David Alexander Simerly, age 66, died at his home, 228 Roan street Monday morning after a short illness.
Mr. Simerly was a retired lumberman, a native of Carter county, and was married to Debbie L. Perry, June 3, 1899.
Survived by the following: wife, Mrs. Debbie L. Perry Simerly; three daughters, Mrs. Verne Allen, Mrs. Glenn Roberson, Mrs. Russell Curtis; one son, Jack Simerly, all of Elizabethton; one sister, Mrs. Annie Cordell of Shell Creek; three brothers, C. C. Simerly, Erwin, John and W. Y. Simerly, Elizabethton; four grandchildren, Edward Simerly, Richard Allen, Billy and Francis Jean Curtis, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted from the Methodist Memorial church at 3:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. Solon McNeese in charge, assisted by Rev. V. Floyd Starke.
Burial will be made in Highland cemetery.
Music will be in charge of Mrs. Houston Netherland.
Active pallbearers will be the nephews.
Flower bearers will be the Hattie Kane class and members of Circle No. 1 of Memorial Methodist church.
The body will be returned to the home at 226[sic] Roan street from the Roy Hathaway Funeral Home this afternoon at 5:00 o'clock.

His death certificate states that he died on September 24, 1925 due to an accident. He was seen by the doctor on September 22, 1925. His year of birth is incorrect on the document, stating that he was born on December 17, 1883. However his age at the time of his death was 31 years,9 months, and 7 days, making his date of birth December 17, 1894. The dates, as well as the spelling of his first name on the marker, are all incorrect.

JOHNSON CITY - Arlene Beatrice Stinson, age 73 of Johnson City, TN, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Hampton, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late Carmal and Fannie Bell Glover Jackson. Arlene retired from Wal-Mart after 28 years of service. She loved baking, her family, especially her grandchildren and her dog, Charlie. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings, Arnold Jackson, Gene Jackson, and Joyce Woodby.

Arlene was born on January 11, 1949, in Hampton, TN. She graduated from South Greene High School in 1967. She married the love of her life, Boyd, in 1971. They welcomed Wesley in 1976 and Brian in 1978.

1 John 4:7 tells us, “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him”. Arlene was the perfect embodiment of the love of Jesus Christ. She was kind, caring, and compassionate. Arlene was a friend to everyone she met. She was a loving wife and mother and adored her grandchildren.

Arlene is survived by her husband, Robert Boyd Stinson, sons Wesley (Danielle) and Brian (Ashley), grandchildren, Megan, Josh, McKinnley, Noah, Emily, Isaiah, Taylor, and Elin, great-grandchild, Gage, and siblings, Lois Ragno and Roy Jackson; also several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Arlene is scheduled for Friday, September 23, 2022 at Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 12:00 to 1:30 PM. The funeral will begin at 1:30. Graveside services will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.

ELIZABETHTON - Bessie Hemphill, 81, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, October 2, 2015 surrounded by her loving family at her home. A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Ida Morton Campbell. Mrs. Hemphill was a member of Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. Mrs. Hemphill loved going to church and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hemphill was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack F. Hemphill and seven sisters and three brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Debbie Barnes and her husband David of Elizabethton; her son, Gary Hemphill and his wife Sherry of Elizabethton; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Thelma Sneyd and her husband Carl of Johnson City.

The family will receive friends and family to share memories from 5:00PM until 7:00PM on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at Tetrick Funeral & Cremation Services, Johnson City. JOHNSON CITY - Thelma Lue Sneyd, age 84 of Johnson City, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at her home. She was a daughter of the late Dave and Ida Morton Campbell, born to them on September 12, 1937 in Washington County. She united in marriage to Carl Sneyd and to this union, two loving sons were born. She was a homemaker and attended the Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church.

Along with her parents, Thelma is preceded in death by her husband Carl Sneyd.

Thelma is survived by her loving sons, Kyle (Barb) Sneyd and David (Amy) Sneyd; her grandchildren, Josh Sneyd, Heath (Christina) Sneyd, Kelby Sneyd and fiancé Brittney Birchfield; honorary grandchildren, Justin Alley, Jordon and Misty Shepard; her great-grandchildren, Aislynn Sciubba, Mikaela Sciubba and J.T. Hayes. She is also survived by many dear friends left behind to cherish her memory.

David Lee Campbell, 62, Johnson City, died Monday, September 29, 2003, at his residence. He was a native of Washington County and had lived in Johnson City most of his life. David was a son of the late David Walter and Ida Bell Morton Campbell. He was an employee of the Washington County Sheriff's Department and was formerly employed by Morris-Baker Funeral Home for many years. David was a staff sergeant in the National Guard, having served for 12 1/2 years. He was a member of the Johnson City Free Will Baptist Church and had volunteered as a chaplain with the Johnson City Police Department David had been the director of youth baseball with the Johnson City Pony League and had been an umpire and referee with Johnson City Parks and Recreation for many years. He was a member of the Arcana Masonic Lodge #489, Limestone. Survivors include his wife, Joan Campbell; three sons, David Wayne Campbell and his wife, Paula, Johnson City, Michael Lee Campbell and his wife, Lori, Knoxville, and Pfc. Daniel Walter Campbell, stationed in Iraq; one daughter, Ida Sue Campbell, of the home; four sisters, Gladys Jones, Reatha Floyd, Bessie Hemphill and Thelma Sneyd, all of Johnson City; one grandson, Andrew John Campbell, Johnson City; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Friday in the Morris-Baker South Chapel. Rev. Rex Johnson and Rev. O. P. Stokes will officiate. Masonic rites will immediately follow the funeral service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday. The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Jonesborough. Phyllis Simerly Ellis, 79, of High Point, N.C., passed away peacefully due to complications of Alzheimer's disease on Sunday, September 6, 2015, at Hospice of the Piedmont in High Point.
Mrs. Ellis was born on September 10, 1935 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late William "Bill" Simerly and Alice (Graybeal) Simerly.
Mrs. Ellis graduated from Cloudland High School in 1953. She received her bachelor's degree in education from East Tennessee State University in 1957 and later earned her master's degree in education. She married her high school sweetheart, Mark Ellis, on December 26, 1956 in Roan Mountain, Tenn., and lived with him in High Point for over 40 years. She dedicated 40 years to teaching elementary school children before retiring in 1997.
Throughout her life she enjoyed teaching, traveling, collecting antiques, attending auctions and spending time at the family cabin in the mountains.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Mark Ellis, who passed away on June 12, 2014.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and David Mikkelson of High Point, N.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Keith Huff of Kernersville, N.C.; four grandsons (who knew her affectionately as "Mimi"); one great-grandson; and one sister, Clarene Kerley of Elizabethton, Tenn.
The funeral service for Phyllis Simerly Ellis will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 12, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton, Tenn., with Rev. John Vernon and Rev. David P. Mikkelson officiating. The receiving of family and friends will be from 1 until 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. She was the daughter of Ora McKeehan and Mildred Simerly of Elizabethton, TN. After graduating from ETSU, she married James W. Clement. They traveled and lived in numerous states and countries while Jim was a pilot in the US Air Force until his death in 1970 in Vietnam. She taught at St. Mary's High School and Central High School in Cheyenne, WY. After her youngest son graduated from high school, a love of travel and meeting people led her to join the Department of Defense, where she had teaching assignments in both the Atlantic and Pacific regions. Devoted to the pursuit of knowledge and education, she formed lifelong bonds and kept in contact with many of her students. She moved to Johnson City in 1995, where she was a member of St. Mary's Church and a volunteer at St. Mary's School.

Preceding her in death were her husband, mother, father, two sisters, Wanda Adams and Maxine Little; a brother, Tommy McKeehan, who was killed in the invasion of Normandy; and her protector, Thomas H. Lane.

HAMPTON - Lois Norris Hill, 89, Hampton passed away Monday, July 31, 2017 in the Signature of Elizabethton.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the Ray & Jennie Simerly Norris. Lois was retired from North American Rayon Corporation after 42 years of service. She attended Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Glen Hill who passed away August 1, 1981 and by three sisters: Georgia Hill, Ruth Teague and Belle Hyder.

ELIZABETHTON - Dayton Lynn Simerly, 77, Elizabethton passed away Saturday April 1, 2017 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. He was born August 4, 1935 in Unicoi County, Tennessee to the late Conley and Mae Miller Simerly. Lynn was a graduate of Elizabethton High School. He was a dedicated Christian and loved the Lord. He was a member of the West Side Christian Church. Lynn was a retired Inspector for the Tennessee Department of Transportation after 41 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years Libby Brooks Simerly. A daughter, Debra Cochran and husband Tim. Two Sons: Terry Simerly and wife Jamie and Robert Lynn Elliott and wife Cindy. Eight Grandchildren: Brooks Cochran, Colton Elliott, Brandon Shatley, Jessica Pritchard, Dustin Simerly, Jeremy Simerly , Terrina Simerly, and Katie Simerly . Several great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews and a special friend: Ken Nidiffer. Fletcher "Gene" Simerly, 85, of Greeneville, Tenn., passed away Thursday, September 21, 2017, at Laughlin Memorial Hospital, Greeneville. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Ernie and Dolly Casey Simerly. He was a graduate of the University of Tennessee with his degree in Electrical Engineering. "Gene" retired as an electrical engineer at Phillips Electronics. He worked for the U.S. Government on the ICBM Submarine Missile Program and was the primary developer of the Nintendo game. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. "Gene" enjoyed watching Tennessee Vols football and loved the outdoors, hiking and going to the beach.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Simerly, and two sisters, Ada McKinney and Edith Peters.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Nancy Simerly, of the home, and a nephew, Earl McKinney, Elizabethton. Several cousins also survive.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late James Edward and Norma Simerly Trivette. He was a 1965 graduate of Elizabethton High School and attended East Tennessee State University. Mr. Trivette worked in the twisting department of North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church and was an avid reader.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Culbie & Novella Simerly Trivett. Ronnie was a 1962 graduate of Hampton High School. He served in the United States Army and the Tennessee National Guard. He formerly was employed at North American Rayon Corporation, a bus driver and was a Carter County Commissioner for over 20 years. Ronnie was a member of Slagles United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Watauga Masonic Lodge # 622. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Ruthie Trivett and a nephew: Timmy Oliver. He was an avid fisherman & hunter.

Phyllis was born in Johnson City to the late John and Ethel Woodby Simerly.
Phyllis was a 1946 graduate of Science Hill High School. She was a member of the Church of Christ. Phyllis was the wife of a minister. She and her husband lived in many locations and worked in many churches. She was guided by her faith in God and her love for Jesus Christ throughout her life. She had a great sense of humor and was very much a people person. Later in life she developed an avid interest in researching her family's genealogy.
In addition to her parents Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Kitzmiller, daughter, Susan Valdetero of Monroe, NC, siblings, Gordon Simerly, Donald Simerly, Ruth Smith and Ernest Simerly all of East Tennessee.

Marie S. Brown, 91, passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021, and was laid to rest to await her resurrection in the Lord Jesus. She was the daughter of the late Matney and Maud Blevins Simerly. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Oscar Brown; a sister, Euvada Simerly Widener; two brothers, Lawrence and Ralph Simerly; two nieces and two nephews.
Marie was a graduate of EHS and attended Steed College. She began her working career at S H Kress where she became a floor manager, better known to the local people as “The Floor Lady.” Afterwards, she was employed at Raytheon until her retirement. She attended Borderview Christian Church all her life where she was so proud to be the oldest member. Although being unable to attend lately due to ill health, she always wanted the church papers to keep up with the news, especially the prayer list.
Survivors are her sister, Dorothy Dale Chapman, and several nieces and nephews.

Florence Ella Pearce, 86, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, March 10, 2022, from Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Florence was born in Elizabethton to the late Hobart Emerson Simerly and Maude Peeks Simerly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Cecil Pearce, and a brother, Howard Simerly.
Florence was a charter member of East River Park Christian Church and also a member of Borderview Christian Church. Florence had worked as a graphic designer for Arcadia Graphics and enjoyed traveling to the beach, line dancing, painting, cooking and catering weddings. Her greatest joy came from spending time and loving on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as they were her greatest joy!
Those left to cherish Florence’s memory include her son, Jeff Pearce of Elizabethton; two grandchildren, Jordan (Emily) Pearce of Kingsport and Justin (Amanda) Kilby of Jonesborough; three great-grandchildren, Baylee Pearce, Brooklyn Pearce and James Pearce; and two sisters, Helen Simerly of Elizabethton and Mary Lou Kilby of Johnson City. Jack A. Campbell age, 78 of Elizabethton passed away Friday, June 14, 2019, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City. He was the son of the late Earl and Dessie Loraine McNeil Campbell. In addition to his two parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother; Rev. Earl Campbell and three sisters; Bonnie Campbell, Christine Smith & Pauline Shaw.

Mr. Campbell was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was the owner and operator of Campbells' Folsom Printing Company, of Elizabethton, for over 30 years. He was also employed by the Elizabethton Star for 38 years where he worked in the advertising department. He attended Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church. Jack was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid UT fan and had a passion for education. He served on the Elizabethton City School Board for 10 years and served on the Carter County Commission. He was also a member of the Cyclone Touchdown Club and a member of the Betsy Band Booster Club. He enjoyed gathering daily with his coffee club friends. He also loved being on Watauga Lake with his family and friends, riding jet skis, and he also enjoyed spending time in Florida during the winter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years; Beatrice "Bea" Calhoun Campbell of the home, two sons; Jackie Campbell and wife Teresa of Elizabethton, Jason Campbell and wife Courtney of Elizabethton, sister; Martha Stout of North Carolina, six grandchildren; Morgan Noack and husband Bryan of Fort Worth, Texas, Alexandra Campbell of Elizabethton, Taylor Campbell of Elizabethton, Sophie Peterson of Elizabethton, Jonathan Glover of Johnson City and Allison Glover of Johnson City. Bud was a mechanic and construction worker. He was a lifetime member of the Hampton Fire Department and a member of the CERTS Committee and Storm Watchers. He attended Moores Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

Keith Campbell, 69, of the Little Milligan Community of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 14, 2023, at his home. Keith was born in Elizabethton to the late Kyle and Ethel (Smith) Campbell. Keith had worked in the twisting unit at North American Rayon Corporation and had also worked at Timberland in Mountain City. Keith enjoyed anything outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also liked to cook and being with his dogs. Those left to remember and cherish Keith’s memory include his wife, Phyllis (Davenport) Campbell, of the home; his sons, Mason Campbell of Butler and Charles (Jennifer) Campbell of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Jude Campbell and Moriah Campbell; a brother, Steve Campbell of Elizabethton; two sisters, Nelda (Doug) Hatley of Butler and Patricia (Maurice) Widener of Mountain City; and a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Melissa Davenport. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Willard & Edith Maxine Johnson Campbell. Pennye was a 1965 graduate of Hampton High School. She was a former Carter County School Bus Driver and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 17. Pennye was a member of Union Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Cable, a son: Vonell Chris Cable and a sister: Andrea Beth Campbell.

Mr. Simerly was born in Johnson City and was the son of the late Roy Gordon & Nina Ruth Broyles Simerly Hughes. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, John & Ethel Simerly and Loda & Bessie Broyles.

He was a member of Harvest Time Baptist Church where he served as Deacon. He was associated with several Gospel Quartets including the Gloryway Singers, whom he started with, and sung with them for 27 years. He liked to fish and hunt.

Mr. Simerly was a retired Bail Bondsman Agent.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Simerly, Johnson City; two sons, Brian Simerly (Kathy) Jonesborough and Christopher Simerly (Maureen), Kansas City, MO; daughter, Stacy Banner (John) Erwin; grandchildren, Marissa Payne, Mason Payne, Landon Banner, Riley Banner and Sarah Craddock; and great grandson, Adrik Heried; and several nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be conducted 8:00 pm, Friday, July 8, 2022, at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Pastor Ben Hurd and Bro. Terry Austin officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm Friday prior to the service.

Interment services will be conducted 12, noon, Saturday, July 9, 2022, at Monte Vista Burial Park.

Pallbearers will be John Banner, Mike Broyles, David Broyles Jr., Kenneth Broyles, Isaac Austin and William Joiner. Honorary pallbearers will be Monty Brown, Rowland Barker, Steve Carr, Austin Inancsi, Hunter Inancsi, Ricky Alexander, and David Inancsi.

ELIZABETHTON - Ray Glover, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, from injuries suffered from a fall earlier in the week. He passed peacefully with his family by his bedside.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jeanette, of the home; daughter Renee Erwin and her husband, Jeff, of Elizabethton; son Boyd “Chip” Glover of Fort Lauderdale, FL; granddaughter April Reece and her husband, Aaron, of Elizabethton; and great-grandson Dawson Reece, of Elizabethton. Ray is also survived by a sister, Nell Taylor, and her husband Larry, of Mount Carmel, TN; a brother, Johnny Glover, and his wife Judy, of Hampton, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including a very close nephew, Josh Taylor, of Bradenton, FL.

Ray was the son of the late Boyd Carter Glover and Mattie Mosler and was born on December 7, 1940, in Carter County. He was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He then joined the United States Army and was stationed in Ansbach Germa-ny with the 4th Missile Battalion, 28th Artillery (Lacrosse Missile).

After completing his military service in 1962, Ray became a businessman in East Ten-nessee and Kentucky. Ray and his wife, Jeanette, spent almost 25 years as the owners of Glover Theaters, which included theaters such as the Bonnie Kate, State Line Drive-In, Jolly Roger, Flatwoods Drive-In, and the Cougar Drive-In. Ray and Jeanette also owned and operated Capitol Discount and Brittney’s in Elizabethton. In addition, Ray served as a mentor to Chip with his business, All-Star Card Company.

Ray’s many interests included watching classic movies, especially westerns of the 1930s and 1940s, going to film festivals, flea markets, and traveling—including over a dozen trips to China. He served for many years on the City of Elizabethton’s Baseball Commission and attended the Elizabethton Twins minor league baseball games. After his retirement from his own businesses, Ray enjoyed working for his good friend, Wille McVey, at Valley Forge Auction and Wholesale where the employees and cus-tomers were like family to him.

Ray never met a stranger and leaves behind many wonderful friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m. at East Side Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton, under the direction of Pastor Justin Deaton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. before the service.

The Entombment Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday October 6, 2022 in the Mausole-um of Faith, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be chosen from his honor-ary pallbearers, family, and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Erwin, Larry Taylor, Josh Taylor, Aaron Reece, Willie McVey, Bill Vaught, C.Y. Peters, Bo Camp-bell, Charlie McCoury, Woody Thompson, Bradley McVey, his church family, and the former customers and employees of his businesses.
