JANE SIMERLY
Mrs. Jane Simerly, age 90, died at her home Roan Mt. Rt. 2, Saturday a.m. at eleven o'clock after a long illness. Mrs. Simerly was one of the oldest citizens of Carter County. She was a member of the Methodist Church.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. John Street of McMinnville, Ore.; five sons, J. L. Simerly of Roan Mountain, Chester and Martin Simerly of McMinnville, Ore., Ross Simerly of Johnson City, L. H. Simerly of Hampton, Route 1; one brother, Swin Gouge of Roan Mountain; thirty-one grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be conducted from the home Monday a.m. at 10:00 o'clock with the Rev. Tom Arnett officiating.
Burial will be made in the family cemetery.

Laura Ellen Gouge Benfield was born on Feb. 12, 1883, in Carter County, TN where she resided her entire life. She was the daughter of Calvin and Kathryn McKinney Gouge, and was their 5th child. She had 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

On November 18, 1905, she married Marion Brownlow Benfield, in Carter County, TN. Laura and Marion had 3 daughters, 3 sons and 11 grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her oldest son, Walter Massey Benfield.

Laura died April 1, 1962 in Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, TN, following a lengthy illness. She was 80 years old. At the time of her death she was a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain.

Her funeral was held at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton. Following she was buried at Monte Vista Cemetery on Oakland Avenue, in Johnson City, TN. Laura's grave adjoins her husband Marion, son Walter "Walt" and daughter in law.

Howard S. Gouge Sr., 88, Dave Buck Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Dosser and Minnie Winters Gouge. Mr. Gouge was a retired produce salesman and carpenter. He was
of the Baptist faith. He had served in the U.S. Army and Coast Guard and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D.C. Byrd and the Rev. John Vance officiating.
Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gouge Family Cemetery (Heaton Ridge Road), Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, will be Buddy Davis, Danny Davis, Nathan Gouge, Patrick Gouge, Joshua Gouge and Eugene Gouge.

Vaughn Simerly Sr., 90, Hampton, passed away Monday, November 28, 2022, at Hillview Health Center. He was born May 26, 1932 in McMinnville, Ore., to the late Linzy and Velma Hyder Simerly. He had lived most of his life in Carter County.
Vaughn served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from the Maintenance Department of East Tennessee State University.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Vaughn Simerly Jr.; three brothers, Gene Gordon Simerly, Sam Simerly and William Bob Simerly; and one sister, Selma Simerly.
Survivors include his wife, Delores Stevens Simerly; a daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Joey McNeil; a daughter-in-law, Julia Simerly; and two grandsons, Keith McNeil and Justin Simerly. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Jim Holtsclaw officiating. Interment will follow in the Stevens Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Justin Simerly, Joey McNeil, Keith McNeil, Ed Birchfield, Wayne Johnson and Jimmy Woodby. Honorary pallbearers will be Byrl Clark, John L. McKinney, Carl Lacey, Jamie McKinney and Greg Burrell. Verl Shell, 87, of 110 Tom Birchfield Road, Roan Mountain, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 1, 2015, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Verl was born in Carter County on February 22, 1928, a son of the late Arthur and Dovie Street Shell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Ennie Shell Shell; his second wife, Christine Johnson Shell; three brothers, Fred, Eddie Joe and Bert Shell; and one sister, Willie Cox.
Verl retired as a machine operator at North American Rayon Corporation and was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed watching NASCAR races, talking politics, and working in his yard and garden. He was very loved by his family and will be missed dearly by his family and many friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include his three children, Bill Shell and wife Sarah, Damascus, Va., Teddy Shell, of the home, and LeDonna Hughes and husband Joey, Johnson City; his eight grandchildren, Wendy Gibbons and husband Dean, Cody Shell and wife Ashley, Justin Shell and wife Nichole, Jessica Shell, Heather Gibson, Haley Hughes and fiancé Dustin Clawson, Ashley Otey and Brandon Otey; several great-grandchildren; one brother, William D. Shell and wife Norma Lou, Elizabethton; and two sisters, Frankie Cox and Jean Timmons and husband Bob, all of Roan Mountain. Several nieces and nephews, along with his best buddy, "Champ," also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Verl Shell will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, October 5, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Todd Wolfe, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Jennifer Sizemore. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, October 4, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain. The graveside service will follow the funeral service on Monday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Verl's breakfast buddies at Happy's Café, Dr. Jeffery Schoondyke and Myron Phillips.

On Wednesday, March 3, 2021, Vern C. Shell, 82, went home to be with the Lord while at his residence. Vern was born in Carter County to the late Frank Shell and Glenna Birchfield Shell. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Vaughn Shell and Ricky Shell, one infant sister, Melba Jean Shell, two sisters-in-law, Janice Thompson and Tammy Plank.

Vern was a graduate of Lamar High School. He was retired from General Motors in Flint, Michigan. He was a member and greeter of Cherry Grove Baptist Church. He was a member of the UAW Local 659 in Flint Michigan. He loved to be doing yard work and taking his grandchildren for rides on the lawn mower. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carol “Cookie” Scott Shell. Two sons, David Shell (Angie) and Mike Shell. 4 grandchildren, Tara Moore (Brad), Zachary Shell (Brittany), Taylor Shell and Emily Shell. One great-granddaughter, Lexie Moore, Two sisters, Norma Trent and Roma “Teddy” Moore and many special nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank the Cleveland Clinic, Amedisys Hospice and Dr. James Hanson and nurses.

Funeral services for Vern C. Shell will be conducted on Saturday, March 6, 2021 at 1:00 P.M. at the Cherry Grove Baptist Church of Jonesborough with Pastor Tommy Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Cherry Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Mike Hensley, Luke Cole, Scott Brall, Earl Hughes, Logan Bolton and David Hopson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Povolny, Bartley Sparks, Henry Reaves Ted Thompson and members of the Adult 4 Sunday School Class.

JOHNSON CITY - John M. Young, 89, of Johnson City died Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at the Abundant Living Care Center. He was a native of Bakersville, North Carolina, son of the late Ernest Frank and Ruth Evangeline Slagle Young.

John was a retired accountant for the Volunteer Natural Gas Company since 1980 after 27 years of service. He continued working at Edwards and Associates and the Sundance Group Inc. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

He was a member of the Central Baptist Church since 1953.

In addition to his parents, a sister Mary Kathleen Young and granddaughter Haley Paige Young all preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Dolores White Young; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Dennis Davenport of Johnson City; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Lora Young of Johnson City, Bruce and Revonda Young of Asheville, NC and Michael and Marcia Young of Lakeville, MA; nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 8, 2021 from 2-4:00 pm at the Central Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 pm under the direction of Rev. Gene Elliott and Rev. Tony Martin will provide music. A committal service will be conducted on Monday, August 9, 2021 at 10:00 am in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

He was a native and lifelong resident of Johnson City and the son of the late James Eugene and Mary Alice Green.

Cecil was a graduate of Science Hill High School and Georgia Tech, where he received a degree in Civil Engineering with honors and was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.

He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Corps of Engineers.

Cecil was the Chairman of the Board of J.E. Green Company and a past president of the Tennessee State Branch, Associated General Contractors of America, and the Associated General Contractors Tri-Cities Branch. He also served on the board of directors of Hamilton Bank, in the Construction Division of the United Way campaign, and as a trustee of Washington College Academy.

He was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church, Johnson City.

Cecil was also a member of the Johnson City Rotary Club and the Hurstleigh Club.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ida Lois Green.

Survivors include: his wife, Sandra Graf Green; sons, James F. (Lisa) Green, Stephen Lawrence Green, and John David (Amy) Green; daughter, Mary Catharine (Greg) McMullen; sister, Katie (Ernest) Walker; and seven grandchildren, Taylor (Maggie) and Bailey (Niki) Green, Natalie (Daniel) Woodall, Oscar, Anna Catharine, and Aidan McMullen, and Peter Green; nephews Charles Wilson and Ernest E. Walker, and niece Leanne Walker Cox.

Carl Blevins, 89, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2018, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he was the son of the late Frank and Pearl Byrd Blevins.
Mr. Blevins was retired as a carpenter. He attended Hopson Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. He enjoyed doing yard work.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Iva Lee Blevins, and his brothers, Kenneth Blevins, William "Bill" Blevins and Leonard Blevins.

Georgia Ray Tolley, 75, loving mother and grandmother, entered into eternal rest with our Lord on Tuesday, August 11, 2021, peacefully at her home in the Fairview Community of Hampton, Tenn.
Growing up as a child in the Tiger Creek Community, Georgia was the daughter of Frank and Pearl Caroline Byrd Blevins. She married the love of her life, Cecil, at the age of 16, and they moved to the Simerly Creek Community of Fairview. The couple was married 54 years and parents to five children.
Georgia was of the Freewill Baptist Faith, a homemaker and caregiver. She loved to farm, garden and quilt, grow crops of tobacco/flowers and care for her many animals over the decades such as dogs/cats, chickens, goats, and doves. Many a family member or neighborhood friend was welcome to eat a meal, tell a story or drink a cup of coffee, especially during the holidays. She never met a stranger and always wanted to make people laugh.
In her later years, she was an avid collector of Cabbage Patch dolls and enjoyed making them new again for “Granny’s Cabbage Patch Garden.” She cared for her ailing husband for more than 20 years and her youngest granddaughter Courtney with whom she shared a special bond.
Georgia was preceded in death by her husband Cecil in 2016, her much loved dog “Bubba” and her granddaughter Victoria Faith McQueen.
Georgia is survived by the couple’s children, Betty and Jobe Tolley, Kitty (Marshall Simerly) Tolley, son Cecil Wayne Tolley, all of Hampton, and daughters Shelby and David McQueen and Annie and Danny McQueen of Elizabethton; her granddaughters, Danielle (Bobby Furches) and Abigail Bates, Alexandria McQueen (Logan) Craft, Katarina McQueen (David) Finney and Izabella Sue Davida McQueen, Courtney Tolley, and a grandson Jobe Tolley “JT”, as well as her great-grandchildren, Elana and Joshua Furches, Lucas Bates and Nathan Peters. Special friends/family, Mabel Tolley, Brenda Tipton, Junior Blevins, Norman Coffey, Freddie Jack Davis, and Landon Lingerfelt, her first son-in-law, with whom she shared many a cup of Nescafe coffee and a joke with, survive along with extended siblings and family members.
A graveside service will take place on Saturday, August 14, at 11 a.m. at the Tolley-Cornett Cemetery in the Fairview Community located off Whittemore Road. The Rev. Shane Whittemore will officiate with some of Georgia’s favorite songs of “I’ll Fly Away,” “Gathering Flowers For The Master’s Bouquet,” and “Life’s Railway to Heaven” being played. The family requests that anyone attending the service please wear a mask. He was a US Army Veteran and had also worked at Brown’s Supermarket in Hampton for many years. He was a Master Gardner and loved to give things out of the garden away. He was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Shonette Cutlip Tolley who passed away July 24, 2016; by a granddaughter: Amber Shaw Calhoun; and also 10 brothers and sisters.

She had lived in Alabama for a number of years. Mrs. Hampton was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two husbands, Sgt. Mathey G. Cole and M.B. Hampton, and by three brothers and three sisters. Those left behind to cherish her memory include her son, Jeff Hampton, and her daughters, Jennifer Farrow, Jill Hampton and Joy Hampton. Local survivors include her sisters, Geneva Roberts and Shirl Davis, and three brothers, Jack, Herman and Wade Tolley. Also several grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive. Mahala raised two of her grandchildren as her own, Zachery and Abigail.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late John & Biddie Hill Hilman of Roan Mountain.

She worked at Magnavox for 10 years and was a care giver for several years.

Mrs. Birchfield was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church.

JOHNSON CITY - John M. Young, 89, of Johnson City died Wednesday, August 4, 2021 at the Abundant Living Care Center. He was a native of Bakersville, North Carolina, son of the late Ernest Frank and Ruth Evangeline Slagle Young.

John was a retired accountant for the Volunteer Natural Gas Company since 1980 after 27 years of service. He continued working at Edwards and Associates and the Sundance Group Inc. He was a former member of the Kiwanis Club.

He was a member of the Central Baptist Church since 1953.

In addition to his parents, a sister Mary Kathleen Young and granddaughter Haley Paige Young all preceded him in death.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 68 years, Dolores White Young; a daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Dennis Davenport of Johnson City; three sons and three daughters-in-law, Mark and Lora Young of Johnson City, Bruce and Revonda Young of Asheville, NC and Michael and Marcia Young of Lakeville, MA; nineteen grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren.

Ivory Hill Lewis, age 88, of Elizabethton, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 3, 2015, at her residence.

Ivory was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late Dana and Ethel Connie Lacey Hill. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Raymond Keith Lewis, Sr. on December 16, 2007; a daughter, Linda Ivory Ramsey on May 2, 2009; a grandson, Wayne Davis II; a son-in-law, Wayne Davis; a half sister, Sally Pierce; and a half brother, Bill Hill.

Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker, but along with her husband, had previously owned and operated Lewis' Service Station. She was a member of Union Baptist Church and was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Davis, of Hampton and Glenna Morton, of Elizabethton; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ray Lewis, Jr. and wife Maxine and "Randy" Lewis and wife Eddie, all of Elizabethton, and Rex Lewis and wife Angela, Johnson City; six grandchildren, Wendi Kasting and husband Chris, Johnson City, John Ramsey, Jr. and wife Christa, Elizabethton, Ronnie Heaton, Jr. and wife Felicia, Elizabethton, Summer Morton, Ria Davis and Jessica Lindsey, all of Johnson City; ten great grandchildren; three half sisters, Mary Shultz and husband Bill, Lenoir City, Susie Moody and husband Bob, Butler, and Jane Lyons, Elizabethton; and two half brothers, Herman Hill and wife Kay, and Johnny Hill and wife Freda, all of Hampton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service to honor the life of Mrs. Ivory Hill Lewis will be conducted at 2:30 PM on Friday, February 6, 2015 in the Union Baptist Church Cemetery in Hampton, Tennessee, with Rev. Danny Bright, officiating. Active pallbearers will be John Ramsey, Jr., Ronnie Heaton, Jr., Chris Kasting, John Evan Ramsey, Ronald Ritchie, Daniel Lewis, Karl Grindstaff, Bill Shoun and Bobby Glover.

Roma Jean Mathes, age 81, of Elizabethton, TN, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Paul Tolley and Goldie Carver Hall and was born on August 14, 1938. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of forty-nine years, Gene Mathes; one son, John Paul Mathes and her step-father, Luther Hall.

Roma Jean was a devoted wife, mother and nanny. She was a determined woman of faith and was a member of Valley Forge Christian Church. She enjoyed watching college basketball, especially Duke and cooking for her family.

Those left to cherish her memory include three children, Debbie Bunton and husband Jimmy, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and girlfriend Debbie Buckles all of Elizabethton; six grandchildren, April Fox and husband Mark of Vass, NC, J.P. Mathes and wife Leona of Elizabethton, Cody Bunton and wife Andrea of Jonesborough, Jeanna Brewer and husband Nathaniel of Gray, Kristin Mathes and Jagger Mathes both of Elizabethton and four great-grandchildren. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, friends and neighbors also survive.

The family will be holding a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, December 21, 2019, at Miller Cemetery located next to the State Line Drive-In.

J. D. Birchfield, 71, of Johnson City, passed away unexpectedly Monday, January 28, 2019, at his residence. He was born October 9, 1947 in Roan Mountain to the late Ray and Vicie Hilman Birchfield.
J.D. was retired as a tree trimmer. He was of the Baptist Faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronnie Birchfield, and a brother-in-law, Perry Bradford.
Survivors include his sisters, Sue Bradford, Elizabethton, and Patsy Griffey and husband Otis, Butler, and a brother, Jack Birchfield, Elizabethton. Survivors also include his nieces, Rebecca Willens and husband Travis, Elizabethton, and Lori Helmick and D.J. Helmick, Roan Mountain. He had many great-nieces and great-nephews.
Funeral services for J.D. Birchfield will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, February 1, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Charlie Trivette officiating. Interment will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Melvin Myers and Junior Guinn.

Mrs. Linda Lewis Ramsey, 62,Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord following a courageous battle with ALS, on Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Mrs. Ramsey was a native of Carter County and the daughter of Ivory Hill Lewis of Elizabethton and the late Raymond Keith Lewis, Sr. She was a member of Union Baptist Church where she served as the organist for many years. She was a dedicated RN who worked in Hospice care. She was the most loving and caring mother and grandmother who was especially devoted to her grandchildren. She really enjoyed working in her flowers and she loved butterflies. In addition to her mother, Mrs. Ramsey is survived by her husband, John Ramsey, Sr., Hampton; a son and daughter-in-law, John Ramsey Jr. and his wife Christa, Elizabethton; six grandchildren, Leighton, John Evan, Devin, Landon, Lyndie and Connor Ramsey; two sisters, Brenda Davis and her husband, Wayne, Hampton; Glenna Morton, Elizabethton; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Ray Lewis, Jr. and his wife, Maxine; Dana "Randy" and his wife, Eddie, all of Elizabethton; Rex and Angela Lewis, Johnson City; special friends, June Bailey, Diane Pierce Maxwell, Yvonne Shoun, Linda Guy, Dorothy Goodwin, Ida Hinkle, Elva Vines, Dottie Higgins and Pam Winchester. Several nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral Home, on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM and at the residence of her husband, 117 Cates Corner, Hampton or her son, 401 Allen Avenue, Elizabethton at other times. The funeral service for Mrs. Ramsey will be conducted on Wednesday, May 6, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Union Baptist Church with Pastor Pete Pollard, Rev. Bob Shupe and Rev. Doug Ranshaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of the church choir. Interment will follow in Union Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jim Greenwell, Gary Trivette, Bill Shoun, Wayne Davis, Terry Arnold, Ronnie Heaton, Jr., Mike Fritz, Matt Zimmerman and Kevin Ward. HAMPTON - John Paul, age 60, and wife, Robin Renee Sells Mathes, age 47, Hampton, Tn. passed away Friday, July 8, 2016 at Watauga Lake. They were camping when the storm came through.

Robin had lived in Georgia for several years but was a native of Bristol, Tennessee. She was a graduate of Ringgold, Georgia High School. She was associated with her husband in the operation of The Hamptons Camp Ground. Robin and John Paul loved camping, fishing, the outdoors and their family. She attended Hampton Christian Church.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Carl T. Sells, Sr. & Mayme Ruth Sells, T.G. & Vivian Gibson Hickman; her Uncles, Samuel (Sam) David Sells and Marty Hickman.

Survivors include her son & daughter-In-Law, Justin Ryan & Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia; her daughter, Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; her step-son, J.P. & Wife Leona Mathes, Johnson City; her grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; her father & step-mother, James E. "Jim" & Kim Sells, Elizabethton; her mother & step-father, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; her brother & sister-in-law, James E. John Paul was a native of Carter County. He was a graduate of Hampton High School. He served as Carter County Circuit Court Clerk for 16 years. He along with Robin operated The Hamptons Camp Ground. He attended Hampton Christian Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Gene Mathes and his grandparents, Luther & Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley and Minister & Mrs. John Mathes.

Survivors include his son & daughter-in-law, J.P. & Leona Mathes, Johnson City, his step-children, Justin Ryan & Wife Marsha Musselwhite, Acworth, Georgia and Jessica Renee Musselwhite, Nashville, Tennessee; his step-grandchildren, Ella Ruth & Jackson Ryan Musselwhite; his mother, Roma Jean Tolley Mathes, Elizabethton; sister & "brother-in-law", Debbie & Jimmy Bunton, Elizabethton; his brothers, Greg Mathes and wife Teresa and Brian Mathes and Debra Buckles all of Elizabethto; his mother-in-law, Porita Hickman Jones & husband David, Woodstock, Georgia; his father-in-law, James "Jim" Sells and wife Kim, Elizabethton; several nieces & nephews.

Joint Funeral Services for John Paul & Robin will be conducted at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hampton Elementary School Gymnasium with Mr. Dwayne Calhoun, Minister, Rev. Dave Whitesides and Rev. Adam Sells officiating. Music will be provided by Jerry White and Friends and J.P. & Leona Mathes.

Active Pallbearers for Robin will be: Jamie Sells, Daltyn Sells, Paul Clark and Adam McBride. Active Pallbearers for John Paul will be: Shane Stockton, Tony Greene, Hank Jenkins, Eddie Joe Wilson, Cody Bunton, Mike "Red" Dugger, Johnny Blankenship, Rick McClain, Mick Mathis and Phil Hileman. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Adam McBride, Brian Mathes, Greg Mathes, Jimmy Bunton, Barry Mathis, Jamie Sells, Jagger Mathes and his many friends of Carter County.

The families will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday in the Hampton Elementary School. Graveside Service for John Paul will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 15, 2016, in the Miller Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. on Friday to go to the cemetery. Robins request was to be cremated.

ELIZABETHTON - Brian Keith Mathes, age 54, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord and family and friends who have passed before him on Saturday, July 30, 2022 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was the son of the late Gene and Roma Jean Mathes. Brian was a graduate of Hampton High School and a member of Hampton Christian Church. He loved bass fishing, Nascar and bluegrass music. He was a brave and positive individual even when faced with a serious illness. Brian will be remembered as a kind hearted man and will be missed by many.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Paul Mathes and grandparents, John and Callie Mathes, Luther and Goldie Hall and Paul Tolley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Teresa Mathes; sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Jimmy Bunton; nieces and nephews, JP and Leona Mathes, Cody and Andrea Bunton, Callie, Jagger Mathes and Malia, April and Mark Fox, Kristin and Clifton Birchfield and Magnolia, Jeanna and Nathaniel Brewer and Novalee and Stetson; girlfriend, Debbie Buckles and family; special friends, Sam and Dave Timbs and family, Alainya Hare and family, Lois Carver and Virginia Grindstaff and several aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Brian will be held at 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 04, 2022 at Beck Mountain Baptist Church, 2797 Siam Rd, Elizabethton, TN 37643 with Reverend Ronnie Campbell and Mr. Dwayne Calhoun officiating. Music will be under the direction of JP and Leona Mathes. Honorary pallbearers are Houston Timbs, Sam Timbs, Dave Timbs, Kenny Timbs, Mark Timbs, Keith Rouse, Frank Childers, Cody Bunton, JP Mathes, Jagger Mathes, Mark Fox, Clifton Birchfield and Zackery Bates.
