Cripple Held For Slaying Johnson Man - Claims Neighbor Invaded Home And Threatened Death.
Mountain City, Feb. 14 - Sheriff J. T. Greever stated this morning that Clarence Potter, 55, crippled, was being held in jail this morning on charge of murdering Stacy Roark, 50, his neighbor at the Potter home in the third district.
Although details of the shooting were not known, Potter claimed that he shot in self-defense when Roark and two other men broke down the door to his home as he lay asleep and threatened to shoot him. Roark was shot with a 12-guage shot gun, the charge entering his left side.
Roark lived about an hour after being shot but died before the doctor arrived, it was reported. Two men with Roark made their escape and are not known, it was said.
Potter said he could no reason for Roark's action. It was not known whether Roark was really armed or not. Trial for Potter has been set before Magistrate T. A. Wills for next Saturday.

...79, RFD Shouns, died at his home Thursday at 6:00 p.m. after a short illness. Mr. Roark was a native of Johnson County, a farmer and member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Naomi Roark, Shouns; five sons, Bert, Hepner, Ore., Ray, Parkdale, Ore., Howard, Parkdale, Ore., Edward, Shouns, and Wayne of Mountain City; two daughters, Mrs. May Osborne and Mrs. Faye Brown, both of Parkdale, Oregon; a brother, John Roark, Shouns; a sister, Mrs. Janie Potter, Damascus, Va.; 22 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted from the Antioch Baptist Church Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. with the Rev. Blaine Eggers and Rev. Ernest Rash officiating. Burial was in the Arnold Cemetery.

Bert French Roark died Feb 14 at his home. He lived with his son Bert and daughter-in-law Barbara Roark at Princeton(OR). Viewing will be Friday morning at LaFollette's Chapel in Burns with graveside service at 2pm at Crane Cemetery.
Born March 10,1910, in Mountain City,TN, to Samuel and Naomi Roark, he worked on the family farm until he came to Central Oregon in the 1930's to work herding sheep. He trapped for the government in Harney county and Central Oregon in the 1930's and 1940's. He started logging in the 1950's and continued in this occupation until he retired.
Trapping for fur, hunting and fishing were special interests all his life.
He is survived by his wife Leah of Pendleton; sons Sam of Parkdale, Lester Roark of Pendleton, John Roark of Pendleton, Russell Roark of Baker City, Bert Roark of Princeton, Clayton Roark and Jason Roark of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters Oma Ricker of Haines and Luella Roark; brothers Ed Roark and Wayne Roark of Mountain City,TN, Ray Roark of Parkdale; sisters Fay Die of Yuma,AZ and Mae Osborne of Parkdale.
He is survived by 21 grandchildren including Lance,Aaron, Isabella, Victoria,Roman and Casandra Roark of Princeton, Donny Roark of Portland, Steven Roark of Seattle,WA, Angela Roark of Hood River and Amy Roark of China, Elizabeth Loenning of La Grande, Cecily Longhorn of Stanfield, and Paul Martin Jr and Amos Martin of Beaverton, Justin Roark of Yachats, Crystal Roark of Spokane, Shawneen Sword of Baker City, Roark Broadie of Haines, Jessica and Samantha Roark of Tacoma,WA,Alexander Roark of Johnson City,TN; six great grand children and 26 nieces and nephews.

DAVID ARNOLD
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Hill Chapel for little six-year-old David Arnold of Route 1, Mountain City, who died at General Hospital after being admitted on November 14 with a definite diagnosis of polio.
The little boy was rushed from Johnson City, led by special highway patrol all the way to Knoxville by the Johnson City Emergency and Life Saving Squad. He died a short time after admission.
Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Arnold; two sisters, Sophia Elizabethton and Viola Gray; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Arnold; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Turnmire.

Mary Nell Fritts, 66, of Mountain City, Tenn.,, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 17, 1951 to the late Spencer Carl Arnold and Gay Viola Turnmire Arnold. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Gray Taylor, and a brother, David Arnold.
Mary was kind-hearted, loving and caring to everyone around her. She loved everyone and through her love and kindness, made many, many special friends. Many people knew Mary from her work at the Dollar General Store, where she met each customer with a warm smile. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary enjoyed traveling and visiting places. She especially loved going to the beach and yard sales. She loved living in the mountains and really enjoyed the winter snow, Christmas time and Santa Claus. She was a member of Beta Theta.
Mary was a member of Dyson Grove Baptist Church. She loved her church, church family and enjoyed hearing the church choir sing.
Those left to cherish her memories include her loving husband of 48 years, Earl M. Fritts; daughters, Sherry Fritts, Melissa Fritts and Tammy Laws and husband Daniel Laws; sister, Sophia Rich; grandchildren, Elizabeth Fritts and Andrea Couch; great-grandchildren, Kyle Gattis, Connor Gattis and Arabella Couch; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 12, at Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel. The funeral service will follow with Pastor Leonard Fletcher and Associate Pastor Cameron Dula officiating. Special music will be provided by the Dyson Grove Baptist Church Choir. Graveside services and interment will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 13, at the Phillippi Cemetery. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Margie Lewis Greer, age 76, of 644 Roan Creek Road, passed away January 29, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born January 14, 1942 in Johnson County, TN.

Margie was the daughter of the late Denver & Leller Roark Lewis. In addition, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Brown, and two brothers; Thurman Lewis & Donnelly Lewis.

She loved spending time with her Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening & working in her flowers. She was a homemaker and formerly worked at Levis and Leco.

Margie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Greer. Her children; Cledith Greer of the home, Teresa & husband Mike Parlier of Deep Gap, Sandy Billings & husband Tim of Butler, John Greer & wife Denise also of Butler. Sister; Josephine Wallace of Mountain City, and a Brother, Vonnelly Lewis & wife Ann of Mountain City.

Grandchildren; Michael Parlier, Chelsey Norwood, Amanda Mullins & husband Chris, Ashlee Cornett & husband Jeremy, Aylsa Hodge & husband Ernie, Amber Bumgardner & husband Timmy, Brandon Greer & Bradley Greer.

Great Grandchildren; Lexi & Allie Mullins, Brylee & Blaine Cornett, Ava & Emma Hodge, Sam & Seth Bumgardner.

Several nieces & nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be conducted Wednesday, January 31, 2018 in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux & Lipford Funeral Home with, Pastor Teddy Lewis officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 P.M. prior to the service. Funeral service will begin at 2 P.M. Graveside service will follow at the Jones-Lewis Cemetery.

Active pallbearers are: Chris Mullins, Jeremy Cornett, Ernie Hodge, Timmy Bumgardner, Josh Phillips & David Sachs.

Honorary pallbearers are: Larry Mullins, Earl Greer & Dr. Floyd Barker.
