UNICOI - Betty Ann McCurry Garland, 95, of Unicoi, died on Wednesday, October 20, 2021 at the Unicoi County Memorial Hospital. She was a native of Unicoi, daughter of the late Levi and Mary Jane Buckner McCurry.
Betty was a member of the Unicoi Free Will Baptist Church. She was also involved in the Ladies Aid, the Ladies Auxillary and Sewing 4 Souls.
Betty was a retired inspector for Baxter Pharmaceuticals.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Stewart Garland, a daughter, Carol P. Garland, a grandson, Brian Barron and all of her siblings had preceded her in death.
Those left to cherish her memory, her children, Judith “Judy” Adams, Rudy S. (Celesta) Garland, Dean G. Garland, Gene L. (Annette) Garland, Marijane (Red, dec.) and Doug A. (Renee’) Garland; twelve grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; many dear friends at Governor’s Bend Assisted Living Center and a special friend Georgia.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 12:00 pm on Saturday at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. There is a graveside service scheduled for Saturday, October 23, 2021 at 1:00 pm under the direction of Garland James. Family and friends are asked to assemble by 12:50 pm at the Roselawn Memory Gardens.

June Wilson Edwards Barham, 94, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, November 20, 2017 at Governors Bend Assisted Living in Erwin, Tennessee.

Mrs. Barham was born in Bee Log, North Carolina, on June 20, 1923, a daughter of the late William Isaac Wilson and Linnie McCurry Wilson.

June was beloved by everyone she met and was a kind and caring person, especially those she met at Governors Bend. She loved gardening, her flowers and watching college basketball. She was the loving wife of Charlie Edwards until his death in 1959, and Leon Dalton Barham who passed away in 2012. Her daughter, Mary Frances Edwards Jones and son-in-law, John Jones, preceded her in death in 2014. Her brothers, Austin, William, Alvin, Brook and Ward, along with sister, Cara (Cary) Louise Wilson Hyatt also preceded her in death.

June is survived by sister, Joyce Ramsey, and husband, Brian, of FL, and brother, Bill, and wife, Dana, of NC. Also surviving are grandchildren, Steven Jones and wife, Julia, of Gray, TN and granddaughter, Teresa Kay Jones Treadway and husband, Tony, of Johnson City, TN as well as her great grandson, Wesley Holt Higgins, of College Station, TX, and Great-Granddogs, Gracie, Skittles, Biscuit, Torie and Sophie.

While living in Newport News, June was a faithful member of Orchid Avenue Baptist Church. Upon her move to Erwin, she attended Fishery Community Church where she was a member of the Ladies Bible Study Group.

The family wishes to thank her special friend, Glenna Crain, along with friends and employees of Governors Bend who provided a loving and caring environment for June during her years as a resident.

A graveside service for Mrs. June Barham will be held at Fishery Community Church Cemetery, Erwin, TN on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. The Rev. Rusty Wishon will officiate.

James Arley Ayers passed away on July 7, 2022, at the Johnson City Medical Center after complications from a fall. “Jim” was born on March 27, 1926 and was a life-long resident of Johnson City.

Ayers of Phoenix, Arizona. In addition to his children, he leaves behind his grandchildren Jennifer Ayers Hopper (J.R.) of Phoenix, Arizona and Gregory T. Ayers (April) of Charlotte, North Carolina. His great-grandchildren who loved their “Poppy Jim” were so proud that he served in World War II and that they had the opportunity to enjoy him until the age of ninety-six. They include Landry, Caden, Tanner and Mason Ayers of Charlotte, North Carolina and Wesley, Caitlin, Adriana and Kacie Hopper of Phoenix, Arizona.

Jim served in the Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Philippines. He was very proud to be a Navy Veteran.

During his lifetime, his employment consisted of working in the furniture business in various capacities. He was an accomplished wood craftsman and made several guitars for his great-grandchildren. He received great joy listening to country music and was a self-taught pianist and guitarist.

He found the good in all humans and was a kind, loyal, and compassionate man who would do anything for his family and friends. Jim attended Otterbein United Methodist Church. His faith and his church family were very important to him. When he was in better health, he took great pleasure in assisting the church with repairs, painting, or whatever needed to be done.

In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by Nieces: Gail Hicks, Cindy Ayers, Linda Smith, Jawina Fagan and Elaine Burleson; nephews Gary McCurry and Jimmie Ayers.

The family of James “Jim” Ayers will receive friends on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at Tetrick Funeral Services from noon to 1 PM with a Celebration of Life to follow at 1 PM, with Pastor Paul Longmire officiating. CHUCKEY - Royce (Pete) Peterson, 81, of Chuckey, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021 at Greeneville Community Hospital East, after a long hard battle with cancer. Pete was born in 1940 in Unicoi County, Erwin, Tennessee. He retired from Philips Consumer Electronics after 24 years of service and attended Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church. He had served as Sunday School Superintendent, Sunday School Teacher, Choir Leader, and Youth Leader in different churches. The church family of Oak Grove has provided support, transportation, and prayers throughout his sickness. Pete was a member of most Masonic Bodies and served in each one. He obtained many positions in local, state, and national Masonic organizations as allowed and supported by his fellow masons. Royce’s work life included 10 years at Raytheon, 10 years at Formex, and 24 years at Philips Consumer Electronics. Lifelong friends were made along the way that he referred to as extended family. Pete spent much of his time enjoying his favorite hobbies, gardening, woodworking, yard work, working on cars, and helping others. Royce most loved and cherished his family.

UNICOI — Ruby Harrell Garland, age 92, of Unicoi went home to Heaven today, August 24, 2015, to join her beloved Alvin.

Ruby was born February 20, 1923, to the late Charlie and Daisy McCurry Harrell in North Carolina and came to Unicoi with her parents in a covered wagon. She was an employee of Southern Pottery for sixteen years.

Ruby was a member of Unicoi Baptist Church where she served as Treasurer and Sunday School Teacher for twenty years.

Other than her parents and brother, Buford Harrell, Ruby was preceded in death by her loving husband of sixty-three years, Alvin Garland in 2010.

Ruby loved life on the farm with Alvin and said it always gave her comfort and peace.

She leaves behind a sister-in-law, Bernice Harrell of Manchester, TN; a brother-in-law, Ralph Garland and wife, Joan of Unicoi; several nieces and nephews including a special niece and caregiver, Sharon Daniels and husband, Bob of Johnson City; a great niece, Julie Dugger and husband, Scott and their son, Taw, who were with Ruby daily; good friends Walter and Charlotte Burkett and son, Walter, Jr.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, August 26, 2015, from 12:00 noon until the hour of service at the Unicoi Funeral Home Chapel. Reverend Garry Edwards will officiate at the 1:00 PM funeral service. Music will be provided by Inez Chandler.

ELIZABETHTON - On the morning of Thursday, September 2, 2021, Phyllis Angelina White, age 78, of Elizabethton, TN passed away at Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Phyllis was born on October 10th, 1943 to Roy and Gladys McCourry in Unicoi County, TN. Phyllis met and fell in love with Gary M. White and the couple married in 1962. The couple enjoyed traveling across the globe in service of the United States Navy. Their oldest son, Gary Jr. was born while they were deployed in Spain and their youngest son, Shannon Eugene came into the world during their deployment to Norfolk, Virginia. The White’s lived many years in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Charleston, SC, Ayden, NC, Miami, FL and finally returning home to East Tennessee. Phyllis was dedicated to family and avidly researched their family trees. Phyllis had a big heart and loved animals. She enjoyed working in vet clinics and caring for many strays.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Gary, of the home; two sons, Gary Grindstaff and wife Evans and Shannon and Grindstaff and wife Ailyn and four loving grandchildren, Rhodes White, Tristan White, Rhodes August White and Angel White.

A funeral service to honor the life of Phyllis Angelina White will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, September 11, 2021 in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Chris Hughes officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 2:00 P.M. prior to the service on Saturday.

JoAnn B McKinney, age 87 of North Hwy 226, Bakersville, NC passed away December 7, 2011 at her home. A native of Mitchell County, she was the daughter of the late Dewey and Bertie Gouge Buchanan. She was a Veteran of the United States Navy and retired from Mitchell County Department of Social Services. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by a sister Willie McCullough and a brother Melvin A Buchanan.

Survivors include her two sons Daniel (Dan) McKinney and wife Angie and Chris McKinney and wife Lisa, all of Kingsport, TN, two sisters Jessie B. Hughes, of Bakersville, NC and Nell B. Johnston, of Fredricksburg, Texas, and one brother Dewey D. Buchanan Jr, of Morristown, TN, and four grandchildren Jessica, Luke, Jeremiah and Daniel.

Funeral services will be held Saturday December 10, 2011 at 1:00PM in Friendship Baptist Church with Don Ford and Bobby L. McKinney officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow the service at Green Young Cemetery with Military Funeral Honors being conducted by The North Carolina Honor Guard.

MORRISTOWN - It is with a sad heart that we have to announce the passing of Dewey David Buchanan Jr., of Morristown, TN at 1:54 a.m. May 10th. Children Dana, Rebecca and David Buchanan survive him. He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Sabra, and was the last surviving member of his family. Brother, Melvin, sisters, Nail, Willie, Jesse and JoAnn also preceded him in death. His passing came 2 months before his 95th birthday as he outlived all other family members even as far back to his Father, Dewey David Buchanan, Sr., who lived to be 93 years old. When asked how old he was, he would always tell people he was Four Score, 10+4…or for those who don’t understand how to add up a score, it would total 94.

The nickname his siblings gave him at an early age was June when he was growing up in Bakersville, NC. His love for the Mountains, trout fishing, hiking, gardening and just plain enjoying God’s creation was extraordinary.

One of many amazing accomplishments was his honorable service in the Navy, where he served during the Korean Conflict/WWII. When he told his war stories of his service, he often commanded the room because he was an awesome storyteller! During his time in the Navy, he was a Radio Signalman and at any time of the day, he could still spell anything in Morse code!

He learned at an early age to work hard, as his father, Dewey Sr. delivered the mail for 32 years in the mountains of North Carolina and during that time he only missed 2 days of work. I heard this story at his funeral about those two missed days. He had to travel over mountain to pick up the mail and on his way back to his mail route his car ran off the road on Iron Mountain during a terrible snowstorm. He had to walk home and the next day he took his mule to pull the car out of the snowbank. These were the only two days he missed delivering the mail! Our Dad also had this work ethic and his advice was “to always work hard and earn the respect and pay from your employer”. Dad represented this profile well, since he actually retired three times! He is also survived by 13 office wives that have been there for him during the good and bad times.

Dewey and Sabra had a wonderful love story that lasted over 64 years. They shared the same birthday on July 28, four years apart. He told the story that when they first met, Sabra actually went a date with his brother Melvin. When he discovered they shared the same birthday, this is what truly attracted him to her and began their strong connection that launched our family tree.

On this rainy, cool day in May 2021, in Tennessee, we have faith in the word of God in 1 Thessalonians 4:15-18 that the same love that united believers in the Lord in this life will turn our loss into triumph when we are reunited with God and lost loved ones in eternity.

Dewey will be buried alongside Sabra at Mountain Home National Cemetery at 10 am on Monday, May 17, 2021 with Rev. Lester D. Lattany officiating.

ERWIN - Ira "Pete" Rutter, age 78, Rutter Lane, Erwin, passed away on Tuesday, June 12, 2018, at Unicoi County Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit after a lengthy illness.

He was a lifelong resident of Unicoi County and son of the late Willard Brown Rutter and Mary Jane Williams Rutter.

Mr. Rutter was a United States Navy Veteran. He taught at Rock Creek Elementary for twenty-one years before his retirement. Mr. Rutter was Teacher of the Year for grades 5-8 in 1996-1997. Also, he was awarded Conservation Teacher of the Year in 1996-1997.

Pete served on the Care and Share Board for three years and was a member of the Erwin Centennial Masonic Lodge #491 F&AM for fifty-three years.

In addition to his parents, Pete was preceded in death by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Patricia Rutter on June 9, 2012; son, Ira Craig Rutter, on August 7, 2008; infant son, Jeffery Dale Rutter; one brother, Willard "Sonny" Rutter.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory, one daughter, April Danielle Britt, Johnson City; two grandsons: Liam and Jeffery Rutter; three great grandchildren: Jaxon Treadway, Henry Britt and Josephine Britt; two half-sisters: Mary Thorpe and husband, Jim, Lisa Isaacs, all of Alliance, OH; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Eunice Nellie McCoury, age 94, of Senia, passed away on Friday, Feb. 7, 2020, at Brooks- Howell Home in Asheville, NC. She was born on June 1, 1925, in Avery County, to the late Minnie “Jo” and Zelzah McCoury.

Eunice taught elementary school for more than 30 years for the Avery County School System. She enjoyed playing the piano and served as pianist at several churches. Eunice was a dedicated Christian and loved eating out with her friends.

Eunice is survived by numerous cousins.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, in the Chapel at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home in Newland.

LIMESTONE - Virdan Bret Renfro of Limestone, age 86, passed away at his home on Sunday, February 26, 2023.

He is the son of the late Ivan and Macie Renfro, of Limestone, originally of Jacks Creek NC. In addition to his parents, his loving wife, Elizabeth “Lib” Renfro, to whom he was married for 50 years, also precedes him in death.

Virdan is survived by his children; Jeffery Renfro and wife Valencie, Connie Janson and husband Robert, Dedria Renfro, Melissa Renfro, Maria York and husband Adam, and lifelong friend Mike Bynum. He is also survived by his brothers; Bobbie Terrance (Terry) and his wife Patricia, Gerald Dean and his wife Freida, and Jack Darrell and his wife Theresa, 5 grandchildren; Matthew and his wife Angela, Emily, Alicia, Joshua, Evelyn, and 5 great grandchildren; Bailee, Grady, Olin, Garrett, and Asher.

He served his country as a Chaplain’s Assistant in the United States Air Force. He also had a lengthy career with Eastman Kodak where he worked as a mechanic for over 27 years. Virdan enjoyed gardening and desert horticulture and was an avid fan of bluegrass music.

Virdan enjoyed a simple life. He will be long remembered for his hard work and being a stable provider for his family.

A graveside service to celebrate Virdan’s life will be held on Thursday, March 2, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakland Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery located at 694 Oakland Road, Telford, TN 37690.

JOHNSON CITY - Richard Wayne “Dick” Brumit, 75, of Johnson City, died Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City, son of the late R. D. Sr. and Ailene McCurry Brumit.

Richard was an active partner in The Brumit Company. The Brumit Company a real estate leasing and development firm has been in the East Tennessee area for the past 30 years. In his earlier years, Richard was active in the family business operating supermarkets and convenience stores.

In addition to his parents, a niece Leanna Stump also preceded him in death.

Survivors include his brother and sister-in-law, R. D. “Bob” Brumit, Jr. and Phyllis B. of Johnson City, a niece and her husband, Jessica B. and Hunter Burleson of Piney Flats. His sister, Rebecca Brumit Watson and niece, Emily Watson, nephew and his wife, Evan D. and Taylor Wyatt Watson all of Lawton, OK; several cousins.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 19, 2020 from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm at Morris-Baker Funeral Home, a funeral service will follow in the Oak Chapel at 4:00 pm under the direction of Rev. Jim Cambron and Evan D. Watson. A committal service will be conducted in the Monte Vista Memorial Park on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 11:00 am. Family and friends are asked to assemble by 10:50 am. Thomas F. Williams went to be with the Lord on December 28, 2021 after a brief illness. Tommy was of the Christian faith. He was born June 26, 1954 in Erwin, Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Bessie Mae Williams Wilson and W.A. Wilson, Sr., and Glennie Deaton Williams and Reverend Fulton Williams, Sr. Survivors include his wife Mary Sparks Williams. Brother-in-laws Steve Sparks (Debbie) and Mike Sparks. Children Heather Snapp (Steven) and Tyler F. Williams. His parents Maxine Wilson Williams Phillippi, and C.F. Williams, Jr. Brothers Doug Williams (Paula), and Michael Williams (Sue). UNICOI - Angela D. Rutter Sullins, 54, Unicoi, passed away Wednesday, November 2, 2022 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was a native of Johnson City and was a daughter of the late Willard Sonny Rutter and Ginger Lou Harris Hoyle. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by a brother, Todd Chapman; her maternal grandparents, O.C. Harris and Elaine Harris; also her paternal grandparents, W.B. Rutter and Jane Rutter.

Angie was a beautiful, loving mother, faithful wife, caring grandmother, and a wonderful friend. Her favorite vacations were spent at the beach, as well as any trips she got to take with her family. She loved listening to The Rolling Stones and other classic rock. Her favorite thing in the world was rooting for her son in all of his athletics. Angie was a Blue Devil to the core. Her love of her son was matched only by her adoration of her granddaughter. Angie’s greatest title was Grandmother. Some of the best of her final years were spent watching movies and cartoons with her granddaughter while painting fingers and toes together: she was the best and only customer at “Zaylah’s Salon”. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends alike; and she will never be forgotten. Finally united with her loving parents!

Survivors include her husband, Robie Sullins Sr.; her son, Jonathan Clinton Sullins and wife, Sidney of Marshall, NC; a sister, Amy Rutter of Erwin; a granddaughter, Zaylah Jayne Sullins; a niece, Hannah Carter of Knoxville; a nephew, Matthew Pate of Marshall; her step-father, Robert Vance and wife, Christy of Erwin.

Graveside service for Angela will be conducted at 11:00 AM Wednesday, November 9, 2022 at the Mountain Home National Cemetery, (Historic Section). There will be no formal visitation. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Yvonne Buchanan McKinney, age 81, of Aretis Lane in Newland, the Roaring Creek community, died Friday, May 25, 2018, at her home surrounded by her family.

Born on April 23, 1937, in Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Richard C. and Aretis Pritchard Buchanan. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Austin McKinney, who passed away in 1997.

Yvonne was a member of the Powdermill Baptist Church and was retired from the Avery County School System. She liked to laugh; she enjoyed her family, friends, and having company in her home. She loved her family and grandchildren and spending time with them.

Left to cherish her memories are her sons: Larry McKinney and wife, Kim of Wilmington, NC, and Terry 'Chub' McKinney of Little Henson Creek; her daughters: Andrea McKinney of Roaring Creek and Sandra Williams and husband, Edward of Drexel; her sister: Sandra Lance of Roaring Creek; her brother: Charles Buchanan and wife, Brenda of Plumtree; her grandchildren: Richard McKinney, Matthew McKinney, Joshua Sparks, Bryce McKinney and Noah Hicks; and her great grandchild: Shyla McKinney.
