Wound Fatal To Nave; Funeral Set Wednesday
A bullet wound inflicted by a 73-year-old woman proved fatal to Charlie Nave, 38, employe[sic] of the Elizabethton water department, who died yesterday in a Johnson City hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at the First Freewill Baptist church here.
Nave was shot December 22 by Mrs. Mary Roberts who admitted placing a .38 calibre[sic] pistol against his side and firing as he was allegedly attempting to enter her home. She said that prior to the fatal shot her 15-year-old grandson, Andrew Roberts, had fired a shot into the ground in an effort to frighten Nave away.
Both are free on $5,000 bond.

Mrs. Eva Etta Oliver, 93, 153 Opossum Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Sunday, February 2, 2003 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late John and Minnie Pierce. She was a homemaker. She was of the Baptist faith.

Mrs. Oliver was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob Oliver, April 28, 1989; by two sons, James and Paul Oliver; three daughters, Elsie Arnold, Marie Oliver, and Ruth Oliver; three brothers, Caleb, Ambers, and Charles; three sisters, Sarah, Onie, and Pearl, and three grandchildren.
Survivors include five daughters, Bertha Pea, of Liberty, Ind.; Faye Dugger, of Butler; Sarah Blevins, Onie Williams and Hazel Harding, all of Elizabethton; three sons, Joe Oliver, John Oliver, and Wayne Oliver, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Virginia Hardin, Elizabethton; 25 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and three great great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews, and a special friend, Cloa Shope, also survive.
Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

OLIVER -- Funeral services for Mrs. Eva Etta Oliver, 93, 153 Opossum Hollow Road, Elizabethton, who died Sunday, February 2, 2003, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2003 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mrs. Bowers was a homemaker. She was of the Pentecostal Faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, who died February 9, 2008; a daughter, Margaret Bowers; and several brothers and sisters.
Survivors include a granddaughter, Rebecca Bowers; a special niece, Penny Rosenboro and her husband Preston; one great-niece, Ashton Rosenboro, and one great-nephew, Jayden Rosenboro; a special friend, Kenven Richardson and wife Becky; and a host of friends and neighbors.

died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, at Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Carden was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Rhudy and Lottie Bowers Carden. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Arthene Carden, September 28, 2000.
Mr. Carden had made his home with his daughter for the past year. He was former employee of Tennessee Chair Company and retired from the Carter County School System as a custodian at Unaka High School and Hunter Elementary School. He was a member of the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Penny and Preston Rosenboro, Bristol; a sister, Eliza Bowers, Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Ashton Rosenboro and Jayden Rosenboro; and a special friend, Ella Louise Nidiffer. Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

CARDEN -- Funeral services for Herbert Hoover Carden, 72, 433 Willow Springs Road, Elizabethton, who died Tuesday, August 14, 2001, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, August 17, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Rev. Croy Nave, 92, 504 Bishop Hollow Road, Elizabethton, died Monday, November 13, 2000, at his residence following an extended illness.
Rev. Nave was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Campbell and Katie Estep Nave. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Virgie Bowers Nave, September 19, 1972, and a son, Robert Nave.
Rev. Nave was a member of and also served as pastor for several years at New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation and a former employee of Paty Lumber Company.
Survivors include three daughters and a son-in-law, Frances Nave, June Nave and Carolyn and Archie Martin, all of Elizabethton; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Willie L. and Ruth Nave and Earl E. Nave, all of Elizabethton; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother, Chester Nave, Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Chester Nave, 95, of 250 Keenburg Road, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, December 21, 2006, in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Nave was a native of Carter County and was the son on the late Robert Campbell & Mary Kate Estep Nave.
He was retired from Bemberg, had worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, and was a former part time employee of Tetrick Funeral Home. He was a member of Keenburg Freewill Baptist Church. Mr. Nave enjoyed woodworking, fishing and taking photographs.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Nave was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Chambers Nave on June 13, 2005, three brothers and one sister. He is survived by his daughter, Charlotte Campbell of Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Faye Nave of Inverness, Fl; one grandson, Steven Campbell of Elizabethton, one granddaughter and
grandson-in-law, Kathy and Kenny Clifton of Elizabethton; five great grandchildren, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton, Taylor Clifton, Dawson Clifton and Kindra Campbell all of Elizabethton; and a sister, Eola Nave of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Nave will be conducted on Saturday, December 23, 2006 at 8:00 p.m. in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel in Elizabethton with Rev. Derl Curry and Mr. David Tysinger, Minister officiating. The Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel prior to the service or at the residence, 250 Keenburg Road at other times. The graveside service and interment will be Sunday, December 24, 2006 at 2 p.m. in the Emmert Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be David Estep, Carl Burrough, Willie Nave, Justin Clifton, Logan Clifton and Kenny Clifton. Mary Charlotte Whisnant, 91, of Hampton, Tenn., passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late James and Maggie Ellen Nave.
Charlotte was an active member of Eastside Baptist Church and loved to sing in her church choir. Charlotte enjoyed cooking, canning and spending time with her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carmon Whisnant; a son, Terry Allen Whisnant; and two brothers, W.J. Nave and Dennis Nave.
Those left to cherish her memory include her three daughters, Carmen Dianne Nelson of Johnson City, Ellen Charlene Bateman of Hampton and Tammy Lynn Collins and husband Kevin of Elizabethton; two sisters, Betty Casida and Carol Davis, both of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Todd Nelson and wife Julie, Travis Nelson, Shane Bateman, Amber Hall and husband Jamie and Adam Collins and wife Emily; and one great-grandson, George Carmon Nelson. It is with mixed emotions that we announce the passing of Willa Dean Pierce, our beloved sister. We are saddened for no longer having her with us here, but overjoyed as she has been reunited with Mom, Dad, Christine and Carroll. Everyone loved Willa and we believe it was this love that kept her with us for 67 years. A native of Carter County and current resident of The Sevier House in Unicoi, she was the daughter of the late Ambers & Maggie Peters Pierce. Willa was a part of the Union Hill FWB Church family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister & brother-in-law Christine and W.J. Nave and a brother, Carroll Pierce.
Survivors include a sister: Nadine Crews, Elizabethton, Her brothers: Paul Pierce, William Pierce, both of Elizabethton, and Walter Pierce & his wife Loretta, Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, January 9, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with her nephew Rev. Bryan Smith and Rev. Roger Hayley officiating. Interment will follow in the Buckles Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

JACKSONVILLE, FL - Kenneth Leonard Williams, age 86, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 19, 2018 at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Jacksonville, as a result of a fall.

Kenneth was born in Elizabethton on December 17, 1931 to the late Clyde Williams, Sr and Flossie Williams. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Kate (Katie) Stout Williams; a sister, Nona (Sue) Williams; and a brother, Clyde Williams, Jr.

Kenneth was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Human Services, where he had served as Regional Director. He had worked as a crew member of several movie and television shows. Kenneth had played fast pitch softball for several local teams for many years and was an avid sports fan and western film buff. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tennessee and had presently attended services at the Cypress Village Retirement Community in Florida.

Several cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.

Willard Coy Bowers, 81, of Carter County, Tenn., went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, December 29, 2019, after a brief illness. Willard was born on May 15, 1938 to the late Coy and Maggie Williams Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Melissa Bowers, and a brother, Kermit Bowers.
Willard was employed by Gordons and Thomasville Furniture and retired after 30 years of service. He was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. He was also a member of Southern Harmony and Headed Home Gospel Quartet. He also accompanied the church choir.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Wilma Stevens Bowers, and son, Aaron Bowers; three brothers, Eldridge, Charles and Carroll; and three sisters, Fredia, Faye and Marge. He is survived by many nieces and nephews and his friends from The Barn, Sonny Fletcher's Store and Burger Hut.
Willard was well known for his musical talent of playing the Dobro, homemade apple butter and honey. Many friendships were made over the years and Willard treasured each and every one of them.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday, January 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Roger Haley and the Rev. Justin Hodges officiating. Music will be provided by Ronnie Blevins. Interment will follow in the Stevens Cemetery, Rittertown Road, Hampton. Active pallbearers will be Chris Bowers, Raymond Carrier, Chris Williams, Tommy Verran, Jamie McKinney and Jimmy Eggers. Honorary pallbearers will be Mack Collins, Dewey Bowers, Sonny Fletcher, Raymond Williams, Darrell Brinkley, Gale Colbaugh, Randall Lewis and his church family.

Dennis married Ruby Opal Willis on 11 May 1933 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Ruby (daughter of John R. Willis, Jr. and Luemma M. ELIZABETHTON - Willie Nave, age 90 of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with the Lord Friday, September 2, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Croy and Virgie Nave. Willie was the last remaining of his siblings. He was employed at H.T. Hackney Company for 65 years. He was very hardworking, generous and would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need. Willie was very dependable and well respected. He was a member of Eastside Freewill Baptist Church for 40 years. During various portions of that time he held the responsibility of Treasurer, Youth Director and Choir Director. He also held these responsibilities at East Fairview Freewill Baptist Church earlier in life.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Tina Hyder; step-granddaughter, Sharon Griffith Compton; son-in-law, Larry Shorter; and grandson, Curtis Blaine Hyder, Jr.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 73 years, Ruth Nave, of the home; son, Gary Nave (Mary), of Las Vegas; daughters, Pat Shorter and Patricia Bradford (Billy), both of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Heather Bradford Merritt and Michael Nave; great-grandchildren, Emily Merritt and Austin Hyder; five step-granddaughters, Sandy, Susan, Nikki, Summer and Lindsey and several step great-grandchildren.

Carolyn Sue Nave Martin, 73, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, February 9, 2020 at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Croy Luther & Virgie Bowers Nave.

Carolyn was a substitute teacher with the Carter County School System.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters: Frances Nave and June Nave and two brothers: Robert Nave and Earl Nave.

She was a member of the New Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church.

Her grandchildren was her hobby.

Survivors include her husband of 35 years: Archie “Micky” Martin. One Daughter: Melissa Buckles & husband Timmy. Four Grandchildren: Shyann Rogers, Evan Rogers, Gabriel Buckles and Titus Buckles. One Brother: Willie Nave & wife Ruth. Several nieces & nephews. Her special friends: Michael Rogers and Ashley Garland.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home. Funeral Services will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Larry Garland officiating. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Friday to go in procession to the cemetery. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2020 in the Nave Cemetery (Bishop Hollow).

JONESBOROUGH - James Dean Nave, 79, Jonesborough, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2022, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Jim was born in Johnson City to the late Carl and Margaret Bishop Nave.
Jim worked at Biff Burger until it closed and then managed the Orange Bowl close to 20 years. He later went on to work for Morris-Baker Funeral Home as a funeral assistant for over 30 years and loved his job of helping people. He was a member and Deacon of Skyline Heights Baptist Church. Jim enjoyed golfing, cooking, mowing the yard and fishing. He was such a kind man and will be missed by everyone who knew him.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by: one brother, Theodore Nave (Barbara); one niece, Debbie Phillips; brother-in-law, Daniel Vineis; and father and mother-in-law, Harry and Billie David.
Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Linda Nave, of Jonesborough; two children, Natalie Watson (James), of Jonesborough, and Mark Nave (Marco Gutierrez), of Richmond, VA; two grandchildren, Darrin Lindner (Tara), of Unicoi, and Daniel Lindner (Alyssa), of Limestone; five great grandchildren; one brother, Walter Nave (Mary), of Johnson City; niece, Angela (Donald) Payne, of Gray; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Eddie) Lawrence and Cheryl Vineis; special granddaughter, Ann Barnett; and several nieces and nephews.
The family would like to especially thank the staff with Amedisys Hospice, the nurses at JCMC and Dr. Robins for their care and compassion.

SUGAR GROVE, Va. — Dubie L. Hayes, 46, lost her battle with Leukemia and went to be with the Lord on November 30, 2017, peacefully at her home.
Dubie was born in Killeen, Texas and was preceded in death by her father, Eddie Miller; maternal grandparents, Hunter and Pauline Williams; and paternal grandparents, Jim and Julia Whitehead Miller.
She attended South Fork Baptist Church. She loved gardening and taking care of her goats and three dogs, Jake, Ellie and Nyx.
Dubie is survived by her husband, Reid Hayes; her children, Samuel and Daniel Bowers and Seth Pate, all of Elizabethton, Tenn.; her mother, Barbara Miller of Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister, Nickie Miller Vincent and husband Jeff of Shelbyville, Tenn.; brother, Eddie Miller II of Elizabethton, Tenn.; nephews, Trenton Hayes and Logan Griffey, and a niece, Tristen Griffey, that she and Reid were raising along with two step-daughters, Morgan Hayes of Alabama and Maggie Kirkbride of Cheyenne, Wyo.; nieces, Hannah Vincent and Emily Vincent Rogers and husband Cory; her mother-in-law, Fran Hayes; and close dear friends, Dawn Trivette, Lori and Jamie Carr, Jamie Goodman and Eddie Henson.
Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday, December 3, at Bradley's Funeral Home in Marion with Pastor Kenny Rich officiating. Reverend Paul “Henry” Norman Crowe went to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 24th, 2022, at the age of 83 years. He fought a good fight, he finished the race, he kept the faith.
The Lord truly blessed us with Paul. Born in Johnson City, TN, Paul spent his time on earth being the very best son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, mentor, & brother in Christ. Throughout his life, Paul enjoyed spending time with friends & family (especially “his sweetheart, Helen” & his little dog Banjo), fishing, hunting, collecting old coins, and trading cars. He dedicated his life to bringing hearts to the Lord, pastoring over his flock at Piney Grove FWB for 53 years. Our hearts ache with his passing, but we celebrate knowing that he is now shouting the victory with Jesus, family, and friends “where the roses never fade.”
Paul was preceded in death by his father, Rev. Dennis R. Crowe, mother, Ruby Crowe, brothers, Kenneth “Bud” Crowe & Dennis “Doodle” Crowe, step brother, Ron Crowe, & mother-in-law, Ruth Arnett.
