ELIZABETHTON — Mrs. Kathleen Ritchie Bowers, 97, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, November 30, 2010, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

She was born in Carter County and was the daughter of the late David E. and Belle Murray Ritchie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. Bowers, on July 28, 2006; four brothers, Ralph Ritchie, Roscoe Ritchie, Ted Ritchie, Elbert Ritchie; and three sisters, Pauline Ritchie, Helen Kate Payne and Lucille Ritchie.

Mrs. Bowers was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and a member of the Fellowship Sunday School Class. She held offices, served the church and the community in other capacities, and was a faithful member of many organizations including the Elizabethton Women's Club, FCE (Home Demonstration Club) and the Carter County Republican Women's Club.

She was retired from the Head Start Program of the Carter County School System.

She is survived by a daughter, Carla Bowers Cox and her husband, Bob, of Knoxville, TN; a granddaughter, Tiffany Gardner and her husband, Scott, Knoxville, TN; two great-grandchildren, Madison Gardner and Johnathon Gardner, both of Knoxville, TN; a brother Sam Q. Ritchie and his wife, Ruth, of Elizabethton; and a sister, Emma Jean Roddy, also of Elizabethton.

The service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Bowers will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Saturday, December 4, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton, with members of her family joining together to celebrate her life. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds, organist.

The family will greet those in attendance in the parlor of the church following the memorial service. The family will also welcome visitors from 2:00-4:00 PM on Friday, December 3, 2010, in the Fireside Room of Tetrick Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 4, 2010, in the Pearl Bowers Cemetery, Blue Springs Community. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Mann, Richard Grindstaff, Jim Sharp, Richard Hardin, Dude LaPorte, Dr. Joseph May, Dr. Floyd Earl May, Dr. David May and Dr. Stephen May.

ELIZABETHTON - Sam Q. Ritchie, age 91, of Elizabethton, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, Tennessee.

Sam was born in Carter County on September 30, 1926 to the late D.E. Ritchie and Belle Murray Ritchie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings.

Sam graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1945 and then attended Steed College. He was a United States Army veteran, having served in World War II.

Sam received his pilot's license at the age of 58 and was the former owner and operator of Sam Q's Restaurant in Elizabethton. He had also worked with his brother at Ritchie's Furniture.

Sam was a member of First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton, was a former member of the Carter County School Board, a former member of the Carter County Election Commission, a former member of the Jaycees and loved football and flying.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 69 years, Ruth Bryson Ritchie, of the home; his son, Sam Q. Ritchie, II, of Elizabethton; and his grandson, Nikolas Ritchie and wife Savannah, of Chicago, Illinois. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including two special nieces, Carla Cox and Margo Bentley.

A service to celebrate the life of Sam Q. Ritchie will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Friday, October 27, 2017 at First United Methodist Church of Elizabethton with Reverend Raymond Amos, Sr., officiating. Music will be under the direction of the First United Methodist Church Choir, Tyler Fleming and David Arney. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the church, prior to the service on Friday; or at his residence at other times.

The graveside service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, October 28, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be the men of First United Methodist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be Ken Mann, Norman Simerly, Jeff Kyte, and Jim Hyder.

Josephine Ritchie Williams, age 94, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in the Pine Ridge Care Center, following an extended illness. Josephine was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Barnal Allen and Mary Ettie Nichols Ritchie. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence C. Williams; an infant brother; three sisters, Ethel Robinson, Beulah Smith and Anna Lee Lewis; and a special grandson by marriage, Billy Wayne Hilton.

Mrs. Williams was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed gardening and flowers.

Survivors include three sons, Ed Williams and wife Charlotte, Darrell Williams and wife Barbara, and Harold Williams, all of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Kathy Hilton and her friend, George Shoun, Ann Andrews and husband James, and Darrell Wayne Williams and wife Donna, all of Elizabethton; four great grandchildren, Jeffery “Skeeter” Bowers, Billy “Peanut” Hilton, Kelly JoMae Hilton, and Jamie Andrews. COLUMBIA - Georgia Mae Ritchie Hyder, of Columbia, died on Monday, August 23, 2021. Born November 11, 1929, in Elizabethton TN, she was a daughter of the late Andrew “Andy” and Cordia Nidiffer Ritchie. Ms. Georgia graduated from Unaka High School and Steed college. She went on to work at Bemberg Industrial where she met her future husband, Clyde Hyder. They married on June 9, 1951 and as a military family, they lived in Fort Drum, NY, Fort Sill, OK, Schofield Barracks/Fort Shaffer, Honolulu, HI, Fort Sam, San Antonio, TX and Fort Jackson, Columbia, SC. After decorated service in Korea and Vietnam, and achieving rank of Command Sergeant Major, Clyde passed away in July 1994.

A member of Kilbourne Park Baptist Church, Ms. Georgia retired from Fort Jackson on February 3, 1995, where she worked in civil service. On January 2, 1967, she was initiated and became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Fort Jackson Chapter 253, where she held many positions and at one time served as Worthy Matron.

Ms. Georgia was a lifelong sports fan who watched her nephew play basketball at University of Tennessee, to never missing her son‘s basketball or baseball games from the age of seven years old through high school. As an avid Gamecock fan, later in life she attended many football games with her friend/companion Jack Beamon. She and Jack enjoyed many evenings dancing at the senior center and traveling the south together. She loved watching all sports, especially women’s and men’s basketball and her beloved South Carolina Gamecocks. She also enjoyed attending Atlanta Braves games and after Jack’s passing, she never missed a Braves game on TV.

Aside from sports, she loved spending time with her family. She always looked forward to the many Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners at Joni‘s or Tracy‘s house that also included watching sports under warm blankets by the fire.

Survivors include two children, Jill Long (LeMont) and Brett Hyder (Joni) all of Columbia, South Carolina; two granddaughters, Sheryl Long and Renee Coe (Keith); six great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, sister, Anna Ruth Cole; brother, Lawrence Ritchie; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

A service for Mrs. Hyder will be held 2 o'clock, Saturday, August 28, 2021, at Memorial Funeral Home, 212 N. Main St., Elizabethton, TN, with Mr. Scott Fisher, Minister officiating.. Burial will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

UNICOI - George A. Ritchie, age 84, Unicoi, passed away Tuesday, April 27, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a son of the late John K. and Hattie Love Ritchie.

George was born and raised in Stoney Creek but had lived in Unicoi most of his life. He was a 1955 graduate of Unaka High School where he played basketball and was known as Mr. Unaka or Hopper. He also attended Milligan College where he was the high jump champion. George was in US Army Reserves attending boot camp in Fort Jackson, SC.

George retired from Flav-O-Rich Dairy after thirty years of service. He was a member of the Unicoi Masonic Lodge # 681, Unicoi Shrine Club, Unicoi Ruritan Club, Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society, and served as the election commissioner in Unicoi for many years. He enjoyed watching his grandsons play ball and was known to many as “Daddy George”.

George was a faithful member of Unicoi United Methodist Church where he belonged to the New Beginnings Sunday School Class and sang in the choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers: Bill, Gebe, and Gene Ritchie; two sisters: Mary Lou Scott and Linda Littleton.

George leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving wife of fifty-seven years, Nancy Seward Ritchie; two daughters: Ronda Simpson and husband, Rob, Sharon Slagle and husband, Donnie; three grandchildren: Connor Simpson, Clay Simpson, Lucas Slagle; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law: Randall and Gail Seward, Joann Ritchie; many special nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.

Ernest "Gebe" Ritchie, 74, of 1543 Highway 91, Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, October 11, 2013 at his residence following an extended illness.
He was a son of the late John and Hattie Love Ritchie and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bill Ritchie and Gene Ritchie; two sisters, Mary Lou Scott and Linda Littleton.
Mr. Ritchie was a member of Stoney Creek Baptist Church and attended New Liberty Free Will Baptist Church. He retired from Summers-Taylor as a truck driver and had previously driven for Mason Dixon, ETW&C, and Beaunit. He was also a former bus driver with the Carter County School System.
For forty years, he was known as one of the best auctioneers in the area, having graduated from the Mendenhall School of Auctioneering, High Point, NC, in November 1969.
Mr. Ritchie was a United States Army veteran, having proudly served during the Vietnam Era. He spent many years with the Carter County Honor Guard and was a member of the American Legion Post #49, a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Ritchie was a lifetime member of the Carter County Rescue Squad and served fourteen years on the Carter County Board of Education and was presently serving on the Carter County Commission at the time of his death.
Mr. Ritchie is survived by his wife of twenty-five years, Lynice Williams Ritchie, of the home; one son, Doug Stevens and wife, Carrie, Elizabethton; two daughters, Wendy Sams and husband, Wayne, Elizabethton, Jenny Lockett and husband, Jerry, Water Park Fla.; three grandchildren, Josh Sams and wife, Brooke, Laikyn Stevens and J. Allen Lockett; one great-granddaughter, Emma Nichole Sams; one brother, George Ritchie and wife, Nancy.
The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Rev. Eric Heaton officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Kenny Greer and Mr. Dennis Laws.
The family will receive friends from 5:30-8:00 PM prior to the funeral service in the chapel or at the residence at other times.
The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Monday, October 14th at the Ritchie Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard. Mrs. Nellie J. Lewis, age 93, of Peters Hollow Road in Elizabethton went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, March 25, 2022 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. Nellie was born May 5, 1928 in Elizabethton to the late Charles and Mary Blanche Ritchie White. In addition to her parents, Nellie was also preceded in death by her husband, Campbell H. (Herman) Lewis; and four brothers, Arlie White, Stewart White, Hubert White and Jerry White.
Nellie was a homemaker and loved taking care of her home and her family. She was a graduate of Unaka High School and was a member of Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. Nellie will be missed by all that knew her.

WATAUGA - Mildred Mottern Young, age 97, 181 Cripple Creek Loop, Watauga, Tennessee, died Friday, July 1, 2022 and is now in her heavenly home, celebrating with family and friends. When her size 4 ½ feet hit the ground, they didn’t stop until they went to bed. With a smile and grace, she always gave more in life than she received.

Born April 8, 1925, was a 1943 graduate of Happy Valley High School and later business school. She worked as a bookkeeper until she retired from Thomas Industries/ Easy Painter in 1990. Church was always a big part of her life and she was a member of Brick Christian Church. She grew up in the big band era and loved music, especially when it was Elvis Presley singing.

Preceded in death by her parents David Ritchie Hyder and Sybil Range Hyder, husbands George F. Mottern and John J. Young, an infant son George Patrick Mottern and son Tim Mottern, an infant great-grandson Preston Davis, her sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Monk Tillman.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Nat Edens "Ed" Hyder, Jr. M.D., 86, Johnson City, passed away Thursday, October 15, 2015 at Pine Ridge Care & Rehab Center. Dr. Hyder was born in Hampton on March 14, 1929. He started high school at Hampton High School and graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1946. He attended Milligan College before joining the Army in June of 1947 after serving as a clerk and medic in the army he enrolled at East Tennessee State College to earn a B.S. degree in Chemistry. He also certified to teach at that time. He went on to attend and graduate from University of Tennessee College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in June of 1954.

Dr. Hyder practiced medicine until 2009. He served in Knoxville, TN, Tazewell, VA, Lallie Kemp Charity Hospital in Louisiana, worked in Medical Management of Radiation Accidents at Oak Ridge, also practicing in Chatom, AL, Erwin, TN, Johnson City, TN and with Rural Health Consortium at the Bluff City Clinic and his last several years at the Dry Creek Clinic in Erwin, TN.

During his career Dr. Hyder also served several communities, the State of Tennessee and his nation in many capacities. He was a longtime Railroad Physician with CSX. He served as a Nuclear Medical Consultant and Plant Physician at Nuclear Fuel Services at various times from 1970 until 1992.

He has served as president of the Erwin Civitan Club, the Erwin Community Chest and United Way, as Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Erwin YMCA. He is a member of Mountain View Baptist Church and has also served as Deacon of the First Baptist Church of Chatom, AL; First Christian Church in Erwin and the First Baptist Church in Erwin

In 1968 Dr. Hyder volunteered through a program with the American Medical Association to go to Vietnam as a civilian doctor treating Vietnamese civilians alongside Vietnamese nurses. There he performed many surgeries as he also treated the wounded. It was also a common occurrence that at night he would have to leave his quarters and go to the bunkers because of mortar attacks.

Dr. Hyder has served in many other capacities. In 1971 he was appointed by the Governor to the Tennessee Public Health Council, serving as secretary in 1976 and 1977. He was president of the Tennessee Academy of Family Physicians in 1972. In 1974 he was named Family Physician of the Year for the state of Tennessee. He is a past delegate to the AMA. He served as president of the Tennessee Medical Association in 1983.

Dr. Hyder has also served in various positions with the James H. Quillen College of Medicine through ETSU; he stood as Acting Director of the Johnson City Family Practice Residency Program, a member of the Dean's Council and Admissions Committee, Associate Professor in the Department of Family Practice and assistant Dean and Director of Medical Education at the Johnson City Medical Center.

In addition to his community support Dr. Hyder has served his country through the military in several capacities. In 1975 he joined the Medical Corps in the United States Army Reserve. He was promoted to Colonel in 1978. He became Commander of the 912th Combat Support Hospital in 1982. In 1985 he became the Commander of the 332nd Medical Brigade, leading over 150 Army Reserve Units in the USA. Before retiring he served as commander over 377th Combat Support Hospital and then transferred to 662 Medical Detachment of the National Guard. Though he retired from the National Guard in 1995 he later joined the National Defense Force Service Command, a part of Homeland Security. Here he has served as Brigadier General, Major General and Lieutenant General.

In addition to his parents, Dr. Hyder was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth Hurst Hyder; one son, Paul Marshall Hyder; two grandsons, Nason Michael Hopkins and J. Keith Hyder; a daughter-in-law, Teresa Hyder and a sister, June Evelyn Hyder Walsh.

Margie Vandeventer Boling, age 82, formerly of Bluff City went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, November 18, 2014 at the Hermitage Health Center in Elizabethton. She was born in Carter County, TN, a daughter of the late Luther and Victoria Ritchie Vandeventer. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Bruce Boling; a brother Eugene Vandeventer and a sister Mareen Bowman.

Margie was a member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother and liked decorating and writing poems.

Geraldine Bowers Baker, age 88, of Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, Jerri was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Joe C. and Victoria Ellis Bowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 53 years, Frank Baker; her three sisters and brothers-in-law, June and Johnny Luker, Ruth and Ed Alexander, and Jean and Bill Curtis; and just recently a nephew, Crawford Alexander.

Jerri loved to read, paint, travel (having traveled to all 50 states), and sing. She was a 1947 graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended Carson-Newman College, where she met the love of her life, William Frank Baker, Jr. She later graduated from ETSU in 1972 with a degree in education. Upon her graduation, Jerri taught a year in the Carter County School System. Additionally, she taught first grade at Harold McCormack School in Elizabethton for 15 years.

Jerri was a life-long member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir, helped with vacation bible school and taught a children's Sunday school class.

Those left to cherish her memory are her much loved daughter, Sarah: eleven nieces and nephews; their children and grandchildren.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Geraldine Bowers Baker will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Todd Hallman of First Baptist Church, officiating. Music is under the direction of Nancy Earnest. HOBBS, N.M. — James Calvin Ritchie, 90, passed away on Monday, January 30, 2023, in Hobbs. Jim, born in Elizabethton, Tenn., on November 12, 1932, is the second son of Nannie Josephine and Harry Roscoe Ritchie. Following a family move to Kingsport, Tenn., he attended Dobyns-Bennett High School and joined the Navy with training at Great Lakes Naval Base. Upon leaving military duty, he attended East Tennessee State University where he began work with the campus radio station, which marked his lifelong interest in broadcast media and journalism. After relocating to Texas, Jim became the owner/editor of the Celina Record and the Frisco Enterprise and became an avid photographer. He was known for his quirky sense of humor, love of family, and his passionate Christian faith. Jim enjoyed weekly fellowship with his Tuesday morning coffee buddies and Wednesday morning breakfast group. He loved to play board games with friends and solitaire at bedtime. He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Marie Ritchie; his brothers, Ros Ritchie and Kim Ritchie; his sister, Cassandra Forth; and his children, Sheryl Shepherd, Brent Ritchie, Kimberly Ritchie Diaz, Scott Ritchie, Stacey Kluthe, Blaik Ritchie, Chase Galanakis, Kathryn Trammell and Zachary Ritchie. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Bill Petree and Jana Nelson. He was a proud grandparent to 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

James Wayne "Jimmy" Ritchie, 63, of Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, Jimmy was the son of the late Teddy Glen and Selma Bellamy Ritchie.
Although not able to serve in his country's armed forces, Jimmy was a true patriot at heart. He was an honorary member of the P.O.W. and the American Legion Watauga Post #49 where he loved attending meetings with his friends. He was also an avid flag collector. Jimmy was a Vexillogist (the study of flags) and was a member of the North American Vexillological Association. He attended Elizabethton First Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to his parents, Jimmy was preceded in death by a brother, David Ritchie; sisters, Wilma Bennett and Glenita Ritchie; a sister-in-law, Sharon Tolliver Ritchie; brothers-in-law, Ray White and Buddy Bennett; nieces, Heather Ann Ritchie and Amber Lee Ritchie; and nephews, Brian Ritchie and Paul Julian Jr.
He is survived by three brothers, William Glen Ritchie and wife, Joyce, of both Florida and Ohio, Teddy J. Ritchie of Dandridge, Tenn., and Randy E. Ritchie and wife, Nell, of Austin, Texas; three sisters, Patsy Ritchie Depp and husband, Joel, of Louisville, Ky., Barbara Carlock and husband, Bill, of Apison, Tenn., and Linda Ruth White of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law, Jennie Ritchie of Elizabethton; special cousins, Margo Bentley, Marcella Shoun, Larry Gobble and R.L. Harold "Big John" Williams, 70, of Elizabethton, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2016, at Pine Ridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, following a brief illness. He was born in Carter County to the late Clarence C. Williams and Josephine Ritchie Williams.
"Big John" had worked in the furniture industry and was of the Freewill Baptist faith. He enjoyed eating breakfast with his buddies at City Market and Nancy's Kitchen and especially enjoyed going to the Carter County Cruise Ins on Saturdays.

Darrell Williams, 77, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Clarence C. and Josephine Ritchie Williams. Darrell was an Auto Body Detailer. He loved having muscles cars and going to the car show. He was of the Christian Faith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his twin brother, Harold Williams, and a great-nephew, Billy “Peanut” Hilton. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Barbara Forbes Williams; a son and daughter-in-law, Darrell Wayne and Donna Williams; a grandson, Chris Whitehead; his brother and his wife, Clarence E. (Charlotte) Williams; two nieces, Kathy Hilton and Ann (James) Andrews; several great-nieces, nephews and cousins; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Randy and Nadine Forbes; his nephew and niece, Wesley and Megan Buckner; and his great-nephew, Caleb. A graveside service for family and friends will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Rev. Carl Grindstaff officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Darrell "Dolly" Egli Spake, 87, of Fallston, N.C., went to her heavenly home Thursday, September 20, 2018, at Carolinas HealthCare System-Cleveland with her loving husband by her side.
Born October 20, 1930, in Elizabethton, Tenn., she was a daughter of the late Howard and Roberta Egli.
She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Bill Spake.
The family will receive friends from 2 until 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fallston Baptist Church. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Fallston Baptist Church with the Rev. David Blanton officiating. The entombment will follow the services in the Rose Hill Memorial Park Mausoleum, Fallston.

Samuel Leon "Buddy" Hardin, age 77, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, March 23, 2014, at the Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.
A lifelong native of Carter County, he was born in Elizabethton, TN, to the late Hobert and Sally (Alford) Hardin.
Sam attended Unaka High School and graduated from East Tennessee State University and The School of Banking of the South (Louisiana State University). He retired from Walters State Community College, Morristown, TN, where he was a supporter of the Walters State Senators.
Sam was an avid golfer and life-long Tennessee Volunteer fan, but above all he loved spending time with his family and supporting the athletic events of his grandchildren. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend loved dearly by his family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Sam was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce "Peggy" (Holly) Hardin; and stepmother, Juanita (Cole) Hardin.
He is survived by two daughters, Tammy Hedge and husband, Bill, of Jupiter, FL, Lori Armstrong and husband, Mike, of Johnson City, TN; three grandchildren, Shannon Hedge, Cody Armstrong (Great Falls, MT) and Caleb Armstrong; sister, Dora Lynn Moneyhun, of Greeneville; several nieces and nephews; and special friend, Cynthia Simmons, Morristown, TN.

ELIZABETHTON - Claudia Nell Ensor, 87, Elizabethton, went to be with Jesus on Tuesday, November 16, 2021 from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Blonnie Blanche Alford. Claudia was born and raised in the Carter community of Stoney Creek. She had retired as office manager for Dr. Douglas Cole, and she dearly loved the practice’s patients, her co-workers, and Dr. Cole and his family. Claudia was one of the few remaining charter members of Unaka Baptist Church, where she was a faithful choir member. She loved to sing, and especially enjoyed attending “singing school” every year, along with her good friend Ann Hardin.
Claudia was a graduate of Unaka High School, where she was a member of the girls’ basketball team.
She was an excellent cook and home decorator and always made the holidays very special for her family.
Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were Claudia’s world. Whether it was driving them to ballgames, school events, or church activities, there was nothing she relished more. Loved ones often joked that Claudia didn’t like to sleep for fear she’d miss out on something “the kids” were doing. She admitted she was the reason a few of them were spoiled.
Claudia lost the love of her life, Ralph Ensor, on March 16, 1983, in a tragic accident. They had married on July 8, 1952, and Claudia always counted those 30 years and 8 months as the best part of her life. Claudia was also preceded in death by her cousin, Geraldine Grindstaff, who she counted as a sister.
Survivors are her three children: Jeff Ensor (wife, Nancy); Jennifer Grindstaff (husband, Gary); and Alan Ensor (wife, Pam). Five grandchildren: J.R. Ensor (wife, Julia); Justin Grindstaff (wife, Rebekah); Madison Bowman (husband, Joe); Andrea Lee (wife, Suzanne); and Adam Ensor. Ten great-grandchildren: Cale Ensor, Olivia Whittaker, Mathias Ensor, Taylor Grindstaff, Jared Grindstaff, Patrick Sexton, Charlie Bowman, Micah Lee, Coraline Lee, and Axton Ensor.
The family would like to express a very special and sincere “thank you” to all the staff of Life Care Center of Elizabethton for the loving care, hugs, and attention she received. You truly spoiled her! Thank you, Unaka Baptist Church family, for remembering Claudia in prayer and with visits and gifts. For the other friends of Claudia’s and the family who took the time to visit; you will never know how much your visits meant to her, and to us. A very sincere thanks to you.
Per Claudia’s wishes a number of years ago, there will be no formal funeral service or visitation. A graveside service will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Ensor Cemetery.

ERWIN - Sharon Kay Ritchie Slagle, age 50, Erwin, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus on Wednesday, January 5, 2022. She was born on December 25, 1971, in Johnson City, Tennessee. Sharon is a daughter of Nancy Seward Ritchie and the late George Arliss Ritchie.
She was a proud member of the Unicoi County Lady Devil’s Basketball Team from 1986 until her graduation in 1990. Sharon earned her BS Degree in Elementary Education and her Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Development from East Tennessee State University. She began her teaching career at Rock Creek Elementary School where she taught first grade for several years. Then, Sharon started teaching Pre-K at the Community Learning Center with Unicoi County School System. Later, Sharon became the Director of Pre-K Program with the Unicoi County School System. She attended Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church for several years.
Sharon coached the Unicoi County Middle School Lady Devil’s Basketball Team. She loved watching her son, the light of her life play football, basketball and baseball for the Unicoi County Blue Devils. Sharon attended all his ballgames as well as her nieces and nephews sporting events. She was a loving and devoted wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt, teacher and friend. Sharon will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who knew her. The impact Sharon’s short life made on others will be remembered forever and live on for generations to come. Heaven gained an angel.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Frank and Florence Seward and her paternal grandparents, John K. and Hattie Love Ritchie; father-in-law, Donnie Slagle.
Sharon leaves behind to cherish many wonderful memories of her, husband of twenty-seven years, Donnie Slagle; her son, Lucas Slagle, of the home; mother, Nancy Seward Ritchie; sister, Ronda Simpson and husband, Rob; mother-in-law, Tonette Jones and husband, Glenn; sister-in-law, Saundra Miller and husband, Dave; Uncle Randall Seward and wife, Gail; Aunt Joann Ritchie; nieces and nephews: Sydney Miller, Shelby Dean Miller, Joshua Miller, Connor Simpson and Clay Simpson; many very special cousins, friends and co-workers also survive.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, January 8, 2022, at Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church. A celebration of Sharon’s life will be held at 2:00 P.M. with Pastor Noah Taylor officiating. Interment will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Connor Simpson, Clay Simpson, Rob Simpson, Joshua Miller, Dave Miller and Josh Seward. Honorary pallbearer will be John English.

Charlene Kane, age 75, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 at her residence, following a brief illness. Mrs. Kane was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Coy Lee Peters and Ammo Peters Shell.

Mrs. Kane was retired from Mapes Piano String Company and was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bob Kane, of the home; a daughter, Paige Rike and husband Robert, Elizabethton; a son, Todd Kane, Elizabethton; one granddaughter, Alexandra "Lexie" Rike, Elizabethton; two sisters, Maxine Haffield, Vero Beach, FL and Jan Roberts and husband Michael, Watauga; a sister-in-law, Helen Kane Wilson and husband Jim, Elizabethton; four nieces, Debbie Foster, Vero Beach, FL, Dr. Sharon Stafford, Boone, NC, Cynthia Stafford, Elizabethton, and Amy Pinkerman, Elizabethton; three nephews, Shane Roberts, Knoxville, TN, Ryan Haffield, Vero Beach, FL, and Scott Stafford, Houston, TX; two special friends, Emma Rose Snodgrass and Billie Woodruff. Several great nieces and great nephews also survive.

A memorial service for Mrs. Kane will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Friday, May 30, 2014 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Ray Amos, officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Friday.

The graveside and inurnment service will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Happy Valley Memorial Park.
