Edgar E. Sluder, 78, died at his home at 417 Pennsylvania Ave., Bristol, Tennessee, Saturday after a long illness.
He was a native of Ashe County, N.C., and had lived in Bristol since 1954. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist church.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Grace Sluder; four daughters, Mrs. Viola Pierce, Elizabethton, Mrs. Bertha Hutchinson, Rockford, Tenn., Mrs. Ardna Campbell, Mountain City, and Mrs. Mabel McQueen, Shady Valley; two brothers, Carl Sluder, Bristol, and Russell Sluder, Shady Valley; 17 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildre.

Otis Sluder, age 97, of 540 Sluder Road, Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, May 9, 2005 at the Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Ashe County, NC, he lived most of his life in Shady Valley. Otis was a son of the late Amos L. and Abigail Greer Sluder and was a farmer and carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Victory Baptist Church. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Michelle Sluder and several sisters and brothers. Suviving are his wife of 69 years, Letha Sluder, five sons: Herbert Sluder and wife Betty of Winchester, VA, Alton Sluder and wife Shirley, Cline Sluder and wife Cathy, Curtis Sluder and Wife, Linda and Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula, all of Shady Valley; a sister, Edna Blevins of Shady Valley; ten grandchildren, Gavin Craig Sluder, Patricia Gayle Santiago, Patty Shoun, Tim Sluder, Jackie Sluder, David Sluder, Charlotte Berry, Leslie Hill, Kenny Sluder and Lisa Sluder. Ten great-grandchildren ande several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p. m. Wednsday, May 11, 2005 from Victory Baptist Church. Brother Eddie Porter will officiate. Music will be under the direction of Don McAllister. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2005 from the Gentry Cemetery in Shady Valley. Edna Mae "Granny" Sluder Blevins, 98, passed peacefully from this earthly life into eternal life in heaven on Sunday, May 27, 2007. She was affectionately known as "Granny" by all who knew and loved her. She came to Shady Valley, Tenn. in a covered wagon from Ashe County, N.C. when she was five years old. She was married under a large oak tree near Mountain City, Tenn. to Wheeler Howard Blevins. They were married 67 years until his death on December 17, 1994. Granny was saved and baptized in 1944. She joined the Shady Valley Baptist Church at that time and has been a faithful member for 63 years. She taught Sunday School for over 50 years, sang in the choir, helped with VBS, and belonged to the WMU. She traveled extensively in the US and Europe. She also visited the Holy Land where her Savior was born. She loved to talk about her travel experiences. Her saddest days were the days after she lost her husband and four grandsons. Her grandsons who preceded her in death were James Plummer, Tommy Blevins, Stephen Blevins and Jimmy Lafferty. She also lost an infant great-granddaughter, Kaleigh Tolliver. She was proud of her large family. They are Elmo Blevins, Emery and Clara Blevins, Lillard and Ethel Blevins, Pervis and Phyllis Blevins, Kenneth and Norma Blevins, Betty and Jim Plummer, Ethan and Connie Blevins, Reba and John Tillery, Judy and John Tucker, Naomi and Willie Hammons, and Joseph and Janice Blevins. She has 31 grandchildren, 39 greatgrandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She also has several nieces and nephews. She was the last surviving member of the Amos Lillard Sluder and Abigail Greer Sluder family. She was loved by all who knew her and will be missed by her family and friends. A memorial service will be conducted at Shady Valley Baptist Church on May 30, 2007, at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in the Shady Valley Memorial Gardens. ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Viola Ethel Sluder Pierce, 89, Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord in the company of family and loved ones Tuesday, December 21, 2010, in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

A native of Shady Valley, she was a daughter of the late Everett Edgar and Grace Robinette Sluder. She had lived most of her life in Carter County.

She was a former employee of the Magnavox Company. Mrs Pierce loved to embroider, quilt, work jigsaw puzzles and take care of her grandchildren. She was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. John B. Pierce Sr.; a daughter: Nellie Pierce Grant; and a sister, Mable McQueen.

Survivors include Three Daughters & Sons-In-Law: Wanda & Gus Johnson, Bristol, Naomi & Bill Jones, Elizabethton, and Margie & Neil Burgner, Limestone; Two Sons & Daughters-in-Law; J.B. & Tracy Pierce, Jefferson City, Missouri, and Edgar and Joyce Pierce, Jackson, Tennessee; Step-Daughter: Johnie Estep, Johnson City; Five Grandchildren: Daniel Pierce and wife, Jill, Vienna, Virginia, Cody Pierce, Monticello, Arkansas, Sarah Jones, Danielle Jones and Benjamin Jones, all of Elizabethton; Two Sisters: Ardna Campbell, Mountain City, and Bertha Hutchinson, Maryville, Tenn.; Several Step-Grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.

late Sunday night at her residence surrounded by her family. She was born October 9, 1925 to the late Edgar Everette Sluder and Gracie Eleanor Robinette Sluder. She was a member of Central Baptist Church, an original member of Johnson County Crewettes, an accomplished seamstress and quilter and she enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband W. Dale Campbell in 2006; son Randy Campbell; two sisters: Viola Pierce and Mabel McQueen; two grandsons: Carnice Campbell and infant grandson Jarrett Reece.

Those left to cherish her memory include: two daughters: Belinda (Tom) Reece and Joy Snyder, both of Mountain City, TN; two sons: Terry (Pat) Campbell of Franklin, NC and Lynn (Shirley) Campbell of Mountain City, TN; sister: Bertha Hutchinson of Knoxville, TN; nine grandchildren: Stacey Reece, Brad Reece, Tim Campbell, Matt Campbell, Courtney Garrett, Scotty Campbell, Lindsey Campbell, Malori Gentry and Trent Snyder; thirteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Basil Eugene “Gene” Sluder, 78, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2023, at the Community Living Center at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was born November 30, 1944 in Shady Valley to the late Carl and Brookie Wood Sluder. Gene was a 1964 graduate of Johnson County High School. He proudly served his country as a Marine during the Vietnam Era. He loved God and his country fervently. He retired from the City of Titusville, Fla., and was known to his co-workers as “Super Man.” He was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Veronica Hensz Sluder, April 10, 2022; his brothers, Glenn Sluder, Jack Sluder and Walter Sluder; and his sisters, Myrtle Hutchinson, Mildred Upchurch, Adelphia “Deb” French, Dora Lee Lunceford and Darla Evans. Those left to cherish his memories are his brother, William “Bill” Sluder of Bristol, Tenn.; his sisters, Dorothy “Dottie” Fullen and husband Denny and Delores “Dee” Behrens, all of New Freedom, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held on Friday, February 3, from 2 until 3 p.m. at the Shady Valley Baptist Church, Shady Valley, Tenn., followed by a memorial service at 3 p.m. with Pastor Dan Little officiating. Alton L. Sluder, age 78, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 25, 2017 at his home in Shady Valley, Tennessee. He was born December 19, 1938 to the late Otis and Letha Sluder. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Tim and his brothers: Cline, Curtis and Herbert Sluder.

Alton was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley except for a few years that he lived in Maryland where during that time he drove the bus for Continental Trailways and also transported the Washington Redskins to and from games. Alton owned and operated Sluder Brothers Logging with his brothers for many years. He and his wife Shirley retired from S&S General Store.

Alton was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 56 years, Shirley Jones Sluder; daughter, Pattie Taylor and husband Rick and their sons: Austin Shoun, Matthew Shoun, Chad Taylor, Triston, Taylor and Garrett Taylor; daughter, Jackie Sluder Grindstaff and husband Blake and their daughter, Josie Cheyenne Grindstaff; grandson, Jake Sluder (Tim's Son); brother, Kenneth Sluder and wife Eula; several nieces, nephews and extended family members as well as many close family friends.

Emery 'Tiny' Howard Blevins, age 87, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital of Abingdon, Virginia. He was born on September 3, 1929 to the late Wheeler and Edna Sluder Blevins. In addition to his parents, Tiny was preceded in death by a great granddaughter, Camron Melba Brooks.

Tiny was a lifelong resident of Shady Valley. He retired from Carr Brothers at the age of 65. He also worked for the Sluder Brothers and many others for years following his retirement. He loved his family and friends very much and they loved him. Tiny was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend to many. He loved going 'to the store' and visiting with his friends.

Tiny was a United States Army Veteran and was stationed in Greenland and TX.

He was a member of the Shady Valley Baptist Church.

Howard was born in Shady Valley on February 3, 1936, to the late Garfield Miller and Dolly Sluder Miller. In addition to his parents, Howard was predeceased by brothers, Jimmy and Winford Miller, sisters Barbara and Lillian.

MORGANTON, NC - We are saddened to announce the passing of Thomas Phil Crosswhite, age 74, on Saturday, May 20, 2023 in Morganton, North Carolina. He was born November 30, 1948 in Shady Valley, Tennessee to the late Elmer Wade Crosswhite and Mina Lou Owens Crosswhite. Thomas was a graduate of Johnson County High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a former employee of Burlington Industries.

Thomas loved traveling and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Linda Rodefer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 35 years, Melody Ann Wilson Crosswhite. His children: Jennifer Buckles of Elizabethton, TN, Kelly Stewart of Elizabethton, TN, and Bobby Stewart of Morganton, North Carolina. His siblings: Ethel Hardin of Elizabethton, TN and Betty Villarreal of Mountain City, TN, Garmol Wade Crosswhite of Elizabethton, TN, and Elmer Forrest of Bristol, TN. His grandchildren: Abby Shelton, Austin Stewart, Madison Stewart, Blake Brown and Madilyn Brown. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service for Mr. Crosswhite will be conducted Friday, May 26, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in the Crosswhite cemetery with military honors to be accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Pallbearers will be Bobby Stewart, Kelly Stewart, Jason Buckles, Freddy Villarreal, Austin Stewart and Blake Brown.
