-John Slemp was the third son of John Frederick Slemp and Mary Metz. John was born In Smyth County, Virginia April 8th 1781. His father's will was made and recorded In 1807, This will mentioned by name each of the four sons and five daughters but there is no reference to any of them residing In any other State or County. John would have been 26 years of age at the time of his father's death.

It appears that John went with his two older brothers to Johnson County, Tennessee, USA as he is enumerated in the 1840 Census of Johnson County as John Slimp, Sr then moved to Lee, Virginia, USA before 1850 as he is enumerated in the 1850 Census of Lee, Virginia, USA.

He married Alpha Smyth. Whether he married in Smyth County, Virginia, or while in Johnson County, Tennessee, USA, is not known. He and his wife settled in Turkey Cove in Lee, Virginia, USA sometime between 1840 and 1850. There they reared a family of four sons and three daughters. Their married life covered a period of about a half century. This they lived at one place, adding from time to time more and more land to their original homestead.

John Slemp was reported to be an intelligent, industrious and prosperous citizen. Tradition is that his wife, Alpha, was an attractive, cultured woman and a great influence in building up a splendid family in the Turkey Cove community. It was she and her husband who gave the land upon which the first Methodist Church was built in that section. The original church was destroyed by fire but was rebuilt and lately has been remodeled. It is now a very modern church building and has an active, enthusiastic church membership. It is called "The Seminary" because the old building had school rooms in the second story. Good teachers were employed and for a generation and more and it attracted students from quite a distance. Alpha Slemp "the lady of such beautiful hands", lived to see her pet project bear good fruit. John Slemp and his wife are the first of four generations of Slemps buried in the Slemp Cemetery upon land which he owned and which is still in the Slemp family.-

Sebastian Slemp was the son of John Slemp and Alpha Smyth Slemp. He was born, lived and died in Turkey Cove, Lee, Virginia, USA, He and his wife Margaret Reasor Slemp, are buried in the Slemp Memorial Cemetary. Sebastian was a respected, successful farmer and a leading citizen of his community. He had served one term as Member of the House of Deligates and was making a campaign for State Senator, when due to exposure he contracted pneumonia and died at the early age of 48. His wife was a widow for some twelve years before passing away at age 60.

DAVID J. SLIMP
David J. Slimp, 89, of Neva, Tenn., died at his home Wednesday morning at 12 o'clock.
Surviving are five children, Stacy Slimp of Butler, J. E. Slimp and Mrs. S. S. Stout, both of Neva, Mrs. L. J. Mink of Shouns, and C. F. Slimp of Neva.
The deceased was a member of the 13th Tennessee Cavalry in the Civil War. He was a charter member of the Christian Church of Neva and had been a deacon of the church for 40 years.
Funeral services will be conducted from the late residence this afternoon at 3 o'clock, the Rev. J. N. Shephard officiating. Burial will be in the family cemetery.

Mrs. Caroline Arnold, died Thursday, Aug. 18 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Dottie WILSON at Shouns, following an illness of several months. She was the widow of the late Daniel Arnold
Surviving are the following children: Mrs. Wilson; James F. Arnold, Porterville, Calif., Lloyd Arnold, Portland, Ore., Roscoe Arnold, Tismo Beach, Calif., Luther Arnold, Elizabethton, Tenn., Riley Arnold, Porterville, and Danny Arnold, Neva; one sister, Mrs. Betty Mast, Seattle, Wash., 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Aug. 21, conducted at 2 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, of which she was the oldest member. She joined the church in 1879. Rev. Major Arrowood officiated.

Mrs. John H. Hinkle, age 80, died at 10:30 Friday evening at her home in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Frederick and Naoma Slemp, pioneer settlers of Johnson county.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Sinking Creek Baptist church, this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with interment in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.
Survivors are the husband, John Hinkle of Johnson City; three sons, Edward W. and Clyde Hinkle of Johnson City, Fred Hinkle of Jonesboro; and three daughters, Mrs. W. B. Buckles, Mrs. Stuart Lewis of Carter and Mrs. W. G. Frye of Johnson City.

C. D. Shoun, prominent farmer and citizen of Doe Valley, died at his home yesterday after an illness of several days. Funeral services were conducted from the home this morning. Mr. Shoun is survived by his widow who was Miss Fina Stout, also one son, Hillie Shoun and four daughters, Mrs. Kemp Lowe, Mrs. Hop Brookshire, Mrs. R. B. Walsh and Mrs. Clifton Pierce. C. H. LOWE DIES FROM HEART ATTACK AT LYNN AVE. HOME
Charles Hector Lowe, age 73, adjuster and real estate clerk for the city of Elizabethton, died unexpectedly at his home on Lynn avenue yesterday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock. He succumbed to a heart attack.
Mr. Lowe, prominently identified in religious, civic and political affairs in Johnson and Carter counties for a good many years, had been in declining health for the past week. He had sufficiently recovered so as to be able to be in town the day prior to his death.
Born in Mountain City of pioneer descendants, his family has played an important role in all activities.
For a number of years, Mr. Lowe was affiliated with the affairs of the city of Elizabethton, serving as desk sergeant at the city hall prior to his becoming tax adjuster.
The deceased also taught school in Johnson county, Sullivan county and in Texas in his younger days. He received his education at the Watauga Academy at Butler. For 19 years he served as a traveling salesman and later was in the mercantile business in this city.
He was very active in the First Baptist church of this city, having been affiliated with the church since 1916 and serving as a deacon for the past 20 years.
Mr. Lowe is survived by his widow, Mrs. Martha A. Lowe, two daughters, Mrs. Charles Caroll of Newcomerstown, Ohio, and Mrs. Daniel Trace of Zanesville, Ohio; three sons, Bert of Radford, Va., Ted of Baltimore, Md., and Charles of Elizabethton; two brothers, J. J. Lowe of Erwin, and Judge David Lowe of Lockney, Texas; three sisters, Mrs. John Reed of Butler, Mrs. Charles Anderson of Elizabethton, and Mrs. David Roten of Lingle, Wyoming; also one grandchild, Charles Lowe, III.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. V. Floyd Starke, Rev. E. A. Cox and Rev. Roy Grimsly officiating. Burial will be made in the Walsh cemetery in Johnson County.
The body, which will be removed from the North Funeral Home to the family residence, 413 Lynn avenue, this afternoon at 6:00 o'clock, will lie in state from 1:30 Sunday until time for the funeral.
Pallbearers: Roscoe Ritchie, Robert Pleasant, William Clark, Carl Roten, Maples Carriger, Stanley Lacy, James Miles and B. W. Birchfiel.
Honorary pallbearers: Deacons of the First Baptist church and Calvary Baptist church, Police Department and Fire Department, Crawford Alexander, Bob Johnson, Jr., Dr. J. B. Shoun, Dr. W. G. Frost, L. JOHN A. LOWE DIES SATURDAY
Citizens of Johnson county were saddened last Saturday morning, April 23, when they heard that John A. Lowe had passed away peacefully in his sleep some time early that morning at his home, near Shupe's Mill. He was in his eighty-third year.
Mr. Lowe had, during his long life, been circuit court clerk here for eight years, assistant postmaster at Mountain City for 17 years, taught school in the county for a number of years, and was active in the affairs of the Baptist church.
He was married to Sofia Loretta Wills on April 21, 1887, and Mrs. Lowe preceded him in death in September of 1948.
Mr. Lowe died just two days after what would have been their 62nd wedding anniversary, if Mrs. Lowe had survived just seven months longer.
He was a deacon of the Mountain City First Baptist Church for more than 50 years, during which he had served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent, and as church clerk.
Funeral services were held from the Baptist Church here last Sunday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, with the pastor, Joel H. Ponder, officiating. Interment was in the Phillippi cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers, and members of the Young Matrons Class of the church served as flower bearers.
Surviving are four daughters; Mrs. C. O. Shupe, Mrs. Ethel Goodwin, Mrs. Gertie Fritts, and Mrs. Myrtie Jenkins, all of this community, and two brothers, Alex and David Lowe of Jonesboro. Twenty grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren also survive.

Lowe was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Dewey Lowe and Doran Lowe, both of Mountain City; three daughters, Mrs. Lottie Wilson of Bristol, Mrs. Eddie Wallace of Elizabethton, and Mrs. Adgel Lowe of Mountain City; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
