Funeral services were conducted Wednesday for Mrs. C. I. Shoun, who died Monday. The services were in charge of Rev. J. W. Crowe and Rev. J. O. Jones. Mrs. Shoun was 71 years of age. She had been in ailing health for some time and her death was not unexpected. She is survived by one son, Hillie Shoun; four daughters, Mrs. Kemp Lowe, Mrs. R. B. Walsh, Mrs. Clifford Pierce of Doe Valley and Mrs. Brookshire of Jonesboro. Interment was in the Shoun Cemetery.

...66, died at Kennedy Veterans Hospital in Memphis last Wednesday after an illness of two months.
Stout was a native of Johnson county and a farmer. He was a former trustee of Johnson county, former road commissioner, a veteran of World War I, member of the American Legion, member of the Civitan Club here, and a member and deacon of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth Jones Stout; two sons, M-Sgt. Ruben Stout, Fort Bragg, N.C., and Bert Stout, Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Mary Alice Johnson, Knoxville; Mrs. Ann Greer, Butler; one foster daughter, Mrs. Pansy Phipps, Knoxville, one step-son, Capt. Fred Jones, USAF, Enid, Okla., one sister, Mrs. J. Frank Stout, Mountain City; two brothers, Dr. P. D. Stout, Bristol, and George W. Stout, Mountain City; 17 grandchildren and three step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. from Bethel Baptist Church on Saturday with Rev. Tom Worley, Rev. Sam Tatum and A. E. Browne officiating. Burial was in the Stout cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Vaughn Stout, Bruce Roberts, Edgar Bumgardner, Rex Stout, Teddy Pierce, John A. Shown, Delmar Lowe, and Ralph Grandstaff. Flower bearers were neighbors and ladies of the church.

Vera Stout Jordan, age 86, of Mountain City, went peacefully to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 28, 2012 in the Mountain City Care Center were she was a resident for 17 years.

Vera was born March 12, 1925 in the Pandora Community of Johnson County. She was the daughter of the late J. Blaine Stout and Etoila Bell Hicks Stout and stepmother Ruth Jones. She graduated from Steed Business College and worked for Mountain Electric Coop until the birth of her fours sons. She devoted her life to raising them. She grew up in Pandora and was saved at a young age and attended Bethel Baptist Church. She and her family moved their membership to First Baptist Church in Mountain City, in 1967.

She was proceeded in death by her husband, S.D. Jordan, who passed away on December 30, 2001 and brothers, Willard Ray Stout of the home and David " Bert " Stout of Chapin, SC. She is survived by four sons, John B. Jordan of Fort Pierce, FL, Terry Jordan and wife Mary and Jerry Jordan and wife Judy, both of Mountain City, and Phil Jordan and wife Doris of Hermitage, TN; one brother, Rubin Stout of Mount Pleasant, SC; three sisters, Helen Walsh of Columbia, SC, Mary Alice Johnson of Hermitage, TN, and Ann Greer of Mountain City; grandchildren, Michael (Kim) Jordan, Jennifer Campbell, John (Davina) Younce all of Mountain City, Tammy Jordan of Butler, Gerald "Jerry " Jordan, Jr. of Cleveland, MS, Sarah Jordan and Justin Jordan of Hermitage, TN; seven great grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces. She also left many friends at the nursing home and her special friend Minister Jim Hutchinson.

Her family would like to thank all the staff and workers at Mountain City Care Center for their love and affection enabling our mother to be so happy and the care she was given. We would like to thank Caris Healthcare for their wonderful services they provided in her last four days of life. We would like to thank Doctor John Whitlock for the many years of health care he provided and the Johnson County Rescue Squad for their many trips to the Boone Hospital.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012 at First Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at 8:00 p.m. with Pastor Ricky Campbell and Dr. Kenneth Jordan to officiate. Music will be under the direction of Ms. Bethany Campbell, Deanna and Makynna Younce. The graveside service and interment will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 31st at Sunset Memorial Park. Vera's grandsons, Michael Jordan, Gerald Jordan, Jr., and John Younce; great grandsons, Cody Jordan, Gary Evans and Joseph Townsend will serve as pallbearers. MOUNTAIN CITY — Mrs. Emily G. Millsaps, age 89, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016.

She was born on May 27, 1926 to the late James William and Lucinda Stout Grindstaff.

In addition to her parents, Emily was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Millsaps; a son, Richard "Rick" Millsaps; and brother, Florian Grindstaff.

Emily was an amazing lady who was very special to everyone who knew her. She touched many young lives in Johnson County, Tennessee, as indicated by her 51+ years in education. Seeing those young children walk through the doorway into her classroom was all she needed to jump into action! She loved them dearly and each child knew it, no matter their age! Emily was a strong Christian and knew that God had blessed her with many gifts. She made it a habit to share these gifts with those she encountered each day. A strong determination to succeed afforded her opportunities that many might have thought could never be accomplished. Emily achieved many wonderful things throughout her years, being president of this civic group or that church group, but perhaps one of her greatest accomplishments occurred in 1982 when she was elected as the first female Commissioner in Johnson County. Emily retained that position for 30 years.

It seems that Emily's greatest joy, besides her family, was dedicating her time and talents to her church and her community. She was ALWAYS making a list to buy food for some civic event or cooking turkeys or chicken casseroles to serve at a community meal. She was ALWAYS serving and offering her 'service with a smile' to everyone she met.....and that smile!!! It would melt the heart of anyone who knew her and would draw strangers to her. It seems like she taught everyone in the county in one way or the other-----you, your children, your grandchildren, maybe even your great-grandchildren. She let God's love flow through her and His light gave her a purpose to share and give. Oh, that we all would be like that!! Our hearts may be full of sadness, but we must never forget this grand woman, the one who touched our lives so dearly. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mountain City, Maple Chapter #79 Order of the Eastern Star and the VFW Auxiliary.

Emily is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Anne and Allen Moody; grandsons, Christopher Moody (Jennifer) and Aaron Moody (Betsy); great grandchild, Maxton Reese Moody; several cousins, three nieces and one nephew and many, many special friends, too numerous to name each of you.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, at the First Baptist Church. Eastern Star service will follow at 8:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, March 3, 2016, at the First Baptist Church with Pastor Ricky Campbell to officiate. Guest speaker will be Mr. John Payne. Special music will be provided by Glenda Gray, Jack Proffitt and Kody Norris.

Dr. Truett Hayes Pierce, age 94, left his earthly body and arrived at his heavenly home on September 7, 2021. He was born on July 22, 1927 in Mountain City, TN, and spent his adult life serving the community and people of Sneedville, TN. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 during World War II and served on the USS Alabama; he was honorably discharged in 1946 and enrolled in ETSU, where he majored in chemistry and physics, and played the tuba in the marching band. It was here that he met his life-long love, Wanda, while she was on a trip with the Knoxville High School Orchestra. They continued dating by writing letters while he was in medical school at the University of Tennessee in Memphis. They were married June 20, 1953, the same week that he graduated from medical school. He then spent one year completing an internship at Knoxville General Hospital.

In 1954, Dr. Pierce moved to Sneedville with Wanda to help start the first Hancock County Hospital. He had originally planned to stay only temporarily, but soon fell in love with the people and community. Here he was instrumental in expanding the hospital to 60 beds with the help of his wife who served as nursing supervisor. He took pride in being a “country doctor,” often making house calls and working all hours of the night. He strived to be a living embodiment of Wanda’s favorite Bible verse, Luke 12:48: To whom much is given, much more is required.

During his 94 years, Dr. Pierce served many roles. He was a physician, hospital administrator, mayor of Sneedville, school board chairman, Shriner, member of Lions Club and Jaycees, board of directors for Farm Bureau, and the board of directors for Walters State Community College where he established two scholarships, and for Carson Newman where he established one. He was a devout Christian, first committing his life to Jesus as a child at Bethel Baptist Church in Mountain City and later as a member of First Baptist Church in Sneedville where he served as a deacon for over 5 decades. However, of all the hats he wore, he was proudest to be called the many titles he was called by his family; son, brother, uncle, husband, father, papaw, and great-papaw.

Dr. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents, David and Dora; brothers, Warren and Teddy; sister, Lenore; niece, Lisa; and beloved wife, Wanda. He leaves his memory and legacy to be carried on by his brother, Benny; daughters, Patricia, Nancy (Donnie Seal), and Janie (LJ Elliott); grandchildren, Brad (Mandy) Seal, Kim Seal, Tara Marion(Kenny), Ross Hopkins (Becky), Amanda Wray (Matt), and Drew Elliott; great-grandchildren Maylyn, Barrett, Allison, and Dane Seal; Brynlee and Paxton Marion; Dawn and Levi Hopkins; and Keaton, Hailey, and Greeah Wray; dear companion Bella the cat; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, church family, friends, and community.

Graveside service was held on Monday, September 13, 2021 at 2 P.M. in Butler, TN at Butler Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers: Donnie Seal, Brad Seal, Ross Hopkins, Kenny Marion, Lynn Greever, and LJ Elliott.

Mrs. Thelma Wil-lard Hamp-ton, 90, of John-son City, passed away Satur-day, April 11, 2015, in the John-son City Med-i-cal Center.
Mrs. Hamp-ton was a life long res-i-dent of John-son City. She was the daugh-ter of the late James El-bert and Anna Joe Vaughan Lowe.

Ted W. "Pawy" Lowe, 88, passed away, Wednesday, November 21st, 2018 peacefully at home, after a brief illness.

Pawy, as he was known to everyone, was born July 27th, 1930 in Washington County, TN to the late Leslie and Lola Lowe. He was a veteran of the US Air Force and served his country in the Korean War. Pawy worked at Klopman Mills, Coca Cola Bottling Co, and retired from EZ Painter. He was the oldest living member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, where he attended regularly until his health began to fail.

Pawy enjoyed taking his family on camping trips, working his garden, mowing his yard, and watching western movies. He had several trades, one being an electrician; he wired several homes for his family and working on appliances for friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Lowe and brother-in-law, Bill White.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Marie "Mawy" Lowe, of the home. Two daughters and son-in-law's; Kathy and Phil Blevins, Karen and Danny Burgess. Five grandchildren and their spouses; Michelle and Wesley Whaley, Tonya and Jesse Wilcox, Melissa and Tim Bailey, Josh and Jayne Hathaway, and Chad and Alecia Burgess. Thirteen great-grandchildren; Caitlyn and Corban Rodefer, Logan, Connor, Tanner, Hudson, and Tucker Bailey. Blake, Jude, Penelope, and Eden Hathaway. Madison and Mason Burgess. MOUNTAIN CITY - John B. Shoun, age 80 of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away, Monday, October 23, 2017, at Greystone Healthcare Center in Blountville, TN.

He was born on June 8, 1937, to the late Frank C. Shoun and Charlotte Elizabeth Bingham Shoun. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Kempie Shoun.

John was a wonderful (the very best ever) husband and father. He always had a calm demeanor and was a good neighbor. He loved going to Doe Valley Food Mart for coffee and always had his Levi Garrett chewing tobacco with him. He did not travel much but really enjoyed it when he did leave the farm. He was happiest when he was at home tending his cows and spending time with his family. He enjoyed helping others and spent his life doing so. He was a loyal "Ford Man" and loved Massey Ferguson tractors. John passing by in his red Ford pickup was a common and well recognized sight in Doe Valley. He had a special cat, Mama Cat and three very beloved grandpuppies Briggs, Piper, and the late Kayla. Johns life exemplified Christianity and was truly the last of a dying breed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years Carolyn A. Shoun; daughter, Elizabeth Leanne Shoun, and fiancé Scott Hodge, whom John thought of as a son; one sister, Carol Ann Shoun Clark and husband Robert ; one brother, Franklin Shoun, sister-in-law, Betty Parise and husband Ed; sister-in-law, Marilyn Cunningham and husband Dr. George Cunningham.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM on Saturday, October 28, 2017, from the Mountain City Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Gail Hartley, John Brookshire, and George Lowe officiating. Eulogy will be presented by nephew, Russell Parise. Honorary pallbearers and very special friends are Tom and Evelyn Dumond, Kevin Seatz, Glen Woodard, Jay Hodge, Kevin Proffitt, Danny Lowe, Keith Shatley, the late Dorsey Fletcher, Andy Isaacs, Bill Brookshire and John's coffee buddies from Doe Valley Food Mart.

Notes:

Donald Leonard Shoun, age 75 of Mountain City, passed away on Saturday, February 22, 2020. He was born February 19, 1945 to the late Thelma Stout. In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a special aunt who raised him from early childhood, Bernice “Bo” Shoun Stamper, an uncle, William Shoun, a son, Richard Shoun, a sister, Judy K. Wilson, and a brother, James Earl “Jim Bo” Stout.

Donald was a veteran of the United States Army, having retired from a military career.

Donald was a truck driver for many years and he truly enjoyed driving. He also loved antique cars and Nascar racing, especially Dale Earnhardt.

Those left to cherish his memories include a daughter Dawn Marie Morrison and husband Royce “Scooter” Morrison, Jr., a brother, Gary G. Stout, grandchildren, Jace Morrison, Bailey Morrison, Emilee Merritt, and Sydnee Merritt, nieces and nephews, Michael Essick and wife Jessie, Theresa McElyea and husband Tony, Sylvia Humphrey and husband Selmer, Jamie Stout, Shane Stout, as well as several great nieces and nephews, several cousins and special friends.

A memorial service will be held at Mountain City Funeral Home in March, with the exact date being announced later.

Judy Kay Wilson, age 64, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at her home. She was born June 1, 1954 in Johnson County, TN to the late Walter G. Stout and Thelma Lee Shoun Stout. In addition to her parents Judy was preceded in death one brother, James Earl "JimBo" Stout.

Judy loved her family and being with them. She loved her flowers and especially enjoyed going fishing. Judy was a faithful member of Southside Freewill Baptist Church where she was very active and supportive of the youth group.

Those left to share Judy's memory, in addition to her husband of 40 years, Donald E. Wilson, are her children, Mike Essick and wife Jessie, Theresa McElyea and husband Tony all of Mountain City, step- children, Michael Lee Wilson and wife Janet and Laura M. Slatton all of Knoxville, two brothers, Gary Stout of Lenoir, NC and Donald Shoun of Mountain City, grandchildren, Corey Essick and wife Anna and Jennifer Gardner and husband Cyrus, great- grandchildren, Kennedy Rose Essick, Tillian Reagan Essick, Clark Michael Gardner and Titus James Gardner, many nieces, nephews, cousins and her extended family.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday December 4, 2018 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Gary Hill and Richard Shepherd to officiate. Special music will be provided. Graveside service and burial will follow the funeral service from the Shoun- McEwen Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Corey Essick, Tony McElyea, Kenneth Grindstaff, Ronnie Fox, Dudley Wilson and Bob Taylor. Honorary Pallbearers are Jerry Stout, Jay Day, Don Shoun, Gary Stout, Tony Woodard and Cyrus Gardner.

Don and the family would like to express their sincere Thanks and Appreciation to the staff of Ballad Hospice and to Judy's caregivers for the last few years, Kim Taylor, Pat Woods, Goldie Luckett, Laura South, Sylvia Humphrey, Marie Dunn, Phyllis Macey and Cathy Clawson.
