Andrew Jackson 'Jack' Grindstaff was the son of Rev. Michael Grindstaff (1806-1875) and Mary Jane Goodall (1807-1879). He was the grandson of John Nicholas Grindstaff (1770-1851) and Katherine Sarah Grindstaff (175 - abt 1832). Andrew married Nancy C. Moreland (1833-1917). They were married on July 10, 1853. Andrew Jackson Grindstaff is listed on the 1910 census as Jackson J. Grindstaff, which is an error of the census taker. Andrew died shortly after the census was taken. Andrew and wife Nancy lived in Limestone Cove, Carter County, TN.

KINGSPORT - Mamie Giles, age 98, of Kingsport, went home to be with her Lord on Monday, January 18, 2016, at Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late David and Sarah Elizabeth Price Grindstaff. Mrs. Giles was a charter member of Clifton View Baptist Church, but had been attending Johnson City Freewill Baptist Church. She retired from Magnavox. Mrs. Giles was a loving Mother, Grandmother, and Aunt.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Giles was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Giles, July 1991; eight siblings, Louise Head, Charles Grindstaff, Nola Grindstaff, Susan Britt, Ray Grindstaff, Dewey Grindstaff, Frank Grindstaff, and Minnie G. Whitson.

Survivors include three daughters, Lois Rogers, Surgoinsville, TN, Debbie Fagan, Kingsport, Robyn Hawkins, Johnson City; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren. Several special nieces and nephews also survive.

The family visitation for Mrs. Giles will be conducted from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 20, 2016 in the East Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home with the funeral service following in the East Chapel at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Kenneth Kyker officiating and the eulogy presented by great granddaughter Mary Ann Riddle.

The graveside service and internment will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Christopher Lane, Marty Lane, Marcus Riddle, Bill Riddle, Lee Carter, Dana Rogers, III, and Jeffrey Hawkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Gabe Matthew Millard, Mike Fletcher, and Gary Gilley.

Rev. Croy Nave, 92, 504 Bishop Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Rev. Nave was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Campbell and Katie Estep Nave. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Bowers Nave, September 19, 1972, and a son, Robert Nave.
Rev. Nave was a member of and also served as pastor for several years at New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and a former employee of Paty Lumber Company.
Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Frances Nave, June Nave and Carolyn and Archie Martin, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Willie L. and Ruth Nave and Earl E. Nave, all of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Chester Nave, Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Chester Nave, 95, of 250 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 21, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Nave was a native of Carter County and was the son on the late Robert Campbell & Mary Kate Estep Nave.
He was retired from Bemberg, had worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, and was a former part time employee of Tetrick Funeral Home. He was a member of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Nave enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking photographs.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Nave was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Chambers Nave on June 13, 2005, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Campbell of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Faye Nave of Inverness, Fl; one grandson, Steven Campbell of Elizabethton, one granddaughter and
grandson-in-law, Kathy and Kenny Clifton of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton, Taylor Clifton, Dawson Clifton and Kindra Campbell all of Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Nave will be conducted on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel in Elizabethton with Rev. Derl Curry and Mr. David Tysinger, Minister officiating. The Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel prior to the service or at the residence, 250 Keenburg Road at other times. The graveside service and interment will be Sunday, December 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Emmert Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Estep, Carl Burrough, Willie Nave, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton and Kenny Clifton. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church, friends and neighbors and the 3rd floor nurses at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Funeral service honoring Eola D. Nave was held on Monday, December 30, 2013 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton.

The graveside service and interment was conducted at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 at Old Horseshoe Cemetery.

JOHNSON CITY - Carl Tilson Head, 91, Johnson City, passed away Sunday, September 5, 2021, at The Waters of Johnson City.

Mr. Head was a lifelong native of Johnson City. He was a son of the late Elbert and Louisa Head.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, having served in France.

Mr. Head was a retired employee of Klopman Mills, where he worked for 40 years.

He was preceded in death by: his dear wife, Florence, in 2003, after 54 years of marriage; three sisters, Florence Head, Hattie Castell and Mandy Highler; and four brothers, Cecil, Kenneth, Rollie and Larry Head.

He is survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews; life-long friends, Jack and Betty Tester; and special friends, Jeff Lewis and Kathryn Ralston.

Special thank you to Mr. Head’s friends at Maple Grove, Longhorn Steak House and Bob Evans.

A committal service will be held at 11 AM Saturday, September 11, 2021, at Roselawn Memory Gardens.

Mary Lou Grindstaff Haun, who loved to be called “Momma” by her kids, departed her loving family on August 12, 2021.

Mary Lou was born in Johnson City, TN on February 10, 1947, to Pearl Tipton Grindstaff and Ray Benton Grindstaff.

Mary Lou was mother to Rex Grindstaff, Jennifer Williams, Richard Haun and Randy Haun with love and devotion in Johnson City, TN.

Mary Lou was retired. She enjoyed spending time with friends, crafting and doting on her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. Her family was her greatest joy.

She is survived by her children Rex, Jennifer, Richard, Randy (Leigh) grandchildren Shae Allen, James (T.J.) West (Maddi), Gabe Grindstaff, Gracie Grindstaff, Megan Haun and Jake Haun, great grandchildren Atticus and Warner West. She also loved and was loved by her nieces and nephews.

Aside from the children, Mary Lou is survived by her siblings Sarah Lee Tipton, Gail Lawson, Sandra Hamilton, and Allen Grindstaff. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her parents and brothers R.B. Grindstaff, Dale Grindstaff and sister Wanda Beals.

Shirley Faye Grindstaff Taylor, 75, of Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 1, 2022, at The Waters of Roan Highlands in Roan Mountain, Tenn., following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was surrounded by her family and love at the time of her passing, with her husband, only daughter, and sister by her bedside.
The daughter of the late Vester and Iva Lee Grindstaff, Shirley was born January 4, 1947, in Elizabethton and was raised in Stoney Creek in Blevins Hollow. Her family later moved to Dejarnette Street in town. She attended Midway and East Side Elementaries, T.A. Dugger Jr. High School, and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1965 with honors.
At EHS she met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, S. Joe Taylor. They were married December 20, 1966, at East Side Baptist Church. While Joe was in the U.S. Army, they moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., where Joe completed training as part of the dental corps. After Joe completed his military service in Vietnam, they moved to Dallas, Texas, where Joe attended mortuary school and Shirley worked at Baylor Hospital. A trusted and meticulous financial planner, Shirley specialized in accounting and banking positions throughout her career in Athens and Elizabethton, Tenn. As Joe worked at Bordwine Funeral Home in Etowah, Tenn., and later returned home in 1980 to manage Tetrick Funeral Home for nearly 40 years, Shirley helped support him by assisting with secretarial work on weekends, writing and faxing obituaries and making sure Joe and his co-workers always had a hot meal, no matter what time of day or night, and made sure that Joe’s dress shirts and suits were always meticulously pressed and starched. Shirley loved having married into the large Taylor family, where she was a favorite aunt and sister-in-law, and for decades never missed sending a birthday, anniversary or graduation card to every family member.
After praying for a child for nearly 20 years, Shirley gave birth to her miracle daughter, Jessica Leanne Taylor, on June 16, 1985. Jessica was Shirley’s pride and joy and the light of her life, as anyone who met her or talked to her knew. She was a completely devoted mother who truly found her calling when Jessica was born. She was a full-time mom and shuttled Jessica to school, piano lessons, and church.
At East Side Elementary, Shirley served as PTA president and treasurer and was a room mother. Shirley was devoted to helping improve the Elizabethton City Schools, and she helped spearhead the fundraising campaign that built a new band room at T.A. Dugger Jr. High. Full of pride for Jessica, who played the French horn, Shirley also served as president and treasurer of the Band Boosters and chaperoned band trips to competitions and to Disney World. She was an avid Betsy Band and Cyclone Football fan, and also loved watching University of Tennessee football and Lady Vols basketball. When Jessica decided to attend Furman University in Greenville, S.C., Shirley and Joe made frequent trips to visit her and basked in the beautiful campus. After Jessica moved to the Washington D.C. area to pursue her dream career in political journalism, Shirley and Joe visited at least every other month and enjoyed seeing the historic monuments and museums. Shirley bragged about Jessica’s accomplishments, and in her meticulous style, printed off every article Jessica wrote and recorded every television and radio news appearance. In celebration of their 50th anniversary in 2016, Joe, Shirley and Jessica took a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands, a wonderful adventure and family time that came just months before Shirley’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis.
Shirley was a devoted and active member of Grace Baptist Church, and a faithful Christian woman who awoke early every morning to read her Bible. She served as church treasurer for several years and on various other committees. Shirley volunteered during VBS and weekly in the nursery, where she delighted in cuddling the newborns and celebrated children in the church and their growing faith in the Lord. Shirley and Joe were previously active members at North Etowah Baptist Church in the 1970s. Shirley also served as the financial secretary of the Watauga Association of Baptists for 18 years before retiring in 2018.
Survivors include her beloved husband of 55 years, Joe Taylor, of the home; her pride and joy, best friend and daughter, Jessica Leanne Taylor, of Alexandria, Va.; and a sister, Judy Ann Walker, of Glade Spring, Va. Shirley is also survived by four brothers-in-law and sisters-in law: Dr. Bob and Joan Taylor of Indianapolis, Ind.; Janet and Dr. David Reed, of Springfield, Tenn.; Mike and Peggy Taylor of Piney Flats, Tenn.; and Ken and Barbara Taylor of Hermitage, Tenn. Several nieces and nephews also survive. She was also beloved by special friends, Jean and Buddy Bowers, Lynne and Jack Hamilton, Linda and Dennis Bordwine, Janice and the late Wayne Murray Sr., Trilla and the late Buddy Little, and the late Rev. Ron Owens and Judy Owens. She also delighted in her “granddog” Smokey, who she lovingly called “Smokebug.”
The Taylor family would like to thank the nurses and staff at The Waters of Roan Highlands for their excellent care of Shirley for the past five months; to Amedisys Hospice; and extends their gratitude to in-home caregivers, Phaedra Navin, Angela Buchanan and Ginger Mercer.
The funeral service for Shirley Taylor will be held on Wednesday, July 6, at 7 p.m. at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton in the Chapel of Peace. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. before the service or at the residence anytime. The Celebration of Life will be under the direction of Dr. Travis Tyler, with special words from Rev. Jason Wilkerson and Mr. Dennis Bordwine. Music will be under the direction of Debbie Gouge and Laura Seagroves. A graveside service for Shirley will be held Thursday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Home National Cemetery Historic Section, 53 Memorial Avenue, Mountain Home, TN, 37684. Those who wish to attend should meet at the cemetery in Johnson City at 10:45 a.m. The service will be under the direction of Rev. Dean Smith, with special music from beloved nieces, Amelia and Reagan Brown. Pallbearers will be Jay Michael and Jackson Taylor, Wayne Murray Jr. and Anthony Murray, Jay Walker and Bill Carter. Honorary pallbearers are Richard Tetrick and the staff of Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton. ELIZABETHTON - Willie Nave, age 90 of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Croy and Virgie Nave. Willie was the last remaining of his siblings. He was employed at H.T. Hackney Company for 65 years. He was very hardworking, generous and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Willie was very dependable and well respected. He was a member of Eastside Freewill Baptist Church for 40 years. During various portions of that time he held the responsibility of Treasurer, Youth Director and Choir Director. He also held these responsibilities at East Fairview Freewill Baptist Church earlier in life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tina Hyder; step-granddaughter, Sharon Griffith Compton; son-in-law, Larry Shorter; and grandson, Curtis Blaine Hyder, Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Ruth Nave, of the home; son, Gary Nave (Mary), of Las Vegas; daughters, Pat Shorter and Patricia Bradford (Billy), both of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Heather Bradford Merritt and Michael Nave; great-grandchildren, Emily Merritt and Austin Hyder; five step-granddaughters, Sandy, Susan, Nikki, Summer and Lindsey and several step great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Sue Nave Martin, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Croy Luther & Virgie Bowers Nave.

Carolyn was a substitute teacher with the Carter County School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Frances Nave and June Nave and two brothers: Robert Nave and Earl Nave.

She was a member of the New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church.

Her grandchildren was her hobby.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years: Archie “Micky” Martin. One Daughter: Melissa Buckles & husband Timmy. Four Grandchildren: Shyann Rogers, Evan Rogers, Gabriel Buckles and Titus Buckles. One Brother: Willie Nave & wife Ruth. Several nieces & nephews. Her special friends: Michael Rogers and Ashley Garland.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Garland officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 in the Nave Cemetery (Bishop Hollow).
