There were two persons named John H. Arnold. The first was a son of Meredith Dugger Arnold, and was born in about . He appeared in the 1850 Johnson County, TN census as an 11 year old son of Meredith. He could not be identified in subsequent census records for Johnson County, meaning he either moved out of the county, or that he died.
The second John H. Arnold appears in the 1860 Johnson County census as a 5 year old member of Meredith Dugger's household. In this listing, he is placed out of birth year sequence, and is listed at the bottom. In the 1870 census, he is listed as 15 year old John H. McQueen in the household of Clara McQueen, who is the daughter of Meredith D. Arnold. Clara had married Wiley A. McQueen on 7 Oct 1860 following the 1860 census. Their daughter Hannah is also listed in the Clara Arnold McQueen's 1870 household. Since the marriage of Clara Arnold to Wiley A. McQueen follows the birth of John H. Arnold by five years, it is uncertain who his father is.

John H. Arnold, age 85, died at his home, Butler, Tenn., RFD Route 3, Thursday night at 11:45 o'clock after a short illness.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Doe Baptist church Saturday morning at 10:00 with the Rev. Gregg, pastor of the church officiating. Interment will be in the Arnold cemetery.
Survivors are six daughters, Mrs. Nell Pleasant, Mrs. Aradia Davis, Mrs. Elsie Davis, Mrs. Ruth Stout, Mrs. Maude Stout, and Mrs. Lottie Gentry, all of Johnson County; three sons, G. G., A. J. and E. W. Arnold, all of Johnson County.

James B. Arnold, age 91 of Route 3, Mountain City (Dewey Community) died at his home on Thursday, Sept. 24, after a long illness. He was a native of Johnson County and a retired farmer; a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.
Survivors include the wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Swift Arnold of Mountain City; five sons, Joe Arnold, Tazewell, Va., Spencer Arnold and Gaitha Arnold, both of Mountain City, Boyd Arnold, Elizabethton and John Arnold, Wilmington, Del.; two daughters, Mrs. Pearl Bare and Mrs. Betty Campbell, both of Elizabethton; two brothers, Wilburn Arnold of Elizabethton and Modd Arnold of Bristol; two sisters, Mrs. Clara Estep, Elizabethton and Mrs. Lottie Davis, Bristol; 21 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Lottie[sic] Ossie Garland, 73, of Rt. 6, Johnson City, died at her residence Thursday afternoon, from an apparent heart attack. She was a native of Johnson County, but had made her home in Carter County for the past 13 years. She was a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Robinson Arnold. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis C. Garland, who died May 31, 1969. She was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

Funeral services were conducted Sunday, 2 p.m., from the Sinking Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Reece Harris officiating. Burial was in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

MOUNTAIN CITY – Gatha Arnold, age 87, of Swift Hollow Road , Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, November 22, 2006, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.

Gatha was born on May 7, 1919, in Johnson County to the late J.B. and Lizzie Swift Arnold. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during WW II and was a member of the Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Pearl Hubbard; and four brothers, Clarence, Joseph, Boyd and Spencer Arnold.

Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Laura Swift Arnold; his son, Paul Arnold and wife, Wanda, of Mountain City; his sister, Betty Collins, of Stoney Creek; his brother, John Arnold and wife, Karen, of Mountain City; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, November 24, 2006, at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Virgil Cretsinger, Minister, and Herman Trivette, Minister, officiating. The committal service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25th, at Wilson Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Johnson County Honor Guard.

Lillian Pearl Hubbard, 82, 1105 Highway 91, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2006, at her residence.

Mrs. Hubbard was a native of Johnson County and a daughter of the late James and Lizzie Swift Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Boyd Arnold, Spencer Arnold and Joe Arnold.

Mrs. Hubbard was retired from Bemburg and North American Rayon Corporation. She was a member of East River Park Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband, Walter Sherman Hubbard, of the home; a sister, Betty Collins, Elizabethton; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Karen Arnold and Gatha and Laura Arnold, all of Mountain City; stepchildren and spouses, Michael and Sue Hubbard, Johnson City, Eugene and Patsy Hubbard and Lester Lee and Terry Hubbard, all of Elizabethton, and Mary Katherine and Jim Mason, Mountain Home, Ark.; special grandson, Joshua Howard Hubbard, Elizabethton; and special niece, Mary Short, Elizabethton. Six grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Hubbard will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 8, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. John Smith, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of John and Mary Smith. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service in the chapel, or friends may call at the residence at anytime. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 9, in the Caldwell Springs Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Benny Lyons, Robert Stines, Jim Whitehead, Mike Hubbard, Ken Arnold, James Arnold, Gene Hubbard and Bernie Lewis. Honorary pallbearers will be the Stoney Creek Volunteer Fire Department and the Carter County Rescue Squad. Those who plan to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m. Sunday to travel in procession to the cemetery. Betty Jean Arnold Campbell Collins, 85, of Elizabethton, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. Betty was born in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late James and Lizzie Swift Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Kenneth Campbell; her second husband, Oliver "Shorty" Collins; two daughters, Della Arnold and Ann Watson; one son, Lee Campbell; one sister; and four brothers.
Betty retired as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
Those left to cherish her memory include two daughters, Mary Short and Lynn Ballard, both of Elizabethton; one son, Robert Campbell, of Crestview, Fla.; one brother, John Arnold, of Mountain City; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Betty Jean Arnold Campbell Collins will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Mr. John H. Smith, minister, officiating. Music will be provided by Jennifer Hill. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday, prior to the service, or at the residence of her daughter, Mary Short, at anytime. Mary Arnold White, 93, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton with her son, Glen White, at her side.
She was born April 7, 1924 to the late Nora and Joseph Daniel Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Ruth Lockhart; brother, Stacy Arnold; husband, James Rondal White; daughter, Shelby Bunton; and grandson, David Bunton.
Mary had a long career at the Giant and Food Lion Supermarkets. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Elizabethton and she delighted in being a top seller of dried fruit and fancy nuts each fall for the church's Backpack Ministries' fundraiser.
She is survived by her son, Glen White and wife Vickie, and son-in-law, Billy Bunton of Elizabethton; grandson, Joe White and Debra Chandler of Elizabethton; granddaughter, Donna Bunton and Dave Lynch of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-grandchildren, Eric Afflerbach and Nikki of Miami Beach, Fla., Cara White and Alex White of Elizabethton; and many extended family members and beloved friends who will miss her dearly.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 17, from 12:30 until 2 p.m. at Memorial Funeral Chapel in Elizabethton. The service is at 2 p.m. officiated by Rev. Kenneth Jordan. Private interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Mark Newman officiating.

Hit-Run Auto Strikes Employee of Local Rayon Mills
Emerson Cole, 26, a resident of the Gap Creek section, was killed last night when he was struck by a hit-run driver, on the Glanzstorff highway near Rio Vista. Butler Wilson, 28, of Rio Vista, who was with Cole, was also struck by the first auto. He suffered a fracture in the right temple, lacerations over the face and small lacerations on the hands. He was treated at the hospital and released.
Cole was hit the second time by an unidentified black sedan as he lay on the highway after Jesse L. Bowery, who first hit him, had gone to call an ambulance. Bowery, driving a couple toward Elizabethton, attempted to halt the hit-run car but was unable to do so.
Cole, an employee of the North American Rayon Corporation, died in a local hospital less than an hour after the unusual accident. He never regained consciousness.
Bowery, who called an ambulance and aided officers in investigating the case, said he struck Cole and Wilson when they were scuffling in the middle of the highway. He said the blinding lights of an approaching auto made it impossible for him to see the young men until it was too late.
C. E. Phillips, proprietor of a nearby filling station, who witnessed the accident, said the two men, had been scuffling in the road for several minutes.
Bowery halted his machine and rushed back to where Cole lay. Wilson was sitting on a bank, Bowery said, and seemed to be dazed. "I then jumped in the car went to the filling station to get aid and call and ambulance. When I got back I saw a car approach and hit Cole. It never stopped," said Bowery.
Lonnie Cole, a brother, said they had been waiting for Emerson to return home from work since three o'clock. Johnson City and Carter County officers and a state highway patrolman have been searching for the driver of the hit-run car.
Cole's injuries consisted of a fractured skull and internal injuries.
He is survived by his father, Frank Cole; his mother; four brothers, Lonnie, Lawrence, Paul, and David; and three sisters, Annie, Vada, and Eva. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow morning at ten o'clock at the Union Cemetery on the Cherokee Road near Johnson City. The Rev. Elijah Plaster will officiate.

Mr. Thomas M. Cole, Sr., 91, Jonesborough, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015, at the Christian Care Center of Johnson City.

Mr. Cole was a deacon and Sunday school teacher in church until his illness did not allow him to attend. He was of the Baptist faith. He told everyone he met of his savior, Jesus Christ, until he could not speak any longer.

Mr. Cole worked for Tennessee Game and Fish for eleven years prior to retiring from the US Postal Service as a rural carrier after thirty years of service. He worked part-time at Morris-Baker for several years.

He served in the US Navy aboard the USS Melvin as a Torpedoman's Mate Third Class during World War II.

He was preceded in death by: his mother, Emily Queen Cole; father, Thomas Jefferson Cole; wife of forty-three years, Bernice Edwards Cole; second wife, Thelma Braswell Cole; one brother, Melvin Cole; and four sisters, Maxie Goodman, Lydia Mae Johnson, Mallie Burleson, and Ruth Chapman.

He is survived by: son, Thomas M. Cole, Jr., and his wife Cathy; twin daughters, Sharon and Karen Cole; four grandchildren, Eric Jones, Kristy Jones, Jeromy Jones, and Nikki Cole Weaver; four great grandchildren, Jennifer Jones, Brandon Jones, and J.T. Steet and Madison Jones; and numerous nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - U.G. Cole, age 90, of the Stoney Creek community of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

He was a son of the late Albert and Amanda Campbell Cole and was born in Carter County on June 2, 1928. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Larry Cole and Massie Cole; two brothers, Spurgeon Cole and Conley Cole; and two sisters, Myrtle Nidiffer and Juanita Hardin.

U.G. retried after twenty-two years from the Carter County Highway Department as a heavy equipment operator. He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, enjoyed listening to gospel and bluegrass music and loved working around his home.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-five years, Ethel Linville Cole of the home; four sons, Terry Cole of Elizabethton, Willie Cole and Grant Cole, both of N.C. and Randy Cole and his wife, Theresa of Elizabethton; two daughters, Geneva Lauterbach and Barbara Ann Teston and her husband, Jim, all of N.C.; fourteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral/graveside service to honor the life of U.G. Cole will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Garland Cemetery in the Stoney Creek Community of Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Kelly and Lola Grindstaff Cole. He was retired from the American Water Heater. Mr. Cole served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Piney Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Johnson City.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a step-son and a brother.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Andrew J. and Eliza Stout Arnold. She had lived most of her life in Elizabethton before going to Florida this month. Mrs. Campbell was a longtime member of Calvary Baptist Church and more recently of Freedom Road Baptist Church. She was a retired manager of Droke Shoe Store. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard D. Campbell, November 7, 2015, and by two sisters and one brother. Survivors include her daughter, Anne Campbell Davis and husband Ray, Ormond Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Rick MacLean, St. Louis, Mo., and Dr. Brett L. MacLean and wife Sheri and their four children, Dawson, Kenan, Silas and Haven of Mali, Africa; and two sisters, Pat Burleson and husband James, Johnson City, and Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton. JOHNSON CITY - Pat Arnold Burleson, Johnson City, died Tuesday, December 3, 2019, at Life Care Center of Gray, following an extended illness.

Pat was a native of Elizabethton and had been a resident of Johnson City since 1959. She was a daughter of the late A. J. and Eliza Stout Arnold.

Pat was a homemaker, but formerly worked as a secretary then licensed Insurance Agent with American National and Independent Life Insurance Companies. She was an ASL Interpreter for the deaf and worked with the Johnson City School System as well as various local churches.

Pat was a member of Boones Creek Bible Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, a former member of the Women's Republican Club and former Girl Scout Troop Leader.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Burleson, in 2016, a grandson, Joshua Grant Ramsey, her brother, Delmas Arnold, three sisters, Velma Roberts, Geneva White and Frances Campbell.

Pat is survived by three children, Tom Burleson and wife Nancy, Kingsport, Jamie Burleson Harber and husband Walt, Johnson City, Cyndi Burleson Ramsey, Johnson City; one sister, Madelyn Jones, Elizabethton; two grandsons, John and James Burleson, Kingsport; several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a very special "Thank You" to the nursing staff of Life Care Center of Gray for their loving care of Pat during her stay.

Madelyn Arnold Jones, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, December 24, 2019, at her residence. A native of Elizabethton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew Jackson Arnold and Eliza Veda Stout Arnold.
Mrs. Jones was a 1949 graduate of Happy Valley High School and worked in the U.S. Navy Department from 1952 to 1955 before returning to Tennessee. She retired in 1999 as Deputy Clerk of the Carter County Circuit Court Clerk Office. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.
Mrs. Jones was very funny, smart, helpful and loved everybody. She enjoyed spending time at the lake and with her church family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Dean Jones Sr., four sisters and one brother.
Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Kelly Anne Jones Barkley and husband David, Cary, N.C.; a son, James Dean Jones Jr. and wife Myra Little Jones, Elizabethton; and a granddaughter, Megan Danielle Magwood, Chapel Hill, N.C. In his spare time, he loved to farm.

DAVID ARNOLD
Funeral services were held Thursday at the Hill Chapel for little six-year-old David Arnold of Route 1, Mountain City, who died at General Hospital after being admitted on November 14 with a definite diagnosis of polio.
The little boy was rushed from Johnson City, led by special highway patrol all the way to Knoxville by the Johnson City Emergency and Life Saving Squad. He died a short time after admission.
Survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Spencer Arnold; two sisters, Sophia Elizabethton and Viola Gray; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Arnold; and maternal grandmother, Mrs. Turnmire.

Mary Nell Fritts, 66, of Mountain City, Tenn.,, passed away on Monday, October 9, 2017, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born on April 17, 1951 to the late Spencer Carl Arnold and Gay Viola Turnmire Arnold. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her sister, Gray Taylor, and a brother, David Arnold.
Mary was kind-hearted, loving and caring to everyone around her. She loved everyone and through her love and kindness, made many, many special friends. Many people knew Mary from her work at the Dollar General Store, where she met each customer with a warm smile. She loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mary enjoyed traveling and visiting places. She especially loved going to the beach and yard sales. She loved living in the mountains and really enjoyed the winter snow, Christmas time and Santa Claus. She was a member of Beta Theta.
Mary was a member of Dyson Grove Baptist Church. She loved her church, church family and enjoyed hearing the church choir sing.
Those left to cherish her memories include her loving husband of 48 years, Earl M. Horace Arnold "Hoss" Broome, Jr., age 92, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, September 04, 2015 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, surrounded by his family. Horace was born in Roda, Virginia to the late Horace Arnold Broome and Cora Lee Nave Broome. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Whitney Shea Broome; and a brother, Bob Broome.

Horace founded Broome Real Estate in 1959, which is the longest, active Real Estate firm in Elizabethton. He was the first President of the Elizabethton Board of Realtors and the past President of East Tennessee Board of Realtors. He was the managing broker for FHA in East Tennessee for 25 years and was instrumental in the zoning for the City of Elizabethton during the years of 1969-1970. He was a member of the Toastmasters, a member of Capt. Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166, the American Legion Watauga Post #49, the Elizabethton Elks Lodge, the Shriners and Masons. He designed and held the patent on the 10-E-C Tag Logo. He was a member of Elizabethton High School and Milligan College football teams. He was an avid Elizabethton High School and University of Tennessee football fan, Peyton Manning and Jason Whitten, were his favorites. He was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, but had served as a Deacon for many years at Immanuel Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy veteran, having served in both World War II and the Korean Confict. He enjoyed his comradery with "The Lingerfelt Pharmacy Boys." He loved gardening, was an avid fisherman, hunter and was affectionately known as the "Catfish man of Watauga Lake." Hoss set a fashion trend with his bibbed overalls.

Those left to cherish his memory, include his wife of 68 years, Grace Lee Hopson Broome, of the home; two sons, Horace Arnold "Bubba" Broome, III and Rick Lee Broome and wife Teresa; one daughter, Tana Star Johnson and husband Mike; a granddaughter, Mackenzie Danielle Broome; and two brothers, William "Bill" Broome and Carroll Broome. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

ELIZABETHTON - Carroll L. Broome, age 87, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, July 27, 2018 at his residence following an extended illness.

A native of Elizabethton, he was a son of the late Horace Arnold and Cora Nave Broome. Carroll was a 1948 graduate of Elizabethton High School and graduated from East TN State University. He retired as a Vice-President with Citizen's Bank. Carroll was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a very active member of First United Methodist Church, Elizabethton where he had served as a member of the Administrative Board and was a past Sunday School teacher. Carroll served as a member of the Elizabethton School Board; had been a member of the Civitan Club of Elizabethton and the Betsy Squares (square dancing). He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, hunting and loved to be around people. He was also a University of TN football fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Garrison Broome; sons, James Lavan Broome and David Brian Broome, an infant grandson, Austin James Frazier; Brothers, Horace Broome Jr. and Bob Broome; sisters-in-law, Grace Broome, Margaret Broome and Dixie Broome and nephews, Horace "Bubba" Broome III and Al Broome and his beloved dog, Millie. Loyd W. McEwen, age 90, of North Church St, Mountain City, passed away the evening of Friday December 16, 2022 at his home. Loyd was born September 12, 1932 to the late Walsy G. McEwen and Willa G. Nave McEwen in Johnson County, TN. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Billie Lee Johnson McEwen; sister, Jewel “Sis” Lewis; brothers, Mark McEwen and Hiram McEwen.

Loyd was a graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and participated in numerous submarine dives, including one the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine the USS Nautilus.

Loyd W. McEwen was hired with the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1960s. During his tenure, he held the roles of a Consumer Safety Officer/Inspector in the States of Ohio and North Carolina and Supervisory Consumer Safety Officer/Direct First Line Supervisor in the State of Virginia. It was in 1976 when Loyd applied and was selected as FDA's first ever Direct First Line Supervisor to be stationed at the FDA Richmond, VA Resident Post. As such, he was instrumental in strengthening cooperative Federal State Relations, particularly with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), Division of Consolidated Laboratory Services (DCLS) and Virginia Department of Health (VDH).

Loyd was an outstanding supervisor that went above and beyond in caring for the mission of the agency and his employees. Loyd strongly believed in training and providing detailed guidance to the employees he hired and supervised. He made sure that the employees understood what having a balanced work life meant with family even though he would work you greater than 8 hours. Loyd had high expectations of his employees and would do anything for anyone that he worked with for career development.

In 1993, Loyd was honored to receive the FDA Award of Merit, the agency's highest form of personal recognition. He earned this award for always going above and beyond as a Direct First Line Supervisor and cherished it until his retirement in Jan. 1999.

When he was able he enjoyed growing a garden. Loyd spent a lot of time talking to people and especially his North Church St. Mountain City, TN friends and neighbors.

Those left to cherish his memory include his daughters, Tonda McEwen (Adam) and Susan Johnson (Clyde); grandchildren, Shelby Hayes, April Hayes, Jamie Hayes and Willa Campen; sisters-in-law; Amelia McEwen, Jean McEwen and Carolyn Adams; several nieces and nephews; cousins, Haggard, James, and Charles McEwen; special caregivers, Marie, Tammy, Jeraldine (of Richmond) , the late Dora Adamsand many others past and present.

The family will receive friends from 12:00-2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022 at Mountain City Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with Daniel Jones officiating. The graveside service and burial will follow the funeral from Reece Memorial Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard. Mark McEwen, age 85, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with his Lord on Friday, September 6, 2019 after a lengthy illness. He was born May 8, 1934 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walsy McEwen and Willa Nave McEwen. In addition to his parents Mark was preceded in death by a brother, Hiram McEwen.

Mark loved his family, especially his six children, the grandchildren and great grandchild and will be truly missed by all. He never met a stranger and enjoyed life. Farming was his life and he looked forward to each day.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he served as a Trustee.

NEWPORT – Roy Daniel Nave, 80, Newport, TN was ushered into the presence of the Savior he loved on November 18, 2015.

He was born in Doeville, Tennessee to the late Nick & Anna Opal Stalcup Nave on December 25, 1934. The family moved from Tennessee to Oregon in 1947, and then to Mishawaka, Indiana in 1950, where he lived until May 2015. He was a 1953 Graduate of Mishawaka High School and a lifelong employee of Ball Band, until his retirement in 1990. He married Marilyn Patricia (Pat) Scott on October 30, 1954, faithfully serving her as godly husband and care giver for 61 years.

Roy placed his faith in Jesus Christ in 1957, and lived as a man of God. He was loved and respected by people in Indiana, Tennessee and in Texas, where he & Pat wintered for 17 seasons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Myretha Arnold.

Born in Johnson City, she was the daughter of the late Mallie Cole Burleson and Arley Robert Burleson. She lived her entire life in Johnson City.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Herb H. Matherly; her son, Herbert Matherly Junior; and three brothers, Bill, Bob, and Zane Burleson.

Jean's survivors include two daughters, Jennifer Matherly, Kingsport; Laura Matherly, United Arab Emirates ; two granddaughters, Emily Matherly, Boulder, Colorado; and Angela Matherly, Colorado Springs, Colorado; brother, Charles Burleson, Atlanta; and sister, Patsy Waters, Limestone. A host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Ms. Jean.

She attended Fall Street Baptist Church as a child and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.

She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees from East Tennessee State University. She was a retired teacher from the Johnson City School System where she taught fifth and sixth grades at North Side and Henry Johnson Elementary Schools.

Jean was a homemaker who enjoyed bridge, crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, quilting, and time with family and friends.

D. Joan Furches, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Minister Harry A. Cole and Aileen Walters Cole, born to them on January 13, 1934 in Jonesborough, Tennessee.
Joan was a business owner in Jonesborough, Tennessee from November 1965 until 2016, owning and operating three different businesses; Furches Variety Store, The Emporium and Jonesborough Antique Mart. She was active in many of Jonesborough activities; The Progressive Dinner, she started Jonesborough Trick or Treats, by collecting money from merchants, she organized 4th of July fireworks for many years. November 29, 2015 was proclaimed Joan Furches day by the Jonesborough Board of Mayor & Alderman for her commitment to Jonesborough.
Along with her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her brother, Robert H. Cole, her daughter, Cynthia K. Furches, her grandsons, B.J. Chase and William A. Greenlee, Jr.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Sue Chase (Bill) of Conklin and Lesa Joan Torbett of the home, two grandsons, Jason A. Greenlee of Jonesborough and Michael A. Chase of Erwin, several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Shirley Wright Pierce, 80, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 16, 2019, in Charlottesville, Va. Shirley was born in Johnson County, Tenn., to the late Stansell Arthur Arnold and Alice Wanda Ruth Stout Arnold. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Eugene Wright.
Shirley was a loving, Christian wife, mother and grandmother and was a member of Centerview Church of Christ. She had worked as an administrative assistant and enjoyed dancing, spending time with her family and friends and going to eat at Joe's Crab Shack.

MOUNTAIN CITY — Tommy Keith Garland, age 80, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at the Mountain City Care Center.

He was born on December 26, 1929, to the late Dana Lilford and Nina Easter Davis Garland. In addition to his parents, Tommy was preceded in death by an infant sister, Winnie Lee; two additional sisters: Frieda Noens and Cherene Nichols; brothers: D.L. Garland and Del Garland; and a very special military friend, Dale L. Jackson.

Tommy was a retired carpenter and building contractor, was the former Superintendent of the Town of Mountain City Public Works and former operator of Shell Service Station of Mountain City. He was a member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church and a United States Army Veteran.

Tommy is survived by his wife of 43 years, Diane Garland; daughter: Beverly and husband, Carter Baker, of Bristol, VA, and Mandy L. Garland and Dennis Greene, of Butler, TN; sons: Michael K. Garland, of CA, James L. Garland and wife, Debbie, of Abingdon, VA, David L. Garland and wife, Karen, of Johnson City, TN, Andy Garland and Saul B. Garland, both of Mountain City, TN; brothers: Dearl Garland, of CA, and Gary Garland and wife, Donna, of Greeneville, TN; grandchildren: Courtney Garland, Preston Garland, Brantlee Garland, Bethany Garland, Zachary Greene, Karter Beth Baker, Gracie Baker and Melissa Brown; and several nieces and nephews.

Gary C. Garland of Tusculum, TN, passed away February 22nd at the age of 73. He was born on January 19, 1948 to the late Dana Lilford and Nina Easter Davis Garland.Gary grew up in Mountain City and was a 1967 graduate of Johnson County High School.

He was a veteran of the Vietnam War and received the following medals and commendations: National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with three bronze services stars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal, and Marksman. In October of 1975, he came to Greene County as a Trooper for the Tennessee Highway Patrol and retired in 2002. Gary was a member of Shiloh Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where he had served as an Elder.

Survivors include his wife: Donna Brooks Hayes Garland; three children: Brett Garland, Holly Hayes Ferguson and husband, Kevin, Jesse Hayes and his wife, Amber; six grandchildren: Justin Gosnell, Joseph Gosnell, Grace Hayes, Martin Hayes, Allison Hayes, and Matthew Hayes; sister-in-law: Diane Garland; several nieces and nephews, including a special niece: Sandy Garland; father-in-law: J. Tommy Arnold, 29, Rt. 3, Butler, was dead on arrival at Johnson County Memorial Hospital after a logging accident Monday morning.

A life-long resident of Johnson County, Mr. Arnold was employed as a logger and was a member of the Little Doe Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Mrs. Eliza Arnold, in 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Faye Brickey Arnold; one daughter, April Dawn Arnold, of the home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Park Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler; one sister, Mrs. Lynn (Sandy) Snyder, Rt. 3, Butler; his maternal grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Victor Broyles, Rt. 3, Butler; and his paternal grandfather, Ed Arnold, Rt. 1, Butler. ELIZABETHTON - Bubba Broome, age 65, Elizabethton went home to be with his Lord on May 22 2016. He was the son of Grace Lee Hopson Broome and the late Horace Arnold Broome Jr. Throughout his childhood years Bubba played many sports and was a member of the Elizabethton Boxing Team. He boxed in and won three Golden Glove Tournaments. In later years he was the boxing champion of his battalion while serving in the US Marines in Cuba. During his high school years Bubba was the starting quarterback for the Elizabethton High School Cyclones in his sophomore, Junior and senior years and was a member of the graduating class of 1969. Bubba received a football scholarship at Tennessee Tech University and made the team his first year; however after playing only one season he left to join the United States Marine Corp and was featured on the US Marine Corp Recruitment Poster in 1972. Bubba continued to enjoy sports throughout his life; he was an avid golfer and coached his daughter's softball and basketball teams in the 1990's. Bubba was a member of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars and Moose Lodge. Bubba was a retired realtor and licensed real estate appraiser. In addition to his father he was preceded in death by a daughter, Whitney Shea Broome in 2004. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughter, Mackenzie Danielle Broome, Johnson City TN, his mother, Grace Lee Broome, one brother Rick Lee Broome and wife Teresa and one sister, Tana Starr Johnson and husband Michael all of Elizabethton. Several uncles and cousins also survive. Bubba had many wonderful friends who loved, visited and cared for him during his declining health. He will be truly missed by those who will always remember his broad smile and love of life, family and friends.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Garry Edwards and Terry Pope officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday May 26, 2016 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Music will be provided by Mr. Scott Reynolds. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. The family would like to extend a special Thank You to the staff of Ivy Hall Nursing home for the love and care provided to him during his illness. In lieu of flowers the family would like to request donations to the American Cancer Society % Lou Cooter, 415 Washington Avenue, Elizabethton, Tenn. 37643 or the Elizabethton Public Library. Active Pallbearers will be John Hardin, Tom Powers, Robert Broome, Ed Garland, Tom Corbett, Mickie Mathis David Smith and Kenneth Dugger. She was a Carter County native. Pam was a 1971 graduate of Unaka High School. She was a member of the Order of Confederate Rose "Wild Mountain Roses" Chapter 11 of Elizabethton.

Pam attended Union Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She was loved by many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, C.W. Rambo.

Survivors include her husband of 30 years, Bill Hicks; her mother, Lillie Belle Colbaugh Rambo, Elizabethton; a sister, Paula Rambo, Unicoi; a brother, Perry Rambo and wife Debra, Elizabethton, several cousins and her dog Missy.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2015, in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Ray Colbaugh and Mr. Randy Carrier officiating.
