Notes:

Lawson G Smith and James L Bowers, both from Fish Springs, were brothers-in-law and best friends. They were both shot to death during an argument at a pie supper on March 15, 1913. The argument was over "outsiders" from Siam who some of the local girls had invited to the supper. That didn't set well with Lawson and Jim, and at some point in the evening, "Bowers and Smith finished their supper, left their seats and walked hurriedly" toward the boys from Siam, where the two "attacked the boys viciously." The outsiders pulled out their concealed pistols and shot Jim and Lawson. "Bowers was shot at such close range that the front of his double-breasted blue serge suit was set on fire. . . . A few seconds later, Lawson Smith fell heavily as the well-aimed bullets riddled his body" (pg. 17). Timbs writes that not too long before their tragic deaths, they had been warned by an elderly resident to "'settle down and stop all this trouble making.'" Jim Bowers' reply: "'I'll never settle down. I want to die with my boot on'" (17).

Jim Bowers and his best friend, Lawson Smith, were buried side by side in a single grave, originally at the old Fish Springs Cemetery (aka Smith Cemetery). Their remains were reinterred at Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery near Hampton due to the TVA Watauga project. Their epitaph reads: "Let our Father's will be done."

This story is taken from Mountain Memories: Stories of Old Fish Springs, Tennessee, by Lawrence C. Timbs, 1968 (self-published). Lawrence Timbs admits that many versions of this story have been reported; however, he selected this version, he says, from an eye witness, "which in my opinion comes closer to factual information than all the others."

HAMPTON - Lillian Maurine Smith Cutlip,101, Hampton, passed away Wednesday, March 29, 2017 in the Hermitage Health Center. A native of Carter County, (Fish Springs Community) she was a daughter of the late Frank & Sallie Main Smith. Mrs. Cutlip attended Watauga Academy, Butler. She was employed as a LPN at the former Carter County Memorial Hospital for several years. She was a member of the Daughters of The American Revolution, a member of the Hampton Eastern Star and a member of Rittertown Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Frank Edward Cutlip, December 20, 2000, by two daughters: Ranell Orfield and Shonette Tolley , three brothers: Brown, Bud & W.K. Smith and three sisters: Jean Morris, Letta Walker and Virginia Greene and One Great Granddaughter.

Survivors include one Son & daughter-in-law: Charles & JoAnn Cutlip, Mountain City. One Sister: Doris Troutman, Hampton. Two Sons-In-Law: Gene Orfield and Herman Tolley. Her Grandchildren: Kim Hampton and husband Donnie, Gary Orfield, Keith, Patty and Leon Tolley and wife Rebecca. Her Great Grandchildren: Logan Hampton, Tracy Guy & husband Jeff, Jackie, Shelby and Conner Orfield. Her Great Great Grandchildren: Lane & Timber Shaw, R.J., Mitchell and Ezra Tolley, Jeffery, River & Rudy Guy. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, March 31, 2017 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Stout and Dr. Mike McNutt officiating. Interment will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Music will be provided by Joe Simcox. Doris Troutman, 88, of Hampton, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, December 10, 2018, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. Doris was born in Carter County to the late Frank and Sallie Main Smith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 60 years, Guy Troutman, and several brothers and sisters.
Doris was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church where she was the choir director for over 30 years. Doris was a member of Eastern Star and enjoyed genealogy and loved singing praises to the Lord.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Anthony Troutman and wife Debbie of Hampton; two granddaughters, Allison and Cyndie and her husband Travis; and five great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Doris Troutman will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, December 13, at Rittertown Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Stout officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 3:30 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow in the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery. Sadie M. Smith, 97, went to be with the Lord on February 24, 2019, at her home in the Fish Springs Community.
Sadie was a retired veteran of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps, United States Army, and the United States Army Reserve, serving from 1942 until retirement in 1975. She held positions including mechanic/wheeled driver, nurse, clerk typist and many more. She also worked at Bemberg Corporation, General Electric Corporation in New York and attended Dourghes Technical School in Dallas, Texas.
After retirement, she became a farmer and caregiver to her elderly parents. She loved to fish, care for her animals and in later years enjoyed watching TBN, and talking to friends and family on the telephone.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, Raud and Nellie Smith, and by four sisters and one niece.
She is survived by one sister, June McEwen of Johnson City; many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews; and her loyal dachshund Daisy, who was her constant companion.
Sadie was cared for by her great-niece, Emily Fletcher, and great-nephew, Christopher Schuettler and his family.
An indoor military service by the Carter County Honor Guard will be held at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton, Tenn., at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 17.

Clara Jeanette Hartley White, age 92, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, February 1, 2014 at the Watauga Medical Center. She was born May 12, 1921 in Carter County to the late John A. Hartley and Ruth Ellen Smith Hartley. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Clark B. White; sister, Charlotte R. Hartley; and a brother, Sherman Hartley.

Clara was a graduate of Hampton High School. She and her husband, Clark, moved to Johnson County when construction of Watauga Dam began. Clara worked in special education for several years for the Johnson County School System. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Clara is survived by her daughters, Nancy White Tolliver and husband Kenneth of Mountain City, Jeanetta White Webster and husband Michael of Oklahoma City, OK and Linda White Green and husband Clifford of Morristown, TN; grandchildren, Ken Tolliver, Julie Tolliver, Anna Sams, Carol Poore, Sarah Green and Rebecca Yager; great grandchildren, Tyler Antrican, Sheldon Brooks and Nate Sams; and several nieces and nephews.

The family received friends from 6:00 until 7:00 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2014 at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service following at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Dean Smith officiating. Pallbearers were sons-in-law and grandsons, Kenneth Tolliver, Ken Tolliver, Clifford Green, Michael Webster, Sheldon Brooks, Tyler Antrican, Nate Sams and Wally Isham. The graveside service and interment were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2014 from the Rittertown Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton, Tennessee.

Betty was born in Fish Springs, TN and resided most of her life in Elizabethton, TN

Betty was a longtime employee of Baxter Pharmaceutical. She loved to travel and tend to her flower gardens.
She was the daughter of the daughter of the late Stanley F. White and Mary Stout White.
In addition to her parents, Betty is preceded death by brothers: David White, Spencer White and Lonnie White and sister: Lorene Hudson Taylor.
Left to cherish her memory include: her son, Johnny N. Smith and wife Fredna; brother, Jerry White and wife Jean; sisters: Helen Barnett and husband James and Peggy Chambers; and several nieces and nephews.
Betty was much loved by family, friends and neighbors.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Stanley F. and Mary R. Stout White.
Peggy was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was a homemaker, loving mother, and granny to so many others outside her family.
Peggy was a member of Union Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Van Chambers; two sisters, Betty Smith and Lorene Hudson; and three brothers, David, Spencer and Lonnie White.
Survivors include her daughter, Julie Williams-Gabel, and son-in-law, John, Elizabethton; a grandson, Jonah Gabel; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Jim Barnett, Jonesborough; a brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Jean White, Elizabethton; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and a special friend, Jeanette Williams.
A service to celebrate the life of Peggy Chambers will be conducted at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at Union Baptist Church with the Rev. Wesley Duncan officiating. June D. Proffitt, age 89, passed away on Thursday, July 20, 2023 at the Johnson City Medical Center. June was born March 30, 1934 to the late Hubert D. and Jessie White. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Johnny Proffitt; grandchild, Shannon Proffitt; brothers, Billy Joe White and Buddy Roger White; and nephew, Billy Jack White.

June worked for 20 years as a cook at the Johnson County High School and 13 years in dietary at Mountain City Care Center. She liked to sew and enjoyed watching hummingbirds. June was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Zola Mae Snyder, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, was the daughter of the late Roy McKinley White and Ada Dove Phillips White. In addition to her parents, Zola was preceded in death by her husband Watson Decatur 'Doc' Snyder; a son, Scotty Lane Snyder; one sister, Wanetta White and two brothers: Willard 'Widd' White and Frank White.

Zola was a retired from teaching following 44 years of service. She was an avid reader and enjoyed the outdoors and working in her flower gardens. Zola was a member of First Baptist Church.

Zola is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law: Joe Pat and Judy Snyder and Michael Lynn Snyder; grandchildren: Daniel Snyder and wife Rebecca and Shane Snyder and wife Angel; great grandchildren: Shianti, Scotty and Bryce; special caregivers: Venia Stout, Debbie Greene, Marie Mahala, Carolyn Adams and Mary Ward, and several nieces and nephews.

Frances Nell White Treadway, Elizabethton passed away peacefully Thursday, March 26, 2015 at her residence.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late O.F. & Lone White.
Nell was a 1938 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She was a homemaker and owner of O.F. White Store. Nell & her late husband were lifelong farmers and operated the store for a number of years. She loved to work in her flowers. Nell was a member of the Siam Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Eston B. Treadway, who died September 7, 2014.
Survivors are a special Cousin, Robert White and a special niece, Joyce Treadway both of Elizabethton.
Graveside Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 29, 2015 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Eric Wright officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from friends and neighbors in attendance. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the 1938 graduating class of Elizabethton High School.

Mr. Robert Tipton Nave, age 87, of Johnson City, TN, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2015, in the Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, TN, he was the son of the late Elbert Vance Nave and Margaret Barnes Nave.

Mr. Nave received his BS Degree from East Tennessee State University and received Master's Degrees from the University of Tennessee and U.C.L.A. He was a retired school teacher having taught in Carter County, Florida and California and he was a member of the Watauga Historical Association and enjoyed genealogy. Mr. Nave was a U.S. veteran, having served in both Air Force and the Army.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepmother, Mary Allen Nave; a niece, Shirley Anne Wandell; and a niece-in-law, Sandra Whitehead Wandell.

Survivors include his sister, Anne N. Hensley and husband, Woodward, Elizabethton; two nephews, James Vance Wandell and wife, Angela, Elizabethton, and Robert Frank Wandell, Knoxville, TN; a great-niece, Sarah Michelle; and a great-nephew, Michael Wandell and wife, Amanda. Many cousins and many friends also survive.

Anne N. Hensley, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Monday, November 12, 2018, in Elizabethton. She was born August 24, 1928, the daughter of the late Elbert Vance Nave and Anna Margaret Barnes Nave.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley A. Wandell; her step-mother, Mary A. Nave; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Wandell; and a brother, Robert T. Nave.
Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Woodward T. Hensley; two sons, Robert F. Wandell and James V. Wandell and wife Angela; two grandchildren, Michael V. Wandell and Sarah M. Rice; and three great-grandchildren, Trevor Rice, Blakely Wandell and Maximus Wandell.
A private graveside service to honor the life of Anne N. Hensley will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday, November 16, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery with Mr. Charles Hensley officiating.

Shirley Jo White Hicks, 86, of Hampton, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Ray and Hazel Smith White.
Shirley was a graduate of Hampton High School. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and she loved her church family very much.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda Anne Lindsey; a sister, Sue White McQueen; and a brother, Tom White.
Survivors include her husband, Bob Hicks; a granddaughter, Cherity Swift Bennett; a great-grandson, Ethan Bennett; her sisters, Earlene Theilacker and husband George and Sallie Deloach, all of San Diego, Calif., and Jane Ishem and husband Wally, Hampton; her sister-in-law, Nancy Laws White, Hampton; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Thomas White; and a special friend, Kenneth Rainbolt.
Graveside services for Shirley Jo White Hicks will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 13, in the White Family Cemetery with Mr. Buddy Street officiating. Interment will follow the service. Miles Edgar McCloud, 91, Elizabethton, passed away Monday, November 15, 2021, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born September 13, 1930 to the late Walter P. and Lillie Oliveen McQueen McCloud. He had lived a number of years in Elizabethton.
Miles served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired Millwright.
Miles loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church but attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Ellen Vines and Hannah Lou Blevins; a brother, Tom McCloud; and a sister-in-law, Phyllis Nave.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Joan Fletcher McCloud; a brother, Lanton McCloud, Sumter, S.C.; three sisters, Rachel Phipps, Elizabethton, Linda Jo Hall, Pontiac, Mich., and Anglee White, Gray, Tenn.; a special nephew, Keith Grindstaff; and several other nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, November 18, in the Mountain Home National Cemetery (New Annex – 215 Heroes Drive, Mountain Home) with the Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating. Military Honors will be provided by the Veterans Honor Guard DAV 39, Bluff City. Nathaniel “Tom” McCloud, 88, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2020 in the James H. Quillen Va. Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Walter P. & Lillie Oliveen McQueen McCloud. Tom served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict where he was an Ex Pow for 33 months. He was a retired Manager of the Pizza Inn, Johnson City. Tom was affectionately known as the “fruit cake man”. He has dedicated the latter part of his life to baking and selling fruit cakes as a way to raise money for the building project of Unaka Baptist Church where he was a member and Ordained Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years: Billie Jean Shankles McCloud, who passed away January 28, 2005, by two sisters: Mary Ellen Vines and Hanna Lou Blevins and several sisters & brothers-in-laws; and his special friend Joe Williams.
Survivors include his Sons & Daughters-in-Law; Mike & Sabrina McCloud and Donald & Bonnie McCloud all of Elizabethton. HAMPTON - Shonette Mardell Tolley, age 81, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Sunday July 24, 2016. She was born January 19, 1935 in Akron, Ohio to Frank & Lillian Cutlip.

Shonette was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from the United States Postal Service. She was an active member of Rittertown Baptist Church where she had served as Minister of Music for many years.

Mrs. Tolley was preceded in death by her father, Frank Cutlip; her sister Rannell Orefield and her granddaughter, Amber Shaw Calhoun.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Herman Tolley; her mother, Lillian Cutlip; sons, Keith and Leon (Rebecca) and daughter, Patty; granddaughters, Tracy Guy (Jeff) and Tammy Jordan; grandsons, Mitchell, R.J. and Ezra; great-grandchildren, Lane and Timber Shaw, Jeffrey, River and Rudy Guy, brother, Charles Cut lip (JoAnn); and special friends, Garry Smith and Shrill Davis and Simon.

On Saturday, September 15, 2018, Johnny Karl Ramsey Sr., loving husband, father and grandfather, of Hampton, passed away unexpectedly at the age of 73.
Johnny was born on March 13, 1945 in Elizabethton, Tenn., to Rhudy and Kathleen Ramsey. He was a graduate of Hampton High School, Class of 1963. After high school, he served in the National Guard until 1969. He worked as a mechanic and service manager for Bunton Chevrolet for over 25 years. He owned his own business, John's Auto Clinic, for several years, before retiring for health reasons. In September 1969, he married Linda I. Lewis, and they raised one son, Johnny Karl Ramsey Jr.
Johnny had a passion for gun collecting, fast cars and Harley-Davidsons. He loved being outdoors and spending time with his grandchildren. He also loved driving his "Rambo" truck. He attended Union Baptist Church.
Johnny was preceded in death by his father, Rhudy; his mother, Kathleen; and his wife, Linda. Also, by his brothers, Rhudy H. Ramsey "Snooks", Hopewell Va., Frank E. Ramsey, Hampton, and Harry L Ramsey "Bobby", Elizabethton; and his nephew, Jerry L. Ramsey Sr.
He is survived by his son, Johnny K. Ramsey Jr. and wife Christa; his sister, Dottie Higgins; and his grandchildren, Leighton ("Kitten"), John-Evan ("JohnBoy"), Devin, Landon, Lyndie and Conner Ramsey. He is also survived by nephews, Jeffrey D. Ramsey and Richard H. Ramsey, and nieces, Lisa Odom and Karen VanDyke.
Special friends he loved: Linda Guy, "Frog Greenwell", "Speck" Smith, Gary Shingleton, Earl Campbell, and Gary Trivette (deceased).
The graveside service will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, September 22, in the Lakeview Cemetery, Butler, with Mr. Mike Fritts officiating. Burial will follow the service. ELIZABETHTON - Max "Scrap" Wilburn White, age 81, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 6, 2019 at the Hillview Health Center.

Max was born in the Fish Springs Community of Butler, Tennessee to the late Willard and Wilma Lewis White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Lynn White; and a brother, Robert "Bobby" White.

Max had been employed at North American Rayon Corporation as a supervisor and was a member of Hunter First Baptist Church. He was a United States Air Force veteran and was an avid golfer.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Brenda Keller White, of the home; four children, Kathy Timmons, of Elizabethton, Brian White, of Hampton, Gregory White and wife Carol, of Colorado and Kristie Noe and husband Scott, of Gray; two step children, Johnny Proffitte and girlfriend Sherry and Kimberly Proffitte Hyder and husband Curtis, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Susan Townsend, of Tampa, FL; six grandchildren, Summer Halpern, of Naples, FL, Tyler Noe, of Gray, Jacob Noe, also of Gray, Jon Christian White, of Johnson City, Emily Covarrubias and husband Frankie, of Colorado and Austin Hyder, of Elizabethton; three great grandchildren, RJ Halpern, of Florida, Seth Sneckenberg, of Florida and Arya Covarrubias, of Colorado; and his sister-in-law, Penny White, of Elizabethton. A service to honor the life of Max "Scrap" Wilburn White will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, October 10, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton. Music will be provided by Mr. Brian Keener. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 11, 2019 in the Mountain Home National Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. ELIZABETHTON - Robert L. "Bob" White, age 78, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 14, 2018 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Bob was born in Carter County to the late Willard and Wilma Lewis White. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Bobbi Rena White Tittle.

Bob was a loving husband and father. He was an active member of Doe River Baptist Church, where he founded the Christian Life Center. Bob retired from the Internal Revenue Service after 32 years of service. Upon his retirement he owned and operated his own tax practice, Robert L. White and Associates for 20 years. He was a member of the Carter County Humane Society, where he served as treasurer for over 25 years. In his leisure time he enjoyed golfing and watching UT sports.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 40 years, Penny Tester White, of the home; daughter, Candice Lynn Sieiro and husband Anthony, of Columbia, SC; son, Michael Ott White, of Nashville, TN; his grandchildren, Walt Tittle, III and wife Brooke, of Jonesborough, TN and Lindsay Franks and husband Taylor, also of Jonesborough, TN; one great grandson, Walt Tittle, IV; brother, Max White and wife Brenda, of Elizabethton, TN; sister, Susan Townsend, of Tampa, FL. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Robert L. "Bob" White will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, August 17, 2018 at Doe River Baptist Church of Elizabethton with Rev. Daniel Fink and Rev. Jim Hawk, officiating. Music will be provided by Charlotte Crumley. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 18, 2018 in the Lakeview Cemetery in Butler, TN. Active pallbearers will be the men of Doe River Baptist Church. Lynn Snyder, age 72 of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on October 9, 2017, at his home. He was born on April 22, 1945, to the late Watson Decauter 'Doc' Snyder and Zola Mae White Snyder. In addition to his parents, Lynn was preceded in death by a brother, Scotty Snyder.

Lynn was a Vietnam War Veteran having served in the Army as Combat Medic.

Lynn loved living in the mountains and farming. He was a very loving and caring man. He was also a very giving and generous man who would give you the shirt off his back. His family was very important to him and his granddaughter, Shianti, was the light of his life.

He was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and had also attended Roan Creek Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish his memories include his son and daughter-in-law, Shane and Angel Snyder; brother and sister-in-law, Joe Pat and Judy Snyder; grandchildren: Shianti Snyder and Cassie Scalf; nephew, Danny Snyder; great nephew, Scotty Snyder and several other family members.

The family will receive friends from 1-2:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at the Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor David Hankal officiating. Graveside service and interment with military honors conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard will follow at the Sunset Memorial Park.
