WILLIAM ROGER FARTHING
William Roger Farthing, 35, died suddenly at his home in Prospect, Virginia Sunday at 4:45 a.m. He had been in poor health for the past five months.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Virginia Lowe Farthing; one daughter, Judith Ann Farthing; one son, William Roger Farthing, Jr., all of the home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Farthing of Neva; three brothers, Joe and Robert Farthing both of Neva; and Tom Farthing of Farmville, Virginia; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Irene McQueen and Mrs. Glenn Crowe both of Elizabethton; Mrs. Dana Greene of Shell Creek, and Miss Joyce Farthing of Neva and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Emma Slemp of Neva.
The body arrived in Bristol this morning and was brought to Elizabethton by the Tetrick Funeral Home where it will remain until Tuesday afternoon when it will be removed to the home of the father in Neva.

Mr. George David Farthing, 90, of Vilas, the Bethel community, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2005, at the Watauga Medical Center.

He was born Nov. 20, 1914 in the Bethel community to William Young and Naomi Perry Farthing.

Mr. Farthing was a graduate of Bethel High School. At an early age he joined Bethel Baptist Church.

As an active member, he served on various committees, including 20 years service as church treasurer.

From 1943 to 1954 he owned and operated the Watauga Telephone System. In 1954 he sold the system to Skyline Telephone Membership Corporation, but continued to operate his system until 1957, until Skyline had their system ready to go into operation. In addition to operating the telephone system and a grade A dairy, he did much community work, serving as presiding officer of the Bethel Community Club and the Beaver Dam Grange.

He was known to be the best neighbor in the community. When others needed assistance, or just to borrow a piece of machinery, they knew they could always call on Mr. Farthing.

Graveside services were conducted at the Winfield Scott Farthing Cemetery.

Kizzie Mae Farthing Martin, 85, of 2320 W. CR 6, Tiffin, Ruffing Family Care Center, died March 16, 2003, in Mercy Hospital of Tiffin. She was born Dec. 13, 1917, in Sugar Grove, Watauga County, NC. She married Henry M. Martin Jr. in Athens, Ala., on Feb. 2, 1946. They were married for more than 57 years. She was a high school graduate and completed two years of business school. She worked on the atomic bomb at Oak Ridge, TN. She was a homemaker and a member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her husband, Henry M. Martin, Jr.; a son, Milton (Susie) Martin of Fresno, CA; a daughter, Becky (Tom) Shaver of Tiffin; a brother, Edmund (Hazel) Farthing of Sugar Grove, NC; three sisters, Alpha Perry of Mebane, NC, Lennis Efstation of Burnsville, NC, and Jodie (Oran) Dugger of Burnsville, NC; four grandchildren, Cliff Adams, Jenny Citty, Blaine Martin and Matt Shaver; three great-grandchildren, Jacob Adams, Jimmy Citty and Kizzie Citty.

Preceding her in death were her parents, and a brother, Blaine Farthing.

Funeral services were held at the Hoffmann-Gottfried Funeral Home, officiated by Jim Martin. Burial in Seneca Memory Gardens.

Edmund Jones Farthing, Jr., age 96, of 1526 Bethel Road, Vilas, passed away Monday morning, June 6, 2016, at Watauga Medical Center.

Mr. Farthing was born February 24, 1920 in Watauga County, a son of the late Reverend E.J. Farthing, Sr., and Lula Greene Farthing. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served during World War II. He was a farmer, and was a deacon and the oldest living member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Mr. Farthing is survived by his wife of 73 years, Hazel Cable Farthing; one son, Len Farthing and wife Brenda of Vilas; two daughters, Debbie Farthing of Asheville, and Patti Hensley and husband Keith of Vilas; one daughter-in-law, Shirley Farthing of Easley, South Carolina; two grandsons, Joel Farthing and wife Nicole of Vilas, and David Lance Farthing of Easley, and two granddaughters, Amanda Huff and husband Todd of Deep Gap, and Cora Hensley of Vilas. He is also survived by a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Lance and Byron, his father and mother, Reverend E.J. Farthing, Sr. and Lula Greene Farthing, four sisters, Alpha Perry, Lennis Efstation, Kizzie Mae Martin and Jodie Dugger and one brother, Blaine Farthing.

Funeral services for Edmund Jones Farthing, Jr., will be conducted Friday afternoon, June 10, 2016 at 4:00 o'clock at Bethel Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, at the church, from 2:00 until 4:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Reverend Harold Bennett, Reverend Toby Oliver, and Reverend Ethan Greene. Military graveside rites and burial, provided by the United States Army, American Legion Post 130, and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in the C.S. Farthing Cemetery at the Farthing homeplace.

Jodie Farthing Reese Dugger, 90, of Burnsville, passed away Saturday, October 4, 2014, at her home.
A native of Watauga County, she was a daughter of the late Rev. E. J. and Lula Greene Farthing. She was also preceded in death by her husbands: Asa L. Reese, Jr. and Oran H. Dugger; an infant son; a son: Michael Reese; stepson: Larry Dugger; 3 sisters: Alpha, Kizzie Mae and Lennis; and a brother: Blaine. Jodie grew up in the Bethel community of Watauga County. A graduate of Mars Hill College, she was a riveter during World War II on the P-47. She and Asa L. were house parents at Crossnore School for 13 years. Jodie and Oran became residents of Burnsville in 1992 and she had been an active member at First Baptist Church since.

Surviving are her children: Marilyn Robinson of Burnsville, and Asa Lowell Reese of Tryon; a daughter-in-law: Mary Ann Dugger of Columbus, Ohio; 7 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; a brother:Â Edmund Farthing and wife, Hazel, of Vilas; and, a special friend: Gordon MacFarlane.

A graveside service will be held at 3PM Wednesday in the Farthing Family Cemetery in Vilas.

A celebration of life service will be held at 2PM Saturday, October 11, 2014, at First Baptist Church of Burnsville. Rev. Tommy James will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Mrs. Loy F. Farthing, 91, of Bethel Road, Vilas, the Bethel Community, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 3, 2006 at the Watauga Medical Center.

She was born Dec. 25, 1914 in the Bethel community of Watauga County, a daughter of Herbert "Bert" and Stella F. Farthing.

Mrs. Farthing attended Appalachian State Teachers College. She did substitute teaching and served on the Watauga County High School Committee. Through her efforts the Grange was introduced into Watauga County and she served for 20 years as secretary of the Beaver Dam Grange.

She was very active in community service and helped with cemetery work. After her correspondence with Governor Scott and the state highway commissioner, Mrs. Farthing was instrumental in getting the first paved road through the Bethel community.

At an early age she joined Bethel Baptist Church and was a long time active member. She served as a Sunday school teacher, treasurer, choir member and as director of Vacation Bible School for several years.

Survivors include one daughter, one son, four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and two sisters.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George David Farthing; and two brothers, Dr. Barton R. Farthing, who was chairman of the Department of Statistics at Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, La., and William (Bill) G. Farthing of Boone.

Services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Bethel Baptist Church, officiated by Dr. Charles McKnight. The body will lie in state at the church from 1 until 2 o'clock. Burial will follow in the Winfield Scott Farthing Cemetery in Bethel.

NEWPORT NEWS - Jo Farthing Polhamus Smith of Newport News died Wednesday, November 4, 2015 at age 92. Jo was born July 23, 1923, in Watauga County, NC, to the late Herbert and Stella Farthing, the youngest and last surviving of their five children. After graduating from Bethel High School in Watauga County, Jo earned a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from The Woman's College of UNC (now UNC-Greensboro) in 1944.

This degree led her to a job with NACA (predecessor of NASA) as a "computer" at Langley Research Center in Hampton. At NACA she played on the women's basketball team coached by young aeronautical engineer Edward C. Pollhamus, and they were married in October of 1945. Jo and "Eddie" had four sons: Edward C. Polhamus, Jr. (wife Linda) of Danville, William F. Polhamus (wife Linda) of Roanoke, and twins David and Daniel who died in infancy in 1960. After Eddie's death in 2001, Jo married widower G. Bernard Smith, who died in 2009. Jo and Eddie were active members of North Riverside Baptist Church for almost fifty years. Jo was most active in the WMU and in the church library. Bernard and his first wife Jean were also long-time active members of North Riverside, so Bernard and Jo continued that involvement to the extent permitted by their health. Jo also did volunteer work with Meals-on-Wheels, at Riverside Medical Center, and at the Virginia Baptist Home in Newport News, which was expanded to become The Chesapeake retirement center, where Jo lived from 2003 until her death.

In addition to her sons Ed and Bill, Jo is survived by step-children Dick (wife Joann) Smith of Williamsburg and Kim (husband Craig) Moore of Poquoson, Ed's sons Winston Polhamus of Virginia Beach and William (wife Tara) Polhamus of Midlothian and their mother Sheila Rust of Roanoke, Bill's sons Brian Polhamus and Scott Polhamus of Roanoke, Ed's step-children Devin Laflamme of Danville and Brenda (husband Adam) Taylor of Danville, and Kim's three sons of Poquoson. Jo's great-grandchildren include Cole and Josie Polhamus of Midlothian, along with Delaney West and Ava Taylor of Danville. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, and her church family. Jo loved all of her family deeply and continuously.

A memorial service for Jo Farthing Polhamus Smith will be held at North Riverside Baptist Church, 311 Selden Road, Newport News, on Saturday, November 7, at 2:00 P.M., with a private burial at a later date. The Polhamus family would like to thank all the staff at The Chesapeake who served Jo so faithfully for 12 years, the staff of W. J. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by the mother of his children, Barbara Joan Price Fenner Summerow; his son, Terry Wayne Fenner; four sisters, Linda, Ruth, Ann and Helen; and four brothers, Bob, Gene, Samuel Jr. and Paul. William started and operated his own business, W.G. Fenner, Inc. in 1959. As the owner and operator, William had installed bowling alleys all over the world, including Anchorage, Alaska, Scotland, Bermuda, Puerto Rico, New Mexico and at the White House. William had worked for AMF prior to starting his own business. William was a proud United States Marine veteran but above all else, he was a proud and loving father. He was very devoted to his children and took great pains to show them his love every day of his life. William was of the Baptist faith and loved to travel, in fact, he had visited every state except for Hawaii. He liked racing and was an avid sports fan and loved watching the Atlanta Braves, the Yankees, and the Green Bay Packers. William loved everyone and was loved by everyone. Those left to remember and cherish William’s memory include his son, William Fenner Jr. and wife Penny; three daughters, Kathy Melton and husband Rick, Connie Gray and husband David, and Willie Whitson and husband Gary; his grandchildren, Ginger, Tara, B.J., Ricky, Ashley, Torie, Chelsea, Brandon, Allison, Cindy, Peyton, Bryson and April; several great-grandchildren; his brother, Dr. David Fenner; and several special nieces and nephews. A celebration of William’s life will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, May 15, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Rev. Tim Gouge officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Zion Church Choir. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m., prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Jon Shell, bagpiper, will provide music at the graveside. ELIZABETHTON - Kit Carson McQueen, age 78, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at his home. Kit was born in Johnson County, Tennessee to the late Walter Eli McQueen and Mary Irene Farthing McQueen. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Mary “Midge” McQueen; a son, Kit Brian McQueen; and a great grandson, Timothy James Vaughn.
Kit was a loving father, papaw, husband and brother and a member of Big Springs Church of Christ. He was self-employed and a bus driver and a member of the Moose Lodge and the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge. Kit enjoyed camping with family and traveling the country.
Those left to cherish Kit’s memory include one son, Christopher Gene McQueen and wife Dorothy; a daughter, Donna Vaughn and husband Jimmy; his grandchildren, Channa Williams, Brandi (Donny) Estep, Josh (Cassie) Vaughn, Skylar McQueen and Christian McQueen; four great grandsons, Ky-Ream Desselle, Edgar Estep, Oliver Vaughn and soon to be, Owen Vaughn; one brother, Walter Porter McQueen; a sister, Margaret Hughes; and a lifelong friend, Tommy Lyle.

Larry Glenn Crowe, 77, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed from this life on December 1, 2019.
Larry was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church, Elizabethton. He loved God, and his family, and also his job driving the bus for the Elizabethton City School System. His hobbies included going to athletic events, talking about his bus, and the weather.
He was preceded in death by his father, Glenn Crowe, his mother, Ruth Elizabeth Crowe, and two of his brothers, Michael and Randy Crowe.
He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Gwen, and children, Charlie (Erika) Eric, Evan (Alexandria) and Benay; grandchildren, Skyler, Natalie, Chloe, Olivia and Isaiah Crowe; brother, Terry (Ruth) Crowe; and several nieces and nephews.
Our thanks to the Elizabethton City Police and Carter County Rescue Squad, the ER Staff at Sycamore Shoals and the medical team in the ICU at JCMC Heart Hospital.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Hunter First Baptist Church on Friday, Dec. 6, from 2 to 6 p.m. Larry was a full body donation to Restore Life USA and a private burial will be held at a later date.

ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Randy Steve Crowe, 71, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord, on Friday, December 1, 2017, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

He was the son of the late Glenn and Ruth Farthing Crowe and was born in Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Crowe.

Mr. Crowe was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from Tri-State Air Cooled Engines where he was a manager for forty-seven years. He also owned his own small engine repair shop. He taught small engine repair at Science Hill High School and also at the Herman Robinson Vocational School. He was a mason and a member of the Dashiell Masonic Lodge #238 F & AM. He loved cooking and gardening, especially growing tomatoes and cucumbers. He was a fan of UT football and also of the Lady Vols basketball team. Mr. Crowe was a loving husband, father, grandfather and was good to everyone he knew. He was a member of Big Springs Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, of fifty-two years, Brenda Emmert Crowe of the home; a daughter, Melissa Crowe Buxton and her husband, Don, of Jonesborough; a son, Nathan Crowe, and his wife, Rachel, of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Thomas Buxton and his wife, Tiffany, of Kingsport; Kelby Buxton, of Jonesborough; two brothers, Terry Crowe, and his wife, Ruth and Larry Crowe, and his wife, Gwen, all of Elizabethton. A special friend and first cousin, Kit McQueen and a special friend, George Morton also survive, along with several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Crowe will be conducted on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Brother James Vaughn officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11:00 AM – to 1:00 PM prior to the service on Wednesday.

The committal service will follow the funeral service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Thomas Buxton, Kelby Buxton, Chris McQueen, Jimmy Vaughn, Jimmy Mock, Roger Crowe and Brian Crowe. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Anna Joy Baird Penley, age 93, Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, May 7, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center.

Mrs. Penley was born September 18, 1928, in Watauga County, NC, and the daughter of the late John Frederick & Letha Ann Yates Baird. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Penley in 1998, son, John Frederick “Freddie” Penley, one granddaughter, Letha Marie Snodgrass and several brothers and sisters.

She was a member of Boone Trail Baptist Church.

Mrs. Penley was a Registered Nurse and had worked at Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Johnson City Medical Center before retiring.

Survivors include four children, Dale Penley (Paula), Johnson City, Cecilia Ann Simpson (Roger), Gray, Vanessa Snodgrass (Billy Joe, Jr.), Hickory, NC and Terri Greenwell (Jack), Bluffton, SC; three sisters and one brother; eight grandchildren, Justin Penley, Daniel Simpson, Amanda Simpson, Lauren Bassett-Penley (Daniel), Blake Penley, B.J. Snodgrass III (Morgan), Lashay Dulaney (Robert), and Katie Greenwell (Stephen); and six great-grandchildren, John Conley Snodgrass, Ryan Jennings, McKenzie Dulaney, Logan Dulaney, Raine Bledsoe and Mattie Bledsoe.

Graveside services will be conducted 11:00 AM, Friday, May 13, 2022, at Washington County Memory Gardens with Pastor Jody Jenkins officiating.

KINGSPORT - Mr. Charles “Yates” Baird, age 78, Kingsport, passed away Saturday, August 13, 2022, at Orchard View Rehab Center.

Mr. Baird was born in Carter County and the son of the late John Frederick & Letha Ann Yates Baird. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sue Garst Baird.

He was a United States Air Force Veteran.

Mr. Baird was a retired mechanic for the Kingsport Press.

Faye B. Williams, age 74, of Piney Flats, TN., passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at Johnson City Medical Center. She was born on February 24, 1946 in Piney Flats, TN, a daughter of the late Carl and Laura McGuire Baird. Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by four brothers; three sisters; and one son-in-law, Kevin Snow.

Faye was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was a lifelong resident of Piney Flats, TN. She was a member of Piney Flats First Baptist Church for many years.

She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Gene Williams; daughters, Linda Williams Snow and Lea Ann Williams Rasar; grandchildren, Zachary Snow and Presley Anna Rasar; siblings, Shirley Thomas, Bill Baird and wife Yvonne, Lawrence Baird and wife Aurelia, Kay Warren, and Sharon Blevins and husband Luke; and several nieces and nephews.

Moveta K. Baird, Barlow age 79, of 5787 Highway 67 West, Mountain City, Tennessee went to be with her Lord on Friday February 22, 2019 at her residence. Moveta was born on June 13, 1939, in Mountain City, TN to the late Byron Baird and Myra Buchannan Baird. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband Earnest Gibb Barlow, and sisters Marilyn Vaught, Marietta Forrester, and brothers, Charles Jody Baird, and Denver Baird. She Loved Witnessing for the Lord, singing with her nursing home ministry, flower gardening, music.

Selma Patricia 'Pat' Farthing Kirby, age 77, of Vilas, North Carolina, took up permanent residence upstairs on Friday, June 14, 2019. She was born on July 13, 1941 to the late Dr. BR Farthing and Selma Thomas Farthing. In addition to her parents, Pat was preceded in death by a brother, Barton Farthing.

Those left to cherish her memories include her husband of 36 years, Dean Kirby; one son, David Farthing; two daughters, Lora Chapham and Crystal Farthing; sister, Teddie Stewart and husband Dennis; nephew, Andrew Stewart; niece, Lydia Pract; two wonderful kitty cats; special friends, Ed and Ellen Roark.

Pat was employed by Appalachian State University for 41 years as a Professor in the Library. Her one goal in life of teaching was to make a difference. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church of Vilas, NC, where she served as librarian. She also loved singing in the church choir.

Pat enjoyed riding her ATV and being the co-owner of Dean Kirby's ATV Rental. Most of all she loved being Dean's wife.

The family will receive friends from1-2:30 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2019 at the Bethel Baptist Church, Vilas, NC. Funeral service will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Toby Oliver and Pastor Derek Wilson officiating. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Farthing Family Cemetery. Harrison Hill Farthing, 81, passed away on July 10, 2022, at Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born on November 1, 1940, in Banner Elk, NC to the late Homer and Deane Farthing. He lived in Butler before moving to Elizabethton where he spent most of his life.

Harry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1958 and East Tennessee State College in 1962 with a BS in Biology and Geography. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Elizabethton. He served in the US Navy on the USS Willis A. Lee as a Radarman. He worked at North American Rayon Corporation as an Assistant Manager, and then at Beaunit at Research Triangle Park in Durham, NC as an electron microscopist and the Department of Human Services as a Counselor.

Harry married his high school sweetheart, Sue, on December 21, 1962. They were blessed with two children, Harry Lee and April, and 59 wonderful years together.

Harry was an avid bird watcher and a talented nature photographer. He enjoyed sharing his photographs with friends and family and appreciated them being posted on the Naturalist’s Notebook Facebook page. Dr. Frank Barclay and Dr. Lee Herndon were influential in his love for birds and flowers.

He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

Survivors include: his wife, Charlotte Sue Farthing; brother, John Farthing (Betty); children, Harrison Lee Farthing (Melinda) and April Farthing Taylor (Duane); granddaughters, Hannah Gibson (Dallas), Keely Brock (Josh), Holly Navas (Scott) and Sydney Farthing; great grandchildren, Ava and Knox Gibson, Levi and Laken Brock and Zane Navas; sisters-in-law, Pat Payne (Sandy), Kathy Nunamaker (Lawrence), Dottie Peters and Janet Denny; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Harry appreciated all of the healthcare workers that participated in his care, and the family says thank you to them because they are all heroes.
