Pauline Hughes Whitehead, 92, Hampton, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2021 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home after a brief illness.

She was born March 6, 1929 in Bakersville, North Carolina to the late Waites & Geneva McKinney Hughes.

She had lived in Tennessee most of her life. She was a member of the Simerly Creek Fellowship Believers Church. She loved to work in her garden, flowers and loved to sew. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Narvel Whitehead, a son: Calvin Whitehead and several brothers & sisters.

Survivors include a daughter: Angie Matice & husband Lee, Walterboro, South Carolina, a son: Alvin Whitehead, Elizabethton. One Granddaughter: Bethany Isaacs. A twin sister: Olene Arrowood and Myrtle Thomas both of Bakersville, North Carolina. A sister-in-law: Shirley Whitehead. Several nieces & nephews.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in the Whitehead Cemetery with the Rev. Greg Whitehead officiating. Burial will follow the service. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Rev. Evin Hopson, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from his residence. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Linney and Della Grindstaff Hopson.
Mr. Hopson was a minister and a member of Zion Baptist Church. He had been a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church most of his life.
Mr. Hopson enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, preaching the gospel and spending time with his great-great-granddaughter, Adlynn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Hildred McKinney Hopson; a daughter, Elayna Townsend; and several sisters and brothers.
Those left to cherish his memory include six children, Danny Hopson and wife Betty, Newland, N.C., Gail Hughes and husband Danny, Elizabethton, Vickie Hughes and husband Delbert, Newland, N.C., Cathy Sargent and husband Wes, Elizabethton, Lorana Greene and husband Steve, Roan Mountain, and D.L. Hopson and wife Tammy, Elizabethton; a brother, Ham Hopson, and two sisters, Molly Sluder and Josie Hughes, all of Newland, N.C. Sixteen grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren also survive.
A service to honor the life of Rev. Evin Hopson will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 4, at Zion Baptist Church with Dr. Alan King and Pastor Allen Laws officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. The family will receive friends at the church from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service, or at the residence at other times. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Danny Hopson, D.L. Viola J. Roark, age 87, 667 Hampton Creek Road, Roan Mountain, died Monday, September 15, 2003 at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Hospital, Linville, NC following an extended illness. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. She was a member of Grays Chapel Presbyterian Church. She was a homemaker and a member of Order of Eastern Star Hampton Chapter #470.

Survivors include her husband of 67 years, Walter D. Roark, of the home, two daughters and sons-in-law, Mrs. Mary and Bernard Brengard, Asheville, NC, Mrs. Margaret and George Hegler, Lancaster, SC, three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Gail Roark, Lincolnton, NC, Johnie and Burma Roark, Claremont, NC, Lonnie and Judy Roark, Mooresville, NC, two sisters, Ora Toney, Richmond, VA, Creola Gentry, Richmond, VA, one brother, Paul Johnson, Roan Mountain, seven grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, one great grandchild, several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003 at Tetrick Funeral Home Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain with Mr. Thom Burleson officiating. The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, September 18, at Johnson Roan View Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Joey McKinney, Frank Presnell, Roger Palmer, Donnie Holdren, friends and neighbors. Mr. Paul Johnson, age 82, of Roan Mountain, TN passed away Wednesday, November 21, 2018

at his residence. A native of Roan Mountain, he was the son of the late John and Daisy Birchfield Johnson. Mr. Johnson was a retired U.S. Navy Chief and he served during the Vietnam War. He was the owner of the White Way Grill. Mr. Johnson was the V.F.W. Post # 2166 Commander and a member and Past Master of the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM and was a past Vice-President and Founder of the Jericho Shrine Temple of Roan Mountain.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Katrene Willis Johnson and five sisters, Viola Roark, Edith Holdren, Deliah Freeman, Creola Gentry and Ora Tony. Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Paula Johnson Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Laura Johnson Szillus and husband Ken, Rio Rancho, NM. Two granddaughters, Paulina Katrene Rovelo, Roan Mountain and Angela Szillus, Rio Rancho, NM also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Paul Johnson will be held on Sunday, November 25, 2018 in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. Masonic service will be held at the funeral home by the Roan Mountain Masonic Lodge # 566 F&AM. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. on Sunday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the service on Sunday in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Military honors will be accorded by the Carter County Honor Guard.

BAKERSVILLE, NC - Ronald Burleson, age 74, of Bakersville, passed away, April 12th, 2023 at Mission Hospital in Asheville. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Howard and Mary Burleson of Buladean and his older brother Robert Burleson of Spruce Pine.

Ronald was kind and strong, he attended Roan Mountain Baptist Church, enjoyed fishing and skeet shooting and was happiest at Unaka Rod and Gun Club.

Ronald is survived by his wife of 50 years, Cynthia Burleson. They have a daughter, Elizabeth Allen, and her husband David Allen of Asheville. Ronald is also survived by two brothers: Larry Burleson of Buladean and Garry Burleson of Kingsport.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Henline Hughes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 2:00-3:00 with the funeral to follow. Pastor Russell McKinney will officiate the service. Burial will follow in Green Young Cemetery.

Perry Hopson, 59, of the Roaring Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at his home.

He was a son of Delpha Hughes Hopson of Roaring Creek and the late Rothrock Hopson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Paulette Hughes. He loved restoring old cars, carp fishing, but mostly he loved his family.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his loving wife of 35 years, Teresa Webb Hopson; daughter, Angel Dugger and husband, Andrew, of Licklog; sons, Chad Hopson and wife, Kristen, of Roaring Creek, and John Hopson and wife, Julie, of Roaring Creek; three grandchildren, Austin and Aaron Dugger and Savannah Hopson; sisters, Brickie Pittman and husband, Joe, of Spruce Pine and Nadine Helton and husband, Jerry, of Roaring Creek. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in The People's Church on Roaring Creek. The Rev. Daniel Nance, the Rev. Chris Nance and the Rev. Jody Almond officiated. Burial followed in the Hopson Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers were Derick Hughes, Gabriel Wise, Joel Buchanan, Hansel Allen, Johnathan Hughes, Ray Howell and Shelton Brooks. Honorary Pallbearers were Aaron and Austin Dugger.

Jesse James Birchfield, of Elizabethton, a wonderful great big beautiful Christian man, who was so loving to everyone, left this earth Tuesday, June 30, 2015, to live with Jesus. He was born July 21, 1931 in Carter County to the late Jesse James and Sudie Graybeal Birchfield.
Mr. Birchfield was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and Duke University. Jesse served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a former teacher and coach at Unaka High School and a retired District Manager with Syntex Pharmaceutical of California. He was a former Professional Football Player and was an official with the Southern Conference of Football.
Jesse was a Sunday School Teacher, Superintendent of Sunday School, Chairman of the deacon board, treasurer and choir member of First Free Will Baptist Church for 50 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Vivian Baker and Doris Lawrence; his brother, Robert "D.L." Birchfield; his precious mother-in-law, Georgia Kate Pope; his brothers-in-law, Sonny Hale and Jerry Pope; and sister-in-law, Joy Pope.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Joyce Pope Birchfield; daughter, Dr. Jessica "Katie" Gladstone and husband Bob of Hollywood, Fla.; sister-in-law, Leta Hale, and many special nieces, nephews and cousins; a god child, Tiffany Taylor Jenkins; and his special angel, whom he loved dearly, Judy Carver Deloach.
A service to celebrate the life of Jess Birchfield will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, July 3, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with the Rev. Raymond Amos and the Rev. Preston Sartelle officiating. Music will be by his daughter, Dr. Katie Gladstone, and David Arney. Lonnie Roark, age 70, of Mooresville, North Carolina, went home to be with his Lord and his beautiful wife Judy, on Saturday, June 18, 2016 from the Gordon Hospice House in Statesville, North Carolina. Lonnie was born on February 18, 1946 to the late Walter and Viola Johnson Roark. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Judy Hitechew Roark; and one brother, David Roark.

Lonnie retired as a quality control manager and was a United States Marine veteran, having served during the Vietnam Era. He was a member of the American Legion and enjoyed hot rod cars, gardening, and reading and studying the Bible. Lonnie was a loving, gentle faithful man, who would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need.

Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Adam Roark and wife Patty, of Mooresville, NC; his daughter, Carrie Roark-Whited and husband Billy, of Catawba, NC; a granddaughter, Jaden Roark, of Mooresville, NC; one step granddaughter, Zoey Baumgardner, of Mooresville, NC; two step grandsons, Corey and Cody Whitehead, both of Mooresville, NC; one step great grandchild, Brody Allen Whitehead, of Mooresville, NC; two sisters, Mary Brengard, of NV and Marge Heglar and husband George, of Lancaster, SC; one brother, Jonnie Roark and wife Burma, of Clairemont, NC; a special niece, Kathy Heaton, of Roan Mountain, TN; and a special friend, "Murphy". A service to honor and celebrate the life of Mr. Lonnie Roark will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 in the Rhododendron Chapel at Tetrick Funeral Home of Roan Mountain with Rev. The family will receive friends from 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Tuesday; or at the residence of his niece, Kathy Heaton and husband Rick, at any time.

LAUDERHILL, FL - Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone of Lauderhill, Florida died Sunday, July 28, 2019 in the University Hospital, Tamarac, Florida.

Katie was born March 17, 1962 in the Johnson City Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of Joyce Pope Birchfield and the late Jesse James Birchfield. Kate was a member of the First Freewill Baptist church of Elizabethton, Tennessee. She was a very active church member in Florida leading the youth choir and was a soloist.

Katie was a wonderful, beautiful lady with so much heart. She worked diligently to do the work of the Lord. Her ability to pray would bring the spirit of the Lord to all those present.

Katie was a 1980 graduate of Elizabethton High School. She earned a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State University and was a member of the Jazz Singers and Dancers. Katie received her Doctorate from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Katie was the owner and operator of I Care for Eyes in Pembrook Pines, Florida where she practiced for 27 years. She was fluent in Spanish as many of her patients were Hispanic. Katie was known by her patients for the loving special care they received.

Katie Loved the water, especially skiing and spending time on her house boat the Katiedid on Watauga Lake.

Katie was proceeded in death by her father, Jesse James Birchfield, her maternal grandmother, Georgia (Mama Georgia) Pope, her paternal grandparents, Sudie Birchfield and Jesse Birchfield,Sr., an uncle, Sonny Hale and an uncle and aunt Jerry and Joyce Pope.

Those left to cherish her memory include; her husband, Robert Gladstone of the home, her mother Joyce Pope Birchfield, her special aunt, Leta Hale, cousins, Judy Carol DeLoach and her husband Victor, Tiffany Jenkins, Joey Garrison and her husband Josh, Whitney Taylor, Joseph Taylor and his wife Leslie and her Godson, Vic DeLoach, two much loved fur babies, Taipei and Hanji.

A service to honor Dr. Jessica Kate (Katie) Birchfield Gladstone will be conducted at 3:00 PM Thursday in the chapel of the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Elizabethton, TN. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 2:45 PM Thursday.
