Civil War hero remembered - by David Colvin

In 1919, Enos Divilbliss (sic) (the name from her late third husband) came
to Humboldt, Kansas to marry the man that she had been corresponding with
for sometime. He was 82; she was 23.

The story began in Cook County Illinois where Justin O. Hottenstein was born
to Phillip and Elizabeth Hottenstein. He was one of six children. Justin
acquired a common school education and was raised on the farm.

In April of 1861, Hottenstein enlisted in the 20th Illinois Infantry. He
fought several major battles of the Civil War, including the battle at
Britan's Lane, in which he and his fellow Union troops were out numbered by
the Confederates 500 to 8000. Other battles he fought were at Shiloh
Corinth and Fort Donelson.

"His mother had five sons in the blue", says Mrs. Divilbliss.

"He was wounded on the battle field, and he was let lie there for five or six
days before he was picked up and then they drew a silk handkerchief back and
forth through him to get the dirt out," she explained.

After the wound healed, he returned to his unit and fought at Kennesaw
Mountain. He was captured at one time and later escaped. He was Honorably
Discharged on June 25, 1864 when the old wound began to bother him.

Hottenstein came to Kansas in 1867 and secured 80 acres of land five miles
east of Humboldt and married Enos, after a courtship by mail.

Enos Divilbliss was born in North Carolina,"...in a little place called
Beaver Dam, because the beavers cut all the trees down" she says. "The had
schools there but I didn't get to go."

"One day I wanted to go to school so bad. They were going to have a program
and they were going to have stick candy. My grandma told me if I got up and
did the wash I could go. Well, I got up and did the wash, but I didn't get
to go. I'll be darned if I didn't have to harrow buckwheat that day," she
remembers.

Mrs. Divelbliss remembers well her first impressions of Humboldt and her
husband, early in their marriage.

"Lord, I had never seen a grocery store in my life. I went to town one day.
I took chickens, eggs, and butter to town, you know..and I come back and he
said "What are we going to have for supper.' I said 'I don't know'. And he
said, didn't you get nothing.' I said no, I was never in a grocery store
before. We always raised what we ate."

Mrs. Divilbliss enjoys talking about her Civil War hero husband.

"He was a little man. He wasn't very tall. I weighed more than he did, but
he was a hard worker."

"I wasn't here very long and he bought me a car. He gave me two lessons and
he said I was as good as he was. We went to church and took the kids. I
drove around and got all of them I could get in the car."

"He was hard of hearing. when he was wounded it hurt his hearing. When I
came out here, I could talk to him just the way I talk to anybody, but
nobody else could do it. They said he would look at my mouth and tell what
I'm saying."

"He was a church goer too. We belonged to the Methodist church in Humboldt
and still do," she says.

Each month, Enos receives a pension from the government for her husband's
service in the civil War.

"Him and I had good times on the farm. He was good to me and I was good to
him."

Edith Isaacs Arnold, age 90, passed away Thursday, November 11th, 2010 at the Mountain City Care Center in Mountain City, TN. She was a native of Watauga County, NC and the daughter of the late Noah and Callie Stout Isaacs. She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church. Edith was a homemaker and enjoyed sewing, gardening and canning. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Orville Arnold in December 1999 and two daughters, Eva Ruth Arnold and Joyce Arnold Campbell.

Fannie Pauline Isaacs Dixon, 99, passed away at Lakebridge Health Care Center, Johnson City, on Thursday, January 22, 2009.

The daughter of the late Garfield Isaacs and Jessie Stout Isaacs Stansberry, she was known as Peg by family and friends.

In addition to her parents, Peg was preceded in death by her husband, Fred F. Dixon; sisters, Kathleen Isaacs Wright, Mildred Stansberry Friese and Vada Stansberry Ervin; brothers, Elcaney Isaacs, Ray Stansberry, James Stansberry and D.L. Stansberry.

Her survivors include a sister, Lucille Stansberry Plaster; a sister-in-law, Louise Greenwell Stansberry; several nieces and nephews; and an "adopted" daughter, Phoebe McInturff.

Her family would like to express their thanks to the nurses and staff of Lakebridge Health Care Center and Caris Hospice for their respect and care for Fannie (Peg) during her stay.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mildred Friese, 25, who died at Chicago last Sunday at 2:45 a.m. were held last Thursday afternoon at 1:30 at Pine Grove Baptist Church at Neva. The pastor and Rev. Roby Stout officiated. Burial was in the Happy Valley Memorial Park. Mrs. Friese, a native of Johnson County, had made her home in Chicago for about a year before her death. She was a member of the Pine Grove Church. Survivors include her husband, Lt. Robert Friese of Chicago; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Stansbury of Jackson, O.; one son, Robert, Jr.; four brothers, D. L. Bunting and Ina Stout Bunting. She was a member of Bakers Gap Baptist Church and she enjoyed cooking. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas, three sisters: Virginia Snyder, Opal Susi and Kathleen Bunton and five brothers: Marshall, Fred, Barton, Jim and Doran.

Doran was born on January 11, 1931 to the late Ott and Ina Bunting. In addition to his parents, Doran was also preceded in death by his sisters; Opal, Virginia, and Kathleen. As well as his brothers; Fred, Marshal, Jim and Barton.

Those left to cherish Doran's memory include; his wife, Vida Snyder Bunting. Son; Doug Norris. Granddaughter; Heather Norris. Sisters; Margie Jinolfi, and Shirley Bunting. His brothers; Harold Bunting and Mack Bunting. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Doran served as a Staff Sargent in the US Air Force for 4 years. He was a member of Bakers Gap Baptist Church. Doran was an avid Farmer. He was a member of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge #679.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7:00 P.M Thursday, November 30, 2017 at the, Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel with Dennis Peterson and James Richardson officiating. Eulogy by: Bryant Collins. Visitation will be 6 P.M until 7 P.M prior to the funeral service. Graveside services will be on Friday December 1, 2017 at 10:30 A.M Military Honors accorded by the Johnson County Honor Guard will follow the funeral service. As well as Masonic Rites.

KINGSPORT – James Walter Bunting, 75, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2009, at his residence after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Mountain City on December 3, 1933, to the late Ott and Ina Bunting. He served two years in the U.S. Army. Before his retirement in 1988, he was employed in supervision with the Regional Transit Authority in Cleveland, Ohio.

He was an active member of First Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and on various committees. Mr. Bunting was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class. He had volunteered for several years with Holston Habitat for Humanity, where he served on the Executive Board for a number of years as the Site Selection Chairman. Mr. Bunting also worked for fourteen years at the Habitat Resale Store.

He was an avid golfer and a gardener who loved sharing his garden with his friends. Mr. Bunting will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends as one who always had a warm smile and a big heart.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Barton Bunting; and three sisters, Virginia Snyder, Opal Susi and Kathleen Bunton.

Ruth was a Johnson County native where she had lived all her life. She was the daughter of the late Daniel and Lillie Shull Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers: Don Grindstaff, Robert Grindstaff and A.D. Grindstaff; and a sister, Hazel G. Jones.

She was a Graduate of Johnson County High School and East Tennessee State University; she taught school in Johnson County for 45 years and was a member of the Retired Teachers Association of Johnson County. She was active in the Neva Elementary School PTA.

Ruth enjoyed being outside and working in her garden and flowers and she also loved quilting and sewing. She was a member of the Pine Grove Baptist Church, where she at one time taught the primary Sunday school class.

Survivors: one sister, Rosa Ward, Mountain City, Tennessee; several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services for Ms. Ruth Grindstaff will be conducted on Sunday, January 6th, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. from the Pine Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Michael Penley, Rev Carl Swift, Rev. Rick Thomason and Dr. Dan Little officiating. Music will be under the direction of Roy Roach and Patty Watson.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the funeral service.

Graveside service and burial will follow in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. What Granny loved most was working in her vegetable garden and canning the fruits of her labor, milking the cows, and just being outside. Granny loved watching game shows. She enjoyed playing checkers, reading her Bible, ice cream, and the smell of roses, which were her favorite flower.

Services for Rosa will be held at 2pm on Friday, March 29, 2019, at Pine Grove Baptist Church in Neva, TN. The family will receive friends from 12:30pm – 2pm prior to the service. Internment will follow services at Mast Cemetery. Rev. Mike Penley will officiate the services.

MOUNTAIN CITY — Mrs. Emily G. Millsaps, age 89, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

She was born on May 27, 1926 to the late James William and Lucinda Stout Grindstaff.

In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Millsaps; a son, Richard "Rick" Millsaps; and brother, Florian Grindstaff.

Emily was an amazing lady who was very special to everyone who knew her. She touched many young lives in Johnson County, Tennessee, as indicated by her 51+ years in education. Seeing those young children walk through the doorway into her classroom was all she needed to jump into action! She loved them dearly and each child knew it, no matter their age! Emily was a strong Christian and knew that God had blessed her with many gifts. She made it a habit to share these gifts with those she encountered each day. A strong determination to succeed afforded her opportunities that many might have thought could never be accomplished. Emily achieved many wonderful things throughout her years, being president of this civic group or that church group, but perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments occurred in 1982 when she was elected as the first female Commissioner in Johnson County. Emily retained that position for 30 years.

It seems that Emily's greatest joy, besides her family, was dedicating her time and talents to her church and her community. She was ALWAYS making a list to buy food for some civic event or cooking turkeys or chicken casseroles to serve at a community meal. She was ALWAYS serving and offering her 'service with a smile' to everyone she met.....and that smile!!! It would melt the heart of anyone who knew her and would draw strangers to her. It seems like she taught everyone in the county in one way or the other-----you, your children, your grandchildren, maybe even your great-grandchildren. She let God's love flow through her and His light gave her a purpose to share and give. Oh, that we all would be like that!! Our hearts may be full of sadness, but we must never forget this grand woman, the one who touched our lives so dearly. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mountain City, Maple Chapter #79 Order of the Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary.

Emily is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Allen Moody; grandsons, Christopher Moody (Jennifer) and Aaron Moody (Betsy); great grandchild, Maxton Reese Moody; several cousins, three nieces and one nephew and many, many special friends, too numerous to name each of you.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the First Baptist Church. Eastern Star service will follow at 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Ricky Campbell to officiate. Guest speaker will be Mr. John Payne. Special music will be provided by Glenda Gray, Jack Proffitt and Kody Norris.

MOUNTAIN CITY - Leta Grindstaff Lewis, age 96, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, August 25, 2017 at Holston Valley Hospice, Kingsport, Tennessee.

She was born on August 3, 1921 to the late Daniel and Ada Proffitt Grindstaff. In addition to her parents, Leta was preceeded in death by her husband of 74 years, Herbert Lewis, who passed away November 12, 2016; brothers: Edward Grindstaff of Mountain City and Thomas Grindstaff of Lexington, NC; sisters: Myrtle Forrester and Lena Garland, both of Mountain City and son-in-law, Jim Dugger of Kingsport.

Leta was a graduate of Watauga Academy in Old Butler and the oldest member of Midway Baptist Church of Butler, Tennessee.

LEXINGTON, N.C. — Thomas F. Grindstaff, 80, of Brian Center Nursing Home, formerly of Hunter’s Way, died Tuesday morning in the Brian Center Nursing Home after declining health. Mr. Grindstaff was born in Johnson County, TN, on February 9, 1924, to Daniel Grindstaff and Ada Proffitt Grindstaff. Before retiring, he was an auto dealer at Johnson Motor Company and Grindstaff Chevrolet in Mountain City, TN. He was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church in Butler, TN. His wife, Thelma Hammons Grindstaff, and sister, Lena Garland, preceded him in death. Survivors include his daughters: Kathy Hinkle and husband, Davis, of Lexington, and Diana Hazelwood, of Marion, Va.; a grandson, Matthew Thomas Hinkle, of Lexington; one granddaughter; a brother, Edward Grindstaff, of Mountain City, TN; sisters: Myrtle Forrester and Leta Lewis, both of Mountain City, TN; a niece, Evelyn Dugger, of Kingsport, TN. Allen L. Snyder, 82, of 224 Allen Snyder Ln, Mountain City, Tennessee, surrounded by his family, passed away in his home on Monday December 24, 2018. Allen was born in Butler, TN on July 1, 1936, to Paul H. and Virginia Bunting Snyder. Allen is preceded in death by his parents and a special niece Jennifer Main.



Allen is a Johnson County native and graduate of Johnson County High School. After graduation, Allen went into the US Army. After discharge, Allen went to Lees-McRae College and Appalachian State University, playing football for both the Bobcats and the Mountaineers. After graduating from college, Allen returned to Johnson County where he was a teacher, coach, and administrator for 30 years. Allen also enjoyed working the land and farming, which he had plenty of time to do after he retired from teaching. When Allen was not working, he enjoyed watching Tennessee Vols sports and spending time with his grandchildren.

Those left to remember Allen are his loving wife of 57 years, Lennis Trivette Snyder; daughter Tracy Arrington and husband Pride of Glade Springs, VA; son Kent Snyder and wife Kelly of Dalton, GA; sister Mary Ann Jacobs of Butler, TN; brother John Snyder of Boone, NC; grandchildren Hannah Snyder, Mollie Snyder, Annie Kate Sapp and husband Jake, Kiley and "Lil" Pride Arrington; several nieces and nephews. Audrey Camilla Reece, age 75, went to be with the Lord on February 7, 2022. Audrey was born on April 21, 1946 to the late Charles and Suma Reece. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by several aunts, uncles, and nephew, Michael Reece.

Audrey was an avid reader and book collector. She was also a big Elvis Presley fan and collector of Elvis memorabilia. She was a great sister and wonderful aunt. Audrey was employed as a secretary for Lewis May, a former attorney and then district attorney general. Afterward she worked for over 40 years for the Johnson County Board of Education. She dearly loved her church, Valley View United Methodist Church.

Michael Wayne Reece, age 47, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, July 14, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Banner Elk, North Carolina on May 28, 1971 to Terry Reece and Sue Michael Reece Adkins. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Fred and Georgie Michael and paternal grandparents, Charles and Suma Reece.

Michael loved the outdoors and especially enjoyed animals, flowers and gardening. He also enjoyed woodworking. Michael enjoyed sports but especially liked football.He was a member of Corinth Baptist Church and loved his Lord and Savior dearly. He was a loving, caring person with a big heart and will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish his memories include his mother, Sue Reece Adkins, father, Terry Reece, brother, Craig Reece, special nephew, Caleb Reece, several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
