He was the grandson of Zachariah Campbell, Jr. and the great-grandson of Zachariah Campbell Sr., an early settler along the Watauga River, in the area by about 1780, certainly by 1790.

Alex was a private in Co. B of the 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. (Union). He was among those taken POW at McMinnville, Tenn. by Confederate forces. Several members of the 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol. Cav., U.S.A. and the 4th Regiment were involved in the Bridge Burnings that were planned by William Carter and personally approved by Abraham Lincoln. See the book, History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. by Scott and Angel (1903, reprint 1987) for a discussion of the Union loyalties of Carter County, especially the Hampton area. The Rev. E.E. Hazelwood, 61, well known Baptist minister, died at his home at Hampton last night following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was one of the most highly respected and beloved ministers in this entire section and has the distinction of preaching in almost every church of the Watauga Baptist association which comprises Johnson and Carter counties. At the time of his death, He was pastor of the Union Baptist church of Cardens Bluff, having accepted the pastorate on May 11, 1913. Ordained a minister in 1906 at Hampton by the Rev. W.J. Potter, assisted by the Rev. John Rainbolt and the Rev. Sam C. Deloach, he has served as pastor at Milligan, Limestone Cove, Little Mountain, Hunter, Winner, Carter, Stoney Creek, Harmony Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Caldwell Baptist Church, Siam, Gap Creek, Fish Springs, Dungan's Chapel and at Hampton. In his ministerial work, he has held numerous revivals and baptized more than 2,000 converts. Following out the command of the Master, he has loved his fellowmen as himself and led a life of service, going throughout the mountainous section, helping those not only in spiritual need, but physically as well. Dark, stormy weather meant nothing to him as many times at night he has traveled miles through rain and cold to help those in need. He served as preacher and teacher to many. The Rev. Hazelwood was born on September 7, 1873. On Feb. 11, 1894, he was married to Miss Celia M. Goodwin, four children being born to this union, two daughters and two sons. His Christian life began very early, having professed faith in Christ in 1888 uniting with the Hampton Baptist church one year later. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. E.E. Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; four grandchildren, Dovie Pearl Miller, Edgar Miller, Mary Christine Hazelwood, Charles Hazelwood; one brother, George Hazelwood, all of Hampton. Funeral services will be conducted from the Union Baptist church at Carden's Bluff Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Bowden, the Rev. Clay Wilson and Judge W.R. Allen officiating. Interment will be made in the Morton cemetery. Active pall bearers will be Henry Guinn, Donce Street, James B. Deal, Percy Campbell, Bob Campbell, Bruce Pierce, Roy Wilson and Will Sams. Mrs. J. A. Campbell died at her home Butler, Route 2, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. after a short illness. Mrs. Campbell was a native of Carter County, and member of the Campbells Chapel Christian Church at Fish Springs. Survivors are her husband, J. A. Campbell; two sons, Earl and Bruce; two brothers, Bill Campbell, George Campbell, Butler; three sisters, Mrs. Jane Bailey, Lebanon, Mo., Mrs. Lona Trivett, Mrs. Della Duvall, Butler; 11 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren. Delores (Dee) Cable Tester, age 95, Lakeview Drive, Butler, passed away peacefully at Lakebridge Healthcare Center, Johnson City on March 14, 2010, at 11:30AM.

Dee was a native and life-long resident of Butler until January 2009 when she became a resident at Lakebridge. She was born October 10, 1914, and spent her youth in the Sugar Grove community and had lived in the Midway community since 1936. She was a daughter of the late William and Ella Anderson Cable.

Dee was devoted to her family throughout her life. Her greatest joy came when the family 'got-together' on her birthday and at Christmas. One of those memorial occasions came on her 80th birthday when every member of her family was present at a surprise birthday party. In return her family was totally devoted to her. She did not spend a single day in the fourteen months at Lakebridge without at least one family member present. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and her many friends.

Dee was a homemaker and worked at various jobs. Additionally she was a mother to her children and a second mother to many other community children. Dee was a loyal member of Midway Baptist Church for over seventy years. She loved and supported many programs in the church including missions. She supported her community and beyond. She loved people, animals and flowers. She gave homes to dogs, cats and goats and worked among her pretty flowers as long as she could. Just recently, Dee said, "I believe God allowed me to live this long because deep in my heart I have a great love for every person."

Dee was proudest of being a Christian woman and of her membership in Midway Baptist Church. A sad part of her life happened in 1948 when the TVA permanently flooded her home place along the Watauga River. Her father's family had lived there for over one hundred and fifty years. Dee was extremely fond of her pioneering ancestors and throughout her life she exhibited pioneer spirit. She remembered and told vividly many stories of her childhood in the river valley and on the hills surrounding it.

Dee was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Luke Tester in 1967, her father, William, in 1930, her mother, Ella, in 1940, an infant son, Robert Lee Tester in 1942 and her seven siblings: Nettie Main, Dewey Cable, Annie Irick Conway, Verdie Potter, Ordie Potter, Alma Ward and Alta Triplett, by a special son-in-law, Chalmas Laws.

Dee is survived by her children and their spouses: daughter, Charlene Laws Moretz, Dry Hill; son, Charles Herman Tester and wife Nancy, Sulphur Springs; daughter, Juanita Wilson and husband Jack, Hunter; daughter, Carolyn Wagner and husband Bob, Bluffton, SC; daughter, Pat Icenhour, Mountain City; son, Steven Tester, Midway; and by grandchildren and spouses, Doug and wife Peggy Laws, Brent and wife Jeri Laws, Randall and wife Denise Laws, Rob and wife Diana Tester, Roland Tester, Mike Wilson, Danny and wife Jennifer Wilson, Todd and wife Jeanette Wagner, Tammy and husband Jim Mellott, Tracy and husband Mark Jones, Kim and husband Kevin Hayworth, Sam and wife Deena Icenhour, Billy and wife Jennifer Icenhour and Taylor Tester; and by great grandchildren, Tim, Greg, Cristi, Misty, Louise, Emma, Leah, Lukas, Wyeth, Eli, Abby, Nick, Megan, Zack, Conner, Samuel, Bud, Rhiannon and Ryleigh; and by great-great grandchildren, Amber and Abby; and by brothers-in-law, Howard Tester, Morristown and Turner Triplett, Johnson City; sisters-in-law, Ruth Jones and Marjorie Tester, Johnson City; and by fifteen nieces and nephews; and by lifetime friend and neighbor, Ruby Wagner and special friends, Lorene Tester, Jesse Wagner, Rhonda Michini and Trenton and Kay Davis.

Dee and her family express very special appreciation to Lakebridge Healthcare Center staff for their dedicated care and the residents for their friendships over the past year and to the Antioch Baptist Church ministry, Danny and Dot, for the love expressed to residents and their families, to "Preacher Mac" for his faithful encouragement and music, to Debbie for her special songs. Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Providence, R.I., died Monday morning in the Elmwood Health Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, she had lived in Rhode Island for the past 20 years and was a daughter of the late Frank and Joanne Archer Peters. Mrs. Nichols was a Protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nichols, Sr., in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, and Carl Nichols, Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Mike Peters of Hampton; and two sisters, Mrs. Nell Pierce of Hampton and Mrs. Laura Bowers of Elizabethton. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The body is being returned to Elizabethton for funeral and interment. Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services for Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Provicence, R.I., who died Monday, will be held at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday from the Sunset Chapel of Hatahway-Percy Funeral Home with Fred C. Lester, minister, officiating. Music will be by Mrs. Georgia Cox, organist. Interment will be in the Morton Cemetery at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Friends may call at the residence of a son, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, at any time.

Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. The body will remain in the Hamlett-Dodson Furneral Home in Kingsport where funeral arrangements will be announced later. Funeral services for Mrs. E.H. Bowers will be conducted at 3 pm Wednesday from the First Christian Church, Kingsport, with Dr. L. Palmer Young officiating assisted by Dr. Clyde Smith of the Central Christian Church of Bristol. Burial will be made in the Happy Valley Memorial Park.

Mrs. Laura M. Peters Bowers, 91, Rt. 2, Elizabethton, died Thursday morning, March 3, 1994 at the home of a grand-daughter, Jane Radford, Rt. 4, Elizabethton, following an extended illness. Mrs. Bowers was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Frank and JoAnn Archer Peters. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John C. Bowers in 1964, two daughters, Dimpler Farris in 1970 and Lula Mae Bowers in 1986, and by three grandchildren. Mrs. Bowers was a member of the Blue Springs Christian Church and a retired employee of Southern Cafe.

Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services for Mrs. Laura M. Peters Bowers, 91, Rt. 2, Elizabethton, will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday from the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home. Graveside services and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Bowers Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 until 7 p.m. Saturday and at the homes of her daughters any time.
