Bynum McCoury, 86, formerly of U.S. Hwy. 19E, Roan Mountain, died Friday, October 1, 2004, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center, Mountain Home, TN.
Mr. McCoury was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Montie and Savannah Callahan McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Mabel Louise McCoury, nine brothers, Bernie, Walter, Ira, Ernest, Homer, Ray, George, Warren and William, and three sisters, Rosie, Vernie and Lucy.
Mr. McCoury was a member of Roan Mountain First Baptist Church and a member of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge. He was retired from the Carter County Sheriff's Department and Roan Mountain State Park. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home or other times at the residence of his son, Jerry McCoury, 120 Old Rock Quarry Road, Roan Mountain. The graveside service and interment will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 5, at Freeman Cemetery, Roan Mountain.

p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. A.G. Wagner, the Rev. Jerry Honeycutt and the Rev. Bobby Stout officiating. and Rosie McCurry Wilson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Bruce Palmer, July 14, 2000, a son, Harold Palmer, and two grandsons, Jamie and Todd Palmer.

HAMPTON - Alberta Wilson Lilley, 93, Hampton, passed away Tuesday, September 18, 2018 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Roan Mountain, she was a daughter of the late George Lee & Rosie McCoury Wilson. She was employed in earlier years at the American Bemberg Corporation, North American Rayon Corporation and retired from Texas Instruments. She attended Riverview Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl H. Lilley, two sisters: Virginia Palmer and Mary Lou Winters and her brother: George Lee Wilson, Jr. She loved to cook for her many family members.

Survivors include her sister: Loretta Archer, Elizabethton. Also several nieces & nephews.

A Service to Celebrate the life of Alberta Lilley will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Mark Grubb officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, September 22, 2018 in the Johnson-Roan View Cemetery, Roan Mountain. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 12:20 p.m. Saturday will be: Adam Storie, Keith Morley, Rick Elliott, John Colbaugh, Rodney Payne and Theron Johnson. Peggy Garland, age 79, formerly of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, July 2, 2015, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following an extended illness.

Peggy was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Bernie and Ella Roark McCoury.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby McCoury; and a sister, Margaret Taylor.

Ms. Garland retired from Cannon Memorial Hospital in Banner Elk, North Carolina, where she worked in food service.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roan Mountain and was a former member of Order of Eastern Star of Roan Mountain.

She enjoyed both spending time with and taking care of her family and home cooking.

Survivors include two daughters, Linda Holliday and husband Ron, of Aurora, Colorado, and Marla Riley, of Winder, Georgia; one son, Scott Garland, of Shenandoah, Iowa; four grandchildren, Lyra and Katie Holliday, both of Aurora, Colorado, and Jon and Josh Riley, both of Winder, Georgia; two great grandchildren, Cali and Kendal Riley, both of Winder, Georgia; one sister, Bonnie Odom, Elizabethton; one sister-in-law, Barbara McCoury, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A gathering of remembrance for Ms. Peggy Garland will be conducted at 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 9, 2015, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with Rev. Jerry McCoury, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Charlotte Smith.

There will be a private inurnment service held in the Johnson-Roanview Cemetery.

Ruby Louise Johnson Whitehead, 82, Roan Mountain, passed away Monday, September 20, 2021, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Carrick & Lucy Helen McCoury Johnson. She was retired from US Textile, Newland, North Carolina. She loved to work crossword puzzles and go to yard sales. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Sam Whitehead who passed away March 9, 2016, by a son Kevin Whitehead who passed away March 17, 2021, and a sister Judy Lacy. She was a member of Little Mountain Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: Rita Tolley, Roan Mountain, Clifford Whitehead and companion Judy King, Hampton and Roger Whitehead and wife Margaret, Elizabethton. Six Grandchildren, 15 Great Grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. One Sister: Jodie Smith and husband Malcolm, Roan Mountain and a brother: Rudy Johnson & wife Patricia, Elizabethton. Several nieces & nephews. Her special friends: Betty Street and Margaret Smith.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Derrick Hughes officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 25, 2021, in the Johnson-Roan View Cemetery. Preacher Jerry McCoury, 64, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, September 21, 2015, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Jerry was born in Avery County, N.C., but had lived most of his life as a resident of Roan Mountain, Tenn. He was born on August 10, 1951, a son of the late Bynum and Mabel Freeman McCoury. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Harold Dean McCoury. Jerry was a United States Navy veteran, having served during peacetime. He retired from the Tennessee Department of Transportation, after 45 years of service. He was a preacher, having pastored at Mount Gilead Baptist Church in North Carolina for 27 years, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Roan Mountain. Jerry was also a staff member of Victory Bible Institute in Roan Mountain. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 42 years, Sherry Phillips McCoury, of the home; his daughter, Heather McCoury, also of the home; his son, Joshua McCoury, of Roan Mountain; two sisters, Shirley Dickenson, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Lavana Casterlin, of Mississippi; and twin granddaughters, Eowyn McCoury and Savannah McCoury, both of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A service to honor and celebrate the life of Preacher Jerry McCoury will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, September 24, at Calvary Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with Pastor Tull Oaks and Rev. Jerry Honeycutt officiating. Music will be under the direction of Pastor Doug Bare. The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m., prior to the service at the church, or at the residence at anytime. The graveside service will follow in the Freeman Cemetery in Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers will be selected from Jerry's fellow Pastor friends. Honorary pallbearers will be his fellow employees of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Joyce Ann Winters Hughes, 72, Roan Mountain, went to be with her Lord on Monday, August 1, 2022, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born September 26, 1949 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the later Arthur and Mary Lou Wilson Winters.
Joyce was a homemaker. She attended St. John Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry “Jip” Winters.
Survivors include her husband, J.G. Hughes, who took care of her until her death; her daughters, Denna Harrison (David) and Diane Hughes (Chad Hyder) of Elizabethton; one son, Jeffery (Kim) Hughes of Roan Mountain; three granddaughters, Hailey Hughes, Brittany Tanner and Stephanie Algiere; one great-granddaughter, Adriana Tanner; one sister, Gearldine Winters of Roan Mountain; and one nephew, Keith Winters.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Richard Sheppard and the Rev. Randy English officiating. Music will be provided by Michael Dellinger. Interment will follow in the Johnson-Roan View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.
