    ELIZABETHTON — Mr. James Williams Smalling, 94 of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 22, 2016.

    He was born on October 31,1921, in Carter County, TN, a son of the late Sallie Williams Smalling and Ed E. Smalling.

    His wife of 63 years, Blanche Braswell Smalling and a daughter and son-in-law, Sheila and Jerry Dodson, preceded him in death.

    He graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1940 and attended ETSU. He was a Hereford Cattleman and a Citrus Farmer. He was a salesman for Security Feed and Eashman. He served for several years as President of the Farm Bureau and was a Boy Scout Leader. He was a member of Watauga Point United Methodist Church.

    Those left to cherish his memory are his daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Troy Mclnturff; son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Teresa Smalling; and a daughter Diane Smalling; four grandchildren, April (Tilo) Kuschman, Andrea (Ted) Bradford, Nathan (Laura) Mclnturff, and Erica (Stuart) Everley; nine great grandchildren, Sullivan, Jackson, Makenna, Ella, Hannah, Nolen, Connor, Anika, and Addison. Sisters, Aleta Hendrix and Hattie Ruth Whidden and family friend, JoAnn Blankenship; and many nieces and nephews.

    The family of Mr. James William Smalling will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2016, in the Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 4 p.m. with Rev. Mack Houston, Pastor Estel Williams and Pastor Mike Berry officiating.

    The graveside committal service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Monday, in the Washington County Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Charles Phipps, Tilo Kuschmann, Ted Bradford II, Stuart Everley, Brian Whidden, and Rick Burchett. Honorary Pallbearers will be Sullivan Mclnturff, Jackson Bradford, Danny Carver and George Blankenship.

    James married Blanche Braswell on 22 Nov 1940 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Blanche (daughter of Thomas W. Braswell and Mary M. Williams) was born on 14 Sep 1922 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 24 Jul 2004 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Washington County Memory Gardens, , Washington County, Tennessee.     Frances "Diane" Smalling, 62, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 11, 2018, at Hillview Health Center in Elizabethton, Tenn.
    Diane was a Carter County native and had lived her whole life on Smalling Road with her family. Diane had a special way of touching the lives of all who knew her. She never met a stranger and she never forgot a face. She loved her family, friends and especially her church family at Watauga Point United Methodist Church in Elizabethton. She was a member of the church choir, the Brenda Bishop Sunday School Class and was even voted Member of the Year in 1988. She proudly worked for 25 years at the Tennessee Vocational Workshop in Elizabethton. Diane loved bowling, painting, writing letters to friends and family, Westerns, and UT football and basketball. She also loved to go anywhere anyone would take her.
    Ms. Smalling was preceded in death by her parents, James and Blanche Braswell Smalling, and a sister and brother-in-law, Sheila and Jerry Dodson.
    Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Betty McInturff and husband Troy; her brother, Tom Smalling and wife Teresa; her nieces and nephews, April Kushmann, Andrea Bradford, Nathan McInturff, Erica Everley, Scott Smalling and Duane Smalling; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
    The family will receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday, December 15, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m., officiated by Rev. Leann K F Crandell and Rev. Mike Berry. A committal service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 16, at Washington County Memory Gardens. Family and friends are asked to gather at the graveside by 2:50 p.m. Active pallbearers are Jerry Weaver, Ted Weaver, Jackson Bradford, Sullivan McInturff, Nathan McInturff, Ted Bradford and Tilo Kushmann.
