Bill Birchfield, 79, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Friday, February 19, 2021, from Johnson City Medical Center.
Bill was a native of Roan Mountain and a son of the late Frank Birchfield and Florence Elliott Birchfield. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter-in-law, Cindy H. Birchfield.
Bill earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Lees-McRae and East Tennessee State University. Bill’s teaching and coaching career spanned nearly three decades with time spent at Unaka High School and completed with 25 years at Cloudland High School. Bill enjoyed farming, going to livestock markets, and following the athletic careers of his sons and grandchildren.
Bill is survived by his wife of 56 years, Eloise H. Birchfield, of the home; two sons, Randy Birchfield of Roan Mountain and Matt Birchfield and wife Kerri of Elizabethton; five grandchildren and two expected great-grandchildren, Colby Birchfield and wife Karmen, Conner Birchfield, Leah Birchfield, Kenzie Birchfield and Kendall Birchfield; and three brothers, Denton Birchfield, Dallas Birchfield and Rick Birchfield, all of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Bill Birchfield will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 23, at the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, and Pastor Rick Birchfield officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the service. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 24, in the Birchfield Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Colby Birchfield, Conner Birchfield, Denton Birchfield, Dallas Birchfield, Johnny Ledford, Tim Barnett, Chad McKinney and Sam Potter. Honorary pallbearers will be the 1968 Cloudland Boy’s State Tournament Basketball Team and the Cloudland Lady Highlanders Basketball Team.

On Wednesday, March 3, 2021, Vern C. Shell, 82, went home to be with the Lord while at his residence. Vern was born in Carter County to the late Frank Shell and Glenna Birchfield Shell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Vaughn Shell and Ricky Shell, one infant sister, Melba Jean Shell, two sisters-in-law, Janice Thompson and Tammy Plank.

Vern was a graduate of Lamar High School. He was retired from General Motors in Flint, Michigan. He was a member and greeter of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He was a member of the UAW Local 659 in Flint Michigan. He loved to be doing yard work and taking his grandchildren for rides on the lawn mower. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol “Cookie” Scott Shell. Two sons, David Shell (Angie) and Mike Shell. 4 grandchildren, Tara Moore (Brad), Zachary Shell (Brittany), Taylor Shell and Emily Shell. One great-granddaughter, Lexie Moore, Two sisters, Norma Trent and Roma “Teddy” Moore and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Cleveland Clinic, Amedisys Hospice and Dr. James Hanson and nurses.

Funeral services for Vern C. Shell will be conducted on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. at the Cherry Grove Baptist Church of Jonesborough with Pastor Tommy Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Mike Hensley, Luke Cole, Scott Brall, Earl Hughes, Logan Bolton and David Hopson serving as pallbearers. UNICOI - Tom Gouge, age 86, of Unicoi, passed away on Sunday, April 16, 2023 at his home. A native of Limestone Cove, Tom is a son of the late Clyde Samuel and Daisy Lee (Birchfield) Gouge. Served many years as an employee of the United States Forestry Service, most recently as a member of the Hot Shots, until his retirement. Tom was a member of Roans Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was an entered apprentice Mason and enjoyed gardening, collecting antiques, hunting and woodworking. In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his wife, Nadine Gouge; son, Nathan Gouge; stepson, Kenneth Leonard, great-granddaughter, Paislee Gouge; three sisters: Martha Jo Garst, Nancy Gonzalez and Dean Hubbard; and three brothers: Bill Gouge, Sammy Gouge and Lynn Gouge.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. She was a member of Grays Chapel Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker and a member of Order of Eastern Star Hampton Chapter #470.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Walter D. Mr. Paul Johnson, age 82, of Roan Mountain, TN passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018

at his residence. A native of Roan Mountain, he was the son of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired U.S. Navy Chief and he served during the Vietnam War. He was the owner of the White Way Grill. Mr. Johnson was the V.F.W. Post # 2166 Commander and a member and Past Master of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM and was a past Vice-President and Founder of the Jericho Shrine Temple of Roan Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katrene Willis Johnson and five sisters, Viola Roark, Edith Holdren, Deliah Freeman, Creola Gentry and Ora Tony. Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Paula Johnson Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Laura Johnson Szillus and husband Ken, Rio Rancho, NM. Two granddaughters, Paulina Katrene Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Angela Szillus, Rio Rancho, NM also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Paul Johnson will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018 in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. Masonic service will be held at the funeral home by the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the service on Sunday in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

Alta Peoples Barwick, 77, Carter County, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a brief illness.

Alta was born on September 17, 1945, in Johnson City and grew up in neighboring Carter County, where she had lived for the last 30 years. She was the daughter of the late John Robert Peoples and Juanita Wills Peoples, both of the Central Community.

From third grade to her graduation from high school, she attended the University School at East Tennessee State University. In 1967 she completed her bachelor’s degree in sociology, psychology, and social welfare from ETSU followed by a Master’s of Social Work from the University of Tennessee.

Early in her career, Alta served as a truant officer in the Johnson City school system. In the following years she worked at the Child Development Center in Memphis, TN and as a neonatal intensive care social worker at the Medical Center in Columbus, GA. Much of her life was dedicated to volunteer work in the communities where her husband’s military career took her and to raising her daughters and building a home for her family. She held a variety of offices in the Officers’ Wives Club at William Beaumont Army Medical Center, in El Paso, TX and was an active volunteer at Fort Benning, GA. She served on the board of the El Paso Symphony Orchestra, organized a support group for families during Operation Desert Storm and was a recent past-president and board member of the Elizabethton, TN Friends of the Library. Alta enjoyed gardening, was an avid reader, and had a special place in her heart for the stray cats and dogs that she cared for over the years.

She is survived by: Dr. Mike Barwick; daughters, Susan and Elizabeth; grandchildren, Emily and Cameron; and great-grandson, David.

A memorial service will be held for Alta at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. The Oak Hall will open for attendees to gather at 2:30 PM. The family requests that those attending bring their best memory of Alta, to participate in sharing brief recollections of her life during the service.

Jesse James Birchfield, of Elizabethton, a wonderful great big beautiful Christian man, who was so loving to everyone, left this earth Tuesday, June 30, 2015, to live with Jesus. He was born July 21, 1931 in Carter County to the late Jesse James and Sudie Graybeal Birchfield.
Mr. Birchfield was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Duke University. Jesse served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a former teacher and coach at Unaka High School and a retired District Manager with Syntex Pharmaceutical of California. He was a former Professional Football Player and was an official with the Southern Conference of Football.
Jesse was a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the deacon board, treasurer and choir member of First Free Will Baptist Church for 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Vivian Baker and Doris Lawrence; his brother, Robert "D.L." Birchfield; his precious mother-in-law, Georgia Kate Pope; his brothers-in-law, Sonny Hale and Jerry Pope; and sister-in-law, Joy Pope.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce Pope Birchfield; daughter, Dr. Jessica "Katie" Gladstone and husband Bob of Hollywood, Fla.; sister-in-law, Leta Hale, and many special nieces, nephews and cousins; a god child, Tiffany Taylor Jenkins; and his special angel, whom he loved dearly, Judy Carver Deloach.
A service to celebrate the life of Jess Birchfield will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Raymond Amos and the Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Music will be by his daughter, Dr. Katie Gladstone, and David Arney. Lonnie Roark, age 70, of Mooresville, North Carolina, went home to be with his Lord and his beautiful wife Judy, on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, North Carolina. Lonnie was born on February 18, 1946 to the late Walter and Viola Johnson Roark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Hitechew Roark; and one brother, David Roark.

Lonnie retired as a quality control manager and was a United States Marine veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed hot rod cars, gardening, and reading and studying the Bible. Lonnie was a loving, gentle faithful man, who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

LAUDERHILL, FL - Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone of Lauderhill, Florida died Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the University Hospital, Tamarac, Florida.

Katie was born March 17, 1962 in the Johnson City Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Joyce Pope Birchfield and the late Jesse James Birchfield. Kate was a member of the First Freewill Baptist church of Elizabethton, Tennessee. She was a very active church member in Florida leading the youth choir and was a soloist.

Katie was a wonderful, beautiful lady with so much heart. She worked diligently to do the work of the Lord. Her ability to pray would bring the spirit of the Lord to all those present.

Katie was a 1980 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She earned a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State University and was a member of the Jazz Singers and Dancers. Katie received her Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Katie was the owner and operator of I Care for Eyes in Pembrook Pines, Florida where she practiced for 27 years. She was fluent in Spanish as many of her patients were Hispanic. Katie was known by her patients for the loving special care they received.

Katie Loved the water, especially skiing and spending time on her house boat the Katiedid on Watauga Lake.

Katie was proceeded in death by her father, Jesse James Birchfield, her maternal grandmother, Georgia (Mama Georgia) Pope, her paternal grandparents, Sudie Birchfield and Jesse Birchfield,Sr., an uncle, Sonny Hale and an uncle and aunt Jerry and Joyce Pope.

Those left to cherish her memory include; her husband, Robert Gladstone of the home, her mother Joyce Pope Birchfield, her special aunt, Leta Hale, cousins, Judy Carol DeLoach and her husband Victor, Tiffany Jenkins, Joey Garrison and her husband Josh, Whitney Taylor, Joseph Taylor and his wife Leslie and her Godson, Vic DeLoach, two much loved fur babies, Taipei and Hanji.

A service to honor Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday in the chapel of the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton, TN. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:45 PM Thursday.

Presiding ministers will be Rev. Raymond Amos and Rev. Randy Johnson.
