MOUNTAIN CITY - Miss Georgia Marie Johnson, age 99, of Mountain City, passed away Monday, February 6, 2006, at Watauga Medical Center. Miss Johnson was a lifelong resident of Johnson County and was a daughter of the late Arthur Glenn and Oma Payne Johnson. She was a retired school teacher and taught in the Johnson County School System and Bristol Tennessee School System. She was a member of the Johnson County Retired Teachers Association, member of the Johnson County Historical Society, and a member of Daughters of the American Revolution. Georgia was an accomplished artist and author. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Beatrice Johnson; and a brother, Orville Johnson. Survivors included her cousins of the Johnson and Payne Families and her many friends. The family will receive friends from 12 until 1 p.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2006, at the First United Methodist Church with the service to follow at 1 p.m. with James Hutchinson, Minister, and the Rev. Frankie N. Payne Combs, age 88, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014, in Cabell Huntington Hospital, Huntington, WV.
Frankie was born in Shouns, TN and resided in Johnson City for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Hobart and Lydia Ann Payne. In addition to her parents; her son of 56 years Wayne Combs; two brothers, Billy Payne and Johnny Payne; and two sisters, Lenna Payne and Dorothy Pierce preceded her in death.
Survivors include: son, Dale K. Combs and daughter-in-law, Brenda Combs; sister, Marlene Helms; grandson, Jeremy Combs; three granddaughters, Lisa Reid, Sonya Rouse, and Aimee Combs; two step-grandsons, Brendon Clark and Ryan Clark; six great grandsons; three great granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.
Frankie retired from the VA Medical Center at Mountain Home with the VA Canteen Service. She was also employed at Oak Ridge during America's secret project to create its first atomic bomb, which helped to end the war in the Pacific.
Frankie was a loving and faithfully dedicated single mother.
Although of modest means, Frankie enjoyed the experience of travel to almost every state of the United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. She also visited Canada, England, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Mexico, and Okinawa.
Special thanks to granddaughter Sonya Rouse, who provided live-in support to Frankie for the past four years. Sonya's son and Frankie's great grandson, Camron Bawgus, had a unique relationship with Frankie and provided added variety to her life.

MOUNTAIN CITY — Opal I. Gambill, age 83, of 204 Church Lane, Mountain City, went to be with our Lord Wednesday, August 2, 2006, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Elizabethton, TN.

She was a native of Johnson County and was born May 5, 1923, to the late Jess and Emma Payne Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Gambill, who were married for 63 years; also by Five sisters: Pearl Shelly, Lela Hammons, Vica Lewis, Lucille Walsh and Lorean Farmer; Four brothers: Denvil Arnold, Herman Arnold, Marvin Arnold and Ray Arnold.

She was an active member of the Ackerson Creek Church of Christ, a life time member of the American Legion Post #6908 and the VFW and was retired from Melville Shoe Company. She loved cooking and caring for her family.

Survivors include four sons: Bill and wife, Brenda Gambill, of Mountain City, Earl and wife, Mary Ann Gambill, of Mountain City, Sonny and Wife, Gail Gambill, of Mountain City, Adopted Son: Bob and wife Melinda Heck, of Mountain City; Two sisters: Nina Tedder, of Mountain City, Oshea Kirby, Newark, Delaware; Six Grandchildren: Joyce Travis, Lisa Fields, Billy Gambill, Bev Fletcher, Wayne Gambill and Mischelle Simcox; Special Friends: Mrs. Ellen Roark. Ms. Greer was a member of Antioch Baptist Church and she enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Greer, in 1989; two sons: Loyd Greer and Daniel Greer; one daughter: Betty Jane Greer; one brother: Clyde Howard and one sister: Blanche Howard.

Once called a "national treasure" for his old time mountain music singing, song writing, story telling and playing, Clint Howard died at his home with his family at his side October 16, 2011. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Howard had learned how to sing from his mother when he was 6 years old, and over the course of his lifetime, he entertained tens of thousands of people. He performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival (in the 1960s), to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the World's Fair in Knoxville, Tenn., in the 1980s. In the 1990s and into the 2000s, Mr. Howard played either alone or with Doc Watson and others at Merlefest in North Wilkesboro, N.C. He also performed at Studio One at ETSU's public radio station WETS; the Down Home in Johnson City; Old Butler Days; and at the Cranberry Festival in Shady Valley, Tenn.
In addition, the Johnson County, Tenn., native played his guitar, sang his songs and shared his jokes and old time stories with residents at area nursing homes and assisted living facilities. And in 2004, he took time from tending to his cattle and land to teach old time mountain music to at-risk young people enrolled in the Optional High School in his home county. A CD titled "Passing It On" emerged from that experience.
Mr. Howard, whose work is credited with influencing such internationally renowned musicians as Bob Dylan and the Kruger Brothers from Switzerland, performed at Carnegie Hall with Fred Price, Clarence "Tom" Ashley and Doc Watson. He once appeared on the Pete Seeger Show with Price and Watson. For many years, he performed at community centers, retirement homes, churches, festivals, fiddler's conventions, at colleges and universities and other venues with his late son Clarence Howard, his grandson Garet Howard and long-time friend Jack Proffitt. The group was known as the Clint Howard Band, and its musical legacy will live, some believe, forever.
The Kruger Brothers (Jens Kruger, Uwe Kruger, Joel Landsberg) loved dearly to visit Mr. Howard in his home on Antioch Road in Johnson County; they said their own music was rooted in his work. "Clint Howard has been known to us as one of the most respected and influential personalities in American musical history," they wrote. "His groundbreaking recordings of classic American folk repertoire have been cornerstones for countless musicians and audiences throughout the world. It is our humble belief that Clint Howard deserves to be recognized as one of the nation's greatest treasures."
Mr. Howard always seemed to have a twinkle in his eye and loved to make people laugh. Before he and his band performed, it often fell to him to prime the audience with a funny tall tale or to reminisce about what life use to be like in the hills and hollers of Johnson County when he was a boy. He often shared that he learned from his beloved mother how to sing and vary his pitch and tone; this was a key to creating the power and range of his voice. "It didn't make any difference what time of the night that was," he once told an interviewer. "Me and her would just go to singing songs out of the song book or gospel songs, or just whatever. Me and her'd sing sometimes till one or two o'clock in the morning." One of his most popular ballads, "Light in the Window," came directly from that mother/son bond, and may have been his favorite of the dozens that he and others have created.
"His natural way with songs and stories is more of a born gift than an acquired skill," said Robert Cogwell, director of the Tennessee Arts Commission Folklife Program.
Mr. Howard was a welder at the shipyard in Newport News, Va., and also at Maymead, where he retired in 1990. He also worked as a school bus driver.
He cherished his family and his community and always took care of his cows. He fiercely took objection to anyone who criticized Johnson County in even the slightest way. He loved its rugged mountainous terrain, its people and its bedrock values of the Ten Commandments, loyalty to the U.S. military and to the American flag.
He thought he was truly blessed to have been born and raised and to have lived nearly all his life in The Third community of Johnson County.
In his cowboy boots, jeans and a John Deere cap tilted slightly on his head, and with his wife Betty nearly always next to him, he was frequently seen around Mountain City behind the wheel of a pickup truck. He kept a close eye on his beef cattle, tending to them day and night, and helping deliver many a newborn calf in some of Johnson County's most ferocious blizzards.
A member and choir leader of Antioch Baptist Church and a staunch Republican, Mr. Howard served several terms as a Johnson County commissioner. More recently, and up until his death, he was a Johnson County highway commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lizzie Howard; by his brother Clyde Howard and by his sister Ida Greer. Also preceding Mr. Howard in death were his son Clarence Howard, son-in-law Sam Robinson and grandson Mitchell Howard.
Survivors are: his wife Betty Snyder Howard; daughter Patsy Robinson Timbs and husband Larry; son Ray Howard; daughter-in-law Glenda Howard; grandsons Garet Howard, Brad Howard and Clint Robinson and wife Shannon; granddaughters Sandra Howard McCloud and husband Larry, Rachel Robinson Shearin and husband John, Ashley Howard and Hana Howard. Also surviving are great grandchildren: Travis, Hank and Portia Howard; Will and Leah McCloud; Blake and Weston Robinson; Taylor, Hannah, Samantha and Jessie Shearin.
Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, October 18, 2011 from the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Pastor Ray Vaught and Pastor Steven Spencer officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service. Gladys B. Roberts, age 86, 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, TN passed away Tuesday morning, July 10, 2012 in Mountain City Care Center. She was a daughter of the late Dave Howard and Susie Potter Howard. Gladys was a member of Berea Baptist Church and she loved reading, cooking and especially loved spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Lester Osborne.

It is with great sadness that the family of Pauline D. Miller announces her passing on December 16, 2021 at the age of 94 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
Pauline was born in Johnson County, TN to the late David Howard and Susie Potter Howard. In addition to her parents she was proceeded in death by a brother Edward Howard and a sister Gladys Roberts. She was a former employee of Leco and Levi’s manufacturing companies. Pauline enjoyed crosswords, reading and growing her roses. She was of the Baptist faith.

Frederick “Glynn” Payne, 94, of Newark, DE, went to be with his Lord on September 18, 2022. He was born in 1927 on Forge Creek, Mountain City, TN to the late Roy Clyde Payne and Hettie Loretta Curd Payne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Willie “Earl” Payne and sister, Opal “Irene” Payne Richardson.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 72 years, Dorothy Roten Payne, of Newark, DE, his son, Marvin Payne (Linda) of Middletown, DE, his daughter, Cathy Cranfield (Robert) of Rehoboth Beach, DE and include his brother, Lowell “Paul” Payne (Ima Jean), of Mountain City, TN, sister-in-law, Joyce Payne of Newark, DE, brother-in-law, Fred Roten (Georgie) of Johnson City, TN, and sister-in-law, Margaret Wachenheimer (Andre) of Rochester, PA. Glynn was raised and worked on a farm in eastern Tennessee before being inducted into the Army active service in 1951. He served in the Korean War until 1953 and transferred into active reserve until 1957. His career began at the REA (Rural Electrification Administration) in Mountain City and continued after moving to Delaware at Continental Diamond Fiber Company (Newark, DE), Bell’s Supply Co. (Wilmington, DE) and retiring from Wilmington Supply Co. (Wilmington, DE).

Glynn enjoyed gardening, fishing, boating and woodworking. He was a Faithful Christian man and was an active member of EverSpring Church in St. Georges, DE.

A viewing will be held from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday, October 5, 2022 at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Highway, Newark, DE, followed by a funeral service at 12:00 pm at the funeral home. A celebratory burial service will follow at 1:00 pm at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.

Betty Murphy, age 84, of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, September 29, 2022 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born on June 8, 1938 to the late Clyde and Mary Jane Taylor. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her daughter, Debbie Forrester and brother, Jack Taylor.

Betty and her husband Bill owned and operated Lakeview Family Campground for many years and made lifelong friends and memories that will not soon be forgotten. She enjoyed being outside and especially loved to watch ‘her’ birds. More than anything, she loved spending time with her grandchildren. She was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Betty is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bill Murphy; granddaughters, Amy Dickens and husband Johnny, and Kristi Forrester; great grandchildren, Mitchell Johnson, Shane Perkins, Shawn Perkins, Kylie Morefield, Colten Grindstaff, Brayden Dickens, and Macie Morefield; sister, Linda Simcox; brother, Danny Taylor; son in law, Donnie Warren and many special friends from their campground.

Cora Bernice Payne, age 90, of Mountain City, TN, died July 10, 2015 at her home. She was born on July 3, 1925 in Johnson County, TN. She worked as a cook at various places including Burlington Industries, Johnson County Hospital, Boone Trail Dairy Bar, Mountain City Bus Station and others for many years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, quilting, gardening and canning, and making apple butter. Bernice attended Hammons Chapel Christian Church for many years and later became a member of Appalachian Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Payne, and an infant brother, Dexter Hammons.

Thomas Elmer Hammons, age 91, Mountain City, Tennessee, went to his heavenly home on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at The Waters of Roan Highlands in Roan Mountain, TN. Elmer was born on March 4, 1928 in Shouns, TN to the late Andy W. Hammons and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. Elmer was raised by his Dad and step mother, Lela Arnold Hammons after his mother passed away. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons, brother Paul Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne.

Those left to cherish his memories include two daughters, Mary Sue (Susie) Henson and husband Larry and Sandy Hammons and husband Norman; Polly Coldiron Hammons, the mother of his two daughters and the great love of his life; sister, Viola Joines; sister in law, Thelma Hammons; several nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

Elmer was a proud United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

Elmer's life work was a carpenter by trade and a licensed contractor. He built many homes in Johnson County and the surrounding area.

He was an outdoorsman, he loved to hunt and watch wildlife. He enjoyed beekeeping too. Elmer was a simple man with little needs, but loved his family and was very loved by his family. It was mostly apparent with the good care he received in the past years. A special caregiver, Monika Burgess, "Monroe" to Elmer, because he couldn't say Monika became an adopted family member.

Selmer Paul Hammons, age 89, of Forge Creek Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, went to his heavenly home on Monday, April 15, 2019, peacefully at his home. He was born on November 21, 1929 in Mountain City, TN to the late Andy W. and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. In addition to his parents, Paul was preceded in death by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons; one sister, Bernice Payne. He was raised by his grandparents, Emerson and Cora Simcox from the age of 7 months, after his mother passed away.

He was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian church, where he served as Deacon and Elder for many years.

Paul worked many years as a carpenter and brick mason. He enjoyed reading the Bible, gardening and farming. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and loved helping them anytime he could.

Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 68 years, Thelma Mast Hammons; one son, Doug Hammons and wife Michaeline; one daughter, Linda Thompson and husband Charlie; grandsons, Brandon Thompson and wife Amy and Lance Hammons and Sandra; granddaughter, who adored him, Mandy Hawkins and husband Charlie; five great grandchildren, Scottie, Gracie, Izzy, Macey and Michael; brother, Elmer Hammons; sister, Viola Joines; several nieces and nephews and many special friends.

Willie D. Hammons, age 75, left this life and entered his heavenly home on Monday, October 8, 2018.

He was born on October 4, 1943, the son of the late Ernest and Edith Hammons of the Forge Creek Community.

Those left to cherish his memories include his loving wife of 51 years, Naomi Blevins Hammons, their son, Alan Hammons and wife Sonya, and their daughter Rebecca Dietrich and husband Marc; siblings, Jean Chappell, Lynn Hammons and wife Sue, and Larry Hammons and wife Sharon; six wonderful grandchildren whom he cherished dearly, Michael Kirby, Austin Norris, Alison Dietrich, Ethan Dietrich, Oren Hammons and Eli Hammons and many nieces and nephews on both the Hammons and Blevins side of the family.

After graduating from ETSU in 1969, Willie worked in the Johnson County School System for 37 years as a teacher and Director of the Vocational Program. He had a vision to enhance the construction program by purchasing property on which to build and sell homes. He worked diligently to establish this successful program before his retirement in 2006.

Willie spent his retirement years farming and raising cattle. He worked passionately and had a successful Braunvieh cattle farm with his son, Alan. Willie served his community well. He was a lifelong member and Elder of Hammons Chapel Christian Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent for many years. He loved serving the Lord in any way he could.

He recently took on the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors of Doe Mountain Recreation Authority. He had a desire to allow people to enjoy the beauty of Johnson County through the responsible development of Doe Mountain.

Willie enjoyed spending time with friends and family and enjoying life. He was a member of The Young at Heart Square Dance Club for many years. He also enjoyed going to the Senior Center and visiting with his friends.

After retirement, Willie and Naomi traveled to several different countries and much of the United States including Alaska and the US Virgin Islands. They especially enjoyed visiting Israel and Austria.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Johnson County Senior Center or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

James D. “Jim” Head, age 71 of Mountain City, TN, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday morning, April 4, 2023 at his home. Jim was born March 20, 1952 in Mountain City, Johnson County, TN to Cora Mae Payne Head and the late Worley Ray Head. In addition to his father, Jim was preceded in death by his brother, Raymond R. Head (1984).

Jim was a 1970 graduate of Johnson County High School. He was employed at Tri-State Growers for 41 years. Jim was a member of Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday April 8, 2023 at 3:30 p.m. from Dunn Memorial Park Cemetery (1889 Forge Creek Rd. Mountain City, TN) with Minister Josh Giddings officiating.

He is survived by his mother, Cora Mae Stout of the home; his sister, Dorothy Shupe and husband Mike; brother, Steve Stout; niece, Kim Hampton; great nephew, Logan Hampton; aunt, Betty Eller; many friends, neighbors, co-workers and his church family.

Albert Glenn Arnold was born at home and grew up in Mountain City, TN. The oldest of four children born to Herman and Edna Howard Arnold: Albert, Ramon, William (Willie), and is survived by his baby sister Louise Arnold Phillips. Albert married Sarah Elizabeth Batson, and they had three children together, Steven Albert Arnold, Virginia Dawn Oswald, and Tishia Elizabeth Arnold Snyder. Their respective spouses are Pam Blankenship Arnold, Dean William Oswald, and Mitchell J. Snyder. Tishia and Mitch had the proud honor of our parents’ care for the last few years and are much appreciated.

Albert is survived by nieces and nephews as well. Raymond and Joan had Raina and Stephanie. Willie and Millie Arnold had Jeffrey and Westley Arnold, Dale and Louise Phillips had 3 boys Eddy, & Kevin Phillips. Albert and their youngest son Travis were very close. Travis preceded him and will be waiting on the other side. All the Arnold men joined different branches of service and volunteered. Albert was proud to volunteer and serve his country in the Army and will have a military funeral. In his youth he worked hard on farms. He also played Country Western Music which stemmed from his deep roots in gospel music at church. He and his sister Louise sang on the radio a time or two, and Albert traveled singing with such names as Dottie West. He was good with cars and did a little mechanical work in his youth. He was an Electrician by trade and helped many people.
Albert and his wife Sarah lived the majority of their lives in the old home stead on Arnold Road. He enjoyed sitting on the porch and watching the animals. He enjoyed watering his tomatoes. He enjoyed playing pool and singing for his friends. He enjoyed Westerns, Football, and Racing. He enjoyed looking at his wife across the room and reminding her how pretty he still thought she was after 50+ years of marriage. He will be remembered as a loving father and husband, a good friend if you needed him, and a man of few words. He didn’t say much, wouldn’t talk badly about people. When he did talk, people listened because it was worth hearing. He let people live their own lives and he didn’t judge, but if you asked, he had sound advice and knowledgeable help. He could quote scripture for the occasion if you asked for it, but he never shoved his personal beliefs down other people’s throats unless he felt he had no choice.

He will be missed here on Earth, but When the Role is Called Up Yonder, we will all be there. We rejoice that he is in his new body and no longer in any pain.

James Willie Arnold, age 73, of Mountain City, TN passed away on Friday, February 21, 2020, at his residence. He was born February 1, 1947, to the late Herman Arnold and Edna Howard Arnold. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother Raymond Arnold.

Willie was a dedicated servant of the Lord and a loving husband and father. He served his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps and cherished his country.

He was a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church, where he also served as a deacon.

Sonny Clay Gambill, age 70, passed away on May 3, 2022. Sonny was born December 30, 1951 to the late Henry Will Gambill and Opal Arnold Gambill. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Gambill.

Sonny loved sports and excelled in the JCHS Longhorn Football team from 1965 – 1969.

He enjoyed drag racing with his brothers, grandsons, and the drag racing community. He enjoyed his Monday night bowling in Boone and the league members he came to know over the past twenty years. He was a huge UT Football fan who always cheered on his VOLS.

Most of all Sonny loved his family and being the “taxi” for his grandsons’ sports. Sonny was a “helper” and enjoyed lending his hand in times of need.

He was born on July 17, 1953, to the late James Lester Osborne and Gladys Howard Roberts. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Osborne and special cousin, Bill Icenhour, by a brother, Mac Roberts, and a niece, Initia Osborne.

Deb is survived by his daughter, Megan Osborne, grandchildren, Gabriel Hensley, Adi, Nollie and Gunnar Stout, Chelsey Osborne Church and Steven Osborne, sister, Sallie Hall, brother, Doug Osborne (Camila), Charles Osborne (Denise), Darrell Osborne (Evelyn) and Lynn Osborne(Kim), two, aunts, Margaret Icenhour and Pauline Miller, special friends, Lorie Wallace, Guy Hayes and Sheila Barrette. Roy Lee Tester, age 71, of Bristol, Virginia, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at his residence. Roy was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late James Clyde Tester and Elva Irlene Dugger Tester. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Branch and Debbie Stout; one brother, James Michael Tester; and one grandson, Tyler Bowers.

Roy had worked as a Class AA Machinist and was of the Baptist faith. He was a United States Army veteran.

Tester Stout and Doris M. Tester Branch; a grandchild, Ema Jane Marie Tester; children, Sheri Campbell and James Campbell.
Anthony was of the Christian faith and attended Pinecrest Christian Church. He loved to cook and spend time with his family. He loved those around him and was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need. He was very mechanically inclined and able to fix anything that needed repaired. He always found a way to make it happen.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Donna Tester; children, Sherry Tester, Anthony B. Tester Jr., Christopher Maston Tester (Tracey Nicole), Patrick Thomas Tester of Coshocton, Ohio, Joel A. Tester (Penny), Frank Lascola and Richard Campbell; grandchildren, Andrew Tester, Aaron Stansell, Darion Jade Tester, Cassius Tester, Maston J. Tester, Mary Elva Tester, Ava Rae Tester, Kelsey Nicole Carrier, Alex Campbell and Matthew Campbell; great-grandchildren, Krisli Carrier and Chandler Carrier; and brothers and sisters, Linda K. Tester, Rose Marie Branch and Robert L. Tester. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital for the excellent care and compassion shown to Burt during his illness.

JOHNSON CITY - Norma Jean Harrison, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on October 28, 2021 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Norma was born in Carter County to the late James Clyde Tester and Elva Arlene Dugger Tester. In addition to her parents, Norma was also preceded in death by two sisters, Doris Branch and Deborah Arlene Tester Stout; and three brothers, Fred Paul Tester, Michael Tester and Dallas Tester.
Norma retired from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in the Dietary Department. She was of the Christian faith and loved going to yard sales and shopping, plants and animals.
Those left to cherish Norma’s memory include her son, Fred Harrison of the home; and two sisters, Linda Tester and Rose Branch both of Johnson City, TN. Several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Norma Jean Harrison will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 6, 2021 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Mack Presnell. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM prior to the service on Saturday.
The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Cody Farley, Dustin Stout, Robert Tester, Jessie Richardson, David Steffey and Fred Harrison.

JONESBOROUGH - Frederick Paul Tester, age 50, of Jonesborough, went to be with his Lord on October 29, 2018, at his home after a battle with stomach cancer. He was born in Elizabethton, TN to James and Elva Tester and was the youngest of ten children.

Fred, a great believer in family and responsibility, went to work at an early age as a pipefitter to help support his mother after his father's death. After many years of dedicated service, he rose to the position of crew foreman finishing his career with East Tennessee Sprinkler. Fred will be remembered as a caring and loving husband to Paula for 21 years and father to 14-year-old Shelby. A family man who was always there when needed.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, brothers' Dallas and Michael, and sisters' Doris Branch and Debbie Stout.

Those left to cherish his memory include his two brothers, Burt and Robert Tester three sisters, Linda Tester, Norma Harrison, and Rose Branch, nephew Fred Harrison III, and many nieces and nephews.

The Tester family would like to extend our gratitude to all the staff of Ballad Hospice and Shannon Huffine, caregiver.
