Brief History: This regiment was also designated as the First Regiment of
East Tennessee Drafter Militia. ....Doherty's brigade participated in the
Battle of Horseshoe Bend (27 March 1814) where they were part of the right
line of attack on the Creek Fortifications. There were casualties in many of
the companies, especially in those of....Loughmiller. The Nashville Clarion
of 10 May 1814 has a complete listing of the dead and wounded from this
climactic battle of the Creek war.
Principal rendezvous point for this regiment was Knoxville.....

BRIEF HISTORY: Andrew Jackson's official report of the Battle of Horseshoe
Bend (27 March 1814) mentions that "a few companies" of Colonel Bunch were
part of the right line of the American forces at this engagement.....Other
men from this regiment remained at Fort Williams prior to Horseshoe Bend to
guard the post - provision returns indicate that there were 283 men from
Bunch's regiment at the fort at the time of the battle.
This regiment was in General George Doherty's Brigade and many of the men
stayed after the enlistment expiration of May 1814 to guard the posts at Fort
Strother and Fort Williams until June/July. The line of march went through
Camp Ross (near present-day Chattanooga), Fort Armstrong, and Fort Jackson.

Brief History: Part of General Nathaniel Taylor's brigade, this unit of
drafter militia (about 900 men) was mustered in at Knoxville and marched to
the vicinity of Mobile via Camp Ross (present-day Chattanooga), Fort Jackson,
Fort Claiborne, and Fort Montgomery. Along the way the men were used as road
builders and wagon guards. Many of them were stationed at Camp Mandeville
(near Mobile) in February 1814, where there was much disease. For example,
the company of Captain Joseph Scott had thirty-one listed sick out of an
aggregate of 104 at the final muster.

MT CARMEL - Franklin Richard "Frank" Ellis, 82 of Mt Carmel, went to be with the Lord on Friday February 17, 2017. He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. He was a retired truck driver.

Frank is survived by his wife of 61 years, Eleanor Snapp Ellis; daughters, Sandy Hammond and Pam Hurd (Charles); son, Rick Ellis (Claudette); grandsons, Tracy Ellis (Amiee), Richard Ellis (Jennifer) and Charles Hurd, Jr.; granddaughter, Christie Miller (Jason); great-grandsons, Isaac Ellis, Charles and Matheu Hurd and Eli Miller; great-granddaughters, Lily Ellis and Taylor Ellis.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, February 21, 2017 at Wills Cemetery in Mt Carmel. Those wishing to attend are asked to meet at the cemetery at 12:55 p.m. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

Frances Ellis Carpenter, age 82, of Kingsport joined her mother on what would have been her mother’s 100th birthday, after a lengthy illness.

She was a member of Ketron Memorial United Methodist Church. She attended Emory and Henry College, where she met her husband, “Jack” and they both graduated together in 1949. As a school crossing guard she became a member of the Kingsport Police Department. She was very active with Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, PTA and Sunday school classes. She was a dress maker, ceramics teacher, enjoyed painting pictures and many other crafts.

Frances was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Howard J. “Jack” Carpenter; her parents, Edgar Eugene and Nina Lee Hackler Ellis; brothers, Raymond Lynn Ellis and Donald Curtis Ellis.

She is survived by her sons, Richard Carpenter of Gatlinburg, TN and Steven Carpenter of the home; daughter, Mary Stokes and husband Bill of Knoxville, TN; grandchildren, Wesley and Daniel Stokes; sister, Maude Smith and husband Homer of Kingsport; brothers, James Ellis and wife Janie of Kingsport and Reverend E. Lee Ellis and wife Evelyn of Kernersville, NC; sisters-in-law, Frances Ellis of Mount Carmel, Bernice Ellis of Mount Carmel, Louise Carpenter of Kingsport and Christine Carpenter of Clintwood, VA. She is further survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and grand-nieces and nephews

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 16, 2010 from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the J. Wayne Hamilton Memorial Chapel of Oak Hill Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow with Reverend E. Lee Ellis officiating.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 1:00 PM in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood, VA.

James Earl Ellis (Jim), age 86, of Kingsport, TN went to heaven Thursday, June 9, with his wife, children, and all his grandchildren at his bedside. He attended Emory & Henry College, and served in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict. He worked at Abernathy-Thomas Engineering Company his entire professional life, from 1951 to present. Jim was a member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. Jim loved to learn, always trying new things. He enjoyed NASCAR racing, and bicycle riding. He was a charter member of the Kingsport bicycle club, and taught his own children and grandchildren, most of his nieces and nephews and many neighborhood children to ride as well.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Doris Sue Ellis; sister, Frances Ellis Carpenter; brothers, Donald Curtis Ellis, and Raymond Lynn Ellis; and parents, Edgar Eugene Ellis and Nina Lee Hackler Ellis.

Jim is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janie Bland Ellis; daughter, Donna Ellis Huff and husband Steve; son, Roger Ellis and wife Michelle; grandchildren, Jason Huff and wife Theresa, Adam Ellis and wife Alicia, Benjamin Ellis and wife Emily, Anna Ellis Buisch and husband Sam, Isaac Ellis and wife Emilea, Jacob Ellis and fiancée Anna McLeod; 8 great-grandchildren, plus two due near his birthday; sister, Maude Ellis Smith; brother, Rev. Edgar Lee Ellis, and many loved extended family members.

He was a lifelong resident of Hawkins County. He served with the United States Army overseas in Frankfurt, Germany. He attended Tri-State College in Agnola, Indiana. Curtis retired from H.T. Spoden Consulting Engineers after 35 years of service. He was a certified Browning Archery Service Technician. Mr. Ellis was a member of the Holston Valley Sportsman Club & the Kingsport Archery Club. Donald was a professional photographer and was an avid outdoorsman & an avid birdwatcher. Mr. Ellis was a former member of Ketron United Methodist Church and became an active & faithful member of Grange Hall United Methodist Church where he taught the Adult Men's Sunday School Class. His family & his church by far was the most important thing in his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar & Nina Hackler Ellis; a brother, Raymond Lynn Ellis; his brothers-in-law, Earl Bland & Jack Howard Carpenter; a sister-in-law, Mary Wolfe.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances Bland Ellis; a son, Ronnie Ellis & his wife, Pam; a daughter, Ronda Lynn Morelock & her husband, Terry (both of Church Hill); his grandchildren, Jarrad Morelock, Regina Grace Ellis McGrady, Brandon Morelock & Cassandra Morelock; his siblings, Frances Carpenter, James Earl Ellis & his wife, Janie, Maude Smith & her husband, Homer (all of Kingsport), Rev. E. Lee Ellis & his wife, Evelyn (Kernersville, NC); sister-in law, Bernice Ellis; his "special granddaughters", Brianna Barrett & Liz Calton along with a host of loving nieces & loving nephews.

The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. on Monday (June 15, 2009) at Carter-Trent Funeral Home of Church Hill or friends may also call anytime at the residence.

A funeral service will be conducted on Tuesday (June 16, 2009) at 1:30 p.m. at Grange Hall United Methodist Church with Rev. Deborah Collins, Rev. E. Lee Ellis & Jarrad Morelock, & a special niece, Janie Elaine officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir, Benjamin Ellis & Anna Ellis.

A military graveside service will be conducted by the Hawkins County Color Guard & the TN Army National Guard following the funeral service at Church Hill Memorial Gardens with family and friends serving as pallbearers. KINGSPORT - Maude Elizabeth (Ellis) Smith entered into eternal rest during the early morning hours of Wednesday (October 18, 2017) surrounded by her loving family.

Maude was born on February 12, 1934 to the late Edgar & Nina Lee (Hackler) Ellis in Hawkins County, TN. Maude attended Church Hill High School and Hiwassee College. She was a former member of Grange Hall United Methodist Church, where she was saved as a young girl. Maude was a current member of Colonial Heights United Methodist Church. She was a wonderful homemaker, loving wife, and Grandmom. Her favorite things in life were her grandchildren, family, friends, hummingbirds, and flowers.

In addition to her parents, Maude was preceded in death by brothers, Donald Curtis Ellis, James Ellis, and Lynn Ellis; sister, Frances (Ellis) Carpenter; and her infant son.

Maude is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Homer Smith, with whom she built a beautiful family with two daughters, Janie (Milt) Corley and Pamela (Charles) Bailey; four grandchildren, Gary (Jenna) Hylton, Craig Lenoir, Jennifer (Garth) Grause, and Rachael Corley; several step-grandchildren; two great-grandsons, Jaxson and Isaiah Hylton; brother, Lee (Evelyn) Ellis; several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

The family will receive friends on Sunday (October 22, 2017) from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow in the chapel of East Lawn Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Ellis and Pastor Robert Burlingham officiating. A private committal service will be held in the Garden of Memories at East Lawn Memorial Park. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Colonel Robert E. Ellis Jr. US Army Retired. 70, of Leesburg, FL passed away Saturday, February 12, 2011 at Cornerstone Hospice House, Tavares,FL. Robert was born in Churchill, TN the son of Robert E.and Ollie(Whiteaker) Ellis Sr. Bob moved to Plantation @ Leesburg in May of 2003 from Hungary. Bob was an Army aviator, serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, the commander of a support battalion for the US portion of the UN mission in the Sinai, a graduate of the Army War College, Carlisle, PA. In his last active duty assignment he was the Director of Logistics for the National Security Agency.

After discharge he served as the Overseas Regional Director in the Balkans for the Kellogg,Brown and Root Co. Bob was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Aberdeen, MD. Survivors include his wife, Ildiko, her two sons, Zsolt and Adam that he loved as his own, a sister Dorothy(Mike) DeLoach, Mechanicsburg, PA, an aunt, Elizabeth Durham, Bristol, VA and several nieces and nephews, Bob was preceded in death by a sister Betty Jo. The family would like to express their thanks for the excellent care given at LRMC, LRMC North(OHME), Lake Harris Health Care Center, and Cornerstone Hospice. Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Ronnie was an Eagle Scout, avid sportsman, guitarist, lifeguard, hiker, an award winning archer and loved being outdoors. He was a current employee at Wal-Mart of Kingsport with 26 years of service, where he had become known for his warm, loving smile and welcoming personality. Most of all Ronnie loved being with his family. He was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and brother; and his loving smile will be greatly missed by all those who love him and his jokes and stories, especially his coffee buddies.

Ronnie has now been reunited with his wife, Pam Ellis; he was also preceded in death by his father, Don Ellis; his paternal grandparents, Edgar and Nina Lee Ellis; maternal grandparents, R.W. and Mary Bland; and special friends, Dr. C. David Hensley and Bill Carmichael.
