension of NASA at the Geosat Corporation in San Francisco and she later became a community outreach executive at the ALS Lou Gehrig’s Foundation of San Francisco. She shared her passion tirelessly in caring for and assisting ALS patients and their families. She published caregiving guides and resource manuals for families of ALS and was a strong advocate for community outreach on behalf of the foundation.
    Deborah shared her passion for learning and education in her retired years by working as a substitute teacher for her native Tennessee communities where she inspired students with examples of her art and her worldly European and West Coast travels. Deborah was an avid artist and a photographer. Her paintings have been donated and displayed to community centers, churches, and to the many local communities in which she lived. As a photographer, she enjoyed the processing of original dark room film photography and taking pictures of the many landscapes and people she encountered in her travels. Most of all, Deborah was so proud of her loving granddaughter Lauren.
    Deborah is survived by her loving daughter Jennifer Blatchley, her granddaughter Lauren Blatchley, her close cousins, Jill DelValle and Jack Frost Jr., and by many cousins, relatives, and friends. Deborah’s family were direct descendants of John Oliver, founder of Cade’s Cove Tennessee.
    She was preceded in death by her most loving grandparents, Robert and Alice Markland, and by Sophia and William Clay Hardin Sr., along with her parents, William Clay Hardin Jr. and Loretta Jean Davis of Elizabethton, Tenn. She is also recently preceded in death by her aunt, Joan Hardin Sawyer of Atlanta, Ga.
    Deborah would like to give a very special thanks to the UT Hospice Care team members including Dr. Cynthia Pearman, charge nurse Crystal Welborne, Nurse Practitioner Jordan Massey, nurse Amanda Mayes, nurse Patrick Moore, and care staff Jane Carter. They worked tirelessly to provide comfort and medical care and they went above and beyond the call of duty. Deborah’s daughter Jennifer would like to especially thank Dr. Cynthia Pearman, who gave the precious gift of time with her mother. Deborah also wants to thank Dr. DeVore and Dr. Shoemaker of the Tennessee Cancer Specialist Center. Special thanks to her dedicated local friends Vishal Sharma and wife Parul Kaushal and neighbor Fadia Alvie for all the love made in every dish of homemade soups with assistance in logistics of helping her maintain a peaceful home environment. Special thanks to Bob Gervasio for the lifelong love shown to her. Special thanks to Donna Hopwood and her staff at 24/7 caregivers for being there in the middle of the night. Thanks also goes to her church family, to her Stevens minister Millie, and to Father Christopher Hogan of Episcopal Church of the Ascension in Knoxville. Thanks to all who assisted tirelessly in her many daily battles and struggles with the effects of the cancer and Crohn’s. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Deborah’s name go to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation and to the American Cancer Society. Deborah will be so dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Her words of grace, wisdom, and faith will live on for the surviving generations. “It’s not how you start out in this life, it’s all in how you finish and in the way in which you give the glory to God for all your many blessings.” Private services were held.
