Notes:

Leonard Lacey Hughes, age 80, of Roaring Creek, entered into his heavenly home Monday, Dec. 31, 2018. He was the son of Sid and Verna Hughes.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Josie Hughes of the home, and by his Children: Kitty Shook and husband, Larry, and Dawn Carpenter and husband, Mike.

Also left to cherish his memory are Grandchildren: Hansel Allen, Ashley Dollar, Elijah Carpenter, Gus Carpenter; Great-grandchildren: Tristan Vance, Chelsea Clark, Makendra Allen Arnett; Great, Great-granddaughter, Abigail Arnett; Brother: Earl Hughes and wife, Pat, of Roaring Creek and Sisters: Helen Banner of Newland, Sandra Hughes and husband, Douglass, of Roaring Creek, and Janice Bailey and husband, Joe, of Marion. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son: Leonard Lacey Jr., and Brothers: Johnny, Otha, Rathie and JD Hughes.

Leonard's great joy in life was his family. He was a loving husband and wonderful father. He was an awesome grandfather, great-grandfather and great, great-grandfather. He helped raise his grandson Hansel as his own and loved him with all his heart. Leonard loved life and having a good time. His warm smile and fun loving ways never left him even while his health was declining. He would often get the doctors and nurses laughing even when he wasn't feeling well.

The other joy in Leonard's life was going to church. He went to church faithfully until his health would no longer allow.

The family would like to thank everyone at Cannon Memorial Hospital. During Leonard's illness, we were treated like family and blessed with kindness, caring and compassion in every department. We would also like to acknowledge the dedication of his brother Earl and wife, Pat and sisters: Helen, Sandra, Janice and husband, Joe, who stood by him through his sickness. We would also like to thank nieces Jenny Hughes and Libra Hughes for everything they have done.

A visitation will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5, at the People's Church on Roaring Creek. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. immediately following visitation. Committal services will be conducted at the church. Rev. Chris Nance and Daniel Nance will officiate.

Joseph married Willie Mae Stanley about 1935. Mollie Hughes McKinney, age 84, of Whitaker Branch Road, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2019 at Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Sarah Hughes and wife of the late Tommy McKinney, who passed away in 2015. She was also preceded in death by a Grandson: Christopher Buchanan and a Sister: Jo Mae Hughes. Mollie was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed sewing and gardening.

Left to cherish her memories are her Daughters: Carolyn Jones and husband, Dickie, Barbara Buchanan and husband, Colin, and Robin McKinney and Burl Farmer, all of Whitaker Branch Road; Siblings: Paul Hughes and Ford Hughes, both of Morganton, and Patsy Brewer of Roaring Creek; Grandchildren: Carol Ann Johnson and husband, Justin, and Eddie Jones; Great-grandchildren: Logan Johnson, Layken Johnson, Landon Johnson, Lillyanna Johnson, Lennon Johnson, Makenna Buchanan and Lexie Buchanan. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, in Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Allen Laws and Pastor Cameron Dula officiated. Burial will follow in the Buchanan-McKinney Cemetery. Pallbearers were Dickie Jones, Colin Buchanan, Justin Johnson, Logan Johnson, Landon Johnson and Eddie Jones.

Barbara Sue Hughes, age 76, of Spruce Pine, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 16th, 2014 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Daddy Joe and Mama Willie Hughes. She was also preceded in death by an infant sister, Lucille Hughes; sister, Shirley Robinson and brother, Kenneth Raymond Hughes. Barbara Sue was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church who's life was loving her grandchildren.

Surviving is a daughter, Julie McCurry of Spruce Pine; son, Rick Penrod and wife, Tammy, of Lily Branch; four grandchildren: Cody Buchanan, Skylor McCurry, Joseph Richard Penrod and Savannah Marie Riggs; one great-grandchild, Isaiah Buchanan; two sisters: Louella Singleton and husband, Eddie, and Lila Vance and husband, Butch, all of Stamey Branch; three brothers: Maynard Hughes and wife, Reneth, and Sanford Hughes and wife, Jackie, all of Spruce Pine and Stan Hughes and wife, Amy, of Virgilina. A host of nieces and nephews also survive.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 19th at Whites Memorial Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman will officiate.

Maynard Earl Hughes, age 76, of Ingalls, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept 16, 2018. A native of Avery County, he was a son of the late Joe Earl and Willie Mae Hughes. He was also preceded in death by a son: Tony Hughes; siblings: Kenneth Hughes, Shirley Robinson, Sue Hughes and Sanford Hughes. He was a US Army Veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. Maynard was a member of Whites Memorial Baptist Church who loved fishing, hunting and wild flowers.

Surviving is his loving wife of 51 years: Renate Hughes; daughters: Sylvia Jones and husband, Greg, of Spruce Pine, and Manuela Sparks and husband, Jerry, of Spruce Pine; grandchildren: Samantha Canipe and husband, Scott, of Spruce Pine, Seth Hughes and fiancée, Lorie, of Burnsville, Justin Hughes and wife, Kristen, of High Point and Paula McMahon and husband, David, of Ohio; great-grandchildren: Collin and Miriam Irick of Ohio, Macie Hughes of High Point and a great-grandson on his way; siblings: Lila Vance and husband, Butch, of Pyatte, Louella Singleton of Buck Hill and Stanley Hughes and wife, Amy, of Clarksville, Va; sister-in-law: Jacque Hughes of Spruce Pine and a brother-in-law: Fred Robinson of Marion. A host of nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. David Troutman and Dr. Darrin Waldroup officiated. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the services at the church. Graveside services were held at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20, in Whites Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Sparks officiating and military honors conducted by Sgt. E.L. Randolph Chapter #57 D.A.V.

Lila Gail Hughes Vance, age 67, of the Pyatte Community, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Edisto Beach. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Joe and Willie Mae Stanley Hughes. She was also preceded in death by a Son: Thad "Bodie" Vance, who passed away in 2011; two Sisters and Three brothers. Lila enjoyed working in her flowers, singing, but most of all spending time with her grandchildren, who were her pride and joy.

Surviving is her loving Husband of 46 years: Herbert "Butch" Vance, Jr.; two Sons: Kris Vance and wife, Jane and Garren Vance and wife, Jena; Granddaughters: Kadance, Carly, Kendall, Maddox and Lennox; Sister: Louella Singleton; and Brother, Stanley Hughes and wife, Amy. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, at Big Meadows Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor Keith Russell, Pastor Josh Calvert and Pastor Wesley Duncan will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
