    Mrs. D. G. Ellis died at her home Wednesday night at ten o'clock after short length of illness at the age of 69. Funeral will be held from the home near Kingsburg Thursday afternoon at two o'clock conducted by the Rev. John Shepherd. Interment in the Ellis cemetery.
    Survivors are her husband, D. G. Ellis, two daughters, Mrs. Lillie Carter, Mrs. Ada Carter, and three sons, Fred Ellis, Homer Ellis, Dave Ellis.

    Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at Memorial Funeral Chapel.

    Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

    Hildred Ellis Hardin of Cleveland, Tenn., formerly of 111 Broad Street, Elizabethton, Tenn., went to be with her Lord, on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. She was 102 years old. Hildred was born on February 13, 1914 in Carter County, Tenn.
    Hildred was employed until her retirement with North American Rayon Corporation, Elizabethton. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Elizabethton, Tenn. She loved the Arts, antiques, dolls, growing a beautiful flower garden and watching the birds from her kitchen door. She was a wonderful mother and her greatest love was her grandchildren.
    She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred Austin Ellis and Hattie Carroll Ellis; two brothers, infant Glen Ellis and Thomas Edward Ellis; two sisters, Margaret Ragen and Helen Kelly; and her son-in-law, Rev. Justin Nave.
    She is survived by her two children, Richard A. Hardin (Donna) and Barbara Hardin Nave; five grandchildren, Danielle Nave Gentry (Bill), Elisa Nave Peoples (Alvin), Tina Nave Robinson (Rev. Keith), Rev. Brian Nave (Carol), and Wes Nave; four nieces; three nephews; and her great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
    A special thank you to all of the caregivers at Deer Ridge Senior Apartments and especially her nurse, JoAnn and David Zopfi.
    There will be no visitation per her request. A graveside service will be held at Sunset Memorial Garden, (The Cross), Cleveland, on Thursday, September 29, at 2 p.m. Pallbearers will be members of her family.

    A native of Carter County, Mrs. Birchfield was a daughter of the late Dave Powell and Minnie Bullock Ellis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Howard Birchfield, Nov. 9, 1986, by a daughter, Sandra Kay Birchfield, and by a sister, Florence Ellis.
    Mrs. Birchfield was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corp. and most recently had been employed as a hostess at Pizza Inn of Elizabethton. She was a member of the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary.
    Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Bill Kuhn and Peggy and Dr. Jack Holly, all of Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Powell and Gloria Ellis, Randall and Jennifer Birchfield and Kim and Tammy Birchfield, all of Elizabethton; four sisters, Juanita White, Atchison, Kan. Selda Wilson and Ida Andes, both of Elizabethton, and Gladys Nance, Bluff City; 10 grandchildren, Stephanie Bare, Melissa Hodge, David Ellis, Jason Holly, Arden Kuhn, Travis Holly, Ashley Birchfield, Allie Gillenwater, Jordan Birchfield and Lucas Birchfield; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
    Memorial Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

    BIRCHFIELD -- Funeral services for Mrs. Mabel Ellis Birchfield, 77, 403 South Roan Street, Elizabethton, who died Saturday, July 26, 2003, will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday in Memorial Funeral Chapel, with the Revs. Mark Street and Talmadge Brown officiating. Graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, with Mr. Jesse Birchfield, Jr. assisting. The Revs. Mark Street and Clarence Sheffield will provide the music. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, will be Jason Holly, Arden Kuhn, David Bare, Michael Hodge, Jim Jenkins, Herbert Duvall, Al Welsh, Mike Hubbard, Chris Gillenwater and Ron Stanley. Honorary pallbearers will be her church family, friends and neighbors, employees of Pizza Inn, Elizabethton, the staff of Dr. Jack Holly, DDS, the staff of Randall Birchfield Real Estate & Auction, employees of the water treatment plant, City of Elizabethton, members of the Johnson City Police Department, the staff of the Women's Pavilion, Sycamore Shoals Hospital, Dr. John Green and Dr. Scott Caudle.

    Ida M. Andes, age 76, 363 Pine Hill Rd., Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord Monday, September 18, 2006 at her residence following an extended illness. She was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Dave P. and Minnie Bullock Ellis. Mrs. Andes was a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church and retired employee of Hook's Restaurant. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Andes was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Andes, two sons, Eddie Andes and Mark Andes and one sister, Mabel Birchfield. Survivors are one daughter, Barbara Hunter, one son and daughter-in-law, David and Sherri Andes, all of Elizabethton, one grandson, Charles Andes, one great-granddaughter, Charlsea Andes, both of Johnson City, three sisters, Juanita White, Atchison, KS, Selda Wilson, Elizabethton, Gladys Nance, Bluff City, one step-grand-daughter, Jessica Napier, two step-grand-sons, Jeremy Napier and Mark Napier, all of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The funeral service for Mrs. Andes will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 21 at the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church with Rev. Derl Curry officiating. Music will be under the direction of Harvey Crusenberry and Allison Crusenberry. Interment will follow in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Wednesday, September 20 at Tetrick Funeral Home. Friends may also call at the residence at any time at 363 Pine Hill Rd., Elizabethton. Active pallbearers will be Clarence Perry, Charles Andes, Eddie Stanley, Jeff McGee, John Hughes, Roy Perry, Ron Pierce and Terry Perry.     ELIZABETHTON - Earnest "Ernie" Fortner, 80, Siam Community of Elizabethton passed away Monday, June 3, 2019 in the Four Oaks Health Care Center of Jonesborough.

    He was a son of the late Rhudy and Mamie Estep Fortner. Mr. Fortner was a farmer and a member of the Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports, western movies and all of his friends from John Reed Nursing Home and Four Oaks Health Care Center. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two sisters, Glenda Hall and Irene Shirley; five brothers, David Fortner, Larry Fortner, Jimmy Fortner, Lloyd Fortner and James W. Fortner.

    Survivors include a sister, Fannie Mae Fortner Henshaw Gosnell of Jonesborough; a brother, Bruce Fortner of Lincoln, Nebraska; two special sisters-in-law, Trula B. Fortner, Elizabethton and Alazine Fortner, Scherltz, Texas; also several nieces and nephews.

    Graveside services will be conducted at 3:00 PM Wednesday, June 5, 2019 in the Horseshoe Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Wilbur Dam Road, Elizabethton with Rev. Gene Deaton officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 until 2:00 PM. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    JOHNSON CITY - Glenda Rhea Fortner DeVault Hall, 70, of Johnson City, went to her Heavenly home on Sunday, April 17, 2016 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Glenda was a native of the Siam Community in Elizabethton. She was a daughter of the late Rhudy A. and Mamie Estep Fortner. She was a lifelong member of Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. Glenda was loved by all who met her. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend to so many, proving you don't have to be blood to be family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James H. Hall; son, James Paul DeVault; sister, Irene Shurling; and brothers, David, Larry, Worley, Lloyd, and Jimmy Fortner. Survivors include: five children, Linda Gail Carrera, Teresa Rhea Davis (Steven), Justin Eugene DeVault, Kathy Lee (Don), Joy Thacker, and JD Loveland; 11 grandchildren, Amanda Marie Carrera, Matthew Eugene Carrera, Dakoda Carrera, Michael Bales (Katie), Kristen N. Bales, Amber Ruth DeVault, James Patrick, James Connor DeVault, Brandon Britt, Jacqueline Quillen (Nick), and Russ Thacker; 14 great grandchildren, Mamie Marie, Jacoby Kyle, Jonathon Thomas, Mary Katherine, Nakoda Nevaeh, Waylon James, Logan, Evan, Kayla, Katie, Natalie, Vivian, Maggie, and Lisa; two brothers, Bruce and Earnest Fortner; one sister, Fannie Mae Gosnell; special sister-in-law, Trula Bell Fortner; cherished lifelong friend, Charlene Elliott; and several nieces and nephews. The family of Glenda Hall will receive friends from 4 pm to 6 pm Thursday, April 21, 2016 in the Morris-Baker Dogwood Chapel. The funeral service will follow at 6 pm Thursday. A committal is scheduled for 1:30 pm on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

    A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Smith Fortner.
    Mr. Fortner was retired as a dye setter with American Air Filter. He was a member of the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were gardening, fishing and hunting.
    Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Tammy and Dayton Blevins, Elizabethton; a grandson, Steven Oliver, Elizabethton; two brothers, Jack and Billy Fortner; and several nieces and nephews.
    Graveside services for Dennis Columbus Fortner will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 15, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Loveless officiating. Interment will follow the service. Family and friends will meet at the cemetery at 1:50 p.m. Wednesday.

    Jackie Willard Fortner, 82, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Elbert and Ada Bell Smith Fortner. He was a graduate of Unaka High School where he was a member of the baseball team. Jackie served in the United States Army during the Vietnam era. He was employed at Great Lakes until it closed and retired from Bosch Inc., Johnson City. Jackie was an avid golfer and athlete. He played organized sports most of his life. He made a hole-in-one August 10, 2012 and won a state championship with his teammates in his 50+ basketball league. He loved nature and loafin’ in the mountains. Jackie was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church but attended First Baptist Church of Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Todd Fortner; three brothers, Dennis, Wayne and William Fortner; and two sisters, June Hicks and Jean Webb. Survivors include his son, Keith Fortner, and grandson, Dwayne Fortner. He had a very special friend and companion, Peggy Campbell, whom he loved dearly. He had several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Travis Fortner. He loved his two special little friends, Kennedy and Peyton. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the Old Horseshoe Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Pastor Todd Hallman officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his golfing buddies.

    David was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended ETSU. He was employed at Snap-on Tools. David was a member and Leading Knight of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge #1847. He attended Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. His hobbies were fishing and golf.
    In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Mark and Eddie Andes, and a sister, Barbara Hunter.
    Survivors include his wife, Sherry McGowan Napier; three step-children, Jeremy Napier, Mark (Jessica) Napier and Jessica (Joseph) Carey; 11 grandchildren; his best friend, golfing and fishing buddy, Clarence Perry; and a nephew, Charles Andes.
    Graveside services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Friday, March 27, in the Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Gene Fleanor officiating. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the cemetery at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, will be Jeremy Napier, Joseph Carey, Mark Napier, Kevin Lipford, Clarence Perry and Michael Perry. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Elizabethton Elks Lodge #1847 and employees of Snap-on Tools.
