    Carl M. Bowers, 92, 577 Highway 91, Elizabethton, died Friday, July 28, 2006, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

    Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late A.B. and Bertha Morrell Bowers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lela May and Brown Grindstaff, and a brother, Earl Bowers.

    Mr. Bowers attended First United Methodist Church. He was a retired flight instructor with Appalachian Flying Service at the Tri-Cities Regional Airport with over 20,000 flight hours and was also an FAA Examiner. He was a veteran of World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He flew in both the European and Asian theatres.

    Survivors include his wife, Kathleen Ritchie Bowers, of the home, a daughter and son-in-law, Carla Bowers Cox and Bob Cox, a granddaughter and spouse, Tiffany and Scott Gardner, and two great-grandchildren, Madison and Johnathon Gardner, all of Knoxville.

    The funeral service for Mr. Bowers will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 31, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with the Rev. Buford Hankins officiating. Music will be under the direction of Scott Reynolds. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 1, at Pearl Bowers Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Tennessee National Guard. Active Military pallbearers will also be provided by the
    Tennessee National Guard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Joseph May, Dr. Floyd Earl May, Dr. Stephen May, Dr. David May, Sam Ritchie, Randy Musick, Kenneth Mann, Kenneth Norton, Lewis Bowers, Ray Townsend, Kenneth Williams, Gary Williams, Earl Grindstaff, Bill McGhee and Jerry Hayes. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, prior to

    Dr. Floyd Earl May, 89, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully with his family by his side, on Saturday, October 15, 2016, at his home. He was the son of the late Roby Dewitt and Leila Bowers May and was born in Johnson County, though he lived most of his life in Carter County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Dr. Joyce May, on
    December 7, 2002 and his second wife, Lou Heaton Davidson May in 2014; three brothers, Dr. Joe May, Roby May, Riley May; two sisters, Violet Dewitt and Rosalie Merritt.

    Dr. May was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WWII. He was a graduate of East Tennessee State University where he received a degree in chemistry and a 1956 graduate of the UT College of Medicine at Memphis. He served his residency in Anesthesiology at the UT Hospital in Knoxville before returning to Elizabethton where he practiced medicine since 1957. He was a former Chief of Staff at Carter County Memorial Hospital and a member of Hunter United Methodist Church. His hobbies included genealogy, farming and spending time with his family.

    Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Dr. Angela May-Cross, and her husband, Franklin, Kingsport; Carol Nidiffer and her husband, Jessie, Elizabethton; two sons, Dr. Grover May, Elizabethton; Dr. David May and his wife, Regina, Elizabethton; twelve grandchildren, Stephanie Maxwell, Hannah Holly, Chelsea Ross, Aaron Somers, Ryan May, Ashley May, Dawson May, Rylee May, Reagan May, Elizabeth May, Nathan May, Andrew May; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Hilda Collins and her husband, Herb, Elizabethton; Bertha Lou Boone, West Jefferson, NC; and Joy Bernshausen, Elizabethton. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

    A service to honor the life of Dr. May will be conducted on Monday, October 17, 2016 at 7:00 PM at the Hunter United Methodist Church with Rev. Estel Williams officiating. Eulogies will be delivered by his family and friends. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday in the church prior to the service.

    The Committal and Entombment service will be conducted on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 10:00 AM in the Mausoleum of Peace, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Rick Martin, Dr. Eugene Galloway, Dr. David Fenner, Dr. Jerry Gastineau, Dr. Robert Walter and Dr. Arnold Hopland. Those wishing to attend are invited to meet the family at the funeral home at 9:15 AM on Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery.

    The family would like to extend a heartfelt and sincere thank you to Dr. Jay Jaishankar, Dr. Jeff Farrow, Dr. Jeff Hopland, Dr. Scott Dulebon and the staff and nurses of Amedysis Hospice for the love, care and support shown to Dr. May and the family during his illness.

    Mrs. Eunice Parlier Bowers of Route 2 Elizabethton has received word from the war department that her husband Pvt. Samuel M. Bowers, was killed in action at Luxembourg December 19.
    He was reported missing one week prior to the death notice. Private Bowers has been in service about eight months and overseas about one week.
    Before entering the service he was employed at the North American Rayon Corporation. He is survived by his wife, and three children, Bobby age four, Wilda, two and one-half, and Samuel M. Junior ten months. His mother, Mrs. Vera Bowers of Route 2 is also listed as a survivor.

    ELIZABETHTON - Earl "Jabo" Grindstaff, age 86, of Elizabethton passed away surrounded by his family and friends on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

    Earl was born in Carter County, Tennessee to the late Thomas R.L. Grindstaff and Eva Brown Bowers Grindstaff. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Junior Grindstaff.

    Earl was a devoted and loving husband, father, papaw, and great papaw. He was the owner and operator of Grindstaff Used Cars for over 52 years and he proudly served his country as a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean War. Earl was a member of Highlands Fellowship and was a volunteer fireman for the Elizabethton/ Carter County Fire Department. He was hardworking and determined and had an abundance of energy. He also enjoyed Nascar, woodworking and in fact he had taught a class in woodworking. Earl also enjoyed hunting and made hunting trips to Wyoming each year.

    Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 56 years, Shirley Sams Grindstaff, of the home; a son, Rob Grindstaff and wife Tara, of Elizabethton; two daughters, Tammy Leonard and husband Barry, of Blackburg, VA and Teri Oaks, of Bristol, TN; three grandchildren, Heather Cook and husband Lafe, of Kingsport and Jeffrey Grindstaff and Jennifer Oaks, both of Elizabethton; one great granddaughter, Piper Cook, of Kingsport; three sisters, Carlene Norton, of Carter County, Geraldine Hutsell, of Florida and Kathleen Grindstaff; and his special friends, Bert Jarrett, Freeman Taylor, Bill Fields and Jeff Williams.

    A service to celebrate and honor the life of Earl "Jabo" Grindstaff will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Sunday, March 3, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Kirk Sams, officiating. Music will be provided by Mikki Hale, soloist. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday.

    The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Bert Jarrett, Bill Fields, Bobby Jones, Jeff Williams and Lafe Cook.
