Lemiel L. Pleasant, 69, died at his home, 114 H street, early this morning.
Funeral services will be held at the Calvary Baptist church Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, with the Rev. B. R. Lincoln, the Rev. John Bowery, the Rev. Paul Roberts officiating. Interment will be in the Rambo Cemetery at Doeville.
Mr. Pleasant is survived by his widow, Mrs. Nannie Pleasant; four daughters, Mrs. F. BEN H. PLEASANT
Ben H. Pleasant was born Dec. 12,1888; died March 4, 1946. He professed faith in Christ in 1932, and belonged to the Doe Valley Baptist Church until his death. He was married to Hina[sic] Lowe on April 22, 1916. Mrs. Pleasant preceding him in death on March 2, 1930. To this union eight children were born; four having died in infancy.
Surviving are: Mrs. Doran Lowe, Mountain City; Mrs. Cecil Cornett, Kingsport; Charles of the navy and Estol of the army.
Mr. Pleasant was married to Belle Lowe in 1930, and she, too, preceded him in death, August 9, 1941. Four children were born to this union: Pansey and Roxie Pleasant and Bennie and Joe, all of Mountain City.
His aged mother, Mrs. Sidney Pleasant, Johnson City, survives; also three sisters, Mrs. R. A. Lee, Mountain City; Mrs. Sallie Blevins, Coal City, W.Va., and Mrs. Lula Kirby of Johnson City. Two brothers are left: Dan of Olympia, Wash., and Rance of Indiana.
A granddaughter and a number of nieces and nephews are also left to mourn his passing.
The death angel has again visited and taken from his church and community a valuable member and citizen.

died at the home of Mrs. Ross Grindstaff, June 5, following a three-week illness. She was the widow of the late David R. Robinson, a native of Johnson county and a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, E. G. Robinson of Butler, Dewey Robinson of Athens; one daughter, Mrs. Chelsie McQueen of Butler; two half-brothers, Clate and Halbert Pleasant of Dallas, Oregon; one half-sister, Mrs. Nellie Blevins of Johnson City; 20 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Sunday at Little Doe Baptist Church at 2: 00 p.m. with Rev. C. O. Binkley and Rev. S. D. Hart officiating. Rev. Ben Woods was in charge of the music. Pallbearers were H. C. Grindstaff, Tommy Collins, Klan Pleasant, Olan Rambo, Bob Slimp, Tilley Stout, Karl Pleasant, Ed Arnold. Burial was in Rambo cemetery. Hill Funeral Home in charge.

Mrs. W. B. Robinson, passed away at her home at Niota, Monday, Nov. 11, at the age of 73 years, of a heart attack.
She was a daughter of the late W. H. and Mrs. Pleasant of Doeville. Surviving is her only child Mrs. Myrtle R. Spur; five sisters, Mrs. D. R. Robinson, Mrs. J. H. Robinson and Mrs. W. B. PROMINENT DOEVILLE MAN DIES
R. B. Pleasant, 53, prominent Johnson county merchant, died this morning at eight o'clock in a local hospital after a prolonged illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Little Doe Baptist church at Doeville, Wednesday afternoon at two o'clock with the Rev. John W. Crowe officiating. Interment will be in the Rambo cemetery.
Mr. Pleasant, a native of Johnson County, was the son of W. H. and Martha L. Pleasant. On Feb. 1, 1906 he was married to Miss Vena Pierce, also of Johnson County.
For the past 43 years he was in the mercantile business in that county, operating his own store for the past 35 years. Prior to that he was employed by Wright and Southerland of Mountain City, and Rambo and Pleasant of Doeville.
A few years ago, Mr. Pleasant gained nationwide recognition as the father of the O. K. family, all of his daughters' names beginning with O. and containing three letters, while all of his sons' names begin with K and each contain four letters. Their pictures and accompanying stories were carried in many well-known newspapers in the country.
Mr. Pleasant was affiliated with the Little Doe Baptist church and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. He was one of the most influential citizens of his community and took active interest in all civic and religious affairs.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Vena Pleasant; three daughters, Mrs. Ola Kyte, Mrs. Ova Stalcup and Miss Ola Pleasant of Doeville; six sons, Kyle Pleasant of Willits, Calif., King Pleasant of Dallas, Oregon, Karl, Kale, Keys and Klan Pleasant of Doeville; four sisters, Mrs. H. L. Nave of Elizabethton, Mrs. Julia Robinson, Mrs. R. A. Blevins, and Mrs. Myrtle Arnold of Doeville; three brothers, Walter Pleasant of Elizabethton, Hubert Pleasant and Clate Pleasant of Oregon; two half-sisters, Mrs. Rachael Robinson and Mrs. Sallie Robinson of Sweetwater; and one half-brother, Will Pleasant of Doeville.
Active pallbearers will be Chester Davis, Ed Rainbolt, Roby Jones, Homer Stalcup, Olan Rambo and Bob Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will include Harley Hopkins, Arvil Allen, Clay Davis, Guire Robinson, Wilder Arnold and W. J. Estep.
Those who will care for the floral offerings will be Mrs. Callie Allen, Mrs. Bertha Rainbolt, Mrs. Maud Stout, Mrs. Argil Rambo, Misses Wanda McEwen, Grace Rainbolt, Elsie Davis, Arada Davis and Fred Davis.

Walter B. Pleasant, age 48, died at his home, 302 Doe Avenue, Thursday night at 10:25 o'clock after an illness of two months.
Mr. Pleasant was a member of the Masonic Lodge at Mountain City. He was a merchant in Elizabethton about eight years, but retired about a year ago. A son, Jack L. Pleasant, was killed in Italy November 12, 1943.

Jacob H. Lowe, age 83, died last Friday at 4 o'clock at his home near Alvarado, Va., where he had lived for more than 50 years.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Belle Lowe, and the following children: Mrs. Bertha Phillips, New Town, Pa., Mrs. Charlie Cummings, Damascus, Ben Lowe, Deadwood, S. D.; W. McKinley Lowe, Alvardo. BUTLER — Klan Butler “Jiggs” Pleasant, 79, 649 Old Highway 67, Butler, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 16, 2004, at James H. Quillen V.A. Hospital. A lifelong resident of the Doevile Community, he was the youngest son of the “O.K.” Pleasant family. Jiggs was born May 29, 1925, to the late Roderick Butler and Vena Alice Pierce Pleasant. He was a member of Little Doe Baptist Church and retired as an electrician from North American Rayon Corporation. Mr. Pleasant served in the South Pacific in the Navy as a motor Mechanist. He received the Philippine Operation Medal, a Victory Bronze Star, American Theatre Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Medal during World War II. He served in the Johnson County Rescue Squad for twelve years. He was preceded in death by a son, Randy Butler Pleasant; two sisters: Ola Kyte and Ova Stalcup; five brothers: Kyle, King, Karl, Kale and Keys Pleasant. Survivors include his wife, Faye Robinson Pleasant, of the home; two Daughters and Sons-In-Law: Diana and Earl Howard Jr., of Shady Valley, Evelyn and Mark Thomas, of Meadowview, VA.; four grandchildren: Wayne Thomas and wife, Guia; and Tuesday Pope and her husband, Nat, Randy Pleasant Jr. and Joseph Howard; One Sister: Ona Long, of Butler; Two Sisters-In-Law and One Brother-In-Law; Several Nieces and Nephews. Her lov-ing Veteran Hus-bands, Robert Gen-try and John Long, also pro-ceeded her death.

She was an avid stamp col-lec-tor, loved cook-ing, and help-ing her com-mu-nity in many ways. She was de-voted to her Fam-ily and spe-cial Friends, and was stead-fast in her be-lief in God, Coun-try, Friends and Fam-ily.

Sidney E. Pleasant Sr., 76, of Cocoa, FL, passed away on Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Wuesthoff Hospital in Rockledge, Florida.

Mr. Pleasant was born in Carter County, TN, but had lived in Florida since October of 1960. He was the son of the late Walter B. Pleasant Sr. and Sana Church Pleasant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Walter B. Pleasant Jr., William H. Pleasant and Jack L. Pleasant; and one sister, Ruby Pleasant Moore.

Mr. Pleasant was a retired police sergeant and was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Clearlake Baptist Church in Cocoa, FL.

Survivors include his wife, Velma L. Sheffield Pleasant, of the home; two sons, Sidney E. Pleasant II, and John Pleasant and wife, Donna,, all of Cocoa, FL; one granddaughter, Sydney E. Pleasant, Cocoa, FL; and a special brother-in-law, Ken Sheffield and wife, Cathy, Morristown, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The committal and entombment service for Mr. Pleasant will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 9, 2013, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Gerald Holly, Minister, officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

SATELLITE BEACH, Fla. — Cmdr. William J. Blevins, age 89, of Satellite Beach, FL, died on June 7, 2011, at Holmes Regional Medical Center.

He was a native of Doeville, Tennessee. He was the son of the late Ira William Blevins and Nelia Pleasant Blevins.

He was preceded in death by his loving and faithful wife, Will Nell "Billie" Blevins, in 1995; four brothers, Dr. Sells Blevins, Dr. Justin Cline Blevins, Dr. Carson Blevins and Dr. Raymond Dean Blevins, all of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Cmdr. Blevins was a graduate of Johnson County High School, Mountain City, Tenn., and Georgia Tech University with a degree in Engineering.

He entered the US Navy and was a veteran of WWII, as well as the Korean and Vietnam wars. He worked for NASA while stationed at Patrick Air Force Base and served with honor and distinction at the Pentagon with the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He took a position in the US State Department with the Agency for International Development (USAID) and lived and worked in countries such as Kenya, Uganda and Brazil from 1967-1971.

He is survived by a daughter, Angela Yvonne Bretton, of Melbourne; a son, Dr. Michael William Blevins, of Satellite Beach; and a granddaughter, Melanie Weaver, of Hamdan, Connecticut. He is also survived by two sisters, Mary B. Murray, of Vero Beach, FL, and Wanda Vee B. Dugger and husband, Delmas, of Johnson City, Tennessee. Relatives include several nieces and nephews and a very special caretaker, Victoria "Princess Vicki" Kupec.

William was a member of Oceanside Community Church in Satellite Beach and read his Bible daily. He will forever be remembered as a kind and loving soul and will be truly missed by his family, friends and all who knew him.

There will be a visitation from 9-10 a.m. on Saturday, June 11, 2011, at Florida Memorial Funeral Home followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 10 a.m.

Entombment will follow at Florida Memorial Gardens.

Funeral services for Henry Edgar Lowe, 39, of Route 3, Mountain City, who died in the Appalachian Hospital Tuesday night, Valley Baptist Church Sunday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Shumake, the Rev. Ralph Snead and the Rev. George Westmoreland officiating. Burial will be in the Brookshire Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Harlow Crosswhite, Karl Sharp, N. W. Davis, Halton Robison, James Oliver and George Robinson.
The Body will be moved to the church at 12:30 p.m. Sunday to lie in state until the funeral hour.
Mr. Lowe is survived by his widow, Mrs. Florence Lowe; two sons, Jack and Junior Lowe, both of the home; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Lowe of route 3, Mountain City; four sisters, Mrs. Stella Davis and Mrs. George Robinson, both of Mountain City, and Mrs. Etoila Sharp and Mrs. Nora Oliver both of Elizabethton; and four brothers, Allen of Ohio, Phillip of Oak Ridge, Garfield of Mountain City, and Bill Lowe of Oregon.

Lavelle Hopson Gourley Fair, 90, of Blaine, Tenn., formerly of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, September 2, 2018, at RidgeView Terrace of Life Care, Rutledge, Tenn.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Walter E. and Elsie Pleasant Hopson.
Lavelle was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended Carson-Newman College. She was a homemaker.
Lavelle was a member and former organist at East River Park Christian Church. She attended Buffalo Springs Baptist Church in Blaine, Tenn.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Rev. Lewis Gourley, a Baptist minister, who passed away August 6, 1987; her second husband, Grady Fair, who passed away September 1, 2016; and a brother, Eugene Hopson.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Danny and Karen Gourley and Richard and Cathy Gourley, all of Rutledge, Tenn., six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services for Lavelle Hopson Gourley Fair will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 6, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. John H. Smith, minister, officiating. Interment will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Hansel & Patsy Pleasant. She was raised by her aunt, Miss Flossie Pleasant.

She was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Linda was a Licensed Practical Nurse for 40 years. She was employed at the Carter County Memorial Hospital, the nursing department of NARC and retired from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. She was of the Baptist Faith. Linda was a homemaker, she loved working in her flowers, yard work and crafts. She was preceded in death by her husband Billy Cole who passed away January 19, 2020 and by a brother: Master Sgt. US Air Force, James Ronnie Pleasant who passed away in December 2006.

Survivors include her children: Shelby Cole (Doug) Rasnick, Barbara (Scott) Curtis and Christy Simerly (Rick Barker). One Granddaughter; Hannah Simerly (Caleb) Marshall.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 22, 2021 in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery with Dr. Kenneth Jordan and her son-in-law, Doug Rasnick officiating. Burial will follow the service. Robert Michael (Mike) Pleasant, 69, of Telford, passed away October 12, 2022, at his home. Mike was born in Sullivan County and his family moved to Rockford, IL when he was about two years old. He returned to the Tri-Cities area in his early twenties. Mike was a member of the Army Reserves. He worked for Tri-City Towel & Linen before becoming a farmer in 1987, in Washington County. Mike was a caring person and always ready to help someone in need. He enjoyed working on antique cars, working on the farm, watching NASCAR races, and traveling, especially out west.

Mike was preceded in death by his parents, James Hancel and Edith Estep Pleasant; brother, Rick Pleasant; sister, Lesia Pleasant; aunt, Helen Carpenter; and special cousin, Teresa Carpenter.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Betty Pleasant; brothers-in-law Ralph Horne of Greeneville and Fred (Jane) Horne, of Kingsport; sisters-in-law Neta (Steve) Vance, Margie Larkins, both of Kingsport, Stacey Overbay, of Lake Junaluska, NC; cousins, Cindy Carpenter of Kingsport, Jeff & Robin Carpenter of Fall Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

JOHNSON CITY — William J. "Bill" Gentry, age 81, of Johnson City, passed away on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, at Cornerstone Village, Johnson City following a lengthy illness.

A native of Mountain City, TN, he was a son of the late Milton John and Chessie Severt Gentry. Mr. Gentry served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of a non-denominational Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Gentry was preceded in death by two sons, William Dean Gentry, Joseph C. Gentry; 2 sisters, Donna Kay Asbury and infant sister, Betty Gentry.

Survivors include his son, Jeff Gentry and wife Pam, Johnson City; two brothers, Bert Gentry, Milford, Delaware, Elmer Gentry, Houston, TX; sisters, Sue Manuel, Damascus, VA, Ruby Hanson, Blountville, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Gentry will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Friday, April 30, 2016, in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Mr. Jerome Frandle and Mr. Laren Spellman, ministers, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 11:00 until 12:00 noon in the East Parlor of the funeral home. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at Cornett Cemetery, Mountain City, following the funeral service at the funeral home. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Virgie Blanch Gentry, age 79, of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, surrounded by her family, went home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, August 14, 2019. Virgie was born in Laurel Bloomery, TN on January 20, 1940, to the late Russel Fredrick 'Fred' Gentry and Ruth Omega Cunningham Gentry. In addition to her parents, Virgie is preceded in death by 4 brothers Jackie, Andy, Lester, and Russell Gentry and 2 nephews, Bobby Gentry and Marcus Bishop.

Virgie worked at the UT Extension Office in Johnson County as an administrative assistant for 45 years before retiring. She was a faithful and active member of State Line Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery until her health would not allow. Virgie was an avid Tennessee Volunteer Football fan and enjoyed working in her flower gardens.

Those left to cherish Virgie's memory are her sisters, Della Campbell, Carolyn Bishop, and Margaret Spivey and husband Ted; nieces and nephews, Linda Carter, Brenda Isham, Sharon Winters, David Campbell, Sherry Stout, Darlene Bishop, Teresa Tester, Bonnie Nelson, Gary Gentry, Gregory Bishop, and Bridgett Dunn. Virgie is also survived by her very special friends, Tom Fortune, Paul Blevins, and June Williams.

Services for Virgie will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, August 18, 2019, at State Line Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery, with Michael Icenhour and Paul Graybeal officiating. Lois Myrtle Wilson, age 81, passed away on June 20, 2022, at her home. Lois was born March 18, 1941 to the late Walter and Ella Mae Roberts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, JC Wilson, four sisters, and five brothers.

Lois loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, and taking care of them was her greatest joy. She was a simple woman that loved her family and gardening.

It is with great sadness that the family of Norman Craig Pleasant announces his passing on Sunday, November 28, 2021 at his residence at the age of 62. Norman was born in Johnson County, Tennessee, on May 3, 1959. He was the son of the late Estel Pleasant and Loveta Shipley Pleasant. He was also proceeded in death by two brothers, Doug and Wendell Pleasant.
Norman was a carpenter, loved lawn work, being in the outdoors, and especially spending time with his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters; Priscilla Lowe (Matthew), Brittany Evans (Gary), three sisters; Mildred Eastridge (Joe), Sharon Merryman (Doug), and Jackie Thomas (Larry), a brother; Anthony Pleasant (Kathy), seven grandchildren; Brayden, Bryson, and Piper Lowe, Paislee, Violet, CoraLeigh, and Millie Evans, close friends; Angie Johnson and Cheryl Ann Lindsey, his one true love and the mother of his children; Tammy Cress Arnold. A graveside service for Norman will be held on Thursday, December 2, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at the Phillippi Cemetery with his Brother Anthony Pleasant to officiate. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Hux & Lipford Funeral Home and then go in procession for the graveside service.

Mildred Fay Robinson Fritts, 94, Elizabethton passed away Saturday, August 18, 2012 at her residence after a brief illness.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Emerald & Winnie Wilson Robinson. She had lived in Elizabethton for the past sixty five years. She was a homemaker. Mrs. Fritts was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler but attended East Side Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty seven years Jady Fritts, who died November 21, 2006, two Sons: Malcolm and Kenneth Fritts, four sisters and six brothers and her son-in-law: Bob Davenport.

Survivors include Two Daughters Helen Huffine and husband Harold, and Phyllis Davenport all of Elizabethton. Six Grandchildren: Teresa Smith & husband Allen, Richard Davenport and wife Beverly, Donna Royston and husband Danny, Brian Fritts, Kevin Fritts, and Michael Fritts and wife Heather. Edna Kyte, age 90 of Butler, TN, passed away on Friday morning, April 1, 2022 at her home. Edna was born on April 15, 1931 to the late Emerald and Winnie Robinson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Little Bud, Big Bud, J.D., Delmer, Ray, and Glenn; sisters, Shirley Norris, Fern Stalcup, Faye Fritts, Grace Pierce, Bonnie Rash and step-grandchild, Teresa.

Edna enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds, and collecting angel figurines. She also loved her animals dearly. Edna was a kind and loving person who will be missed by all who knew her.

ELIZABETHTON - Ruth Stout Grindstaff, 89, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, April 20, 2017 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home after a brief illness.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Wayne & Maude Robinson Stout. She had lived in Elizabethton for several years. Ruth was a graduate of Johnson County High School and attended East Tennessee State College. She retired from Burlington Industries, Mountain City. She was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church, Elizabethton and the Fidelis Sunday School Class. She was a former member of First Baptist Church, Mountain City, and was a former member and Choir Director of Little Doe Baptist Church, Butler. She was a member of Butler Chapter, Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded death by her husband: Ross H. Grindstaff who died September 30, 1993, and by a daughter: Sherry Grindstaff Mock, who passed away November 24, 2015.

Survivors include her daughter & son-in-law: Melody & David Crockett, Elizabethton. Four Grandchildren: Brad Proffitt, Jeremy Proffitt , Xandi Crockett , and Jessi Eller. A special granddaughter: Linda Scalf. Two Great Grandchildren: Dylan Proffitt and Kimberly Ann Proffitt. Her Brothers & Sisters-In-Law: Bill & Carolyn Grindstaff, Jack & Wilma Grindstaff and Barbara Grindstaff. Several special nieces , nephews and cousins.

ARNOLD, Delmer C., 74, went to be with his Lord at 12:47 a.m. on Sunday, April 30, 1995. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary A. Minopoli-Arnold of Naples, Italy; daughter and son-in-law, Ruth and Tom Roubal; son and daughter-in-law, Eddie W. and Dianne; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and John Delfrari; daughter and son-in-law, Dianna and Richard Rosler; 12 grandchildren and two grandchildren’s spouses; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by his sister, Berneice Matherly; brothers, Park, James and Elwood Arnold of Johnson County, TN; as well as a brother-in-law and family from Italy who live in Tucson. Born in Johnson County, TN, he served in North Africa and Italy with the 5th Army Medical Corps during World War II and was awarded two bronze stars. Living in Tucson for 48 years, he was employed as manager of Mulcahy Lumber Company and retired from Grant Road Lumber Company. He was awarded “Outstanding Salesman of the Year’in Tucson prior to retirement. Services will be at SOUTH LAWN MORTUARY CHAPEL, 5401 S. She was a member of the Elizabethton Community Handbell Choir for many years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the Elizabethton/Carter County Boys and Girls Club, the Elizabethton Kiwanis Club and the Christian Women's Club of Johnson City. She was an employee of Tri-State Container Corporation for fifteen years. She was the secretary at Central Elementary School for five years before becoming an administrative assistant at Tetrick Funeral Home from 1994 to her retirement in 2006, where she continued working part time until 2012.

JONESBOROUGH - Mrs. Jane Davis Loggins, age 81, Jonesborough, passed away Monday, December 2, 2019 at Hospice House in Bristol.

Mrs. Loggins was born in Johnson County and the daughter of the late N.U. & Stella Lowe Davis. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Loggins.

She was a member of Tri Cities Baptist Church and the Johnson City South Camp Gideons Ladies Auxiliary.

Mrs. Loggins, and her husband Hubert, were owners and operators of West Towne Hardware.

Survivors include one son, Mark Loggins; two sisters, Sara Wayland (Mike) and Barbara "Bobbie" Dancy; and several nephews and nieces.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Walter Atlee" Jack" Lowe, Sr., 91, of 947 Slabtown Road, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Wednesday November 21, 2018, at the Lakebridge Health Care Center of Johnson City, TN.

Jack was born on August 27, 1927, in Carter County, TN to the late Henry Edgar Lowe, Sr. and Florence Jordan Lowe. Jack was also predeceased in death by his wife Sommai Lowe and stepfather Lionel L.D. Lowe as well as his brother Henry E. Lowe, Jr.

Mr. Lowe was a true Southern gentleman who loved his country. He served 27 years combined in the TN Guard, US Navy, and US Air Force. He entered the Navy at the ripe age of 17, serving as a radar man during WWII and participated in the A-bomb testing at Bikini Atoll. He became a Shellback and member of the Order of the Neptune after crossing the equator on a ship. He continued his service during the Vietnam War as a Master Sargant in the US Air Force, earning a Bronze Star and serving in the National Emergency Airborne Command Post (NEACP) under the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

He loved gardening and collecting Oscar winning movies as well as supporting his football teams, the Washington Redskins and the Tennessee Volunteers. Jack was a Graduate of Johnson County High School.

Those left to cherish his memory are his two daughters; Cat-Thee Dingus and husband Chris, Kingsport, TN and Deborah Sword and husband Ronnie, Oviedo, FL; a son, Walter 'Dub' Lowe and wife Louise, Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Catelin Dingus, Katherine Sword, and Ron Sword; his former spouse and friend Mary Lou Hajducsek.

Harry Houston “Bud” White of Lawrenceville, Ga., passed away on April 26, 2021 in Buford, Ga. Harry was a native of Carter County. His parents were Dan and Ollie White of Stoney Creek.
Harry graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1948, and entered the U.S. Air Force where he served as a flight radio operator during the Korean War. Upon returning home, he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and became a telecommunications engineer. He married Jean (Barnes) White, also of Elizabethton, and spent most of the remainder of his life in the Atlanta area. After retiring from the telecommunications industry, Harry joined Admissions and Guest Services at Dollywood Theme Park (Pigeon Forge, Tenn.), where he worked for an additional 18 years before “retiring” again.
Harry was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, where he became a 32nd-degree Mason. He served as a Deacon at Mount Carmel Christian Church, Stone Mountain, Ga., for a number of years. He loved reading about the Old West, and made several trips to his favorite place: Yellowstone National Park.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and is survived by his two children, Dr. Richard E. White and Sandra J. White, both of Dacula, Ga.; two grandchildren, Gina M. White, Augusta, Ga., and Daniel R. White, Dacula, Ga.; and a sister, Hazel Truman Hester, Lake Mary, Fla.

Emma Peters Hurley, 83, of Elizabethton, passed away on Thursday, August 9, 2012 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Vennia Colbaugh Peters and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death, by her husband, Glen "Buck" Hurley; son, John R. Hurley; and 14 brothers and sisters.

Mrs. Hurley was a member of New Liberty Freewill Baptist Church. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren and working word puzzles.

She is survived by her daughter, Neta Schneibolk of Sandy Spring, MD; two sons, Ronnie Hurley and Greg Hurley and his wife Brenda all of Elizabethton; 9 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a special niece, Becky Peters Lay; sister, Reba Vines and her husband Jerry of Elizabethton; and a special friend and "sister", Addie Blevins of Elizabethton. Harold Edwin "Bear Claw" Phillippi, age 70, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home in Doe Valley surrounded by family on Friday, October 12, 2018. Harold was born in Mountain City on June 29, 1948 to the late Edwin "Tuck" Phillippi and Mary Virginia Mullins Phillippi. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Bob Phillippi and paternal and maternal grandparents. Harold was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday School Class.

Harold was an avid hunter and spent many days and nights in the mountains hunting bear, raccoon, rabbits and deer. He was fond of his bear dogs and enjoyed the hunt as much as taking the animal. He was always willing to take the younger, inexperienced hunter and help them to experience his love of the mountains and hunting. Harold held the Tennessee State record when he checked in a black bear weighting 635 lbs

Harold is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Phillippi; two daughters, Lisa and her special friend Donnie and Jaycee Clawson; his mother, Virginia Phillippi; brother, Roby Phillippi and wife Carol; two grandsons, Ethan and Josh Clawson. Sister-in-laws Virginia Manuel & husband Don, June Thomas & Friend Coleman, Ann Skewes & husband Mike, Harold had a special sister-in-law, Mae Matheson, who he entrusted to always be there to help him, Brother-in-law, Doran Swift & Wife Emogene.

He will be remembered by his many friends along with the members of the Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Stoney Creek Hunting Club, as well as many other hunting organizations.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October15, 2018 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7 p.m. with Pastors Gale Hartley, Spencer Roark and Dean Smith officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Pallbearers will be Josh Clawson, Jamie Phillippi, Jeremy Phillippi, Jeff Phillippi, Doug Thomas, Mike Roark, Jerry Roark, Bob Mullins and Blake Phillippi. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Bethany Baptist Church, members of Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Mike Skewes, Dick Johnson, Jason Bryan, Ralph Matheson, Don Manuel, Doran Swift and Jerry Paul Stanberry. The graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Brookshire Cemetery.

Mary Alice Stalcup Buck, 77, Johnson City passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014, in the Johnson City Medical Center with her loving family by her side.
A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late William Leslie and Eula Fern Robinson Stalcup. She had lived in Johnson City since 1964.
She was retired from H.I.S., Johnson City. Mary was a member of the Boone Trail Baptist Church and the Joy Sunday School Class. She loved to work in her flowers.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar L. Buck, who died March 21, 1999.
Survivors include her son: William N. Buck and his wife, Sherri, Johnson City; Five Grandchildren: Zachary Buck, Jeffrey, Jason, Deranda and Courtney Fair; Four Great Grandchildren; Two Brothers: Brig. Gen. (Ret.) Billy J. Stalcup and wife, Nicole, Alexandria, Virginia, and John Paul Stalcup and wife, Betty, Johnson City; One Aunt: Edna Kyte, Butler; One Uncle: Charles Norris, Butler; Several nieces, nephews & cousins.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dwight Jenkins, Rev. Terry Jones and Rev. Bill Greer officiating.
Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 29, 2014, in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Music will be provided by the Ladies Trio of Keystone Free Will Baptist Church and Cathy Fagan. Active Pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Wednesday, will be: Don Dweyer, Wayne Bledsoe, Will Easler, John Stalcup Jr., Stacey Stalcup and Todd Weise. Honorary Pallbearers will be her church family and the Joy Sunday School Class.

ELIZABETHTON - Phyllis Davenport, age 75, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, March 8, 2018 at her residence.

Phyllis was born in Butler, Tennessee to the late Jady and Faye Robinson Fritts. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, Bobby Joe Davenport; two brothers, Malcolm Fritts and Kenneth Fritts; and a daughter, Kathy Davenport.

Phyllis was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother, who will be missed tremendously by all who knew her. She was a member of Willow Springs Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Richard Davenport, of Elizabethton; her daughter, Donna Royston and husband Danny, of Lake Wylie, SC; three grandchildren, Devin Trivette, Kayla Davenport and Bobby Davenport; her sister, Helen Huffine, of Elizabethton; and her special friend, Lee Hamm, of Elizabethton.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Phyllis Davenport will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Saturday, March 10, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. James Henson and Rev. Dean Smith, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Saturday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:30 PM on Sunday, March 11, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Allen Smith, Bobby Davenport, Austin Jaynes, Jimmy Bowling, John Pansock and Gordon Nidiffer.

Tommy Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, was dead on arrival at Johnson County Memorial Hospital after a logging accident Monday morning.

A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. Several aunts and uncles also survive.

Funeral services for Tommy Lewis Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, who died Monday morning, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday from the Little Doe Baptist Church, with the Rev. R. A. Royston and Mark Sparks, minister, officiating. Interment will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. The Sugar Grove Quartet will be in charge of music.

Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, will be Carroll Matherly, Jerry Matherly, Jerry Garland, Larry Garland, Bob Atwood and Carroll Fletcher.
