JOHNSON CITY - Carsie Hyder Lodter, age 100, of Johnson City, passed away Friday evening, January 19, 2018 at Grace Healthcare, Abingdon, Virginia.

She was born at Milligan College, Tennessee June 21, 1917, and grew up in the Hyder family home on property that adjoined the campus.

Milligan College played a major part in Mrs. Lodter's early life. Her parents, the late Sam Jack Hyder and Mary Thomas Hyder, had met there as students; her father taught in the mathematics department for over fifty years; and three of her siblings were graduates. Milligan is also where she met her husband, the late Edward Colin Gustave Lodter, a professor in the foreign language department. She graduated from Milligan summa cum laude, and was named the most outstanding student in the senior class.

After her college graduation, Mrs. Lodter taught home economics at Elizabethton High School for seven years, and also taught for one year at Milligan. She later received her master's degree from East Tennessee State University (ETSU), and was an assistant professor there for twenty-three years, teaching nutrition and clothing & textiles. During that time, she served as a faculty advisor of Sigma Kappa Sorority and of Kappa Omicron Phi, an honors society. Mrs. Lodter also took postgraduate courses at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. She became a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi, an honors society, and was an officer of the ETSU Women's Faculty Club, and of the ETSU Retired Teachers Association.

Mrs. Lodter was a dedicated and active member of First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where her husband served as organist for over fifty years. She held several positions at the church, including lay leader, and she was president of the United Methodist Women.

Love for her immediate and extended family was of primary importance, and time spent together was cherished by all. She also made and retained close friends throughout all phases of her life. In addition to having an exceptional professional career, Mrs. Lodter was an unequaled homemaker. She enjoyed her bountiful rose garden, and was noted for its award-winning blooms and for the potpourri she made from their petals. She was also a remarkable seamstress, and made clothes for herself and for family members.

In addition to her parents and her husband, five siblings preceded Mrs. Lodter in death: Oris Doyle Hyder, Aline Hyder Hardwick, Jean Thomas Hyder, Nelta Hyder Warnock, and an unnamed brother who died in infancy.

Mrs. Lodter is survived by a daughter, Schéry Collins and her husband David Collins of Abingdon, Virginia, and by a son, Daniel Edward Lodter, of Hagerstown, Maryland. She leaves eight grandchildren: Helen Lambert of Bristol, Tennessee, Sahra Wilkins of Tega Cay, South Carolina, Blaine Young of Charlotte, North Carolina, Emilie Blanquie of Charlotte, North Carolina, Scott Collins of Roanoke, Virginia, Colin Lodter of Alexandria, Virginia, Brayden Lodter of Arlington, Virginia and Thomas Finley of Arlington, Virginia. Eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive her.

Following a private burial, a service to celebrate the life of Carsie Hyder Lodter will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 27, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Raymond Amos, Sr. officiating, assisted by Fr. Boyd Evans, St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Abingdon, Virginia. Music will be under the direction of Schéry Lodter Collins, with the participation of David Collins, Lauren and Hannah Hoffman, Rebecca Paluzzi, the church's Chancel Choir (Tyler Fleming, director; David Arney, organist), and choir members from St. Thomas Episcopal Church. After the service, the family will greet friends in the fellowship hall.

R. Howard Bowers, age 88, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 12, 2015 from Ivy Hall Nursing Home.
Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and was the son of the late Oscar Clyde Bowers and Willie Hyder Whittemore.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Colbaugh Bowers in 1970; a sister, Billie Shell; and a niece, Cynthia Frazier Freeman.
Mr. Bowers retired from the Baker Hughes Company, General Electric and Sandvick Tool Company, as a supervisor. He was a member of Borderview Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and was a former treasurer. He enjoyed golf, traveling and listening to gospel and country music.
Mr. Bowers was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II.
Survivors include two sisters, Ruth Ann Cullop and Patty Swift and husband Kenneth, all of Elizabethton; and five nephews, Robert Frazier, Hampton, and Jim Frazier, Terry Frazier, Richard Shell, and Steve Shell, all of Elizabethton.
A graveside service to honor the life of Mr. R. Howard Bowers will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Scott Fisher, minister, officiating.

AFTON - On Sunday, May 5, 2019, Patsy (Pat) Hyder Lee, a resident of Afton, Tennessee for over 30 years, passed away at the age of 86.

Pat was born on December 7, 1932 in Johnson City, Tennessee, the only child of Lynn "Skinny" Hyder and Lucille Shipley Hyder. She and her husband Everett W. Lee met at the ages of 12 and 14 and later graduated together from University High. After graduation, she completed one year of nurses training in Nashville before returning home to marry. Pat and Everett would raise their five children in Johnson City.

In the 1960's, Pat's love of nursing led her to volunteer as one of the "Gray Ladies" at Mountain Home VA (or Soldier's Home), which is now a part of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. Once her children were grown, she was employed by Greene Valley Developmental Center in Greeneville, TN. After working there a few years, Pat and Everett moved to Afton and built a home.

Antiques started as a hobby for Pat and Everett but became a second career and later full time job when both retired. In 1989 they opened American Road Antiques located in Afton. It will close this year with an auction scheduled for the end of this month.

Pat was self taught and extremely knowledgeable in all types and generations of antiques. She traveled widely to find the very best pieces for her shop and would proudly state that she never purchased reproductions. She was well known and very active in the antique business and its' various specialty organizations. For a number of years she was the President of the East Tennessee Antique Dealers Association.

While in Johnson City, Pat was an active and supportive member of St. Mary's Catholic Church where her children also attended St. Mary's School. She participated in numerous lay ministries of the church and fund raising efforts at the school. In Greeneville, she was an active member of Notre Dame Catholic Church. Her faith in God was a legacy she passed down to her children.

Pat was known for being outgoing. She welcomed all strangers and was generous in giving to as well as helping others. She sponsored many charities and organizations throughout her life. Also known for her quick wit and dramatic flare, she was outspoken on many topics and she would "tell it like it is". Her humor was a huge part of her personality and a trait she passed on to her children. We are all better for the fun she brought into our lives.

In addition to her parents and her husband; she is preceded in death by her eldest daughter, Jenny Lynn Lee Hines.

She is survived by her children Judy Shelton (Rick), Cindy Adorante (Joe), Larry Lee (Anna) and Laura Mott (Steve). She was a loving "Granny" to ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The Lee family will receive friends on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Doughty-Stevens Funeral Home with a service to follow at 7:00 P.M. in the chapel, officiated by Father Dan Whitman. Doughty-Stevens is located at 1125 Tusculum Blvd, Greeneville, Tennessee 37745.

A graveside service will be held at Monte Vista Memorial Park in Johnson City, Tennessee on Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 10:00 A.M. located at 1900 E. Oakland Ave. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery. Pat will be laid to rest beside her loving husband of 56 years.

Pallbearers will be Joe Adorante, Rick Shelton, Steve Mott, Tyler Adorante, Chris Williams, Luke Shelton, Daniel Hreha, and Daniel Lee.

WATAUGA - Meredith Randal "Randy" Hyder, 61, Watauga passed away Saturday, February 9, 2019 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was born September 9, 1957 in Elizabethton. Randy was a 1975 graduate of Happy Valley High School. He was employed as a Millwright. He was a member of Sl agle's United Methodist Church. Randy loved working with wood, was a NASCAR Fan and an avid UT Vol Fan. He was preceded in death by his father: Worley Hyder in 1998 and his father-in-law: Kyle Hyder.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years: Diane Hyder. His Mother: Jane Morton Hyder, Elizabethton, his brother: Calvin Hyder & friend Robyn, Johnson City, a sister: Lawana (Tony) Slagle, Elizabethton. Five Nieces: His Uncle & Aunt: Jack & Kathy Morton a special cousin: Dennis & Kay Geisler. His Mother-In-Law: Eddie Hyder and his Brother-In-Law: Jeff Hyder and fiancé Misty. Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Rev. Lou Crandall and Rev. Mike Berry officiating. The Eulogy will be given by Joey Campbell. JOHNSON CITY - Larry Gale "Butch" Hyder, 77, of Johnson City passed peacefully at home, surrounded by his family on December 24, 2019.

He was born on June 26, 1942, son of the late Fred Hyder, Jr. and Blanche Love Phillips Cecil. In addition to his parents, his beloved grandparents, Fred and Ethel Taylor Hyder preceded him in death.

Butch was a 1960 graduate of Happy Valley High School.

He retired from Raytheon and Alemite.

Butch was a member of the Watauga Lodge #622 F&AM.

He was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

Butch enjoyed motorcycles, model airplanes, spending time with his family and fishing with his wife Mitzi.

Those left to cherish his many wonderful memories include his wife of 59 years, Mitzi White Hyder; two daughters, Felisa Townsend (Jeff) and Kim Williams; one son Larry Joe Hyder; six grandchildren, Kari Masters (Andrew), Brandon Townsend (April), Jared Williams (Kaitlin Hensley), Elijah Hyder, Hannah Hyder and Ethan Hyder; three great-grandchildren, Colton Masters, Emma Townsend and Westley Williams; his three sisters, Freddie Williams (Tom), Patty Grove (Wayne) and Judy Miller; one brother, Greg Hyder (Marsha) and also several nieces and nephews and his special cat "Callie Mae".

The family will receive friends on Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm in the Dogwood Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home. ELIZABETHTON - Mr. Richard A. Shell, age 66, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

He was a son of the late Frederick "Bud" and Billie Bowers Shell and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Worthington Shell and a brother, Joseph Shell.

Richard was a former X-ray Technician and a former Physical Therapist. He enjoyed reading and was of the Catholic faith.

Those left to cherish his memory include a brother, Steve Shell of the home; a niece, Jamie Shell of Knoxville, TN; two aunts, Ruth Ann Cullop and Patty Swift and husband, Ken, all of Elizabethton; and three cousins.

ELIZABETHTON - Kay M. Edens, 76, of Elizabethton, TN passed away on July 12 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

Mrs. Edens was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Elbert and Blanche Hyder Meredith and Lucille Meredith who graciously stepped in to help raise Kay after her mother died. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Harold D. Edens and a brother and sister-in-law Willie G. and Patsy Meredith.

Mrs. Edens is survived by a son, Mark Edens (Anna), a daughter, Beth Tester (Larry), and the greatest joy of her life- her granddaughter, Eden Tester. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law: Jean White and Nancy Alsup, a special niece, Carolyn Dawson, and a special nephew who called weekly, John Meredith. She also leaves behind special friends Gilda Reed, Judy Scalf, Pam Slayton, and Georgia Jaynes.

Mrs. Edens was a lifelong member of Oak Grove Christian Church and the Maggie Kyte Ladies’ Circle.

Kay was a 1964 graduate of Happy Valley High School and a 1966 graduate of Steed College. She retired from the VA Medical Center as a Medical Record Technician.

Kay was also a homemaker who enjoyed traveling, camping, cooking, shopping, canning, and freezing. She also enjoyed college football and basketball; especially the TN Vols teams. She also enjoyed being outdoors, nature, and the beauty of God’s creation.

The family wishes to extend special thanks to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing Home for their loving care and also to the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Jeff Curtis Minister and chaplain Chris Hughes officiating. Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Greeted in Heaven by family and friends, William Bruce Thompson, Jr., age 78, 254 Thompson Lane, Jonesborough, entered into the arms of Jesus on August 28th, 2021 in Limestone at the home of the daughter he always wanted. Born on June 6th, 1943 in Johnson City, he was a lifelong native of Jonesborough and the son of Bruce and Josephine Yeiser Thompson. He attended Milligan College where he graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in 1965. Bruce enjoyed racing in his younger years with his friend, Larry, traveling all over the circuit to compete. After his employment with the City of Johnson City in their payroll department, Bruce farmed at the family home until his health forced his retirement. In 2003, he got Washington County Cattle Producers Senior Producer of the Year. Bruce enjoyed his gunsmithing hobby, building and repairing guns, as well as target shooting for fun. After his retirement he loved to sit and tell stories of his farming and racing days, passing on his wealth of knowledge on both. He never missed a softball game where Michelle or Bria and Paula were playing, cheering his girls on from the sidelines. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Charles J. Thompson, sister Lena Jo Gardner, best friend Eugene Merrill, and his beloved fur friend Maverick who truly was his companion.

But when someone is chosen to come together to be a family, that is a Christ like love, stronger than blood. “A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.”

Left to cherish his memory is the daughter he always wanted, Michelle Malone and husband Ramey, grandchildren Bria, Paula, Weylyn Malone and his extra special granddaughter Magdalena Malone who was the absolute sparkle of his eye. Special cousin Lake Thompson and wife Connie, whom he loved like a brother and cherished the time spent with him. Special brother in law, Jack Gardner and his children Carol Grace, Mary Jo, Sally Ann, and Andy. Special Friends Gary Jones, Don Moore, Mark Treadway, and Isabel Limoges. A funeral service officiated by Ministers Tim Stamper and Karl Gasser will be held on Tuesday, August 31,2021 at 7:00 pm in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until the time of the service. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 1, 2021 at Highland Cemetery in Elizabethton at 11:00 am. Those who wish to attend the graveside service will meet at the cemetery by 10:50 am on Wednesday. Serving as pallbearers will be Lake Thompson, Ramey Malone, Weylyn Malone, Mark Treadway, Jeff Stuart, and Ray Stuart. Honorary Pallbearers are Don Moore, Gary Jones and Larry Cavin.
