    ELIZABETHTON - Edith Montgomery Wilson Phillips, age 90, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by her loving family on Monday, January 23, 2017. Edith was born in her home on Walnut Mountain on March 3, 1926 to the late William Henry "W.H." Montgomery and Carrie Elizabeth Heaton Montgomery. Edith was preceded in death by her first husband, Buster Wilson, who was the father of her five children; and her second husband, Dennis Phillips, with whom she shared 18 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Wayne, Walter, Quentin, Ray G., and Lee A. Montgomery; and her sisters, Alma Scalf Banner and Ruth Mitchell.

    Edith was a homemaker and was a member of Siam Baptist Church. She and Dennis, enjoyed camping at Roan Mountain and Toe River Campground, raising a garden and canning food, and dancing at the Senior Citizen Center. She was a very caring mother, wife and sister and was loved by all she met. Her family and extended family (caretakers) worked together to keep her at home during her illness. She was very humble and gracious, always saying thank you. She enjoyed crochet, crafts of all kinds, basket making, and needlework. Most of all she loved her family and spending time with them.

    Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Jill Simerly and husband Michael, of Elizabethton and Judy Sutton and husband Michael, of Kingsport; three sons, Edward Wilson, of Hampton, Jerry Wilson of Elizabethton, and Jeffrey Wilson and wife Jean, of Elizabethton; her grandchildren, Michelle Berry, April Wheeler, Daniel, Joey, and Olivia Wilson, and Jonathan and Jason Wilson; her great grandchildren, Owen and Carly Wheeler; her sister, Anne Gragg, of Elizabethton; and her brother, Carroll Montgomery and wife Jessie, of Elizabethton.

    A graveside service to honor the life of Edith Montgomery Wilson Phillips will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park, with Rev. Jack Roddy, officiating. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 10:50 AM on Wednesday.

    The family would like to say a special thank you to Siam Baptist Church congregation, Caris Hospice staff members, Dr. Vivian Clark, Jean Wilson, Patsy Mullis, Rebekah Scheman and family, and Patty Love.

    DANDRIDGE - Paul Scalf, 78, Dandridge, Tennessee, passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 at the residence of his daughter Sonia Jeanice Banner, Hampton after an eight month illness.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Roy Scalf & Alma Montgomery Scalf Banner. He was a graduate of Hampton High School. He had owned and operated Scalf's Wholesale Bait in Dandridge for thirty years. Paul was a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge # 750, Scottish rite and Shriner. He was a member of Union Baptist Church, Hampton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Joan Shaw Scalf, a granddaughter: Rachel Ann Scalf, a daughter-in-law: Genia Scalf, one sister: Marie Bussink, and four brothers: Hampy, Jimmy, Pat & Glenn Scalf.

    Survivors in addition to his daughter Sonia include two sons: Anthony Scalf, Hampton and Wesley Scalf, Dandridge. His Grandchildren: Linda Clawson, John Paul Scalf, both of Hampton, Joy Truman, Charlie Scalf both of Jonesborough, Jason Scalf , Jesse Scalf, Dandridge. His great grandchildren: Rachel Nelson, Ayden Scalf, Patsy Ann Scalf, Billie Jean Scalf all of Hampton, Jakob Smelcer, Harlee Truman both of Jonesborough, Jason Scalf II, Anzley Scalf, Paislee Scalf all of Dandridge. His Sisters: Lorraine Campbell, Elizabethton and Jean Potter of Maryland. Several nieces & nephews. His special friends: Sam & Barbara Grindstaff.

    Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, June 26, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ronnie Campbell officiation Interment will follow in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be: Jimmy Scalf, Kevin Scalf, Michael Scalf, Josh Shankle, Robert Clawson, Mike Wallen, Joe Waycaster and Eddie Julian. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Johnny Bradshaw, Clifford Gobble and John Wallen.

    Steven Glen Scalf Sr., 74, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Monday, October 31, 2016, at his home.
    Mr. Scalf was a native of Carter County, Tenn. He was a graduate of Hampton High School and was a plumber.
    He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Scalf, and his mother, Alma Montgomery Scalf Banner, both of Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Hempy Joe Scalf, Pat Scalf and Jimmy Scalf, and a sister, Marie Bussink.
    Survivors include his wife, Cheryl Scalf; two sons, Chris Scalf and Steven Scalf Jr., both of Maryland; a step-daughter, Dawn L. Kennedy of Florida; three grandchildren, Justin, Brian and Olivia Scalf, all of Maryland; and two step-grandchildren, Breyana and Brooklyn Kennedy of Florida. He is also survived by two sisters, Jean Potter of Maryland and Lorraine Campbell of Tennessee; a brother, Paul Scalf of Tennessee; a special nephew, Michael Scalf; and two special friends, Shirley Cornett and Frank Highsmith, both of Tennessee. He will be especially missed by his furry baby, cat Shadow Scalf.
    Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, November 5, at Memorial Funeral Chapel. The family will begin receiving friends at 2 p.m. The graveside service and interment will follow the service at Clarktown Cemetery in Roan Mountain.
