Rev. Evin Hopson, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from his residence. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Linney and Della Grindstaff Hopson.
Mr. Hopson was a minister and a member of Zion Baptist Church. He had been a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church most of his life.
Mr. Hopson enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, preaching the gospel and spending time with his great-great-granddaughter, Adlynn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Hildred McKinney Hopson; a daughter, Elayna Townsend; and several sisters and brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory include six children, Danny Hopson and wife Betty, Newland, N.C., Gail Hughes and husband Danny, Elizabethton, Vickie Hughes and husband Delbert, Newland, N.C., Cathy Sargent and husband Wes, Elizabethton, Lorana Greene and husband Steve, Roan Mountain, and D.L. Hopson and wife Tammy, Elizabethton; a brother, Ham Hopson, and two sisters, Molly Sluder and Josie Hughes, all of Newland, N.C. Sixteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.
A service to honor the life of Rev. Evin Hopson will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Pastor Allen Laws officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Danny Hopson, D.L. ELIZABETHTON — John Ashley, age 91, 1812 Gap Creek Rd., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, March 28, 2007, in the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness.

He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Jim and Harriett Grindstaff Ashley. Mr. Ashley attended True Gospel Baptist Church and was a member of Highpoint Baptist Church. He retired from Gordon's Furniture after ten years of service. Mr. Ashley served with the US Army during World War II.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Survivors are his wife, Margie Montgomery Ashley, of the home, one daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Joe Nave, one son, Johnny Ashley, all of Elizabethton; two granddaughters, Tammy Ashley, Elizabethton, Patty Jo Singleton, Roan Mountain; three great-grandchildren, Patricia Singleton, Jacob Singleton and Nico Ashley; and one sister, Annie Potter, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Ashley will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 30, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Evangelist Dean Presnell officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7:30 p.m. Friday prior to the service in the chapel. Friends may also call at the residence at anytime.

The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 31, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to meet the family at 9:15 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Captain Lynn H. Folsom VFW Post #2166. She was born on May 2, 1939, in Avery County, NC, a daughter of the late Wash Grindstaff and the late America Carpenter Grindstaff.

Lib was a member of the Pineola Baptist Church where she had served in the choir and as the Church Treasurer. She enjoyed gardening and canning. She was a devoted wife, mama and grandmother who enjoyed cooking for her family and especially for her grandchildren. She retired from Baxter.

She was preceded in death by her Father: Wash Grindstaff; and Mother: America Grindstaff.

Juanita Johnson Buchanan, age 79, of Squirrel Creek, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 11, 2013 at the home of a daughter. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late David A. and Etta Grindstaff Johnson. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, the late Clyde H. Buchanan and the late Paul H. Buchanan; sisters: Judy Buchanan and Mary Haney and three infant sisters; seven brothers: James, Silas, Jesse, Earl, Ted, Paul and Boyd Johnson. Juanita was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church who loved gardening and canning, but mostly her family.

Surviving are three daughters: Shirley McIntosh and husband, Boots, of Newland, Nadine White of Linville Falls and Rose Mary Daniels and husband, Stanley, of Newland; son, Duane Buchanan and wife, Laura, of Pickens, SC; two brothers: Bob Johnson of Hendersonville and Henry Johnson and wife, Jo Ann of Enka-Candler; six grandchildren: Chris McIntosh and wife, Laura, Shannon Fannon and husband, Stacy, Heath Brookshire and wife, Melissa, Travis Daniels and wife, Dorothy, Mitchell Buchanan and Logan Buchanan; ten great-grandchildren: Levi and Hannah McIntosh, Jacob and Caleb Fannon, McKenzie, MeKaylah and Adriana Brookshire, Rylie Daniels, and Makenna and Alexia Buchanan. Perry Hopson, 59, of the Roaring Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at his home.

He was a son of Delpha Hughes Hopson of Roaring Creek and the late Rothrock Hopson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Paulette Hughes. He loved restoring old cars, carp fishing, but mostly he loved his family.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his loving wife of 35 years, Teresa Webb Hopson; daughter, Angel Dugger and husband, Andrew, of Licklog; sons, Chad Hopson and wife, Kristen, of Roaring Creek, and John Hopson and wife, Julie, of Roaring Creek; three grandchildren, Austin and Aaron Dugger and Savannah Hopson; sisters, Brickie Pittman and husband, Joe, of Spruce Pine and Nadine Helton and husband, Jerry, of Roaring Creek. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in The People's Church on Roaring Creek. The Rev. Daniel Nance, the Rev. Chris Nance and the Rev. Jody Almond officiated. Burial followed in the Hopson Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers were Derick Hughes, Gabriel Wise, Joel Buchanan, Hansel Allen, Johnathan Hughes, Ray Howell and Shelton Brooks. Honorary Pallbearers were Aaron and Austin Dugger.

Claude Hamby, age 75, 249 Campbell Hollow Road, Roan Mountain, died at his residence, Wednesday, July 12, 2006, following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby. He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.
Claude Hamby was a loving husband, dad, papaw and father-in-law. He was a friend to all that knew him. He will be greatly missed by everyone. He loved gardening and watching wrestling.
Mr. Hamby was of the Baptist faith and a retired employee of the Carter County Highway Department, after twenty-three years.

J. L. Hamby, age 68, 539 Teaberry Rd. # 3, Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord Friday, December 5, 2008 from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby. Mr. Hamby was a welder and enjoyed working on cars. He was of the Christian faith. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hamby was preceded in death by his siblings Lester Hamby, Claude Hamby, Bruce Hamby, Pauline Moore, Lula Belle Ashley and Mary Lou Reynolds. Survivors include his wife of forty-seven years Sarah Hamby of the home, children: Regina Hutcheson, Elizabethton, Jay Hamby and wife Teralyn, Dyer, IN, Bill Hamby, Ravenden, AR, Rick Hamby, Hammond, IN, one half-daughter: Lisa Crook and husband Kevin, Madisonville, KY, eight grandchildren, a sister, Lorene Connors and husband Bill, Roan Mountain and a brother, Burnett Hamby and his companion Eve Booth, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The Celebration of Life service for Mr. Hamby will be at 10 a.m. Monday, December 8 at the Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Burnett Hamby, 75, of Elizabethton, passed away Monday, August 19, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Barney and Martha Ashley Hamby.
Burnett had lived in Indiana and Arkansas before returning to Carter County. He was a construction worker.
Burnett attended Southside Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his children, Burnett Hamby Jr. and wife Marie Hamby of Elizabethton and Deon Podgorski of Indiana; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Steve Burleson officiating. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Ind.

Mrs. Edna "Louise" Cordell, 86, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord surrounded by her family on Friday, February 9, 2018. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and she loved all her friends at the Waters of Roan Highlands Nursing Home as much as they all loved her.
A native of Roan Mountain, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Ben and Florence Julian Ashley. Mrs. Cordell was a member of Upper Shell Creek Christian Church. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved playing bingo, gardening and growing flowers, crafts and puzzles.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Marshall T. Cordell; a great-grandson, Kasey Hicks; two brothers, James Ashley and Tommy Ashley; two infant brothers, Bobby Jack Ashley and Billy Joe Ashley; and a dear friend, Ester Lester.

Ashley, Roan Mountain, Gene Ashley, Roan Mountain, Norman Ashley, Elizabethton, Roger Ashley, Roan Mountain, and Chuck Ashley, Roan Mountain; and a brother-in-law, Larry Miller, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor the life of Mrs. Edna "Louise" Cordell will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, February 12, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 1 until 2 p.m. Monday, prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow the service in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bret Hicks, Brody Shell, Luke Cordell, Cory Hicks, Dalton Porch and Chase Benett.

Fred Johnson, Jr. (Junior) age 74, Newland, North Carolina went to his eternal home on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 in Charles A. Cannon Jr. Memorial Hospital, Linville, North Carolina.

Junior was a native of Avery County born on August 16, 1936 to Fred & Florence Grindstaff Johnson. Junior was one of a kind, a friend to everyone. He was employed until his time of death at Avery True Value Hardware where he was loved and adored as family. He was proud to be an American and always flew his flag with honor. He loved his family with an unfailing love until the Lord Jesus called him home. His love for the outdoors has been passed on to many others that he came in contact with. He was a member of the Gold Prospectors Association which never made him a rich man but really put a gleam in his eye when he saw "Color."

He was committed to Greater Joy Fellowship where he was an usher and faithful attendee. He was a student of the Holy Bible and could converse with "the best of them" in knowledge of God's Word and expressed his knowledge by teaching Sunday school. Bible studies were always vocal with a seasoned experience of what God had done in his life.

Junior is survived by his sister: Carolyn Pyatte and husband Kenneth. Nine nephews and their wives, two nieces and their husbands, great nieces and nephews of a great number.

A Celebration of life service will be held at Greater Joy Fellowship at a later date with Pastor Ronnie Pyatte officiating.

Robert Wayne Grindstaff, 72, of Roan Mountain, passed away Tuesday, May 21, 2019, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
He was born September 20, 1946 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late Roe Grindstaff and the late Jessie Dula Grindstaff Ellison.
Robert was a 1964 graduate of Cranberry High School. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Robert was a house painter and a member of Whitehead Hill Bible Christian Church. He loved NASCAR Racing and was a Duke Basketball Fan.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Lynda Waycaster Grindstaff; a son, Brian Wayne Grindstaff; one grandson, Asher Wayne Grindstaff; his brother and sister-in-law, Frank Carson and Kay Grindstaff of Pennsylvania; one nephew, Frank "Bip" Grindstaff of Pennsylvania; and his sister-in-law, Brenda Waycaster of Murfreesboro, Tenn.
Funeral services for Robert Wayne Grindstaff will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Terry Dugger and Pastor Delaney Berry officiating. Interment will follow in the Captain Nelson Cemetery. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. The family would like to express a very special "Thank You" to the staff of the VA Hospice and doctors, nurses and staff of the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center for the excellent care he received. Military Honors will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard.

WATAUGA - Rev. Glenn L. Hoilman, 78, Watauga went home to be with his Lord, Sunday, May 13, 2018 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness.

A native of Burnsville, North Carolina, he was a son of the late Millard Filmore & Blonda Grindstaff Hoilman. He was a retired Mechanic. Rev. Hoilman had served as a pastor for over 42 years. He pastored Y Free Will Baptist Church for 30 years. He was a member of True Gospel Baptist Church, Elizabethton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Terry & Edward Hoilman and five sisters: Katie Hoilman, Mary Ann Hoilman, Pansy Richardson, Geneva Dawson and Cathy Sue Smith.

Survivors include his wife: Janette West Hoilman, a son & daughter-in-law: Dexter & Tammy Hoilman, Watauga, two daughters & sons-in-law: Connie & Frank Higgins, Elizabethton and Lisa & Donnie Bare, Watauga. His Grandchildren: Daniel Hoilman, Vanessa Hoilman, Gary Hoilman, Constance Ferguson, Jimmie Brown, Justin Brown, Madison Higgins, Devan Nelson, Benjamin Bare and Jonah Bare. His Great Grandchildren: Natalie Brown, Jacob Brown, Samuel Ferguson, Kenzie Harrison, and Emily Harrison. His Brothers: Gene Hoilman, Dennis Hoilman & Henry Hoilman. His Sisters: Linda Robinson and Glenda Roe. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dean Presnell and Dexter Hoilman officiating. David Buchanan, age 77, of Snow Creek Road in Bakersville, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2018 at his home.

Born on Aug. 3, 1941, in Avery County, he was the son of the late Robert and Judy Johnson Buchanan. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a Son: Curtis Buchanan; a Brother: Robert Buchanan, Jr.; and his Sisters: Diane Buchanan, Helen Hughes, and Glenda Lewis.

David was a member of the Snow Hill Baptist Church and was retired from the Mitchell County School System with twenty-four years of service. He loved spending time with his family and particularly his grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 48 years: Sue Willis Buchanan of the home; his Sons; David Buchanan and wife, Deanna of Bakersville, and Larry Buchanan of Belton, Mo.; six Grandchildren, including Mariah and Cameron Buchanan; his Sister: Etta Mae Jones and husband, Mack of Morganton; and his Brother: Milton Buchanan of Burnsville.

The funeral service honoring the life of David Buchanan was held at 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at the Snow Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev's. Dean Honeycutt and Harrison Honeycutt officiating. A time to support the family, share memories and receive friends took place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, at the church. Graveside services and interment were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2018, at the Snow Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.

Diane Lynn Buchanan, 63, of Morganton, NC died Monday, August 07, 2017. Born on January 12, 1954 in Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Buchanan and Judy Johnson Buchanan.

Diane was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who loved her family dearly. She was a member of Mountain View #1 Church. Diane was a true born again Christian who enjoyed going to church. Before becoming disabled she sang and witnessed for the Lord.

In addition to her parents, Diane was preceded in death by her sister, Glenda Buchanan Bartlett and brother, Robert Buchanan, Jr.

Diane is survived by her husband, Joe Buchanan; daughters, Felicia Nunez and husband, Nicholas and Crystal Carswell and husband, Paul; step-sons, Joe Buchanan, Jr. and wife, Lorie and Jeff Buchanan and wife, Rebecca; and five grandchildren.

Shirley Buchanan McIntosh, age 69, of Newland, passed away on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2020. A native of Avery County, she was a daughter of the late Clyde and Juanita Johnson Buchanan.

Shirley was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church. She loved being a caregiver, her family (especially her kids and grandkids) and evangelism.

Surviving is her Husband of 51 years: Boots McIntosh; Son: Chris McIntosh (Laura) of Newland; Daughter: Shannon Fannon (Stacy), also of Newland; Grandchildren: Jacob Fannon (Dakota McKee), Caleb Fannon (Ali), Levi McIntosh (Zoe Daniels) and Hannah McIntosh; Great-grandchildren: Murphie Haseltine and Charlie Fannon; Sisters: RoseMary Daniels and Nadine White, both of Squirrel Creek; and Brother: Duane Buchanan (Laura) of Pickens, SC. Several other extended family members also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Oak Grove Baptist Church. Pastors Ron Greene and Lee Harmon will officiate. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3:30 p.m. prior to the services. Burial will be private in the Ashley Cemetery.

Carroll Hamby, 61, of Roan Mountain, passed away Sunday, December 9, 2018, at home with family by his side.
He was preceded in death by his father, Claude Hamby, and a son, Brian Wesley Hamby.
Carroll is survived by his mother, Lucile Hamby; his wife, Peggy Whitson Hamby; three sons, Charlie Whitson (Lisa), Greg Whitson (Joey) and Carroll "Doodle" (Christy"); and five grandchildren, Randall, Skylar, Devin, Cody and Brian. He is also survived by nine brothers and one sister, Michael (Cindy), Frank (Kathy), Richard, Mark, Wayne (Melissa), Jay (Linda), Tina Hughes (Jude), Keith (Ann), Charlie (Beverly) and Joe; and many nieces and nephews.
Carroll was a loving, caring husband, dad, brother, uncle and friend. He loved his family gatherings and holidays.
He had just recently retired from Property Management of Sugar Mountain. He loved working on cars, but most of all he loved his family. Hambone you will truly be missed!!
Services for Carroll Hamby will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, December 12, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, Tenn. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., prior to the service. Interment will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 13, in the Hamby Family Cemetery.
