MRS. NANNIE ALLEN
Mrs. Nannie Allen, 58, prominent resident of the Siam section, and a member of one of the most prominent families of Carter County, died this morning at 6 o'clock, after a week's illness.
Mrs. Allen was born September 14, 1877, the daughter of the late Robert and Eva Treadway of Watauga Valley. She was married to W. B. Allen of Siam in 1899, moving to the Siam section, where she has since resided.
She was a life-long member of the Baptist church, having joined the Watauga Valley Baptist Church at an early age.
Surviving are four daughters, Misses Mary, Maude, Olive and Bernice Allen; three sons, Will and John, both of Siam, and Frank Allen of Bristol, Tenn.; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Percy of Elizabethton, Misses Lena and Ethel Treadway, both of Watauga Valley; two brothers, Charles and Hicks Treadway, both of Watauga Valley.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Baptist church at Siam Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, the Rev. C. H. Hopkins, pastor, officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. L. Bowden of Elizabethton, the Rev. Roscoe C. Smith of Erwin and the Rev. S. O. Pinkerton of Bluff City. Music will be in charge of Mrs. C. L. Bowden. Burial will be in the cemetery near the church.

… 64, Rte. 1, Mountain City, died Tuesday night at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Elizabethton, after a short illness. He was the son of the late Robert and Evelyn Crumley Treadway. He had been a schoolteacher in Carter and Johnson counties.
Treadway was a retired postal employee, having served in the post office in Elizabethton for 23 years. He was a life-long resident of Carter County, having lived in the Watauga Valley community until moving to Mountain City recently.
Survivors include the widow Mrs. Josie Buckles Treadway; one son, Glenn of Knoxville; seven grandchildren, all of Knoxville; one brother, Charles B. Treadway of Watauga Valley; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie T. Percy of Elizabethton, Lena and Ethel Treadway of Watauga Valley, and several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Virginia “Jean” Crumley McQueen, age 97, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 13, 2021 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Virginia was born in Carter County to the late Robert and Ida Campbell Crumley. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Ivan Wilson McQueen in 2017; a daughter, Brenda Diane Nave; and her brothers and sisters – she was the last one of the Crumley children.

Virginia was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ and enjoyed attending the Elizabethton Twin baseball games, gardening and visiting Watauga Lake.

Those left to cherish Virginia’s memory include her son, Glenn “Skip” McQueen of Johnson City; her grandson, Richard Ryan McQueen and wife Helen of Odessa, FL; one great granddaughter, Lilah McQueen; and several nieces, nephews, friends and church family also survive.

A graveside service to honor Virginia’s life will be conducted at 12:00 PM on Tuesday, August 17, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Eddy Craft and Mr. Todd Houston officiating. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

ELIZABETHTON - Mrs. Frances "Bobbie" Shouse, age 91, 129 Ruby Avenue, Elizabethton, TN passed away Friday, August 25, 2017 in Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Robert T. and Ida Campbell Crumley. Mrs. Shouse was a LPN who worked in a private duty setting at St. Elizabeth Hospital and at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was one of the first nurses to work in the ICU and CCU units at the hospital. Mrs. Shouse began her career in nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital and ended her time there at Ivy Hall Nursing Home when she passed. She was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ. Mrs. Shouse enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading and spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joe B. Shouse; sisters, Dorothy Vance, Mary Collins, Lela Kirk, Edna Fair and Hildred Hodge and brothers, Gilbert Crumley, Paul Crumley, Joe Crumley and George Crumley. Those left to cherish her memory include a daughter, Judy Boone and husband Dean, Elizabethton; sons, David Shouse and wife Linda and Mike Shouse and wife Debbie, all of Elizabethton; grandchildren, Donna Harrell and husband Jim, Gena Byrd and husband Anthony, David Shouse Jr. and wife Stephani and Michael J. Shouse and wife Ashley; great-grandchildren, Devin Byrd, Tiffani Shouse, Dalton Shouse, Danika Byrd and Hadley Shouse; sisters, Virginia "Jean" McQueen and husband Ivan, Elizabethton and Joyce Tiffany, Durham, NC and a sister-in-law, Jackie Crumley. A service to honor the life of Mrs. Frances "Bobbie" Shouse will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Monday, August 28, 2017 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Eddy Craft, minister officiating. Mr. Michael J. Shouse will give the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of Linda Shouse, soloist and Cathy Wilson, pianist. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Monday prior to the service or at the residence of her daughter, Judy Boone, at any time.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, August 29, 2017 in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Michael J. Jody Price, 94, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2019, in Tucson, Ariz. She was the youngest child of Joel Carriger Crumley and Mary Ada Larkin Crumley. She was predeceased in 2012 by her husband of 60 years, FBI Special Agent James W. Price.
Jody grew up in Elizabethton and attended ETSU. Upon graduation, she worked for the TVA for five years. In 1951, she married Jim Price whom she'd known for many years. Marrying an FBI agent meant a life of transfers and moves. They first lived in Texas and then Indianapolis, Ind., where their three daughters were born. Then they were transferred to Chicago and finally to El Centro, Calif., a small office out of the San Diego Field Office. Jim retired from the Bureau in 1975.
The family stayed busy traveling throughout California and Baja, Mexico, and taking summer road trips back to Elizabethton. As their girls grew up and moved away, Jody and Jim lived in Yuma, Ariz., and Henderson, Nev., before moving to Tucson in 2007.
Jody was well known as an excellent cook and hostess as well as an accomplished pianist and seamstress. No matter where they lived, Jody made a house a home. She also assisted Jim in building a beach house in Baja which the family enjoyed for many years. She never lost her soft southern accent and was always proud of her East Tennessee heritage.
Jody is survived by her three daughters, Patty Marko and Susan Carr of Santa Fe, N.M., and Terry Burden of Tucson, Ariz. She is also survived by her niece, Nancy Crumley of Elizabethton. She has two grandsons, James and Travis Price.
A small family gathering will be held when she is interred with her husband at Santa Fe National Cemetery.

Reverend Herman Rhea Crumley, 84, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, February 10, 2021, at his residence. Herman was a native of Carter County and a son of the late Eston and Ethel Crumley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Worley Crumley and Kenneth Crumley; one sister, Grace Crumley; and one nephew, Jerry Crumley.
Herman was a member of Doe River Baptist Church, where he served as an Assistant Pastor and Sunday School Teacher. He also supplied for the Watauga Baptist Association. Herman retired from East Tennessee State University. He was a wonderful husband and dad and loved to witness to people about the Lord.
Herman also enjoyed riding motorcycles, collecting old cars, meal times and spending time with his family — especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Herman is survived by his wife, Charlotte Calloway Crumley, of the home; three daughters and sons-in-law, Marcella and Murrel Mullins of Elizabethton, Betty and Tim Mason of Knoxville and Misty Crowe (Billy Hilton) and special grandchildren, Madison and Mariah Crowe of Elizabethton; one son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Lynn Crumley and wife Michelle of Butler; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two nieces; and his sisters-in-law, Bonnie Crumley of South Carolina and Ina Mae Campbell of Elizabethton.
A service to celebrate and honor the life of Reverend Herman Rhea Crumley will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 13, at Doe River Baptist Church with Reverend Daniel Fink and Reverend Jim Hawk officiating. Music will be under the direction of Dale Williams, Joey Cole and Teresa Bowers, pianist. The family will receive friends at the church from 2 until 3 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 14, in the Wilson Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Herman’s grandchildren.

Eileen V. Estep, 87, of Elizabethton, loving mother and sweetest Granny, passed away Saturday, August 18, 2018.
A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Ida Taylor. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnson Estep, June 22, 1993; a son, Lester Estep; four step-children, who she loved and treated like her own, Leonard, Vernon, Edward Estep and Anna Mae Burgess; her sisters, Sallie Estep, Wilma Moffitt, Clara Cole, Martha Peters, Mary Lipps and Eva Lipps; and one brother, Paul Davis.
Mrs. Estep loved to cook and crochet. She was of the Baptist faith.
She is survived by a daughter, Burless Campbell; her grandchildren, Lisa Townsend (Jimmy), Amy Riddle (TJ), Hannah Estep and Daniel Estep; one great-granddaughter, Lexi, who was her pride and joy; her special step-grandchildren, Marvin Estep, Melvin Estep, Debbie Davis, Marlene Steffey and Ruth Ann Richardson; her daughters-in-law, Loretta Estep, Shin Estep and Teresa Estep; one sister, Nora Grace; one brother, Lee Taylor Jr.; and her special friend, Donna Townsend. Many other step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services for Eileen V. Estep will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 21, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hunter Greene officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 22, in the Taylor Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be James Estep Jr., Joe Estep, Melvin Estep, Daniel Estep, Terry Taylor, Jeff Taylor, Jimmy Townsend and TJ Riddle. ELIZABETHTON - Junior Lee Taylor, 88, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2023 in the Lakebridge Health Center. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Levi & Ida Estep Taylor. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Junior was a retired Truck Driver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Nila Arnold Taylor who passed away January 23, 2012, by a half-brother, Paul Davis and by seven sisters: Eileen Estep, Sally Estep, Wilma Moffitt, Clara Cole, Martha Peters, Mary Lipps and Eva Lipps.

Survivors include three children: Inez Taylor, Terry Taylor and Jeff Taylor. One granddaughter: Sara Goodwin. One sister: Nora Moffitt. Several nieces and nephews including a special niece: Burless Estep.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Garland Cemetery with Mr. Harry “Buddy” Arnold officiating. Active Pallbearers will be David Grindstaff, Denver Campbell, Brian Arnold, Wayne Sams, Eddie Spears and Joe Estep. ELIZABETHTON — William J. "Bill" Allen, 97, Elizabethton, passed away Thursday, February 2, 2012, in the Life Care Center of Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late William Ben and Nancy Jane Treadway Allen.

He was a retired Dairy Farmer having operated the Allen Dairy farm for 47 years. He was a member of the Carter County Soil conservation District, The Dairymen's Incorporated and the East Tennessee Horseman Association.

Mr. Allen was a member of the Siam Baptist Church and the Upper Room Sunday School Class.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, June Reo Grindstaff Allen, November 4, 2008; by a Great Grandson: Austin Allen; Four Sisters: Mary Nave, Maude Coley, Olive Allen and Bernice Morrell; and Two Brothers: Frank and John T. Allen.

Survivors include Three Daughters: Violette Parker, Albuquerque, New Mexico, Anne VanHuss and Marilyn "Mary" Elliott and husband, Ray, all of Elizabethton; Two Sons & Daughters-in-Law: Charles H. & Myra Allen and William John & Norine Allen, all of Elizabethton; 12 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; several nieces, nephews & Cousins.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Siam Baptist Church with the Rev. Burl Sluder and Rev. Dennis Wilson officiating.

Interment will follow in the Nave Cemetery with the Rev. Tyler Eiland officiating. Music will be provided by Mr. Bill Anderson. Active Pallbearers will be: Guy Allen, Garland Allen, Jamie Allen, Jordan Elliott, Scott Elliott, Steven Parker, Allen Parker, Bob Campbell, Ronnie Hazelwood and Lindsey Rash. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Ben Whitehead, Ray Elliott, Ben Allen, Allen Goodwin, Charles "Blue" Treadway, Bill Anderson and his Church Family.

The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the Nurses & CNAs of Life Care Center and Dr. Vivian Clark.

TREADWAY BOY DIES AT HOME; FUNERAL TODAY
Raymond Treadway, aged 21, died at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Hicks Treadway, Sunday morning at 2 a.m. after a lingering illness.
Survivors are father and mother, and one brother, Glenn Treadway this morning at 10 a.m., with the Rev. E. E. Hazlewood officiating. Interment will be in the Hunter Cemetery.

ELIZABETHTON — Brenda McQueen Nave, age 66, of Elizabethton, passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2015, at the Sycamore Shoals Hospital, following a brief illness.

Brenda was a native of Carter County and was the daughter of Ivan W. McQueen and Virginia Crumley McQueen.

Brenda was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edward "Eddy" Nave; and one sister-in-law, Judy Nave.

Brenda graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1966, where she was a member of the Betsy Band, then went on to earn her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from ETSU. She retired from Keenburg Elementary School in the year 2000, after 30 years of service as a 2nd grade teacher.

She was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish her memory, include her mother and father, Ivan and Virginia McQueen, of Elizabethton; one brother, Glenn "Skip" McQueen, of Johnson City; one special nephew, Richard Ryan McQueen and wife Helen, of Odessa, FL; one great great niece, Lilah McQueen, also of Odessa, FL; her mother-in-law, Madge Nave, of Mountain City; and one sister-in-law, Mary Nave, also of Mountain City.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Brenda McQueen Nave will be conducted at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 17, 2015, in the Chapel of Peace of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Mr. Roby Ellis and Mr. Eddy Craft, ministers, officiating.

The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Thursday.

The graveside service will follow in the Mountain View Cemetery in Mountain City, Tennessee.

James Millard "J.M." Peters, 80, of Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Pine Ridge Care Center after a brief illness.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Stacy and Martha Elizabeth Taylor Peters.
J.M. was retired from Inland Container after 37 years of service. He loved to hunt and fish and work in his garden. He was a member of Moore's Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant sister and a daughter, Debbie Kaye Peters Ensor.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Patsy Burrow Peters, a son, James L. "Jamie" Peters, Elizabethton, a grandson, Ryan Lee Peters, a granddaughter, Savannah Gobble, a great-grandson, J.B. Highsmith, and daughter-in-law, Lena M. Peters, all of Hampton.
Funeral services for James Millard "J.M." Peters will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 14, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Phillips and the Rev. Bobby Burrow officiating. Rev. Lloyd Benson Estep, 81, Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord Saturday, February 2, 2013, at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Roy Estep and Eva Taylor Estep Lipps. He served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict. Rev. Estep was a Minister in the Free Will Baptist Church, having pastored churches in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and also at Lyons Chapel Free Will Baptist Church. He also had worked for the United States Forrest Service and was a roofer and Carpenter.
Rev. Estep was a member of the Tiger Creek First Free Will Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Ruth Grindstaff and Shirley Williams; and his Step-Father: Webster Lipps.

Lester R. Estep, age 65, SFC (Retired), Johnson City, passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2015, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

He served in the United States Army for 23 years. He served during the Vietnam Era.

He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith.

Lester was preceded in death by his father: Johnson Estep, Three Brothers: Leonard, Vernon & Edward Estep and One Sister: Anna Mae Burgess.

Survivors include his wife: Hae-Kyong Shin Estep; one Daughter, Hannah Estep; one Son, Daniel Estep; his Mother, Eileen Taylor Estep; one Sister, Burless Campbell; several nieces & nephews.

ELIZABETHTON — Charles "Blue" Treadway, 69, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, April 26, 2016, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Robert & Grace Estep Treadway. Blue was a 1964 graduate of Unaka High School. He had served in the Tennessee National Guard for 10 years. He was retired in Supervision at North American Rayon Corporation.

He was member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238, Member of Jericho Shrine Temple. He was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was a member of the Jericho Oriental Band. He was also a farmer. He was of the Baptist Faith and a former member of Hunter First Baptist Church. Blue was an avid fisherman.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Carol Hodge Treadway; two daughters and their spouses, Carrie and Johnnie Wilson, Hampton and Kellee and Brandon Blevins, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Kaylee Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Eli Blevins and Clayton Blevins; three sisters, Margaret Treadway, Betty Jones and Patsy Trivette all of Elizabethton; several nieces, nephews and great nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Friday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Dr. Alan King officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 30, 2016, in the Caldwell Springs Cemetery.

Mrs. Kane was retired from Mapes Piano String Company and was a member of First United Methodist Church.
