JOHNSON CITY - Roxie Dempsey, 91 of Johnson City ,went home to be with her Lord, her beloved husband and the family she missed so much on Friday afternoon from Cornerstone Village.

She was born in Hampton, TN to James Carter Carver and Hettie Elzora Clark Carver. Roxie worked for North American Rayon Corporation for 25 years. She loved her family, music, singing, cooking, gardening and quilting by hand. Roxie was a pastor's wife, and loved her Lord and loved going to church.

In addition to her parents, Roxie was preceded in death by her husband, Pastor Edmond Lee Dempsey; brother's Robert, Ralph, Dayton and Frank Carver; sister's Violet Carver, Oleta Gouge and Alma Campbell; Step-daughter, Patricia Satterfield and Barbara Dempsey; grandson, Russell Satterfield.

Survivors include a daughter, Zodie Dempsey; one granddaughter, P.J. Nachman; two great granddaughters, Julie Satterfield, U.S Air Force, Korea, and Kimberly Satterfield, Ft. Lauderdale, Fl; one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Satterfield; two great great grandsons, Dean and Ethan Satterfield; one sister, Lena Clark, Adrian, MI. Several nieces, nephews and sisters-in-law also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Dempsey will be condcucted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, January 11, 2017 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home with Elder Gene Kiger officiating. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 2:00 P.M. in the East Parlor of the funeral home.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted following the funeral service at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

JOHNSON CITY - Shirley M. Bowser, 85, Johnson City, died Friday, May 28, 2021, at Franklin Woods Community Hospital, following a brief illness.

Shirley was a native of Johnson City, and a former resident of Florida and Nashville prior to her return home. She was a daughter of the late Albert and Virgie Carver Miller.

Shirley received her B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State College School of Nursing, then worked as a Registered Nurse.

She formerly attended East Unaka Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Jack Bowser, in 2000, two granddaughters, Cassie and Callie, one sister, Ruth, four brothers, Paris, Blain, Jack and Earl Miller.

She is survived by four children, Rebecca Rowe and husband Brian, Johnson City, Tammy Pyatte and husband Jeff, Charleston, SC, Cathy LaFrance and husband Gary, Jacksonville, FL, Kimberly Bowser, Smyrna; one brother, David Miller and wife Virginia, Belleview, FL; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The graveside service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held Friday, June 25, 2021, at 2:00 P.M., in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Inurnment will follow.

Robert E. "Buck" Carver, 81, of Jonesborough, passed away on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

He was a native of Washington County, son of the late Charlie Erwin and Mary Ingram Carver.

Buck was of Baptist faith.

He served his country in the Korean War in the United States Marine Corps.

Buck was a truck driver and loved trucking. He was an avid fisherman.

In addition to his parents, his brother Sam Carver preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Volena Bradford Carver of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Steven Carver of the home, Chris and Summer Carver of Jonesborough; a sister and brother-in-law, Alice M. and Phil Dalton of Johnson City; three grandchildren, Logan Austin Carver, Chandler Carver and Ashleigh Carver; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 10, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Dogwood Chapel of the Morris-Baker Funeral Home.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. under the direction of Minister Pete Booher. A committal service is scheduled for Friday, September 11, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at the Washington County Memory Gardens.

A procession will leave Morris-Baker to the cemetery at 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Active pallbearers will be: Michael Bradford, Chris Carver, Phillip Dalton, Steve Carver, David Peters and Logan Carver. Honorary pallbearers will be: Chandler Carver, Chuck Mathes, Dennis Bradford, J. C. Bradford, Jim Bradford, Dean Gregory and Scott Ingram.

Juanita Heaton Miller, 92, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Friday, August 23, 2019, at her residence surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late Clifford and Pearl Carver Heaton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ford Miller; a sister, Patsy Winters; and two brothers, Roy Heaton and Ray Heaton.
Juanita was a devoted wife, loving mother and mamaw. She was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed cooking, cleaning and caring for her family.
Those left to cherish Juanita's memory include a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Randy Caraway of Roan Mountain; a son, Roger Miller, of the home; her grandchildren, Courtney and CPO Jeremy Clipse, USCG, of Williamsburg, Va., Matthew and Rosy Caraway, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Mark Miller, Nashville, Tenn.; and her great-grandchildren, Arielle Clipse, Lucas Clipse, Neyland Caraway and Kyla-Rose Caraway. She is also survived by several very special nieces, nephews and cousins; special friends and long-time neighbors, Betty and Delaney Berry and Charles Jones; and a dear lifelong friend, Onza Johnson.
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, August 26, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Minister Delaney Berry and Pastor Tim Hughes officiating. Patsy Winters, 75, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 7, 2017, from The Waters of Roan Highlands. Patsy was a native of Roan Mountain and the daughter of the late Clifford and Pearl Heaton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, John Winters, and two brothers, Roy and Ray Heaton.
Pasty retired from Tulsa Dental and had also worked for U.S. Textile, I.R.C., and was currently working at the Whiteway Grill in Roan Mountain. She was a loving mother and grandmother, outgoing and energetic, and was above all a loving and devoted wife.
Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Angela Miller and husband Eddie of Roan Mountain; her son, Charles Keith Stout and wife Barbara Ann of Roan Mountain; two sisters, Juanita Miller of Roan Mountain and Barbara McCoury of Roan Mountain; three granddaughters, Patsy Adkins, Pam Adkins and Ronnie Danielle Miller, all of Roan Mountain; her first husband and lifelong friend, Charlie Stout of Hampton; a special step-grandson, David Miller of Roan Mountain; a special friend, Patsy Perkins of Roan Mountain; her friend and caregiver, Linda Potter of Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

John Winters, 79, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with his Lord Friday, May 21, 2010 at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Ed and Carrie Shell Winters. He was a former employee of the Carter County Sheriffs Department. He was of the Baptist faith and Mr. Winters was a U.S. Army Veteran of the Korean Conflict. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Mr. Winters is survived by his wife of thirty-eight years, Patsy Heaton Winters of the home; a daughter and her fiancé, Angela Adkins and Eddie Miller, both of Roan Mountain; one son and daughter-in-law, Keith and Ann Stout, Roan Mountain; three special grand-daughters; Patsy Adkins, Pam Adkins, and Little Ronnie Miller all of Roan Mountain; three sisters and one brother-in-law; Mary Grace Harmon, Boone, NC; Louella and Tate Whittington, Elizabethton; Ruth Fletchers, Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mr. Winters will be conducted at 8:00 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2010 at the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain with Rev. Keith Gwyn officiating. HAMPTON - Christine C. Cook, age 93, of Hampton, Tennessee went home to be the Lord on Tuesday, February 21, 2023 at Signature Health and Rehabilitation Center of Elizabethton. Christine was born in Carter County to the late Herve and Earlene (Franklin) Carver. In addition to her parents, Christine was also preceded in death by her husband, Charles “Ed” Cook; a son, Michael Cook; a sister, Frances Spain; and two brothers, Herve Carver, Jr. and Norman Carver.

Christine graduated from Hampton High School in 1946 as valedictorian. She retired from Empire Furniture Company of Johnson City, where she worked for 32 years. She was a member of Rittertown Baptist Church.

Christine is survived by one daughter, Sylvia Jean Potter and husband Brookie of Elizabethton; one son, William Cook of Johnson City; six grandchildren: Charles Potter, Tracey Perez, Teresa Potter, William Cook II, Rebecca Olds, and Dawn Cook; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

A celebration of Christine’s life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday, February 23, 2023 in the Rittertown Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Stout and Reverend Dean Smith officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Thomas Little. The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM in the church prior to the service on Thursday or at the home of her daughter, Jean Potter, at other times.

ELIZABETHTON - Evelyn Harris Hinkle, 80 of Elizabethton died on Monday, December 12, 2022 at her residence. She was a native of Johnson City, daughter of the late Hubert and Regina Carver Harris.

Evelyn was a supervising RN at the Johnson City Medical Center for many years.

She attended the East Side Free Will Baptist Church.

Evelyn enjoyed her flower garden and taking care of her cats Precious and Charlie.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Larry Hinkle; a son, Brian Kirk Hinkle; a grandson, Ryan Hinkle; three brothers and a sister.

Roma Jean Mathes, age 81, of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Tolley and Goldie Carver Hall and was born on August 14, 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Gene Mathes; one son, John Paul Mathes and her step-father, Luther Hall.

Roma Jean was a devoted wife, mother and nanny. She was a determined woman of faith and was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. She enjoyed watching college basketball, especially Duke and cooking for her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include three children, Debbie Bunton and husband Jimmy, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and girlfriend Debbie Buckles all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, April Fox and husband Mark of Vass, NC, J.P. JOHNSON CITY - Benny Robert Carver, Johnson City went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, February 8, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was a native of Johnson City and was a son of the late Reece Carver Sr. and Helen Wiley Carver. Benny was a very loving tender hearted, compassionate and caring husband, brother, father, grandfather, son, uncle and friend. He loved his wife, Barbara of 36 years with all of his heart. Benny also loved his dogs, Miley and Peaches. He loved to build hot rods and going to car shows. He would do anything for anybody. Benny retired from Whites Foods, Jonesborough TN and Price Less Foods Kingsport, TN. After retirement he started to work for Dealers Auto Auction, a job he loved very much. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Maggie Wiley.

Kenneth Vaughn Hardin, 79, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.
Mr. Hardin worked at Holston Defense from November of 1961 to September 1997 with 30 years of perfect attendance. He was a fast pitch softball pitcher from the early 1960's through the 1970's for several teams.
Mr. Hardin and his wife owned and operated their family business, Ken's Fashions, for many years. He was a member of Siam Baptist Church but attended Lynn Valley Baptist Church. He was known as "Pappaw" to his grandchildren and great-grandchildren whom he loved so much.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce E. Bullock Hardin; parents, Robert and Bertie Hardin; daughter, Lisa Ellen Hardin; and granddaughter, Megan Elizabeth Holly.
He is survived by his children, Sharon Edwards and her husband, Gary, Kenny Hardin and his wife, Tammy, and Angie Holly and her husband, Billy; brother, Ira Dean Hardin; step-brother, R.L. Gobble; grandchildren, Stephanie Garland and her husband, Timmy, Korey Hardin, Bethany Ingram and her husband, Alex, and Lucas Holly; great-grandchildren, Colby Garland and Cambrie Ingram; and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Hardin will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at Lynn Valley Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until the service hour. Samuel “Sam” Ray Heaton, 64, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Monday, April 25, 2022, in Roan Mountain. Sam was born in Elizabethton to the late Bobby Ray Heaton and Mary Roberta Winters Strickland.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, John Strickland.
Sam was an employee of Snap-on Tools of Elizabethton for 16 years and was a very hard worker. Above all he cherished his family and was a caring and wonderful father, laid back and very intelligent. Sam was of the Baptist faith and enjoyed listening to ’70s rock music with his daughter and watching Richard Petty during his NASCAR career, Dallas Cowboys and watching wrestling with his son.
Those left to cherish Sam’s memory include his wife of 25 years, Sharon (Ward) Heaton, of the home; his beloved children, Emily and Evan Heaton, both of Roan Mountain; and two brothers, Steve Heaton of Roan Mountain and Andrew (Amanda) Strickland of Elk Park, N.C.

HAMPTON - John Paul, age 60, and wife, Robin Renee Sells Mathes, age 47, Hampton, Tn. passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at Watauga Lake. They were camping when the storm came through.

Robin had lived in Georgia for several years but was a native of Bristol, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Ringgold, Georgia High School. She was associated with her husband in the operation of The Hamptons Camp Ground. Robin and John Paul loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and their family. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl T. Sells, Sr. & Mayme Ruth Sells, T.G. & Vivian Gibson Hickman; her Uncles, Samuel (Sam) David Sells and Marty Hickman.

ELIZABETHTON - Brian Keith Mathes, age 54, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord and family and friends who have passed before him on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Gene and Roma Jean Mathes. Brian was a graduate of Hampton High School and a member of Hampton Christian Church. He loved bass fishing, Nascar and bluegrass music. He was a brave and positive individual even when faced with a serious illness. Brian will be remembered as a kind hearted man and will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Paul Mathes and grandparents, John and Callie Mathes, Luther and Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley.
