Lee Rash 'Mamaw' Crowder, age 96, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, December 13, 2018 at the Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on September 29, 1922 to the late James William Rash and Mala Augusta Gentry Rash. In addition to her parents, Lee was preceded in death by her husband Ralph Crowder; son-in-law, Morris Bury; sisters; Ruby Leffman and Gladys Harmon; brothers, Conley, James and Oscar Rash.

Lee was an active member of First Baptist Church and a former elder at Weaver Union Church. She was a devoted Christian and was always serving her church and community. While her health permitted she served on the Bereavement Committee and other various committees at church. She was a 50 year member of the Eastern Star and former treasurer of Johnson County Democratic Party.

Lee attended classes at ETSU and Appalachian State University. She taught for many years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association.

She had several hobbies which included reading, gardening and cooking for her family. She especially liked to raise gourds in her garden. Lee tried playing golf at the age of 62 and fell in love. She continued playing golf until the young age of 92. She was a member of the Redtail and Deerfield Golf Courses.

Those close to Lee knew her simply as 'Mamaw'.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughters, Dee Bury and Kaye Muse and husband John; grandchildren; Amanda Chatterton and husband Michael, Eden Buchanan, Marilee Larson and husband Nathan and Hallie Mahala and husband Cliff; great grandchildren, Benjamin Chatterton, Hannah Chatterton, John Gavin Mahala, Kaylee Mahala, Noah Larson, Elliott Larson, and Henry Larson; sisters-in-law, Edith Cornett and Gladys Campbell; daughters of the heart, Cathy Muse and Debbie Ray; sister of the heart, Minnie Miller; special friends, Mary Greene and Hazel Crowder, several nieces and nephews and many special friends and neighbors.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. Sunday, December 16, 2018 at the First Baptist Church. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell officiating. Special music will be provided by Christina Lewis and Ricky Campbell. Graveside service and interment will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, VA. Wiley Burl Simcox, age 94, of Mountain City, passed away Friday, February 15, 2008 in Watauga Medical Center.
He was born on May 20, 1913 in Shouns, Tennessee, the son of the late Stacy and Villa Rash Simcox. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mabel Payne Simcox and sisters, Hettie Nichols, Nannie Dowell, and Gladys Proffitt. He had many occupations in his lifetime. He worked in the coal mines of West Virginia and at a shipyard in Maryland during the onset of WWII. Back in Johnson County he owned and operated his own sawmill. For several years he worked for the Johnson County Highway Department in bridge construction. The first cement bridges in the county were built under his supervision. He was also a farmer and cattleman, but raising cattle was his favorite area of farming. He was an avid horseman and always kept horses on the farm. He was instrumental in organizing the horse show for the Bean Festival during the 1950's. He was a faithful member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church where he led singing for many years.
Survivors include his daughter, of Mountain City; his son, of Mountain City; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 12:00 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday, February 17, 2008 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 2:30 p.m. with Mike Smith, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Dunn Cemetery.

He was born to the late Winston Ferry Vanover and Della Payne Vanover in Mountain City, Tenn. He is also preceded in death by two sisters, Bonnie Lewis and Elizabeth Vanover. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Margaret Grace Humphrey Vanover; two sons, James R. Vanover of the home and David Joe Glen Vanover and wife, Sharon, of Atkins, Va.; two daughters, Patricia Diane Goad and husband, Edward, of Bristol, Va., and Sherrie Vanover of the home; three brothers, Ralph Vanover and wife, Brenda, of Shady Valley, Tenn., R.B. RB Vanover, age 76, passed away on March 31, 2022 at his home. RB was born on November 29, 1945 to the late Winston and Della Vanover. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Richard Eugene Vanover; sisters, Bonnie Lewis, Elizabeth Vanover, and brother, Jay Vanover.

RB was a great Christian man who loved the Lord and serving God. He often prayed for people and was there when anyone needed him. He had a great sense of humor and overall loved being around people. He always liked cutting wood and being outdoors. RB was a great husband and father and loved his family. He cherished all his times with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of Heath Union Church and attended Oasis Christian Center.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 53 years, Joan Vanover; daughter, Melissa Trivette (Robert); sons, Michael Vanover, Joseph Vanover (Amber); sisters, Ruby Oliver, Ruth Boer, Loraine, Ferry Roark, Veidie Pope, Lois Cox; brothers, Ralph Vanover, Robert Vanover; grandchildren, Tiffany Trivette, Brittany Dunn, Brooke Hostetler, Brandon Vanover; Dylan Vanover; great grandchildren, Destiny Trivette, Emmie Hostetler; Kenzie Dunn; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and Zoey, his dog and constant companion.

Ambrose Loyd Vanover, age 66, of Wamego, Kansas and formerly of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, January 17, 2013 at his residence. He was born in Mountain City, TN on July 2, 1946 to the late David Vanover and Ellaree Vanover.
Ambrose was a mechanic and had worked as a house mover. He was a humble, loving and wonderful man who loved his family and will truly be missed.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Marie Goudy Vanover; daughter, Donna Miller of KS; sons: Michael Vanover and wife Theresa of Blountville, TN and David Vanover of KS; sisters: Carolyn Davis and husband Howard of Creston, NC and Debbie Vanover of Mountain City; brothers: Victor Vanover of KS, Dayton Vanover and wife Carolyn of Mountain City, TN Kenneth Vanover and wife Teresa of Elizabethton, TN, Johnny Vanover of Johnson City, Orville Vanover, James Vanover, both of Mountain City and David Vanover and wife Susan of KS; grandchildren: Michael Vanover, Tyler Hodge, Nicole Vanover, Madison Vanover, Amber Miller, Carrie Vanover, Trent Williams, Hope Vanover, and Courtney Medley and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

Dayton Glenn Vanover, age 69, of Mountain City, TN; passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born April 15, 1950 in Johnson County, TN to the late David Vanover and Elaree Vanover. In addition to his parents Dayton was preceded in death by his son Scott Vanover, brothers Lloyd Vanover, Earl Vanover, Arvil Vanover, and Kenneth Vanover.

Dayton never met a stranger and was always smiling and willing to help anyone. He was always smiling and had a quick joke to make people laugh. Most of all he loved his family.

He attended Mountain City Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 48 years Carol Jean Vanover, Daughters Angie Cummings and husband David, and Missy Cornett. Sisters, Karen Davis and husband Howard, and Debbie Vanover. Brothers, Johnny Vanover, J.C. Vanover, D.L. Vanover and wife Susan. ELIZABETHTON - Richard "Kenneth" Vanover, Sr., age 63, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Friday, January 26, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness.

A native of Mountain City, he was a son of the late Matthew and Elleree Vanover.

Mr. Vanover was a former employee of Gardner Paint Service, Johnson City. He was known as a jack of all trades, and was always willing to help anyone who asked.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Vanover was preceded in death by three brothers, Lloyd, Earl and Arvil Vanover.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Teresa Kay Roark Vanover, Elizabethton; two daughters, Vanessa Vanover and Mike Stark, Hampton, Catherine Vanover and Mitch Cole, Elizabethton; one son, Richard Vanover, Jr. and Christy Vanover, Central Community; six grandchildren, Willie Stevens, Franny and Eric Knox, Gabby Vanover, Zoey Cole, and Austin Vanover; one great grandchild, Brooke Knox; four brothers, Dayton Vanover and wife Carol, Johnny Vanover, J.C Vanover, all of Mountain City, D.L Vanover, Kansas; two sisters, Karolen Davis and husband Howard, North Carolina, Debbie Vanover, Mountain City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

JONESBOROUGH - Tyrone Wayne Vanover, Jonesborough, went home to be with Jesus, Monday, August 12, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

Wayne was born September 7, 1942 in Johnson City to the late William Joseph Vanover and Pansy McFall Vanover. He was a loving, forgiving person who never met a stranger, a wonderful father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle and friend. Wayne worked at C&T Volkswagon Subaru for many years. He loved playing and singing bluegrass gospel music and fishing. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Wanda Sue Vest Vanover; brothers, Raymond, James and Lloyd Vanover; sisters, Mary Holmes and Phyllis Nelson; and his beloved dog, Puddles.

He is survived by his daughter, Sheila Houk of Jonesborough; granddaughter, Megan Franklin (Aaron); great-granddaughter, Zelda Franklin; sisters, Betty Roberson, Judy Taylor and Viola Barnett (Gary); several nieces and nephews and many friends.

The family would like to thank Dr. Merrick and his nurses for their care and compassion, Maggie at Lincare, who supplied the equipment that kept him as comfortable as possible, and all the nurses and PT's who kept him motivated and moving, Ken Vest who always came to help when called, no matter how unpleasant the task, Kelvin and Becky Lester who always made Dad feel welcome and loved and did whatever they could to help, and to the many people who faithfully prayed for him. JONESBOROUGH - Gary “Cowboy” Vanover, 65, Jonesborough, died Wednesday, November 24, 2021, at his residence, following a lengthy illness.
Gary was a Johnson City native and a lifelong Washington County resident. He was a son of the late James Franklin and Marion Louise Bowman Vanover.
Gary was a former heavy equipment operator, working primarily with backhoes.
He was a member of King Springs Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Sherry Barnett Vanover, in 2020, two brothers, his twin, Larry Vanover, and Freddy Vanover, two sisters, Kathy Garland and Tammy Rhea.
He is survived by two daughters, Shannon Lane and husband Tommy, Melissa Vanover, all of Jonesborough; four grandchildren, Tommy Lane, Jr., Danielle Lane, Cody Vanover, and Bailey Davis, all of Jonesborough; four great-grandchildren, Noah, Sophia, Ivie and Lily; two brothers, Danny Vanover and wife Kathy, Elizabethton, Chris Vanover and wife Michelle, Jonesborough; one sister, Lisa Greene, Mars Hill, NC; several nieces and nephews.
It was Gary’s wishes to be cremated. There will be a private family service at a later date.
