Delores (Dee) Cable Tester, age 95, Lakeview Drive, Butler, passed away peacefully at Lakebridge Healthcare Center, Johnson City on March 14, 2010, at 11:30AM.

Dee was a native and life-long resident of Butler until January 2009 when she became a resident at Lakebridge. She was born October 10, 1914, and spent her youth in the Sugar Grove community and had lived in the Midway community since 1936. She was a daughter of the late William and Ella Anderson Cable.

Dee was devoted to her family throughout her life. Her greatest joy came when the family 'got-together' on her birthday and at Christmas. One of those memorial occasions came on her 80th birthday when every member of her family was present at a surprise birthday party. In return her family was totally devoted to her. She did not spend a single day in the fourteen months at Lakebridge without at least one family member present. She will be greatly missed by her entire family and her many friends.

Dee was a homemaker and worked at various jobs. Additionally she was a mother to her children and a second mother to many other community children. Dee was a loyal member of Midway Baptist Church for over seventy years. She loved and supported many programs in the church including missions. She supported her community and beyond. She loved people, animals and flowers. She gave homes to dogs, cats and goats and worked among her pretty flowers as long as she could. Just recently, Dee said, "I believe God allowed me to live this long because deep in my heart I have a great love for every person."

Dee was proudest of being a Christian woman and of her membership in Midway Baptist Church. A sad part of her life happened in 1948 when the TVA permanently flooded her home place along the Watauga River. Her father's family had lived there for over one hundred and fifty years. Dee was extremely fond of her pioneering ancestors and throughout her life she exhibited pioneer spirit. She remembered and told vividly many stories of her childhood in the river valley and on the hills surrounding it.

Dee was predeceased by her husband, the love of her life, Luke Tester in 1967, her father, William, in 1930, her mother, Ella, in 1940, an infant son, Robert Lee Tester in 1942 and her seven siblings: Nettie Main, Dewey Cable, Annie Irick Conway, Verdie Potter, Ordie Potter, Alma Ward and Alta Triplett, by a special son-in-law, Chalmas Laws.

Dee is survived by her children and their spouses: daughter, Charlene Laws Moretz, Dry Hill; son, Charles Herman Tester and wife Nancy, Sulphur Springs; daughter, Juanita Wilson and husband Jack, Hunter; daughter, Carolyn Wagner and husband Bob, Bluffton, SC; daughter, Pat Icenhour, Mountain City; son, Steven Tester, Midway; and by grandchildren and spouses, Doug and wife Peggy Laws, Brent and wife Jeri Laws, Randall and wife Denise Laws, Rob and wife Diana Tester, Roland Tester, Mike Wilson, Danny and wife Jennifer Wilson, Todd and wife Jeanette Wagner, Tammy and husband Jim Mellott, Tracy and husband Mark Jones, Kim and husband Kevin Hayworth, Sam and wife Deena Icenhour, Billy and wife Jennifer Icenhour and Taylor Tester; and by great grandchildren, Tim, Greg, Cristi, Misty, Louise, Emma, Leah, Lukas, Wyeth, Eli, Abby, Nick, Megan, Zack, Conner, Samuel, Bud, Rhiannon and Ryleigh; and by great-great grandchildren, Amber and Abby; and by brothers-in-law, Howard Tester, Morristown and Turner Triplett, Johnson City; sisters-in-law, Ruth Jones and Marjorie Tester, Johnson City; and by fifteen nieces and nephews; and by lifetime friend and neighbor, Ruby Wagner and special friends, Lorene Tester, Jesse Wagner, Rhonda Michini and Trenton and Kay Davis.

Dee and her family express very special appreciation to Lakebridge Healthcare Center staff for their dedicated care and the residents for their friendships over the past year and to the Antioch Baptist Church ministry, Danny and Dot, for the love expressed to residents and their families, to "Preacher Mac" for his faithful encouragement and music, to Debbie for her special songs. Vaughn Simerly Sr., 90, Hampton, passed away Monday, November 28, 2022, at Hillview Health Center. He was born May 26, 1932 in McMinnville, Ore., to the late Linzy and Velma Hyder Simerly. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Vaughn served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Maintenance Department of East Tennessee State University.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Vaughn Simerly Jr.; three brothers, Gene Gordon Simerly, Sam Simerly and William Bob Simerly; and one sister, Selma Simerly.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Stevens Simerly; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Joey McNeil; a daughter-in-law, Julia Simerly; and two grandsons, Keith McNeil and Justin Simerly. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

BUTLER - Lida Mabel Cable Barnes, 100, Butler, Tn. And Emerald isle, NC passed peacefully after a brave battle with cancer on the morning of April 3, 2021. Lida was born on May 29, 1920 to the late Captain Thomas William Cable, Sr. and Sallie Mae Reece Cable of Butler, Tenn. Lida served in the United States Navy from June 15, 1943 to November 16, 1945.She was discharged as a Pharmacist’s Mate First Class. Women were not allowed active duty at that time. She was a graduate of Watauga Academy and East Tennessee State College. She taught for a period of time at Watauga Academy, Butler. She received a degree as a Medical Technologist from Duke University. She was a member of Butler Baptist Church, Butler Chapter # 218, Order of Eastern Star, DAR Otway Burns Chapter and Women Veterans of Coastal North Carolina. In addition to her parents, Lida was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Robert B. Barnes who passed away April 3, 2007, son Tom Barnes, a sister Ann Johnson, and brother Tom Cable.

Survivors include her daughter: Patricia Barnes of Emerald Isle, NC; three granddaughters: Jennifer (Kevin) Snyder of Raleigh, NC, Nikki (Brian) Gant, Marion, NC and Stacy (Lee) Wheeler of Tuscon, AZ; and six great grandchildren. Nolamae H. Cook, 73, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, at her residence, surrounded by her family. Nolamae was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late Alvin and Orla Holtsclaw Hicks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Elva Vines and Eula Jean Hicks, and her brothers, Dewey Hicks and Elbert Hicks.
Nolamae had worked as a medical secretary and attended Open Door Baptist Church. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and loved to play piano for many churches, loved her family, spending time with her grandchildren, loved gardening and taught Sunday School.

ELIZABETHTON - Edith Finney, age 94, of Elizabethton, passed away on Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

She was a daughter of the late Parker G. and Nettie Cable Main and was born on February 11, 1925 in Butler, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Delmer Finney and three brothers, Edgar "Bud" Main, W.K. "Bob" Main and Parker G. Main, Jr.

Edith was a happy and caring person who was always ready to help others in need. She was a long-time member of Sims Hill Christian Church who regularly attended all of the services and activities as long as her health permitted. She was also a member of the Carter County Humane Society for over twenty years.

Edith loved being a homemaker and was known for her cozy and inviting home that she always enjoyed decorating for the holidays. She loved gardening and was proud of preserving the vegetables that she had grown. She was blessed to have many friends and enjoyed life.

Those left to cherish her memory include two sisters, Stella Tester of Elizabethton and Mary Jo Laws of Butler; a niece, Penny White of Elizabethton; a nephew, Larry Finney of Elizabethton; special friends and relatives including: Peggy Davenport, Shelia Woods, Mack and Linda Henry, Bill and Sharron Hampton and other nieces, nephews and cousins who were all special to Edith.

She worked as a homemaker, caregiver and her favorite job as the “Chef” at Toddler Time Daycare. Mary Jo was a very loving and giving person who made sure her children and grandchildren were taken care of before herself. She loved flowers and animals, especially her ducks, Bob and Sally. She was a member of Elk River Baptist Church. In addition to her parents Mary Jo was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Haskel “Sonny” Laws; two sisters, Edith Finney and Stella Tester; three brothers, Bud, Bob and P.G. JOHNSON CITY - Barry T. Triplett, 68, Johnson City, passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from his residence surrounded by his loving family. A native of Carter County he was the son of the late Turner Stout and Alta Louise Cable Triplett. Barry served in the United States Army during Desert Storm. He served in the Navy for 4 years and 2 months, and then served his country as a Staff Sargent in the United States Army and Army Reserves for 24 years. He retired from the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center as a nursing assistant after 25 years. During his employment he was recognized as the 2nd runner-up in the Nation as the nursing assistant of the year. Barry was a hard worker and after retirement he found himself working at Quickway Transportation and Wal-Mart. He took pride in everything that he did and always gave his all. He was an avid UT Football fan and fitness buff, but his priority was his savior, Jesus Christ and his family. In earlier years, he and his family were members at Johnson City Baptist Temple where he was a deacon. He currently was an active member at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, where you could see him cooking with his "best bud," David McCoy, or teaching Sunday school with his wife, Tyonnia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Andrew Triplett; and his father-in-law, Joe Carl Stoots.

He leaves behind his loving and faithful wife of 45 years, Tyonnia Stoots, Johnson City; children, William "Billy" Scott Triplett and his wife, Rachael, Kingsport, Lesli Triplett-Miller, and Elizabeth Hope Triplett and her fiancé, Stephen Presnell, all of Johnson City; grandchildren, Jordan, Bethany, Tyler, Mary Beth, Lincoln and Andrew; siblings, Linda Hagen and her husband, Glenn, MI, his twin brother, Harry Triplett, Johnson City, Michael Triplett, Stoney Creek, and Teresa Baines and her husband, Allen; his brother-in-law, Ricky Stoots and his wife, Tammy; sister-in-law, Terry Beckman and her husband, Dave; and his mother-in-law, Ruth Stoots, all of Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Pauline June Chambers Arnold, 79, Elizabethton passed away on Thursday, September 15, 2022, with her loving children by her side. She was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late John and Effie Holtsclaw Chambers.
Pauline retired from Denise Lingerie as a seamstress. She loved to travel, the beach and going to the Grand Ole Opry.
She was preceded in death by her parents, several siblings, and her husband, Kenneth Arnold.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Terry (Taylor) Arnold and Tammy (Joe) Smithdeal; her grandchildren, Tiffany Kyviakidis, Thomas Cowan, Tara (Jason) Carden and Whitney Arnold; and her great-grandchildren, Legend Cowan and Tillie Carden. PINEY FLATS — Margaret G. Royston was born on August 15, 1945, and left for her everlasting journey on Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Margaret was a resident of Piney Flats, Tennessee.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Roy Tolley; sister, Peggy Willis; father, Orville Tolley; and her mother, Edith Tolley.

Margaret is survived by a son, Allen Royston of Chesapeake, VA; daughter, Tammy Eggleston of Elizabethton, TN; and brother, Dean Tolley of Piney Flats, TN.

It is hard to lose someone as special as Mom, the only comfort given is knowing God must have needed her more. Her smile and laughter will stay in our hearts forever. She expressed some words of wisdom that we would like to pass on: "LOVE ONE ANOTHER!"

KNOXVILLE - Cleo M. Blackwell, age 101, passed away on December 25, 2018 at West Hills Health and Rehabilitation, Knoxville TN, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Blackwell was a graduate of East Tennessee State University, a teacher in Carter County for 15 years and Rogersville City Schools for 22 years and a member of Rogersville First Baptist Church. Those preceding her in death: husband, Max L. Blackwell; parents James A. Morrell, Sr. and Belle Miller Morrell; siblings, A.T., James, Joseph W., John and Delia Morrell, and Lavisa Hood.

She is survived by children, Michael Blackwell and wife Kay, and Debbie Weed and husband Stuart; grandchildren, Callie Church and husband Justin, Kelly Weed, Jessica Hemphill and husband, John Serrao, and Rachel Hemphill; great-grandchild, Benjamin Jenkins; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

John Dayton Morrell, son of James Allen Morrell, Sr. and Cassa Belle Miller Morrell, passed away on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, after a short illness. He asked God to take him home. He was born on June 1, 1921.

Born handicapped, John was able to live a lively, happy and active life. He has one surviving sister, Cleo Morrell Blackwell, in Rogersville, Tennessee; a stepson, Gurney Ray Pilk; and several nieces and nephews.

ELIZABETHTON - Jack Anderson Chambers, age 94, Elizabethton, went to Glory on June 9, 2022 at his home on Jim Elliot Road surrounded by family. Jack was the son of Eliga Scott Chambers and Evelin Blevins Chambers and was born on a cold, snowy day, at home, on Tiger Creek. He attended Hampton Elementary School and after his father’s unexpected death, he left school after the 6th grade to help his mother raise his younger siblings. He worked at North American Rayon (back in the day when they sent a bus, driven by Gene “Hog” Wilson, to Tiger Creek to pick up employees to be transported to work at the plant). He served proudly for his country in Germany as a Corporal for the First U.S. Army Rangers. After his service in the military, he returned to North American Rayon and retired as a security guard at the age of 72. He married the love of his life, Margaret Christine Jones, on September 21, 1956, at Unicoi Methodist Church and they were married for 61 years.

Jack was a faithful member of Oak Grove Christian Church since 1956, serving in numerous leadership roles including Elder, Chairman of the Board, and Chairman of the House and Grounds Committee. It was not uncommon for him to be late for Sunday lunch because he would take communion to shut-ins, surrounding hospitals and nursing homes with his good friend, Haynes McKeehan. He enjoyed attending the Carter County Christian Men’s Fellowship. He was a member of the Carter County Cattlemen’s Association and was voted Small Farmer of the Year. He was a member of the Watauga Lodge, 3rd Degree and the Scottish Right of Free Masonry, 32nd Degree of Knoxville, TN. He was also a member of the VFW Post 2166, Elizabethton, the American Legion Post 49, and the Disabled American Veterans #17, Elizabethton. Pap, as most called him, enjoyed raising a garden, growing tobacco, raising cattle, and fishing. He enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren participate in various sports and church activities. He especially enjoyed the times spent with family and friends around the kitchen table.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Christine in 2017 and his siblings, Mack Chambers, Bula Holtsclaw, Zeke Chambers, and Virginia Blair. Pap leaves behind to cherish his memories, his sister, June Dale Barnett; two children: Brenda Ford and husband, Ken, Jeff Chambers and wife, Susan; five grandchildren: Samuel Ford/Carrie, Jacob Ford/Brandy, Daniel Chambers, Jason Chambers/Elizabeth, and Nicole Chambers/Jeff “Skeeter” Bowers; eleven great-grandchildren: Anderson Ford, Boone Ford, Bentley Layne Ford, Ayden Chambers, Cooper Chambers, Nolan Chambers, Weston Chambers, Adelyne Chambers, Ryan Wilson, Chris Wilson, and Keaton Radar; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Nannie Lou Miller, 75, of 137 Jerome Stevens Road, Hampton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 29, 2016. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Ward and Lena McClellan Chambers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Miller, and son, Brandon Miller.
Mrs. Miller attended Whitehead Hill Christian Church. She retired as a seamstress from Levi Strauss Company. She enjoyed playing Bingo, working crossword puzzles and gardening.
Those left to cherish her memory include four daughters, Hazel May and husband Benny, Battle Creek, Mich., Lula Lyons and husband Robert, Hampton, Tenn., Jeannette Barnett and husband Junior, Elizabethton, Tenn., and Debra Miller and special friend, Rebecca Dugger, both of Hampton, Tenn. J.P. “Chuck” Chambers, 62, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, at his home. Chuck was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Ward and Lena (McClellan) Chambers. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Delie Stevens, Rosie Birchfield and Nannie Miller, and four brothers, Ray Chambers, Gene Chambers, Lonnie Chambers and Earl Chambers. Chuck was one of a kind! He was a funny man and was “one of the good ones!” Chuck retired from logging and was of the Free Wil Baptist faith. He enjoyed ginseng hunting, turkey hunting, riding his motorcycle and four wheelers and anything outdoors. Most of all he loved his grandchildren and his family. Those left to cherish his memory include his children, Jim Chambers (Brooke Quillen of Roan Mountain, Ashle Chambers (Chris Younce) of Johnson City and Tony Chambers (Hunter McKinney) of Roan Mountain; his grandchildren, Steven Rost, Jacob Rost, Dominic Chambers, Noah McKinney, Stevie Thomas and Fiona Kerr; his brothers, James Chambers and June Chambers (Donna), all of Roan Mountain; and his sisters, Betty Chambers and Bonnie Arnett (Lester), all of Roan Mountain. HAMPTON - Richard "Arnold" Hughes, age 76, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 2, 2018 from the Hermitage Health Center.

Arnold was born in Carter County to the late David N. Hughes, Sr. and Dealie Stephens Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flo Hughes; two brothers, Robert Lee Hughes and David Hughes, Jr.; and a sister, Sophina Ware.

Arnold was a loving husband, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and a lifelong friend to many. He graduated from Hampton High School, where he played basketball and was part of the 1960 basketball team that won the State Championship. Arnold retired from General Motors as an assembly worker and was a member of Sunset Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and as an assistant Sunday school teacher of the adult class. Arnold loved fishing and was an avid fisherman. He was also very devoted to his church and his church family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dianne L. Robert Stanley Atwood, 73, passed away on March 22, 2021 while traveling in Costa Rica. Robert was born on September 7, 1947 in Butler, TN to George Atwood and Anna Ruth (Cable). He was an Army veteran that served in Vietnam. After serving in the army, he settled in Warsaw, OH and worked as a boilermaker for more than 30 years. After retiring, he settled in Hobe Sound, FL to enjoy the sun and sea. His greatest pleasures were spending time with family and friends, sharing his knowledge and expertise, and traveling the world. Robert was a kind person, who never turned down a friend in need.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, George and Anna Ruth (Cable), and his sister Brenda Curbey. He is survived by his children, Anthony (Danielle) and Jonathan (Natividad), wife Georgeta, his brother William Fred (Naneth), George Atwood, his two sisters Patricia Tester (Doyle), Elizabeth Wallace (Terry), Laura Baker, two stepchildren, Dana Hall and Horia Paun and many nieces and nephews, as well as a special longtime friends, Gill and Karen. She was born February 21, 1958 in Elizabethton to the late George and Anna Ruth Cable Atwood. She had lived in Butler for several years before moving to Elizabethton.
Brenda was a 1975 graduate of Johnson County High School. She was a homemaker and in earlier years she was employed at Pizza Inn. She was a member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.
Survivors include her daughters, Layla Trivette and husband Doug and Lana Curbey, all of Hampton; two grandchildren, Alyiah Trivette and Kaylee Graybeal; three sisters, Patricia Tester and husband Doyle and Elizabeth Wallace and husband Terry, all of Butler, and Lora Lee Baker of Kentucky; three brothers, Robert Atwood and wife Georgeta Paun of Florida, Freddie Atwood and wife Naneth of Elizabethton, and George Atwood of Ohio; several nieces and nephews; the father of her children, Jeff Curbey; and a special friend, Charles Julian.

Lloyd M. Dugger, 62, 168 Buntontown Road, Butler, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. Mr. Dugger was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Arthur and Blanche Finney Dugger. He was also preceded in death by four brothers, Earl, Ray, Lee and Ed Dugger.

ELIZABETHTON - Kenneth Dale Thomas, age 54, of Elizabethton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, February 22, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center, following a brief illness. A lifelong resident of Carter County, Tennessee, he was the son of Edward Thomas and Edna Hicks Thomas.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Alvin E. and Orla Holtsclaw Hicks, and his paternal grandparents, Gurney and Helen Treadway Thomas; his father-in-law, Shelby Williams; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was a 1984 graduate of Hampton High School where he was voted “Mr. HHS” his senior year and played on the football team for four years. After graduation, he attended East Tennessee State University, graduating in 1988. He was employed by the Carter County Board of Education as a Student Management System Coordinator. He was a member of Beck Mountain Baptist Church.

Ken enjoyed bluegrass music and went to Japan for two weeks in 2005 with a local bluegrass group and entertained the citizens of that country. He also played the doghouse bass for other musical groups in the area throughout the years.

BUTLER - Mrs. Patricia Dugger Vines of Butler, TN went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 1, 2018.

She was the daughter of the late Polly Jane and Glenn Dugger. Patricia was a devoted wife and mother and matriarch to an extraordinary family. Patricia was equally committed to the children of East Tennessee serving as a social worker and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children in this regional community for thirty-one years. Patricia's impact will be felt through generations to come. Her legacy will always be of a great and extraordinary wife and mother; her grandchildren and the lasting and meaningful impact that she has had on the children, the downtrodden and those less fortunate in this community.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Laura Bunting, Sarah Myatt, Connie Miller and her brother Clayton Dugger. Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Glenn Vines of 46 years; her son Cody Vines and daughter-in-law Kay Vines; her son Glenn Vines Jr. and daughter-in-law Stephany Vines; her grandson, Ethan Vines; her beloved sisters, Glenda Greene, Thelma Blankenship and Sue Bunton; a beloved brother Herb Arnold and her very special friends, Pam and Debbie and many nieces and nephews. ELIZABETHTON - Joseph Lynn Campbell, 64, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at his residence. He was born March 21, 1958 in Carter County to the late E.C. & Nell Dugger Campbell. Joe was a 1976 graduate of Unaka High School where he played Basketball and Football. He retired as Director of Operations at the Elizabethton Electric System after 28 years of service. After his retirement from the Electric System, he was employed as Safety Instructor for J.T. & S. out of Murfreesboro. He loved hunting, camping and farming. Joe was a member of Caldwell Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son: Daniel Campbell.

Survivors include his wife: Kimberly Holly Campbell. One Daughter: Jaclyn Gifford. Two Stepchildren: Autumn (Nathan) Kyte and Brandon Little. Two Brothers: Richard (Pam) Campbell and Edward (Roberta) Campbell. Several nieces and nephews. His two cats: Patches & Eddie.

A Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2023 in the Fairview Baptist Church, Watauga Road, Elizabethton with Pastor Gary Roe officiating. Honorary Pallbearers will be his many, many friends that he has made through the years.

ELIZABETHTON - Steve Dugger, age 60, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord from Duke University on Monday, November 26, 2018, following a courageous battle.


Steve was born in Elizabethton to Walter Clyde Dugger and Norma Ruth Irick Dugger, of Elizabethton.

Steve was a loving husband and father and was a very active member of Valley Forge United Methodist Church. He retired from the Carter County Highway Department, where he had worked on the paving crew. Steve enjoyed participating in Revolutionary War Re-Enactments with the re-enactment group, Company of Over Mountain Men.

Those left to cherish his memory in addition to his parents, include his wife, Ginger Sparger Dugger, of the home; his son, Nathan Dugger, of Elizabethton; his daughter, Bethany Wachterman and husband Jason, of Waynesville, NC; one brother, Glenn Dugger and wife Greta, of Port Orange, FL; one sister, Sherry Ayers and husband Steve, of Johnson City; his niece, Emily Dugger; and four nephews, Ian Dugger, Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers and Kevin Sparger.
