Birth and death dates are approximate. He was the son of Wilborn G Campbell and Elizabeth B Morton Campbell. He was the husband of Nancy J Simerly Campbell, also buried in this cemetery.

He was the grandson of Zachariah Campbell, Jr. and the great-grandson of Zachariah Campbell Sr., an early settler along the Watauga River, in the area by about 1780, certainly by 1790.

Alex was a private in Co. B of the 4th Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, U.S.A. (Union). He was among those taken POW at McMinnville, Tenn. by Confederate forces. Several members of the 13th Regiment Tenn. Vol. Cav., U.S.A. and the 4th Regiment were involved in the Bridge Burnings that were planned by William Carter and personally approved by Abraham Lincoln. See the book, History of the Thirteenth Regiment Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry, U.S.A. by Scott and Angel (1903, reprint 1987) for a discussion of the Union loyalties of Carter County, especially the Hampton area. William Hunter Bowers, age 43, a well-known resident of Elizabethton died suddenly Tuesday 12:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be conducted from the First Free Will Baptist church Thursday afternoon at 5:00 o'clock with the Rev. William Cleary and Rev. Houston Blevins in charge. Interment will be in the Colbaugh cemetery.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Emma Grindstaff Bowers; two sons, Eugene and Howard Bowers, Elizabethton; one daughter, Miss Thelma Bowers, Elizabethton; three half-brothers, Frank Fitzsimmons, of the U.S. Army, Eugene Fitzsimmons, Elizabethton, and Grant Hardin, Elizabethton.

Myrtle M. Crow, age 103, 400 N. Boone St., Johnson City, died Wednesday, August 8, 2007, in Asbury Place at Johnson City following a brief illness.

She was a Carter County native and a daughter of the late John Tipton and Mattie Deloach Roberson. Mrs. Crow was a member of Harmony Baptist Church and the Senior Citizens Center of Elizabethton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ed Crow; two daughters, Joan Crow, Louise Hamby; one son, E.J. Crow; three brothers, Clyde, Mose and Floyd Roberson; and three sisters, Laura Garrison, Lena Kaigler and Ruby Bare.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Nannie Burton, Roberta and Delmer Lowe, all of Johnson City, Peggy and Terry McLemore, Cleveland, OH; twenty-one grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Hazel Roberson, Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mrs. Crow will be conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, August 10, in the Tetrick Funeral Home Riverside Chapel with Rev. Jerry Lyons officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Friday in the chapel prior to the service.

The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, August 11, in Happy Valley Memorial Park. Everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery at 9:55 a.m. Saturday. Active pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons.

She is survived by three daughters, JoAnn Hyer of Warren, Ohio, Shirley Greene and her husband, Carroll, of Clinton and Wilma Nichols and her husband, Philip, of Knoxville; and three sons, Donald Stevens and his wife, Dean, of Rockwood, Ralph Stevens and his wife, Brenda, of Clinton and Michael Stevens and his wife, Eleanor, of Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Stevens is also survived by her brother, Maynard Bowers of Hampton, Tenn.; her sister, Pauline Comer of West Newton, Pa.; and by 22 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, two other sons, C.L. Stevens Jr. and Richard Lee Stevens, died earlier.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The Rev. Dwight Bass will officiate.

Mrs. Deloach was a native of Carter County and the daughter of the late E.T. "Doc" and Arwilda Williams Deloach. She was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Whitehead, in 1998, three sisters, four brothers and a great-grandson.

Mrs. Deloach attended Friendship Free Will Baptist Church of Hampton. She was a former employee of Big B Restaurant.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Richard Sheek, Cleveland, N.C., and Wilma and Charles Lyons, Elizabethton, and a brother, Albert Deloach, Hampton. Twelve grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews also survive.

HAMPTON - Mr. Albert James Deloach, 85, of Hampton, passed away unexpectedly, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital on Friday, December 2, 2016. He was a son of the late E.T. and Wilda Williams Deloach and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Fay Marrs Deloach; a granddaughter, Jocelyn Hendrix; four sisters and four brothers.

Mr. Deloach was a former member and past deacon at Hampton First Baptist Church where he worked with the Royal Ambassadors for twenty years and was currently a member of Hampton Christian Church. He was a willing volunteer, delivered Meals on Wheels and was a "handyman" for the ladies of the church. He spent sixty years enjoying and working in his garden and he also was an accomplished woodworker. He was retired from Sperry-Univac where he was a supervisor.

Those left to cherish his memory include two daughters, Gwen Hendrix, Hampton; Libby Shipley and her husband, Bobby, Jonesborough; a son and daughter-in-law, Tony & Ginger Deloach, Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Heather Hopland and her husband, Kenny, Elizabethton; Curry Deloach, Johnson City; Glenna Fine and her husband, Anthony, Johnson City; Karen Lester and her husband, Derrick, Jonesborough; Amy Shipley, Jonesborough; and seven great-grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Deloach will be conducted at 7:00 PM, on Monday, December 5, 2016, at Hampton Christian Church with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, and Rev. Mike Stout officiating. Mr. Mark Grindstaff will be delivering the eulogy. Music will be under the direction of the church. The family will receive friends in the church from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Monday prior to the service, and at his home, or at the homes of any of the family members, at other times.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted on Tuesday, December 6, 2016, at 11:00 AM at Happy Valley Memorial Park. JOHNSON CITY - Arlene Beatrice Stinson, age 73 of Johnson City, TN, went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, September 14, 2022 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was a native of Hampton, Tennessee and was a daughter of the late Carmal and Fannie Bell Glover Jackson. Arlene retired from Wal-Mart after 28 years of service. She loved baking, her family, especially her grandchildren and her dog, Charlie. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her siblings, Arnold Jackson, Gene Jackson, and Joyce Woodby.

Arlene was born on January 11, 1949, in Hampton, TN. She graduated from South Greene High School in 1967. She married the love of her life, Boyd, in 1971. They welcomed Wesley in 1976 and Brian in 1978.

1 John 4:7 tells us, “God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him”. Arlene was the perfect embodiment of the love of Jesus Christ. She was kind, caring, and compassionate. Arlene was a friend to everyone she met. She was a loving wife and mother and adored her grandchildren.

Arlene is survived by her husband, Robert Boyd Stinson, sons Wesley (Danielle) and Brian (Ashley), grandchildren, Megan, Josh, McKinnley, Noah, Emily, Isaiah, Taylor, and Elin, great-grandchild, Gage, and siblings, Lois Ragno and Roy Jackson; also several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service for Arlene is scheduled for Friday, September 23, 2022 at Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. Gary Hill officiating. A native of Johnson City, she was a daughter of the late Dave and Ida Morton Campbell. Mrs. Hemphill was a member of Rich Acres Freewill Baptist Church, Johnson City. She was a loving mother, grandmother and sister. Mrs. Hemphill loved going to church and spending time with her family. David was a staff sergeant in the National Guard, having served for 12 1/2 years. He was a member of the Johnson City Free Will Baptist Church and had volunteered as a chaplain with the Johnson City Police Department David had been the director of youth baseball with the Johnson City Pony League and had been an umpire and referee with Johnson City Parks and Recreation for many years. He was a member of the Arcana Masonic Lodge #489, Limestone. Survivors include his wife, Joan Campbell; three sons, David Wayne Campbell and his wife, Paula, Johnson City, Michael Lee Campbell and his wife, Lori, Knoxville, and Pfc. Eugene Bowers, 76, 704 S. Riverside Drive, Elizabethton, died Monday, July 3, 2000, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.

Mr. Bowers was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Hunter and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Goforth, and his stepfather, Agee D. Williams.

Mr. Bowers was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church of Elizabethton and a retired mechanical draftsman with Great Lakes Research Corporation.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Edens Bowers, of the home; a daughter, Debra Bowers Pierce, Elizabethton; a brother and sister-in-law, J. J. Howard "Lefty" Bowers, 90, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on Sunday, October 29, 2017, at The Waters of Johnson City, Tenn. He was a native of Elizabethton, Tenn., and son of the late Hunter Bowers and Emma Crosswhite Bowers. Howard's hobbies were running, weightlifting, bicycle riding, golf, and horseback riding. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, son, three granddaughters and great-granddaughter and also watching his son and granddaughters play sports. Howard also donated his time by volunteering at ETSU, Holston Habitat for Humanity, and the Veterans Administration.
Howard proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Howard held a Doctorate of Education from the University of Tennessee where he was a research associate and retired as Professor of Education at East Tennessee State University. He taught at Unaka Elementary, coached football at Unaka High School and Tennessee High where he was also a health and science teacher. Mr. Bowers then taught at Elizabeth City Elementary and Jr. High schools and was the school superintendent in Elizabeth City schools.
In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his step-father, Agee Williams; his brother, Eugene Bowers; and his sister, Thelma Goforth.
Those left to cherish Howard's memory include his loving wife, Rowena Shipley Bowers; son, Rick Bowers; granddaughters, Emma Bowers of Greenville, S.C., Hannah Bowers and Rachel Bowers of Jonesborough, Tenn.; nephew, Kenneth Goforth of Kingsport, Tenn.; niece, Debra Gene Pierce of Elizabethton, Tenn.; sister-in-law, Mary Bowers of Elizabethton, Tenn.; step-sister, Elaine Profitt; and several cousins.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Mose and Pauline Proffitt Robinson.
Lena was employed as a secretary with Thompson Truck Lines for a number of years. She was of the Baptist Faith. Her hobbies were cooking, raising horses and horseback riding.
Survivors include her husband of 44 years, John Cris Brewer Sr.; three children, John Cris Brewer Jr., Clinton, Tenn., Jason Jerome Brewer, with the U.S. Army stationed in Alaska, and Emma Lea Deprimo, Johnson City; seven grandchildren; nine sisters and two brothers; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Roberta C. Lowe, age 79, Johnson City, passed away, Thursday, December 22, 2011, at her residence.

Mrs. Lowe was a native of Carter County who had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was the daughter of the late Ed Crowe and Myrtle Robison Crowe.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Delmer W. Lowe; two sisters, JoAnn Crowe and Louise Hamby; one brother, Edward J. Crowe; one great grandson, Luke Smalling.

Mrs. Lowe was a homemaker and lifelong Christian. She was married to the love of her life for sixty-one years and was a caring and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family will always remember her for her kind and gentle spirit.

ELIZABETHTON - William "Bill" Russell Roberson, age 71, of Elizabethton went home to be with the Lord on his birthday, Saturday, May 28, 2016, from the Hillview Health Care Center of Elizabethton, following an extended illness.

He was a native of Carter County and the son of the late Floyd Charles Roberson and Margaret Virginia (Dye) Roberson. He was a member of Keenburg Free Will Baptist Church. He was a carpenter and a dedicated caregiver to his mother and father until their death. He was also an avid outdoorsman.

Other than his mother and father, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Elbert Roberson.

Bill leaves behind to cherish his memories, two brothers, Kermit C. Roberson and wife Reba, of Jonesborough and Floyd Walker Roberson and wife Diane, of Elizabethton; three sisters, Joyce Loving, of Jonesborough, Jeanette Fitzwater and husband Jim, of Morristown, and Wilma Lyons and husband Jerry, of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mr. Bowers was born in Wise County, Virginia, and son of the late Arthur & Allie Miller Bowers. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bowers was preceded in death by his first wife, Anne K. Bowers; mother of his children, second wife, Wanda B. Bowers; step-mother, Pearl Bowers; sister, Betty Jo Wagner; granddaughter, Ann M. Bowers; and a son-in-law, Jim Blakeney.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Norton Virginia.
Mr. Bowers was a United States WWII Navy Veteran, having served in the South Pacific and South Atlantic. He was an auto parts store manager after the war, a coal mine owner and operator, real estate developer, an artist, and a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Vearl Hagan Bowers, 91, of Alexandria, VA passed peacefully at his home on October 18, 2017. He was born to the late Earl and Gladys Bowers of Elizabethton, TN.

At the age of 9 he moved to the DC area, and then later to Alexandria. Vearl worked at Safeway after school until the age of 16, when he joined the U.S. Navy- serving in WWII on the LST Ship # 1066. Upon returning home from the war, he started working back as Safeway as a Butcher, and then later becoming the Manager of the meat department; retiring in 1978. Vearl was a member of the Masonic Lodge #219, the Mt. Vernon Tall Cedar Lodge, and the Antique Automobile Club. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Vearl is predeceased by his brother; Herbert Bowers; and his first wife, Edythe Bowers. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, three daughters and their husbands, a son, an honorary son, four grandsons, and a great-grandson.

She was a teacher’s assistant with special needs at Valley Forge Elementary School. Melody was a member of New Hope Ministries but attended Hampton First Baptist Church. Herman Ray Deloach, 80, Hampton, Tn. went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday July 7, 2021. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Bill & Lottie Byrd Deloach. Herman was a 1960 graduate of Hampton High School . He was preceded in death by his wife Dottie Deloach and brothers, Eddie & Emmit and sister: Phyllis Deloach. He attended Friendship Free Will Baptist Church. He worked as a pipe fitter for 35 years at Beaunit Fibers & North American Rayon Corporation. Wanda DeLoach Sheek, 75, of Cleveland, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2018, at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born December 25, 1942 in Hampton, Tenn., she was the daughter of the late Maggie DeLoach.
Ms. Sheek was educated in the Hampton, Tenn. schools and graduated from Hampton High School, Class of 1961.
She was employed for Cone Mills for 25 years and later Jockey Industries before retiring. Following retiring she was a caregiver who touched the lives of many.
Ms. Sheek was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church, Cooleemee.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Richard Sheek, on November 29, 2000; a son, Richard "Ritchie" Clark Sheek, on June 17, 2007; and a brother, Johnny Whitehead.
Those left to cherish her memory are her sons, David Lee Greenwell and wife Tammy of Wake Forest, and Darby Keith Sheek and wife Beth of Troutman; sister, Wilma DeLoach of Elizabethton, Tenn.; grandchildren, Keith Sheek of Pinehurst, Joshua Wyatt and wife Angela of Statesville, Tatum Greenwell and Ethan Greenwell of Wake Forest; and great-grandchildren, Liam, Kadyn and Keegan.

ELIZABETHTON - Emmert “Ray” Loveless, 68 of Elizabethton, TN went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, August 06, 2021, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was the son of the late Tempie Loveless. He was a faithful member and deacon of Little Mountain Baptist Church, where he enjoyed playing bass guitar. He was a retired carpenter and owner of Loveless Cabinet Tops. He enjoyed spending time with his family especially his grandchildren and great grandchild.

In addition to his mother he was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Loveless and dear brother in Christ, C. W. Snodgrass, Jr. Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 50 years Brenda Franklin Loveless of the home. Daughters: Tina Cole (Tim Willis) of Unicoi, Kim Norris (Thomas) of Watauga, TN. Three Grandchildren Linsey Cole, Dalton Norris and Cheyenne Norris. One Great Grandchild: Blaiklyn Cole. GILBERT, SC - Chrisley Jay Loveless, 66, of Gilbert, SC on January 7, 2023 surrounded by his family at home. Chris was born and grew up in Elizabethton, TN. After graduating from Happy Valley High School in 1974, he worked for several manufacturing and retail stores in management. More importantly to him, Chris (Jay to his people in Elizabethton) began to work with several bands in Johnson City, TN before joining the band Hickory Switch and traveling around the west. It was there that he met the love of his life Mary on August 5, 1985. The two were engaged in August 23, 1985 and Chris married Mary and her 2 children on November 9, 1985. The next 4 years welcomed 2 more children in 1986 and 1989 and a move to Gilbert, SC in 1991 where they raised their family.

Chris is preceded in death by his mother Tempie D. Loveless, and 2 brothers Leonard Clay and Emmert Ray Loveless. He is survived by his wife Mary, his daughter Anita Shelek (Todd) in Wheeling, WV, his son Danny Jumer (Norma) in Gilbert, SC, his daughter Aubrey Vaughn in Columbia, SC, and his son Forrest Loveless in Gilbert, SC; two sisters, Evelyn Stroud, of Statesville, NC, Gaye Loveless, of Elizabethton, TN; two sister's-in-law, Brenda Loveless, of Elizabethton, TN and Linda Loveless, of WY; along with 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild on the way and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Chris was a force of nature, determined to provide for his family and give them the life he felt the deserved. His family was his whole world.

The family will have a service to honor the life of Chrisley “Jay” Loveless on Saturday January 14th, 2023 at 1 pm with Pastor Charles Swann officiating and Aubrey Vaughn will be presenting the eulogy. They will receive friends from 12-1 pm prior to the service. The graveside service will follow at Loveless-Woodby family cemetery. Jack A. Campbell age, 78 of Elizabethton passed away Friday, June 14, 2019, at James H. Quillen VA Medical Center in Johnson City. He was the son of the late Earl and Dessie Loraine McNeil Campbell. In addition to his two parents, he was also preceded in death by his brother; Rev. Earl Campbell and three sisters; Bonnie Campbell, Christine Smith & Pauline Shaw.

Mr. Campbell was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was the owner and operator of Campbells' Folsom Printing Company, of Elizabethton, for over 30 years. He was also employed by the Elizabethton Star for 38 years where he worked in the advertising department. He attended Valley Forge Freewill Baptist Church. Jack was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was an avid UT fan and had a passion for education. He served on the Elizabethton City School Board for 10 years and served on the Carter County Commission. He was also a member of the Cyclone Touchdown Club and a member of the Betsy Band Booster Club. He enjoyed gathering daily with his coffee club friends. He also loved being on Watauga Lake with his family and friends, riding jet skis, and he also enjoyed spending time in Florida during the winter.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years; Beatrice "Bea" Calhoun Campbell of the home, two sons; Jackie Campbell and wife Teresa of Elizabethton, Jason Campbell and wife Courtney of Elizabethton, sister; Martha Stout of North Carolina, six grandchildren; Morgan Noack and husband Bryan of Fort Worth, Texas, Alexandra Campbell of Elizabethton, Taylor Campbell of Elizabethton, Sophie Peterson of Elizabethton, Jonathan Glover of Johnson City and Allison Glover of Johnson City. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Campbell will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Monday, June 17, 2019 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home Elizabethton with Pastor Mark Potter officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and may visit at the home at any time.

The graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 18, 2019, at Monte Vista Memorial Park. Henry A. "Bud" Glover, 80, of Hampton, passed away Friday, October 7, 2016, at his residence following an extended illness. He was a native of Carter County.
Bud was a mechanic and construction worker. He was a lifetime member of the Hampton Fire Department and a member of the CERTS Committee and Storm Watchers. He attended Moores Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Ann Stout Glover; two daughters, Tina Edge and husband Duane, Lithia, Fla., and Jennifer Glover, Roan Mountain; three step-sons, Heath, Greg and Daniel Largent; grandchildren, Travis and Shawn Edge, Amanda, Chelsie and Hunter Largent and Chris Rainey; five great-grandchildren; one brother, John Edward Glover Sr., Hampton; two sisters, Nancy "Twettie" Stevens, Hampton, and Mary Ethel Demarco, Hopewell, Va.; several nieces and nephews; and two special friends, Kathy Hill and Travis Simerly.

Keith Campbell, 69, of the Little Milligan Community of Butler, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 14, 2023, at his home. Keith was born in Elizabethton to the late Kyle and Ethel (Smith) Campbell. Keith had worked in the twisting unit at North American Rayon Corporation and had also worked at Timberland in Mountain City. Keith enjoyed anything outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also liked to cook and being with his dogs. Those left to remember and cherish Keith’s memory include his wife, Phyllis (Davenport) Campbell, of the home; his sons, Mason Campbell of Butler and Charles (Jennifer) Campbell of Kingsport; two grandchildren, Jude Campbell and Moriah Campbell; a brother, Steve Campbell of Elizabethton; two sisters, Nelda (Doug) Hatley of Butler and Patricia (Maurice) Widener of Mountain City; and a special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, George and Melissa Davenport. ELIZABETHTON - Pennye Darlene Campbell Cable, 75, Elizabethton passed away Monday, January 9, 2023 in the Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Jessie Willard & Edith Maxine Johnson Campbell. Pennye was a 1965 graduate of Hampton High School. She was a former Carter County School Bus Driver and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Chapter 17. Pennye was a member of Union Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Elwood Cable, a son: Vonell Chris Cable and a sister: Andrea Beth Campbell.

Survivors include a son & daughter-In-law: Marty & Crystal Cable. A Granddaughter & her husband: Callie & Ethan Miller. A Great-Granddaughter: Alex Paisley McKinney. A Brother-In-Law: Terry Lewis. Several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

ELIZABETHTON - Ray Glover, 81, of Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, October 1, 2022, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital, from injuries suffered from a fall earlier in the week. He passed peacefully with his family by his bedside.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Jeanette, of the home; daughter Renee Erwin and her husband, Jeff, of Elizabethton; son Boyd “Chip” Glover of Fort Lauderdale, FL; granddaughter April Reece and her husband, Aaron, of Elizabethton; and great-grandson Dawson Reece, of Elizabethton. Ray is also survived by a sister, Nell Taylor, and her husband Larry, of Mount Carmel, TN; a brother, Johnny Glover, and his wife Judy, of Hampton, TN. Several nieces and nephews also survive, including a very close nephew, Josh Taylor, of Bradenton, FL.

Ray was the son of the late Boyd Carter Glover and Mattie Mosler and was born on December 7, 1940, in Carter County. He was a 1959 graduate of Elizabethton High School. He then joined the United States Army and was stationed in Ansbach Germa-ny with the 4th Missile Battalion, 28th Artillery (Lacrosse Missile).

After completing his military service in 1962, Ray became a businessman in East Ten-nessee and Kentucky. Ray and his wife, Jeanette, spent almost 25 years as the owners of Glover Theaters, which included theaters such as the Bonnie Kate, State Line Drive-In, Jolly Roger, Flatwoods Drive-In, and the Cougar Drive-In. Ray and Jeanette also owned and operated Capitol Discount and Brittney’s in Elizabethton. In addition, Ray served as a mentor to Chip with his business, All-Star Card Company.

Ray’s many interests included watching classic movies, especially westerns of the 1930s and 1940s, going to film festivals, flea markets, and traveling—including over a dozen trips to China. He served for many years on the City of Elizabethton’s Baseball Commission and attended the Elizabethton Twins minor league baseball games. After his retirement from his own businesses, Ray enjoyed working for his good friend, Wille McVey, at Valley Forge Auction and Wholesale where the employees and cus-tomers were like family to him.

Ray never met a stranger and leaves behind many wonderful friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, October 5, at 7 p.m. at East Side Free Will Baptist Church in Elizabethton, under the direction of Pastor Justin Deaton. The family will receive friends from 6 until 7 p.m. before the service.

The Entombment Service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday October 6, 2022 in the Mausole-um of Faith, Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be chosen from his honor-ary pallbearers, family, and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Jeff Erwin, Larry Taylor, Josh Taylor, Aaron Reece, Willie McVey, Bill Vaught, C.Y.
