A native of Johnson County, he had practiced medicine in the area for many years. He was a member of the Rock Springs Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Creek Lodge F. & A.M. of Butler. He was recently awarded a 50-year certificate by the lodge.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Mollie Proffitt; three sons, J. G. and John H. of Cumberland, Va., and Sam of Williamsburg, Va.; two daughters, Mrs. Jane West and Mrs. Pearlie Matheson, both of Butler; two brothers, John of Elizabethton and Cannon of Oregon, and six grandchildren.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late John & Laura Elizabeth Morley Proffitt. Ada was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a homemaker and former employee of Kyle's Korner and Nettie Lee. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: William Luther Nave, Grandson: Melvin Lee Nave, Granddaughters: Laura Carrier and Chrissy Hartman, two brothers: Hendrix and Harry Proffitt, five sisters: Margaret Williams, Wynona Williams, Ida Cordell, Violet Richardson and Gertrude Nave and a great grandson: Matthew Lee Hartman.

Left to cherish her memory includes her son and daughter-in-law: Melvin & Shirley Nave, Daughters & sons-in-law: Doris & Waymon Carrier and Diane & Roger Deal. She was born on August 3, 1921 to the late Daniel and Ada Proffitt Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, Leta was preceeded in death by her husband of 74 years, Herbert Lewis, who passed away November 12, 2016; brothers: Edward Grindstaff of Mountain City and Thomas Grindstaff of Lexington, NC; sisters: Myrtle Forrester and Lena Garland, both of Mountain City and son-in-law, Jim Dugger of Kingsport.

Leta was a graduate of Watauga Academy in Old Butler and the oldest member of Midway Baptist Church of Butler, Tennessee.

Those left to cherish her memories include her daughter, Evelyn Dugger of Kingsport, TN; grandson, Layne Dugger and his wife Dianne; special great granddaughters, Reagan and Delaney Dugger, all of Windermere, FL; special nieces, Kathy G. Hinkle of Lexington, NC and Diane Hazelwood of VA; SPECIAL NIEGHBORS: Christal and Greg and Carolyn and Raymond and many special friends and neighbors.

Mr. Grindstaff was born in Johnson County, TN, on February 9, 1924, to Daniel Grindstaff and Ada Proffitt Grindstaff. Before retiring, he was an auto dealer at Johnson Motor Company and Grindstaff Chevrolet in Mountain City, TN. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Butler, TN. His wife, Thelma Hammons Grindstaff, and sister, Lena Garland, preceded him in death. JOHNSON CITY — William Paul "Bill" Grindstaff, 88, of Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at his home.

He was a native of Washington County, son of the late Serena Bell Grindstaff Grindstaff. He was a veteran of WWII, Korea and Viet Nam having proudly served in both the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force retiring in 1969. He attended Keystone Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Margie Ledwell Grindstaff of the home; children, Kenneth Hodge, Barbara Furchess, Sharon Boles, Cindy Abel, and Janice Swanner; thirteen grandchildren; twenty five great grandchildren; one great great grandson; a special grandson, Chad Abel; a special niece, Norma Scott.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 3, 2016, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home from 4:30 until 6:00 p.m.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, April 4, 2016, at 10:45 a.m. at the Mountain Home National Cemetery under the direction of a VA Chaplain. The Boone Dam VFW and the Tennessee National Guard will accord military honors. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Mrs. Slemp was a native of Johnson County and had lived most of her life in Carter County. She was a daughter of the late Joseph Proffitt Sr. and Pearl Williams Proffitt and was also preceded in death by her husband, William L. Slemp, in 1978, a sister and three brothers.

Mrs. Slemp was a homemaker and a member of Slagle United Methodist Church.

James served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve and was a 1961 graduate of Unaka High School. He was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Dan Proffitt.
Those left to cherish his memory are his special friend of 30 years, Kathryn Lewis; two children, Wayne Lenard Proffitt and wife Diane and Brenda Adams and husband Larry; two brothers, Dwight Proffitt and wife Regina and Edwin Proffitt and wife Linda; three sisters, Diane O’Dell and husband Wayne, Marion Osborne and Grace Davis; and his step-mother, Hazel Proffitt. A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach. She had lived a number of years in Elizabethton. She was a housewife, Mom and Nannie. Mrs. McCoury was a Charter Member of Harvest Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry McCoury; and Five Brothers, Clyde, Junior, Billy, Has and J.G. Deloach.

Survivors include A Son & Daughter-in-Law: Jeff and Dee McCoury, Elizabethton; A Daughter and Son-in-Law: Neci and Pooner Powell, Elizabethton; A Step-Daughter: Dora McCoury of Georgia; A Step-Son: Sonny McCoury, Jacksonville, Florida; Five Sisters: Pauline Gentry, Emily City, Michigan, Hazel Pleasant, Butler, Mary Cassar, Concord, North Carolina, Laura Deloach and Elmina Deloach, both of Elizabethton; A Brother: Floyd Deloach, Elizabethton; Four Grandchildren: Breanna McCoury and Kristin Powell, both of Elizabethton, Tammy McCoury and Timmy McCoury, both of Jacksonville, Florida; Two Great Granddaughters of Jacksonville, Florida; and a Host of Nieces & Nephews & Friends.

Born April 14, 1928, in Johnson County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Roscoe and Stella Grindstaff Deloach.

She retired from the food service industry after 45 years of service and along with her late husband, Renard, were active members of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church in Gray, Tennessee. She has been a resident of Salisbury, NC for ten years and a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Renard (Ron) Cassar, on December 21, 1976, and by five brothers and three sisters.

She is survived by her three daughters, Rebecca Terry and her husband, Glenn, of Salisbury, NC, Stella Isenberg and her husband, Roy, of Gray, Tennessee, Sharon Pontius and her husband, Brian, of Raleigh, NC; two sisters, Laura and Elmina Deloach, and a brother, Floyd Deloach, all from Elizabethton, Tennessee; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 15, 2009, at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tennessee.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Hugh T. and Hazel Caudill Grindstaff.
Carol was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. She retired from Shufford Mills in Granite Falls, N.C. She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Rocky L. Tester; a granddaughter, Terrilynn Lewis; and a brother, Robert Grindstaff.
Survivors include a daughter, Teresa Diane Peayatte, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Matthew Lewis, Andy Lance Lewis, Stephen Steel Tester and Zoya Starr Tester; four great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Robert Lee Grindstaff II.

Jerry Wayne Grindstaff, age 74, went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Saturday morning, April 22, 2017 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was the son of the late Robert Earl Grindstaff and Lora Shouse Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his only daughter, Rachel; his brothers, Tex Grindstaff and Joe Shouse; and one nephew, Robert Grindstaff.

Jerry was born in Carter County and graduated from Elizabethton High School. He was a member of Unaka Baptist Church, where he played the bass guitar. He worked at North American Rayon Corporation in the 3rd Unit until it closed. He had also worked in the DD Twisting, American Air Filter and retired from Snap-On Tools after 20 years of service. Most of all, Jerry will be remembered for the loving husband, father, brother and friend he was and will be missed by all that knew him.

Left to cherish his memory include his wife of 50 years, Shirley Arnold Grindstaff; his sisters, Sheila Nidiffer and husband Larry, of Elizabethton, and Janice Calloway, of Elkhart, Indiana; one brother, Bob Grindstaff and wife Helen; one sister-in-law, Thelma Grindstaff, of Elizabethton; a brother-in-law, J.D. and Debra Arnold, also of Elizabethton; three nephews, T.J. Stephen Greene, Rev. Dennis Wilson and Rev. Walker Roberson, officiating. Music selections by his daughter, Rachel Grindstaff, as well as a solo by his sister, Sheila Nidiffer. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Wednesday; or at the residence at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. ELIZABETHTON - Bobby Gene Grindstaff, 73, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, September 11, 2017 at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert Earl & Lora Shouse Grindstaff. He served in the United States Army. Bobby was retired from Snap-On-Tools as an Electronic Technician. He was a member of Lynn Valley Baptist. He loved to play the Guitar, Banjo, Harmonica, sing in church, and collected old Westerns. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Robert Grindstaff, and three brothers: Jerry Grindstaff, Tex Grindstaff and Joe Shouse.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years: Helen Earnhardt Grindstaff. A Son: Michael Keith Browder and wife Angie Greene Browder. A Daughter: Selena Dawn Norris and Husband Johnny Norris, Jr. Two Sisters: Sheila Nidiffer & husband Larry Nidiffer and Janice Calloway. BUTLER — Verda Graybeal, age 73, of Butler, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord on Friday, January 8, 2016, at the Bristol Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

She was born on November 20, 1942, daughter of the late Fred and Lona Stout Elliott.

In addition to her parents, Verda was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Graybeal, who passed March 11, 2010 and her sister, Betty Phillips.

Verda was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved visiting and spending time with neighbors and friends. Verda loved summertime, raising a vegetable garden and growing beautiful flowers. She was adored by all who knew her and will be dearly missed.

Verda was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church.

Her memory and life will be cherished by her husband and best friend, Bobby Graybeal; son, Tommy Tolley; brother, Earnest and Constance Elliott; sister, Mary Shepherd; step sister, Mary Jane Sexton and husband Joe; daughter-in-law and mother of Verda's grandchildren, Angie Perry Graybeal; grandchildren, Shonae Graybeal and Hunter Graybeal; nieces, Joni Shepherd, Lori Deloach and Gloria South; nephews, Marty Elliott and Barry Elliott; many more special nieces and nephews and many, many special friends.

The family will receive friends from 3 - 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 10, 2016, at the Rock Springs Baptist Church with the service following at 4:00 p.m. with Pastor Harvey White officiating.

JOHNSON CITY - Juanita DeLoach Hicks, age 68, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 at her residence. Juanita was born in Carter County to the late JG DeLoach and Dorothy Nadine Ellis DeLoach. In addition to her parents, Juanita was also preceded in death by her daughter, Brandy Ann Hicks; her oldest brother, Burlus J. DeLoach and another brother, Kenneth M. DeLoach.
Juanita retired from Kennametal as a machinist and was a member of Grace Baptist Church of Jonson City.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, David M. Hicks, of the home; a sister, Dorothy F. Cooper (Dennis) of Athens, TN; a brother, Victor S. DeLoach (Judy) of Elizabethton, TN; a special adopted son, Charlie Norman (Beth) of Elizabethton; and a lifelong friend, Paula “Polly” Jones Grindstaff. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
A graveside service to honor the life of Juanita DeLoach Hicks will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 30, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Hobbie McCreary officiating. Music will be provided by Rick Sweeney. Active pallbearers will be Joseph Taylor, Vic DeLoach, Stacy Whitson, Russell Cooper, Brian DeLoach, Bradley Whitson, Josh Whitson and Gage DeLoach.

Died:
James Grindstaff, age 56, of Punta Gorda, Florida passed away on November 27, 2021 after a brief illness. A native of Johnson County, TN, he was born on July 17, 1965 to the late Carl Grindstaff Jr. and Novella Grindstaff.

Jim was a United States veteran and a production worker for Bosch Braking Systems. He was a proud member of UAW Local 2155 where he held several elected positions.

Jim is survived by many loving family members and friends.

Per Jim’s wishes he will be cremated and laid to rest with his parents and grandparents.
