Mrs. Minnie Lyons McKeehan, 97, 284 Tester Road, Elizabethton died Tuesday, January 12, 2010 in Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Sam and Ellen Arnett Lyons. Mrs. McKeehan was a homemaker and she was a member of Lynn Avenue Church of God.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Taylor McKeehan; a son, Roy McKeehan; a grandson, Howard Lee McKeehan Jr.; three sons-in-law, Nick Bartalone, William R. Kite and Thomas Herman; five brothers, Harrison Lyons, Alvin Lyons, Jack Lyons, Joe Lyons and Anderson Lyons and a sister, Geneva Hubbard. Survivors include three sons, Norman "Buddy" McKeehan and Howard McKeehan, both of Spruce Pine, NC and Ralph E. McKeehan, Elizabethton; seven daughters, Ola Kite, Kingsport; Peggy Johnson and Pearl Solis, both of Hobbs, New Mexico; Phyllis Bartalone, Elizabethton, Kay Herman, Johnson City, Margaret Lewis, Elizabethton and Wanalynn Chapman, Jonesborough; two brothers, Edward Lyons, Johnson City and Sam Lyons Jr., Indiana and three sisters, Annie Tester, Elizabethton, Martha Fuller, Phoenix, Arizona and Mary Lou Freeman, North Carolina. Numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral service for Mrs. Minnie Lyons McKeehan will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, January 14, 2010 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Rev. Scott Greene officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00-7:00 P.M. on Thursday prior to the funeral service.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, January 15, 2010 in McKeehan Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Everyone will meet at the cemetery at 9:50 A.M. on Friday for the graveside service.

Anna Evelyn Lyons Tester, 98, Elizabethton went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, June 30, 2015, in the Johnson City Medical Center, surrounded by her family and her church family.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Sam D. & Sara Ellen Arnett Lyons. She was retired from the American Bemberg Corporation.

Mrs. Tester faithfully attended Zion Baptist Church where she enjoyed worshipping with her church family. She was a member of First Church of God. She loved both church families. Mrs. Tester loved working in her flowers and enjoyed sharing them with her friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Raymond Tester in 1998, by a son: Charles Tester, two sisters: Geneva Hubbard and Minnie McKeehan and seven brothers: Harrison, Anderson, Joe, Edd, Alvin, Jack & Samuel Junior Lyons.

Survivors include Her Grandsons: Mike Tester and wife Lori, Clearwater, Florida and Drew Tester and wife Jessica, Richmond, Virginia. Two Great Grandchildren: Belle & Ruby. Two Sisters: Martha Fuller, Glendale, Arizona and Mary Lou Graves and husband Godfrey, Murphy, North Carolina. Several Nieces & Nephews including a special niece, Wilma L. Montie Elmer Chesser, 70, Rt 2, died Friday in Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County he was the son of Henry and Lydia Lyons Chesser. Mr. Chesser was a member of Lyons Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He was a carpenter, a farmer, and lumberman.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, one son, and four brothers.

Survivors include his wife Mrs. Mae Sheets Chesser, three sons, Roger Harold Chesser, Montie D. Chesser and Montie Earl Chesser, all of Johnson City. JOHNSON CITY - Ethel May Lyons Street, 101 years young, of Johnson City, passed away on Monday, February, 26, 2018.

She was a native of Carter County and daughter of the late Robert Lyons and Mary Ann Grindstaff Lyons.

In addition to her parents, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Lawrence Street; brothers: Robert Lyons, Basil Lyons, and Henry F. Lyons; sisters: Tempie Lyons, and Joyce Dennis Hale; her sons-in-law, Jimmy Henley, and Delbert Dempsey.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. Everyone who knew Ethel, called her "Nanny".

Those family members left to cherish Ethel's memory include her children: Norma Dempsey, Wayne Street (Helen), Richard Lee Street (Shirley), Larry Street (Ann), Lucy Henley, Melinda Sue Smith (Bill), and James Street (Janel); 15 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great grandchildren; sisters, Jean Mast, and Rose Corell; brother, Carroll Dennis, several nieces and nephews..

A native of Butler, TN she was the daughter of the late George and Agnes Greer Lyons. She retired as an office worker from TN Eastman.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Norton and a great-grandson, Jonathan Woodby.

Survivors include a daughter, Wilma Perkins and husband Dan and a son, Terry Woodby, all of Elizabethton; eight grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren and two sisters, Della Driscoll, Elizabethton and Dorothy Hopson, Big Stone Gap, VA. Della Lee Lyons Woodby Driscoll, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN, passed away Friday, December 20, 2019, at the residence of a son and daughter-in-law, Darris and Ivy Woodby. She was born in Johnson City, TN and was the daughter of the late George Washington Lyons and Agnes Greer Lyons. Della was a homemaker and she was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and all types of crafts including painting, quilting, ceramics, jewelry making and upholstery work.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, William Warren Woodby and her second husband Robert Newman Driscoll; a son, Ronell Driscoll; a granddaughter, Contessa Dee Vanorsdale Besaw; a great-grandson, Jonathan Woodby; a daughter-in-law, Carol Kursey; a niece, Patsy Hopson Mutter and three sisters, Dorothy Hopson, Gladys Norton and Phyllis Lyons. Dorothy Lyons Hopson Moore, 93, of Big Stone Gap, VA, died Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at the Heritage Hall of Big Stone Gap.

She was a daughter of the late George Washington and Agnes Dellarae Greer Lyons.

First and foremost our Mom was a Christian. She loved her church family at Keystone Free Will Baptist Church. When she moved to Big Stone Gap, she worshiped at Trinity United Methodist Church and Heritage Church of God where her son-in-law Ronnie was pastor.

In addition to her parents, her husband, Worley K. Hopson, Son, Bruce Marion and wife Mary, a sister, Gladys Norton and her second husband, H. L. Moore, precedes Dorothy in death.

Survivors include: her daughter Patsy A. and husband Ronnie Mutter and their children and son, Larry K. Hopson and wife Betty Jane and their children; her sister, Della "Dee" Driscoll, a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and special friends, Nancy, Hope, Patti and Dottie.

JOHNSON CITY - Margaret Ann Wright, 91, Johnson City stepped inside the Heavenly Gates, Saturday, January 11, 2020 at her residence.

She was a native of Carter County and was a daughter of the late Chester and Elizabeth Bessie Nidiffer Walker. Mrs. Wright was a charter member of the Full Gospel Holiness Church. She was a foster parent, having fostered over 250 children along with her late husband. Mrs. Wright enjoyed gardening, cooking and loved her family. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Wright in 2017; a sister, Lola Walker; brothers, Carlos, Floyd, Johnny, Lawrence, Lester and Clarence “Bill” Walker; two son-in-laws, Johnny Cross and Jerald Kilby; a grandson, John E. Cross and a granddaughter, Lisa Diane Adams.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlotte Cross and Dean Kilby both of Johnson City; a brother, Jack Walker and wife, Charlotte; a sister, Zelma Lyons; four sisters-in-law, Louise Barnett, Betty Wilson, Ruby Walker and Trula Walker; grandchildren, Patricia Williams, Gregory Cross and Richard Kilby; 10 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; over 250 foster children; many nieces and nephews.

On April 24th, 2022, Georgie M. Potter Morley passed away peacefully after a life filled with adventure, strength, and love. She traveled throughout the US while her husband Wayne served our country, and now they have reunited in heaven.
She was exceedingly generous to everyone; caring for others appeared to come naturally. She was always authentic, genuine, and honest. If you knew her, you were likely touched by her generosity.
She is survived by her two children, four grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She is being honored at a private graveside service at the VA Mountain Home on Monday, May 2nd, 2022.

ELIZABETHTON - Hazel Chesser Collins Johnson, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2017 at her residence after an brief illness. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Fred T. & Ethel M. Lowe Chesser. Mrs. Johnson retired from the Kitchen staff at Milligan College. She was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. She loved her family, cooking and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands: Clifton Collins and Harold Johnson, a daughter: Nancy Collins, Three sons: Rusty, Randy and Freddie Collins an infant son, an infant daughter, three brothers: Clyde, Allen & Harrison Chesser and a sister: Linda Faye Chesser.

Survivors include Three Daughters: Joan Garland, Joyce Miller & husband Sonny all of Elizabethton and Judy Bowling & husband Dean, Hampton. A Step-Son: Keith Johnson, Roan Mountain. Six Grandchildren: Jason Collins, Cynthia Bowling, Daniel Bowling, Joey Miller, Brandon Garland and Lucas Garland. Five Great Grandchildren: Curtiss Carden, Haley Carden, Kaleb Miller, Paige Collins and Daniel Bowling. Two Brothers: Ray Chesser and wife Charlotte, and Norman Chesser and wife Connie. ELIZABETHTON - Wanda Louise Chesser Blevins, 86, Elizabethton, passed away Saturday, June 5, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 21, 1935 in Johnson City to the late Monte & Mae Sheets Chesser. She was a homemaker. She loved to sew, quilt and work with crafts. Mrs. Blevins was a member of First Baptist Church but attended Valley Forge United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clarence Blevins who passed away July 19, 2008, by two brothers: Alfred & Harold Chesser and a sister, Mary Benfield.

Survivors include her sons & daughters-in-law: Carter & Terri Blevins and C.J. & Leslie Blevins all of Elizabethton. A daughter: Christine Hardin, Johnson City. Four Grandchildren: Sarah Putland & husband Steve, Abigail Blevins, Brock Morell and Tatum Morell. Her Sisters: Eunice Hicks and Peggy Hicks both of Jonesborough, a brother: MD Chesser, Elizabethton. Her special friends: Shirley Fender, Dorothy Little, Hester Layne, Barbara Anthony and Ruth Barnett.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, June 7, 2021 in Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Richard Blevins officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

ELIZABETHTON - Montie "Earl" Chesser, age 59, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at his beloved home. He was born in Carter County, Tennessee.

Earl enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 18, and devoted 4 years to serving our country. After retirement from the armed forces, Earl returned to Carter County to pursue his career, and natural talent as a Diesel Mechanic. Earl was a 'Good Ol' Country Boy" in every sense of the term. It didn't matter if Earl was fishing, shooting guns, or driving around enjoying the natural beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, he was always enjoying life's simplest pleasures.

He is survived by his only child who was his pride and joy, Amanda Thrift also known as Brute or Bae throughout her childhood years; his former spouse, Cindy Chesser; five brothers, M.D. Chesser, Robert Benfield, Dale Benfield, Alan Benfield, and Danny Ray Benfield; six sisters, Peggy Hicks, Unise Hicks, Louse Blevins, Connie Henry, Willma Benfield, and Mary Sparks, who all reside in East Tennessee.

Earl will continue to be loved and forever missed by his family, friends, and beloved cat, Noodles.

A Committal Service and Inurnment will be held at 1:45PM Friday, April 12, 2019 at Mountain Home National Cemetery with military honors to be rendered by the Boone Dam VFW Post #4933.

JOHNSON CITY - Betty Jean Casteel Miller, 80, of Johnson City passed away on October 28, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Washington County, she is the daughter of the late Elbert and Eliza Lyons Casteel. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Edward Miller; son, Roger Sells Miller; and sisters, Margie Fry and Christine Owen.

Betty was of the Free Will Baptist faith and is described by loved ones as energetic and feisty. She was a loving, strong woman who loved cooking, spending time with her family, and loving on her dog, Kilbee.

Those left to cherish Betty's memory include: son, Ricky Edward Miller of Johnson City; brothers, Frank Casteel, Jr., Cecil Casteel, Gilbert Casteel, Joe Casteel, David Casteel, Wayne Casteel, and R.Y. Casteel; sisters, Francis Jones and Barbara Jones; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and special friend, James Rowe.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to all friends and family and the 6300 floor of the JCMC.

An entombment will be held in the mausoleum at Washington County Memory Gardens, Johnson City on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 1:00 PM. JOHNSON CITY - Mike A. Potter, 73, Johnson City passed away Monday, October 31, 2022 after a brief illness in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center. He was a native and lifelong resident of Washington County and was a son of the late Jesse Reed Potter and Florence Bell Potter. Mike was a faithful member of McKinley Memorial Bible Church. He loved his Pastor and church family. Mike was a U.S. Marine veteran having served his country in Vietnam. He was a racing legend, having raced locally and making 60 NASCAR Cup Series starts. Mike also made many starts in the Late Model Sportsman Series and 21 starts in the Xfinity Series. He raced from 1968 until 2021. Mike had several business ventures including owning Surplus Brokers in Johnson City.

Survivors include his brother, Gary L. Potter and his wife, Linda and their daughter, Charlene Morton and husband, Steven all of Johnson City; his special friends, Pastor Lennie Smith, Debbie Fitzgerald, church family and all of his racing friends.

Funeral services for Mike will be conducted at 1:00 PM Friday, November 4, 2022 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Pastor Lennie Smith officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until the service hour. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 PM in the Bell Cemetery, Limestone Cove Road, Unicoi, TN. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

ELIZABETHTON — Nancy Mae Collins, 51, 109 Butterfly Lane, Elizabethton passed away Wednesday September 1, 2010 in the Johnson City Medical Center.

She was a Carter County native.

Nancy was a 1978 graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was employed as a beautician for several years. She loved spending time with her family. She was a Free Will Baptist.

Nancy was preceded in death by her father Clifton Collins in 1973 by three brothers: Rusty Collins, Freddie Collins and Randy Chesser, her step-father: Harold Johnson and an infant brother and sister, Joe & Linda Sue.

Survivors include her mother: Hazel Collins Johnson. Three Sisters & Brothers-In-Law: Judy and Dean Bowling, Hampton, Joan and David Garland and Joyce and Sonny Miller all of Elizabethton. A Step-Brother: Keith Johnson, Roan Mountain. Her Nieces & Nephews: Jason, Cynthia, Daniel, Joey, Brandon and Locus, Her special great nieces & nephews: Curtis, Haley, Caleb and Page.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Danny Blevins officiating. Friends may also call at the residence.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. It was her wish to be cremated and private graveside service at a later date

Mark Allen Chesser, 58, died peacefully Saturday, September 17, 2022, at his home surrounded by family and friends. He was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., January 3, 1964, to the late Dewey Allen Chesser and Minnie Katharine Baird.
He is survived by his wife and soulmate, Ann Shell Chesser; daughter, Courtney Chesser and her partner Matt Palmer; special grandchildren, Lincoln Mitchell and Lennox Mathew; son, Mark Allen Chesser II, and two special foster sons, Sean Burd and Chandler Lewis; daughters, Ashley Palmer and Jenny Glynn; sisters, Anita Fenner and Christy Thomas; lifelong best friend and brother, Sonny Miller; fur babies, Ellie and Tater; and many close cherished family members near and far.
Mark enjoyed spending time with family, eating home cooked meals, and talking to many friends in the garage listening to music, especially the Grateful Dead. He was very proud of all his children. He loved his grandsons and enjoyed them coming over to visit with Papaw. Any stray animal in the neighborhood would make its way to Mark’s ark and he would feed it and nurse it back to health and keep it. Mark cherished all the memories and good times with his family and friends. We reminisced often of past days, simpler times and when people were good to each other. Thoughts of family gathering together on Sundays and spending the afternoon eating, talking and watching kids play.
Mark is to be cremated with no formal services.
