ROAN MOUNTAIN - Ellen Hoss Hughes, age 90, of Roan Mountain, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 30, 2019 from the Waters of Roan Highland Nursing Center.

Ellen was born in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late James Garfield Hoss and Myrtle Crumley Hoss. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Hughes; her son, Roger Hughes; her twin sister, Helen Hoss Hughes; five sisters, Lillian Ellis, Ruth Lewis, Mae Winters, Edith Jones and Margaret Buck; and two brothers, Carl Hoss and Paul Hoss.

Ellen had been employed for Tri-State Container and retired from Kennametal. She was a member of Cove Creek Presbyterian Church in Roan Mountain. Ellen loved to quilt, gardening, loved animals and enjoyed cooking and canning.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, Danny Hughes and wife Diana, of Roan Mountain, TN and Gary Dean Hughes, of Florida; one daughter, Phyllis Whitehead and husband Danny, of Knoxville, TN; several grandchildren and several great grandchildren; one sister, Lydia Ann Shipley, of Bluff City, TN; and special friends, Wilma Townsend and Carolyn Johnson. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Ellen Hoss Hughes will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 2, 2019 in the Hughes and Arrowood Cemetery in Roan Mountain with Reverend Delaney Berry, officiating.

JOHNSON CITY - Helen Hoss Hughes, age 90, of Johnson City, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Helen was born to the late James Garfield Hoss and Myrtle Crumley Hoss and grew up in the Shell Creek Community of Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde Hughes; her eldest daughter, Sandra Jean May; two brothers, Carl Hoss and Paul Hoss; and five sisters, Lillian Ellis, Ruth Lewis, Mae Winters, Edith Jones and Margaret Buck.

Helen graduated from Cloudland High School in 1945, where she was a stand out on the girls' basketball team. Her love for basketball led her to become a life-long fan of Tennessee Vols Basketball. After marrying her late husband, Clyde Hughes the couple lived several years in the Cove Creek Community before moving to Johnson City in 1960. Helen was employed by Tri State Container Corporation for several years and retired as an inspector for Kennametal and was a long standing member of King Springs Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sons, James Hughes and wife Shirley, of Elizabethton and Tommy Hughes and wife Holly, of Blountville; one daughter, Penny Townsend, of Jonesborough; five grandsons; three granddaughters; twelve great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; one step grandchild; three step great grandchildren; two sisters, Ellen Hughes, of Roan Mountain and Lydia Shipley, of Bluff City; a special friend, Angela Moore; a special niece, Pam Sells; and three special nephews, Randy Ellis, Sonny Ellis and Wade Heaton.

A service to honor the life of Helen Hoss Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Sunday, December 2, 2018 in the Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Pastor Jon Ruetz, officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday; or at the residence of her daughter at other times.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, December 3, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Joe May, Jeremy May, Clinton Hughes, Lucas Hughes, Michael Townsend and Bailey Sheffield. Honorary pallbearers will be Bill Carter, Norman Simerly, Michael Bennett and Mike Hubbard.

Helen married Clyde Hughes on 13 Jul 1946 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Clyde (son of George Washington Hughes and Nora Maggie Gouge) was born on 5 May 1912 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 4 Jan 1988 in Washintgon County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee. George was the son of Paul and Lillian (Hoss) Ellis.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956 in Alaska.

George graduated from University of Tennessee in 1960 with an engineering degree. He began his career as an industrial engineer in Roanoke, Virginia and eventually moved to High Point, North Carolina.

He lived in High Point for 40 years, and he enjoyed fishing, basket weaving and watching UT sports in his retirement.

The funeral service was conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton, Tennessee.

Interment will follow in Happy Valley Memorial Park.

George married Phyllis Simerly on 26 Dec 1956. Phyllis (daughter of William M. Simerly and Alice Graybeal) was born on 10 Sep 1935 in , Avery County, North Carolina, ; died on 6 Sep 2015 in Guilford County, , , North Carolina; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee.
