Johnson was the retired owner and operator of Johnson Electric Company. He
was a 50-year member of Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge 566 F & AM. Mr. Johnson
was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran.

Omer "Wilt" Johnson, 99, of Roan Mountain, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017, at The Waters at Roan Highlands Nursing Center. Mr. Johnson was born in Carter County and was the son of the late Jacob and Dovie Ledford Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Earl Johnson, Ed Johnson, Ike Johnson, Clarence Johnson and Dayton Johnson; four sisters, Ballie Brown, Lori McMahan, Pearl Johnson and Cenia Cordell; and three grandchildren, Sherry Babb, Timmy Woodby and Paul Hathaway.
Mr. Johnson was a member of St. John's Baptist Church. He enjoyed the outdoors, farming, logging and working with his horses.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Texie Johnson, Roan Mountain; four daughters, Margaret Whitehead (Arnold), Roan Mountain, Grace Wagner, Hampton, Frankie Woodby, Elizabethton, and Robin McKinney, Roan Mountain; two sons, Jerry Johnson, Elizabethton, and Wilson "Junior" Johnson, Hampton; 11 grandchildren, Melissa Doyle, Teresa Simerly, Michael Woodby, Dusty Woodby, Wesley Woodby, Randy Johnson, Eddie Johnson, Carrie Johnson, Christy Johnson, Tammie Rinehart and Travis McKinney; 15 great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. The graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 26, in the Johnson-Roanview Cemetery with Rev. Randy English officiating. Active pallbearers will be Andrew Jones, Merle Townsend, Jeff McKinney with others selected from family and friends. Mr. Paul Johnson, age 82, of Roan Mountain, TN passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018

at his residence. A native of Roan Mountain, he was the son of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired U.S. Navy Chief and he served during the Vietnam War. He was the owner of the White Way Grill. Mr. Johnson was the V.F.W. Post # 2166 Commander and a member and Past Master of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM and was a past Vice-President and Founder of the Jericho Shrine Temple of Roan Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katrene Willis Johnson and five sisters, Viola Roark, Edith Holdren, Deliah Freeman, Creola Gentry and Ora Tony. Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Paula Johnson Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Laura Johnson Szillus and husband Ken, Rio Rancho, NM. Two granddaughters, Paulina Katrene Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Angela Szillus, Rio Rancho, NM also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Paul Johnson will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018 in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. Masonic service will be held at the funeral home by the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service.

Mrs. Nell V. Calhoun Cuthbertson (Mamma Nell), age 84, peacefully went to her heavenly home February 14, 2019.

She was born the eighth child on June 7, 1934 to Starlin Isaac Calhoun and Jodie Jane Benfield Calhoun in Mitchell County, N.C.

She was married to Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson in July 1954.

Preceding her in death were her Parents: Starlin and Jodie; her husband: Floyd (Skeeze) Cuthbertson; Brother: Coye A Calhoun (Elsie) and six Sisters: Commeylee Sluder (Claude), Amey Sparks (Carl), Agnes Cooper (Dallas), Iris Cooper (Norman), Lucille Sparks (Newton) and Clara Wise (Alvin).

Although Nell had many siblings, she was the last child born and had many nephews and nieces her own age that she grew up with and stayed close.

Nell has two daughters: Debbie and Kelly, and two Sons-in-law: Bobby Blalock and Gene Annas (deceased). Also surviving are three Granddaughters: Shea Blalock Anderson (Eddie), Jodie Blalock Walker (Seth), McKinnley Elizabeth Annas (Abbey); and one Great-Granddaughter: Lucy M. Walker.

Nell was a beautiful gentle soul who loved everyone. She worked at various jobs during her life, the longest being a server at The Broyhill Center at App State where she retired. She faced several illnesses head on and endured them with grace and willpower. Nell was a member of First Baptist Church of Crossnore. She loved to sing and listen to old time gospel hymns.

Services for Nell V. Cuthbertson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Crossnore First Baptist Church, with Lander Hefner officiating.

The family will receive friends beginning at noon to 2 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be in the Cuthbertson Cemetery

She was of the Baptist Faith. She enjoyed flower gardening and canning. Her favorite radio program was the "Swap Shop."

Rev. James William "Bill" Jaynes, age 75, of 110 Dogwood Acres Road, Hampton, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 05, 2012 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a Carter County native and was born on October 26, 1936 to the late Claude H. "Pappa Joe" and Mary Williams "Mama Jo" Jaynes. Mr. Jaynes was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and a graduate of East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and retired as a supervisor for the Department of Human Services. Mr. Jaynes was also a retired minister having pastored for over 30 years at several churches, including, Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church, Sunset Free Will Baptist Church, Morgan's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, and Green Mountain Free Will Baptist Church. He was presently serving as deacon at Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church where he was an active member. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, June Jaynes Harrison and a brother-in-law, Max Harrison. Survivors include his loving and caring wife of 50 years, Thelma Cates Jaynes; a son, Jack Allen Jaynes, Hampton; a daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Kent Burdick; Hampton; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Sally Cates, Rev. Garland and Doris James, Gilbert and Judy Honeycutt, and Ben and Joy Williams. Several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The celebration of life service will be conducted on Tuesday, February 7th at 8:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Shane Waters officiating. Mr. Gilbert Honeycutt will deliver the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Bobby Lee Cates. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM, prior to the service, and at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, February 8th at 10:00 AM at the John Whitehead Cemetery in Hampton. James "Jim" Jaynes, 69, of Newland, NC, peacefully passed away on September 13, 2022 after a long battle with Vascular Dementia. He was born in Elizabethton, TN to the late James Alvin and Katrina Carrico Jaynes on December 7, 1952. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Ann and Joyce.

Jim leaves to cherish his memory a wife of 51 years, Carolyn Harmon Jaynes; two sons, Danny Jaynes (wife Amy), Derick Jaynes (fiancé' Tara) of Elk Park, three grandchildren, Emma Dula (husband Tyler), Celia Jaynes and Brock Jaynes all of Elk Park, a brother Michael Leon Jaynes (wife Patty) of Georgia and Newland, sisters Martha Blanton (husband Chris) of Spruce Pine and Jenny Jaynes of Elizabethton. Jim had several nieces and nephews whom he loved as well, Lori, Diana, Ben, Trina, Nicole, Katie, Sydney, Keona, Rachel, James Wesley, Sara, Koty and Stone and many great nieces and nephews.

Jim was a small engine repair man, farmer, son, and brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, deacon and a good friend to many. Jim was passionate about his family foremost, his work as a small engine repair man, farming and raising cattle, and his hobby for trains. He dedicated his life to his work, his family, his church at Fellowship Presbyterian in Crossnore. Jim had a great laugh. After he graduated he had a job with Tate Goodman's small engine repair shop as a repair man. This kick started a career in that field and he continued to work for the Johnson Family after they acquired the business until he bought the business and ran it under Avery Power and Equipment for many years.

Jim loved his family, he was a dedicated father. His children went on to pursue careers in mechanics and construction. Jim was a strong, good loving, and supportive father and grandfather. His knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family. Jim was also a passionate train enthusiast. He spent many weekends of hiking to many train trestles and tunnels in the area with his family by his side. He spent most of his retirement on the farm and with his family.

Visitation for Jim was held September 15 at the Fellowship Presbyterian Church. The service was held September 16, at 11 a.m., also at Fellowship Presbyterian Church. Graveside service followed at Elk Mountain Cemetery in Plumtree.

Colleen loved working at the Shady Lawn Restaurant, where she enjoyed talking with and serving her customers. She never met a stranger and was always cheerful and full of life. People would drive for miles just to eat her magnificent cooking. Colleen also enjoyed traveling and was still driving at the young age of 93.

Juanita Johnson Hodges of Hendersonville NC, Newland NC, and Canton OH, passed away at 11:00 pm Monday, December 24, 2012 at the Elizabeth House in Hendersonville.
She worked as a Real Estate Broker in Canton Ohio from the mid-1960s through the mid-1980s, raised a family, and then retired to North Carolina with her husband Frank. Juanita, born February 12, 1929, was the tenth of twelve children born to William A. Johnson and Auby Cornett Johnson of Newland, NC. Juanita was preceded in death by her son Daryl, her husband of 61 years Frank William Hodges, originally of Boone, NC, and nine of her brothers and sisters. Her surviving sisters are Willa Mae Sluder and Margaret Ledford of Newland.
Juanita is also survived by her children; Marlene and her husband David Kirk and their son D.J. of St. Louis, Marlene's son Daniel Cusma of Houston and his wife Elizabeth, Lawrence and his wife Sherry of Hendersonville and their son Jason and daughter Beth Owenby and Beth's husband Mark of Asheville, NC; Daryl's daughters Reina Perkins and husband Robert and Kelly Williams of Houston; and Jeffrey and his wife Cecelia of Houston. Survivors also include four great grandchildren.
Friends will be received before the service from 1:00 – 2:00 pm at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Newland, NC. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at the Fork Mountain Cemetery.

Margaret Johnson Ledford, age 82, of Nebo, slipped away peacefully with her family by her side on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at The McDowell Hospital.

Born in Avery County, North Carolina on February 26, 1934, she was the daughter of the late William and Auby Cornett Johnson.

A loving mother, grandmother and sister, Margaret took pride in helping others, and was known for loving everyone she encountered. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Lon James Ledford, Sr., who was a United States Army/United States Air Force veteran and served during the Korean War; two daughters, Brenda Kay Ledford and Pamela Gail Christ; and one granddaughter, Kennette Dotson.

Margaret is survived by two daughters, Rowena Ledford Smith (Richard) of Morganton and Debbie Ledford (Mason Pierce) of Shelby; one son, Lon James Ledford, Jr. (Tara) of Pinehurst; one sister, Willa Mae Sluder of Newland; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Freewill Baptist Church with Revs. Rick Wood and Stephen Reeves officiating. Interment will follow at Cane Creek Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery in Bakersville.

Son of the late Chester Prather and Arizona "Zona" Carpenter Shook, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Liston Prather, Tom Shook, Carrol Stamey, and son-in-law, James Parker. He was a veteran of the United States Army (Korea) and was a member of the DAV. He was a member of Big Meadows Baptist Church where he was a former deacon for over 25 years. He was survived by his wife of 53 years, Georgie Lee Vance Prather (married on January 30, 1954); daughter, Janet Denise Parker, daughter, Ella "Nikki" Nichole and her husband, Freddie Carpenter; son, Bradley Milton Prater and his wife, Janice; brother, William Leo Prather and his wife, Wanda; grandchildren, Charity Michelle Moses and her husband, Scottie, Alisha Dawn Prather, Felece Danielle Prather, Chelsea Renee Carpenter; great-grandson, Nicholas Scott Moses; and an extended family of relatives and friends. His funeral was held August 9, 2007, at Big Meadows Baptist Church with The Revs. Joshua Calvert, Bill McGuire and Harry Lee Turbyfill officiating. He was retired from Great Lakes Carbon in Morganton, NC.
