The Rev. E.E. Hazelwood, 61, well known Baptist minister, died at his home at Hampton last night following an illness of several weeks. The deceased was one of the most highly respected and beloved ministers in this entire section and has the distinction of preaching in almost every church of the Watauga Baptist association which comprises Johnson and Carter counties. At the time of his death, He was pastor of the Union Baptist church of Cardens Bluff, having accepted the pastorate on May 11, 1913. Ordained a minister in 1906 at Hampton by the Rev. W.J. Potter, assisted by the Rev. John Rainbolt and the Rev. Sam C. Deloach, he has served as pastor at Milligan, Limestone Cove, Little Mountain, Hunter, Winner, Carter, Stoney Creek, Harmony Baptist Church, Poplar Grove, Caldwell Baptist Church, Siam, Gap Creek, Fish Springs, Dungan's Chapel and at Hampton. In his ministerial work, he has held numerous revivals and baptized more than 2,000 converts. Following out the command of the Master, he has loved his fellowmen as himself and led a life of service, going throughout the mountainous section, helping those not only in spiritual need, but physically as well. Dark, stormy weather meant nothing to him as many times at night he has traveled miles through rain and cold to help those in need. He served as preacher and teacher to many. The Rev. Hazelwood was born on September 7, 1873. On Feb. 11, 1894, he was married to Miss Celia M. Goodwin, four children being born to this union, two daughters and two sons. His Christian life began very early, having professed faith in Christ in 1888 uniting with the Hampton Baptist church one year later. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. E.E. Hazelwood; one daughter, Mrs. John Miller; four grandchildren, Dovie Pearl Miller, Edgar Miller, Mary Christine Hazelwood, Charles Hazelwood; one brother, George Hazelwood, all of Hampton. Funeral services will be conducted from the Union Baptist church at Carden's Bluff Sunday afternoon with the Rev. Bowden, the Rev. Clay Wilson and Judge W.R. Allen officiating. Interment will be made in the Morton cemetery. Active pall bearers will be Henry Guinn, Donce Street, James B. Deal, Percy Campbell, Bob Campbell, Bruce Pierce, Roy Wilson and Will Sams. Mrs. Bertha O. Nichols, 93, 101 Mitchell St., Providence, R.I., died Monday morning in the Elmwood Health Center after a lengthy illness. A native of Carter County, she had lived in Rhode Island for the past 20 years and was a daughter of the late Frank and Joanne Archer Peters. Mrs. Nichols was a Protestant and was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Nichols, Sr., in 1981. Survivors include two sons, Ray Nichols, Rt. 5, Johnson City, and Carl Nichols, Charleston, S.C.; one brother, Mike Peters of Hampton; and two sisters, Mrs. Nell Pierce of Hampton and Mrs. Laura Bowers of Elizabethton. Two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. The body is being returned to Elizabethton for funeral and interment. Mrs. E.H. Bowers, 64, died at 1:20 pm Monday at a Kingsport hospital after several months illness. Her home was at Jonesboro, Route 5 on the Johson City-Kingsport Highway. She was born in Hampton, and had lived in Kingsport and Washington County for 33 years. She was a member of Grandview Chapter 441 of Eastern Star and was a Gold Star Mother. He son Lt. Wayne H. Bowers died in World War II. Survivors are her husband, E.H. Bowers, Route 5, Jonesboro; two daughters, Mrs. Logan G. Flanary, Kingsport; Mrs. Philip B. Hardymon, Columbus, Ohio; one son, Capt. James B. Bowers, with the U.S. Air Force in Japan; four sisters: Mrs. Laura Bowers, Elizabethton; Mrs. Nan Smith, Hampton; Mrs. Bertha Nichols, Johnson City; one brother, Mike Peters of Indiana. Survivors include seven sons, Ray, Jess, Fate, and Edward Oliver, all of Hampton; Howard Oliver of Burgie Street, Elizabethton; Roy Oliver of Mountain City, and James T. Malcolm Hazelwood, 38, taxi driver of near Hampton and World War veteran is dead and Mrs. Mary Tims Campbell, 23-year-old widow, of Fish Springs, is in the Shoun Hospital slightly wounded as the result of what the woman said was an attempted murder and a suicide. Mrs. Campbell claims that Hazelwood shot her and took his own life. She had a bullet wound in the side of her abdomen which hospital attaches stated this morning was slight and that the woman would probably recover. A post mortem examination showed that Hazelwood's heart had been pierced by the bullet. Hazelwood's body was found in his home on Divide Ridge about two miles out from Hampton. He was the son of the Rev. E. E. Hazelwood. A coroner's jury composed of: Mike McKinney, Fred Weaver, N. E. Nidiffer, G. C. Goodwin, Geo. Hazelwood, C. A. Jackson, Ernest Shouts[sic], and Porter Nave are withholding a verdict pending further investigation. In the meantime Mrs. Campbell is being guarded by a deputy sheriff at the Shoun hospital.
According to statements of the Campbell girl, Hazelwood called her to come to his home late Tuesday afternoon and requested that she spend the night with him. She said, according to information from the hospital, that she spent the night with Hazelwood and Wednesday morning.
Shortly after noon on Wednesday, the girl is quoted as saying that she told Hazelwood that she was to become a mother in about six months and that he was the father of her unborn baby.
I'd rather see you dead than to have that baby," the girl said Hazelwood remarked.
She said that Hazelwood went into the small kitchen and then calling her to come with him. As she went into the kitchen door, the girl told friends that Hazelwood had one hand behind him and as the door closed he fired one shot at her.
The Campbell girl said that a minute later she ran into the bedroom another short was fired. She went back into the kitchen according to her version of the affair, and Hazelwood was on the floor and was bleeding on his chest. She said that she took a cloth and washed his face with cold water and then ran to the home of a neighbor to call for help. She was emphatic in her statements that Hazelwood shot at her and then killed himself.
Officers called at the Hazelwood home to make the investigation, said that the man was found dead in the kitchen but that no powder burns were found either on his body or the overall jacket he was wearing. Hospital attendants also said there were no powder burns on the girl's abdomen. The pistol was found in a dresser drawer about 25 feet from the place where Hazelwood's body was found.
The Campbell girl said that she had had intimate relations with Hazelwood for several months and was very fond of him. She indicated that her visit to his home late Tuesday evening and her all night stay was not unusual.
While the girl has been living at Fish Springs near here more than a year, she formerly lived at Johnson City. She is the widow of a Clarence Brooks, Mountain Home veteran, who was drowned in a lake at the government reservation.
Hazelwood's wife is dead. He is survived by two children, Christine and Charles and his parents, the Rev. and Mrs. E. E. Hazelwood of Fish Springs. Rev. Hazelwood is the pastor of the Fish Springs Baptist Church. Hazelwood's wife was the former Docia Radford, also of Fish Springs.
Hazelwood also is survived by one sister, Mrs. John Miller of Hampton.
Funeral services are to be conducted Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the Union Baptist Church at Carden's Bluff in charge of Rev. C. L. Bowden, pastor of the Elizabethton Baptist Church. Interment will be at the Goodwin Cemetery and will be in charge of the Hampton Junior Order No. 42.

JOHNSON CITY - Howard Ruben Peters, age 90, of Johnson City, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017 at his home.

He was a native of Johnson City, and the last survivor of his parents, Charles P. and Edna Holden Peters. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Inez, Mary, Celia, Ruby, Dovie, Pearl, Edna, and Charles, Jr.

He attended Science Hill High School, and proudly served in the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean War.

He worked as an electronic technician for the Department of the Navy in Washington D.C., and retired from General Electric in Lynchburg, VA.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of the James H. Quillen V.A Medical Center and the staff of Amedysis Hospice.

ELIZABETHTON - William "Bill" Zane Peters, age 85, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 25, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Bill was born in Hampton, Tennessee to the late Mike and Texie Calhoun Peters.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Jack Peters; and two sisters, Louise Hazlewood and Gail White; his second wife, Peggy Smith Peters; and his dog and companion, "Pandora".

Bill had worked as a pipefitter and was both a United States Army veteran and a United States Navy veteran. He was of the Protestant faith and attended Prayer Tabernacle, where he served as a deacon. Bill enjoyed riding motorcycles, woodworking, shooting muzzleloaders, riding horses and was an avid Philadelphia Eagles sports fan.

She worked in the restaurant and dietary industry throughout her professional career, including positions at Northside Hospital, Westside Elementary School, and T. A. Dugger Middle School. ELIZABETHTON — Wayne Hobert Peters, 92, 1219 Broad Street, Elizabethton was promoted to Glory Sunday, January 27, 2013 at the Ivy Hall Nursing Home.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late Bruce and Iva Lee Reed Peters. He had lived most of his life in Carter County. He had served in the United States Navy During World War II stationed in the Pacific. He was a retired employee of North American Rayon Corporation having worked there for over 30 years. He was of the Free Will Baptist Faith. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife: RuthaMae Slemp Peters, March 6, 1986, by an infant daughter Waynetta Ivajo Peters, four sisters: Bonnie Reynolds, Ada Chambers, Rosa Peters and Dessie McCarty and two brothers: Carl and Bob Peters.

Mr. Peters loved to farm and do carpentry work.

Survivors include Two Daughters: Judy Heaton and husband Ronnie, Elizabethton and Vicky Peters, Clam Gulch, Alaska. A Son: Gary Peters, Elizabethton. 8 Grandchildren and 17 Great Grandchildren. Several Nieces & Nephews.

A native and lifelong resident of Washington County, Tennessee, Willie was born September 22, 1930 to the late James Peters and Nona Mae Davis Peters. She married William “W.T.” Davis on December 13, 1948. Willie was a homemaker and an avid gardener. She loved flowers, especially roses.

Willie had attended services at First Church of the Nazarene in Elizabethton. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, Willie was preceded in death by her husband, W.T., in 2002.

Dana was born September 5, 1938 in Butler, Tennessee to the late Willard Spencer Peters and Winnie Mae (Robinson) Peters. In addition to his parents, Dana was also preceded in death by his beloved wife, Geraldine (Blevins) Peters; and a sister, Betty (Peters) Lewis.

Dana had been employed as a truck driver in the construction business. He was a loving brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved fishing and carpentry work. Most of all Dana loved his family, his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Jean was a native of Carter County. She graduated from Happy Valley High School and Tri Cities Beauty School. Following her graduation, she began working at Kmart and retired as a Pharmacy Technician after 40 years of service.

She attended Chestnut Grove Union Church where she was a devoted member. We find solace knowing that Jean, a woman of profound faith, has now found peace in God’s embrace. She was a constant source of love, joy, and warmth. She will forever be remembered with deep appreciation and affection. Her legacy will continue to live on in our hearts by reminding us of the power of laughter, strength of community, and the irreplaceable impact of unconditional love.

In addition to her husband, Stacey Rash, she was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Tonya Kay, her parents, Clyde & Mable Peters, three brothers, Earl Peters, Freddie Peters, and Bobby Peters, and a sister, Pauline Holland.

Kay was a 1954 graduate of Hampton High School and retired from Sperry/Unisys after 30 years of service. The family of Mildred Ruth Hazelwood Montgomery announces the graduation of their mother – from earth to Heaven – Magna Cum Laude, on Monday, October 3, 2016, from Life Care Center of Elizabethton. She was 89 years old and was a charter member of Parkway Baptist Church in Bristol.
Mildred was born on March 16, 1927 in Hampton, Tenn. Her childhood was beset by the common issues facing rural families. Hunger, disease and poverty were daily struggles. But Mildred had a passion for life and was gifted with hope and a humorous temperament that lifted her above her circumstances. Her personal salvation added eternal significance to her life.
Mildred met and married Reverend Warren Montgomery. They ministered to congregations in Sullivan, Carter and Johnson counties for 50 years. Mildred was the model wife, mother and homemaker.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend Warren Montgomery; three siblings, Ressie Hazelwood Lewis, Mary Hazelwood Potter and George Hazelwood; and a daughter-in-law, Martha Radford Montgomery.
She will be remembered by four sons, Dr. Larry Montgomery (Ginger), of Hampton, Dr. Gary Montgomery (Sherry), of Bristol, Jerry Montgomery (Jackie), of Mexico Beach, Fla., and Terry "Monk" Montgomery (Marlene), of Bowmantown; and eight grandchildren, Larry "Benny" Montgomery, Angela Montgomery Conley, Gary Montgomery, Marcye Montgomery, Brian Montgomery, Micah Montgomery, Jared Montgomery and Jerry Montgomery. HAMPTON - Betty Louise Hazelwood Estep, 88, Hampton, passed away Monday December 24, 2018 at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Edward S. & Nelle Smith Hazelwood.

She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Carl Dean "Bill" Estep, September 13, 2011, a brother: Carl Hazelwood and two sisters: Fern Simerly and Demple Nave.

JOHNSON CITY - Julia Elaine Woodby, 70, Johnson City, passed away Wednesday, June 7, 2023, at her home, following courageous battle with Pancreatic Cancer.

Julia was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City. She was the only child of the late Carl E. and Sarah Pearl Peters Woodby.

Julia was a resident of the Dawn of Hope homes since 2009, and was very much loved by the staff and residents of the other homes.

She was a member of First Christian Church, Johnson City, and attended the Drive-In Church at University Parkway Baptist Church, Johnson City.

Her talents included jewelry making, crafts, latch hooking, and she loved cats of any kind, and had quite the collection of toy cats.

In addition to her parents, Julia was preceded in death by a special uncle, Howard Peters.

She is survived by several cousins, as well as a special housemate Kathy, former housemate Tammy, and very special friends Randy and Shannon.

The family wishes to thank the following staff at Dawn of Hope, C.O.O., Residential Director, the Chief Medical Officer, the lead staff and especially the direct support professionals, Becky and Janice, and all the others who worked with Julia through the years. They would also like to extend a very special thanks to Caris Healthcare for their help and support in the final days of her life.

The graveside funeral service will be held Friday, June 9, 2023, at 2:00 P.M., in Oak Hill Cemetery, 205 Whitney St., Johnson City, TN 37604, with Pastor Scott Thompson and his wife Kathy will be in charge of the service and music.

ELIZABETHTON - Lula Dorothy Lett, "Dottie", age 81 of Elizabethton, passed away on, Wednesday, April 11, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Dottie was a native of Carter County and was the daughter of the late Bonnie Stout Nave and Worley Milburn Nave, Sr. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, JoAnn Rash; two brothers, Worley Nave, Jr. and James Nave; two infant twin siblings; a grandchild, Jenna Claymon and a step-granddaughter, Charlene Cox.

Dottie was a long time member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church. She cooked Wednesday night meals for the church and always participated in Bible School activities. She was a very devoted Christian even to her last days. Most of all she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always put others before herself.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband, James "Broad" Lett, of the home; two sons, Phillip Claymon and wife, Michell, of Elizabethton; Gary Claymon, of Elizabethton; two step-children, Reggie Lett and wife, Kathy, of Bluff City; Sharon Russell, of Johnson City; four grandchildren, Angelia Claymon Hurley and husband, Aaron Hurley, of Piney Flats; Michael Claymon, of Elizabethton; Kelsie Butler and fiancé Spencer Feathers, of Johnson City; Leesha Whistine and significant other, Greg, of Johnson City; two great-granddaughters, Alexis Claymon and Ava Claymon, both of Piney Flats; and a sister, Della Duvall, of Elizabethton. Several nieces, nephews and other grandchildren also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Lett will be conducted on Friday, April 13, 2018, at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Jayson Hoagland officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Willie Horton and Mr. Aaron Hurley. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel on Friday prior to the service.

Della Ruth Nave Duvall, 79, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 6, 2021, at NHC Healthcare of Johnson City following a courageous battle with Alzheimers. Della was born in Carter County to the late Worley Milburn Nave and Bonnie Stout Nave.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Duvall; two brothers, Worley Nave Jr. and Robert “Jim” Nave; and two sisters, Joann Rash and Dorothy Lett.
Della retired from North American Rayon Corporation and had farmed all of her life in Carter County. She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church and a beloved aunt to her nieces and nephews.
A graveside service to honor the life of Della Ruth Nave Duvall will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, August 10, at Happy Valley Memorial Park.

JoAnn Rash, 72, of Elizabethton, passed away on Wednesday, April 13, 2016, at Holston Valley Medical Center, following an extended illness. JoAnn was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late Worley Milburn Nave Sr. and Bonnie Stout Nave. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Worley Nave Jr. and James Nave, and two infant twin siblings.
JoAnn was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church and a previous member of Hunter First Baptist Church. She loved all her church family of both churches and was a faithful helper with the AWANA program. Most of all she was a devoted mother and grandmother.
Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Lindsay Rash II and wife Tammy, of Elizabethton; her daughter, Linda McClure and husband Mitchell, of Elizabethton; three grandsons, Andrew Rash, of Seattle, Ezekiel McClure and Josh Jones, both of Elizabethton; two great-granddaughters, Kaydence Carroll and Kennedy Jones, both of Elizabethton; her sisters, Dorothy Lett and Della Duvall (her best friend), both of Elizabethton; and a special sister-in-law, Patricia Rash, of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

JOHNSON CITY - Arlene Beatrice Stinson, age 73 of Johnson City, TN, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Hampton, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late Carmal and Fannie Bell Glover Jackson. Arlene retired from Wal-Mart after 28 years of service. She loved baking, her family, especially her grandchildren and her dog, Charlie. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings, Arnold Jackson, Gene Jackson, and Joyce Woodby.

Arlene was born on January 11, 1949, in Hampton, TN. She graduated from South Greene High School in 1967. She married the love of her life, Boyd, in 1971. They welcomed Wesley in 1976 and Brian in 1978.

1 John 4:7 tells us, “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him”. Arlene was the perfect embodiment of the love of Jesus Christ. She was kind, caring, and compassionate. Arlene was a friend to everyone she met. She was a loving wife and mother and adored her grandchildren.

Arlene is survived by her husband, Robert Boyd Stinson, sons Wesley (Danielle) and Brian (Ashley), grandchildren, Megan, Josh, McKinnley, Noah, Emily, Isaiah, Taylor, and Elin, great-grandchild, Gage, and siblings, Lois Ragno and Roy Jackson; also several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Arlene is scheduled for Friday, September 23, 2022 at Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. The family will be receiving friends from 12:00 to 1:30 PM. The funeral will begin at 1:30. Graveside services will follow at Roselawn Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be selected from the family and friends.

HAMPTON - Marie Stout Johnson, 78, Hampton, passed away Monday, May 1, 2023 in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late James M. & Maxine Campbell Stout. Marie was a 1963 graduate of Hampton High School. She retired from Quillen Rehab Hospital as an Operator. She was an avid bowler for over 25 years. She had won several trophies from several sections of the country. She also loved to fish. Marie loved to collect pocketbooks. She was of the Baptist Faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Sherry Ollinger and her husband J.R.

Survivors include her husband of 49 years: Dale Johnson. A daughter & son-in-law: Stephanie & Roger Godsey. Two brothers: Dennis Stout & wife Nancy, and David “Duck” Stout & wife Toni. Three sisters: Kay Stout, Vickey Tipton, and Debbie Stout. Several nieces & nephews. Her special friends: L.C. Wright and John Young.

Samuel Thomas Oliver, 67, of Hampton, passed away Monday, March 21, 2016, with his family and friends by his side at the Johnson City Medical Center.
A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Samuel Joseph and Mary Isabell Goode Oliver.
Sam was retired. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and playing his guitar. He was of the Baptist Faith.
He was preceded in death by his good buddy, Johnny Vines.
Survivors include his children, Brandy (Greg) Trivett, Butler, Samantha Meyer, Jonesborough, and D.J. (Whitney) Oliver, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Kaleigh, Hannah, Shaelynn, Dylan and Samson; his brother, Jim Oliver, Johnson City; two sisters, Mary Greene, Gray, and Shirley Hughes, Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews, including his "knot head" niece, Kristal Andrews, and her three special boys; his special friends, David Montgomery, Cody Montgomery and Jim Thorpe; and all his adopted kids.

HAMPTON - Jerry Wayne "Ollie" Oliver, age 66, of Hampton, went to his heavenly home surrounded by his family on Thursday, December 21, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Jerry was born in Carter County to the late Edward H. and Para Potter Oliver. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Johnnie H. Oliver; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Clyde and Hazel Fuller.

Jerry was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He was a brick and block mason by trade and attended Hampton Christian Church. Jerry loved playing guitar, working on his old cars in his garage, and spending time with his friends. He left his imprint throughout the region with the homes he built and the businesses he built and operated.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted wife of 34 years, Kathy Fuller Oliver, of the home; two son, David Oliver and wife Michelle, of Gray, TN and Charles Oliver and wife Deidra, of Erwin; a brother, Bill Oliver and wife Kathy, of Hampton; a sister, Wanda Marlow and husband Buck, also of Hampton; seven grandchildren, Sophie, Malorie, Riley, Keara, Kaleace, Charlie Beth and Jace; one brother-in-law, Jeff Fuller; three sisters-in-law, Stephanie Rowe and husband Chris, Carolyn Fuller, and Jennifer Treadway and husband Wes; and a special friend, Betsy Rainbolt. Jackie "Jack" Thomas Oliver, 72, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 26, 2019, from his residence. Jack was born in Carter County to the late Howard and Beatrice Smith Oliver. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sons, Mark Oliver and Jackie Oliver, and a sister, Billy June Roark.

Jack was a strong, independent and hardworking man, who was also stubborn but always willing to help others and was always there for his family. He had worked at North American Rayon and also as a mechanic at Fred's BP Station. Jack was a member of East Side Free Will Baptist Church. He enjoyed watching movies, westerns and football.

Those left to cherish his wonderful memories include his loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Brenda Coleman Oliver, of the home; three sons, Anthony Oliver, Lawrence Oliver and wife Lisa, and Russell Oliver, all of Elizabethton; a brother, Rick Oliver of Elizabethton; two sisters, Shelby Calhoun and husband Dale, and Beatrice Snider and husband Dave, all of Elizabethton; four grandsons, Austin Boyd, Russ Boyd, Josh Oliver and Ronnie Carr, all of Elizabethton; and one granddaughter, Aleignia Oliver of Elizabethton. HAMPTON - Ray Anthony Harmon, 62, Hampton passed away Tuesday, February 15, 2022 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital after an extended illness. A native of Carter County, he was a son of Cordia Ellen Hazelwood Harmon Berry and the late Bobby Ray Harmon & the late Billy Jack Berry. Ray was a graduate of Hampton High School. He was a former Butcher at Browns Supermarket, former owner of Cole’s Tackle Box and a Machine Operator at Colorworks. Ray was an avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing and marksmanship. He also loved spending time with friends on Dennis Cove Mountain. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. In addition to his Father & Stepfather, he was preceded in death by a sister: Bobbi Harmon.
Survivors in addition to his mother include his wife of 36 years: Rebecca Shingleton Harmon. Two Children: Cole Harmon and Caley Harmon. His Brother: Mark Berry & wife Terri, several nieces and nephews, two great nephews and his special “Hey Babe” Taylor.

Brady M. Nave, 57, of Elizabethton, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, July 15, 2021, at his residence. He was born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Worley M. Nave Jr. and Thelma Catherine Hardin Nave of Elizabethton. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his grandmother, Blanche Hardin, and a first cousin, Gary Clemmons.
Brady was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and working on cars. He loved spending time with his family, especially with his wife and grandchildren.
Brady proudly served in the U.S. Army for 28 years and was a part of Desert Shield, Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Those in addition to his mother left to cherish his memory are his wife, Linda Nave, of the home; a daughter, Reva Phillips and fiancé, Daniel Bates; a son, Sammy Phillips and fiancée, Tammy Wilson of Elizabethton; three grandchildren, Wesley Phillips, Pheonixx Phillips and McKynlee Bates; and a special brother-in-law, Walter E. Williams (DeRhonda) of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Nave will be conducted Monday, July 19, at 2 p.m. in the Mountain Home National Cemetery at the New Annex (215 Heroes Drive, Mountain Home, Tn). ELIZABETHTON - Kristi Lea Stout Champion, 49, Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2022 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born June 5, 1973 in Elizabethton. Kristie was a graduate of Elizabethton High School and East Tennessee State University. She had a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. She was a member of Big Spring Church of Christ. She was preceded in death by her Maternal Grandparents: Duke & Margaret Little Arney and her Paternal Grandparents: James M. & Maxine Campbell Stout, also an aunt, Sherry Simerly a cousin Kevin Arney and a uncle Sam Humphrey.

ELIZABETHTON - Brian Keith Montgomery, age 50, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, April 29, 2021 from Halifax Hospital while on vacation in Daytona Beach Florida.

Brian is a native of Carter County, Tennessee, and son to Terry “Monk” Montgomery and Beatrice Harmon Montgomery. He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents Warren and Mildred Montgomery and his maternal grandparents Renes and Martha Harmon.

Brian Keith Montgomery was a man of strong intellect, held a deep commitment toward family, friends, work, God, and ideas to better the lives of others. He enjoyed exploring the complexities of each and dwelled on finding “solutions”.

From an early age, Brian was taught responsibility. Whether helping with the work and operations of family’s businesses- a fitness center, marina, helping his father and grandfather in construction, or helping his mom set up an office, Brian’s skills and work ethics were established at an early age. He seemed to thrive in helping find a “better way”.

Brian and partner-best friend-wife, Sherri Kay, were a team. Through work, funds, and friends, they supported fundraisers and renovation projects benefiting The Shepherd’s Inn-Safe House/Emergency Shelter for women and children.

Brian’s love for the beautiful East Tennessee Lakes presented a career focus on building elite boat docks. His designs, materials, and workmanship created a revolutionary trend from this highly specialized work and contributed to the overall upkeep of our area lakes.

Those who knew Brian would agree that he was most comfortable with his family and friends. He enjoyed going to concerts, boating, flying and especially riding his motorcycle, all of which exhibited his passion to embrace life. He was quick to offer his support when needed, but he shied away from public acknowledgments or accolades.

Following high school, Brian attended college and achieved over one hundred hours of pre-med education. He was a member of Heritage Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, those left to cherish Brian’s legacy include his wife, Sherri Phipps Montgomery, of the home; father and mother-in-law, Brownie and Brenda Phipps, of Watauga; brother-in-law, Kerry Phipps of Gray; sister-in-law, Kim Phipps of Gray; niece, Makayla Phipps of Gray.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Brian Keith Montgomery will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday, May 6, 2021 at The Farm, 1090 Taylor Bridge Road, Jonesborough, TN 37659 with the Reverend Dr. Larry Montgomery and the Reverend Dr. Gary Montgomery officiating.
