She is survived by her husband, Rupert Earl Lipford; one daughter, Mrs. Jim Williams of Route 5, Elizabethton; one son, Glenn Lipford of Carderview; two sisters, Cecil Walsh of Elizabethton and Mrs. Will Lewis of Hampton; two brothers, Bert Walsh of Charleston, S.C., and Obbie Walsh of Elizabethton, and her father, George Walsh.

Funeral services for Mrs. Vada Pearl Lipford, 50, of Carderview, who died in Duke Hospital, Durham, North Carolina, Monday morning, will be conducted at the Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, of which she was a member, Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. M. H. Carder officiating, assisted by the Rev. C. L. Nelson. Burial will be in the Butler Memorial Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be members of the Roan Creek Masonic Lodge number 679.
Flower bearers will be members of her Sunday School class of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors are her husband, Rupert Earl Lipford; one daughter, Mrs. Jim Williams of Route 5, Elizabethton; one son, Glenn Lipford of Carderview; two sisters, Cecil Walsh of Elizabethton and Mrs. Will Lewis of Hampton; two brothers, Bert Walsh of Charleston, S.C., and Obbie Walsh of Elizabethton, and her father, George Walsh.

Vena Inez Jones, 101, of Newland, N.C., passed away on Sunday, November 21, 2021 at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.
She was born on May 30, 1920 in Avery County to the late Henry and Della McGuire. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Judd Jones; and sons, Lane, Alfred, Edward, and Harley Jones.
Vena was a member of Fall Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She loved listening to gospel music and spending time with her family.
Those left to cherish her memory are her son, Dickie Jones of Newland, NC; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren. and great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at 2 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home with the Rev. Tommy Carver and the Rev. Mike Ricker officiating.
Visitation took place from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial took place in the Fall Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Cozie Ellen Hyder, Elizabethton, peacefully went to her heavenly home on June 6, 2022 at the home of her daughter, Judy Milhorn. She was born on Beech Mountain, N.C., to Joseph and Sarah Parlier on May 13, 1923. She had nine brothers and sisters. She moved to Elizabethton and married Fred Hyder Sr. on July 21,1945.
Mrs. Hyder was a member of Doe River Baptist Church. She loved to play checkers.
She is survived by daughter, Judy Milhorn and husband Byron; sons, Fred Hyder Jr. and wife Sandra and Joe Hyder and wife Judy; sister, Lou Martinelli; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held for Mrs. Hyder at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Greg Largent officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Mrs. Florence Parlier Cook, 89, of Winston-Salem, passed away peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2019, at her home in Winston-Salem.

She was born Nov. 7, 1929, in beautiful Beech Mountain, NC. She was preceded in death by her Parents: Joseph and Sarah Parlier; six Brothers: Cluster, Finley, Spurgeon, Elliott, Sanford and twin Lawrence, and a Sister: Irene. Mrs. Cook was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church and loved her family. She and Bill raised their children in church teaching them to trust Jesus for all things. Everyone was blessed by knowing her. Through the years, she became Mom to many that had lost their mother. She will be missed. The family wants to thank Dr. Stephen Hux and his staff at Arcadia Family Practice for 30 years of attentive and genuine care.


Surviving are her Husband of 70 years: Bill Cook; her Children: Larry Cook (Wanda), Kathy Chapman (Donnie), Connie Miller (Gordon), Karen Lanier (Phil) and Pam McDowell; her Grandchildren: Barry, Dawn, Teressa, Matthew, Wendy, Nick, Brad, Amy, Sarah and Grace; 14 Great grandchildren; two Sisters: Cozie and Lue. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service was held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 27, 2019, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel, with Pastor Mark Reed and Gordon Miller officiating. The family received friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. A private family graveside service was held at Parklawn Memorial Park.

BUTLER - Larry Joe Walsh, 73, Butler, passed away unexpectedly Monday, May 27, 2019 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Born February 27, 1946 in Butler to the late Roddie V. & Alice Green Walsh. He had lived his entire life in Carter County. He was a 1964 graduate of Hampton High School and graduate from East Tennessee State College with a degree in Psychology. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era. Larry was retired as a Social Worker with Children's Service after 37 years of service. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters: Gladys Evans, Eula Mae Main and Anna Ruth Campbell and two brothers: James Riley Walsh and Earl Dayton Walsh.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years: Joyce Vines Walsh. His Children: Wendy Tester & husband Jimmy Tester II, Elizabethton, Jamie Walsh, Chattanooga, and Sherry Walsh, Elizabethton. His Grandchildren: Riley Tester, Makayla Walsh Anderson and Greyson Walsh. Two Brothers: Roddie Walsh, Jr., of California and Bill Walsh, Butler. Several nieces & nephews. His Mother-In-Law Selma Vines, Fish Springs. His four legged baby Zoey.

It was his wish to be cremated and no services are planned.

Glenn Richard "Spook" Walsh, 74, of Elk Park, N.C., the Old Beech Mountain Community, passed away on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness.
He was born on April 19, 1944 in Avery County, N.C., a son of the late Judd Walsh and the late Flora Cook Walsh.
Spook graduated from Cranberry High School and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He retired from Wyncom Communication in Lexington, N.C. He enjoyed restoring old cars and woodworking. He was a quiet gentle man.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Lester, Amos and Bert Walsh.
Glenn leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, Brenda McKinney Walsh of Elk Park, N.C.; sisters, Mary Ellen Peters of Elizabethton, Tenn., and Kate Braswell of Baltimore, Md.; and brothers, J.D. "Jake" (Rose) Walsh of Elizabethton, Tenn., Royce (Ellen) Walsh of Pickens, S.C., and Phil (Jane) Walsh of Kingston, Tenn. Spook also leaves behind his beloved Scottish Terrier, Laddie.
Services for Glenn Richard "Spook" Walsh will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, October 18, at the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral home with the Rev. Dennis Church officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Family, friends and pallbearers are asked to meet at the Beech Mountain Cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Friday for the graveside services. Rev. B.F. HAMPTON - Ray Luther Walsh, 93, Hampton, passed away Thursday, February 25, 2021 at his residence. A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Riley L. & Madgie Stout Walsh. Ray was a 1945 graduate of the Watauga Academy, Butler. He served in the United States Army during World War II and the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired Millwright and Mechanic. He was a member of Harmony Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four sisters: Selma Marlow, Christine Stout, Lois, and Barbara Woodin and four brothers: Lee Walsh, Riley Walsh, Berl Walsh, and Alvin Walsh.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Margie Arnett Walsh. A Daughter & Son-In-Law: Patricia (Steve) Maddux. A Grandson: Jeremy Edwards. Two Sisters: JoAnne Shoemaker of Florida and Shirley (Jim) Massey of Arizona Two Brothers: Bert (Ruth) Walsh of Florida and Earl (Julie) Walsh of Butler. Several nieces & nephews.

He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was retired after several years as a Maintenance Supervisor at Alcan Aluminum. Bert loved to hunt and was an avid reader. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Three Sisters: Lois Provin, Christine Stout and Selma Marlow and five Brothers: Berl, Alvin, Ray, Riley and Lee Walsh.

Ruth Lipford Williams, age 88, Butler, went home to be with her Lord Sunday, March 31, 2013, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late Earl and Pearl Walsh Lipford. Ruth was a graduate of Watauga Academy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James R. Williams, who died April 27, 1987; by a brother and sister-in-law: Buster and Margaret Peters Lipford.

She has one daughter, Sue Carol Ward and son-in-law, Darrell Ward; and one grandchild, Jamie Darrell and wife, Heather Leigh Ward; One great grandchild, Haleigh Jean Ward; Two nieces, Sherry Lynn and husband, Russell Kyte, and their son, David Kyte, his daughter, Taylor; Glenda Pearl and husband, Wayne Treadway, and their son, William Glenn.

She was a member of Cobbs Creek Baptist Church, an active member until this past year, working in the WMU, Choir Members, Sunday School Teacher, working in Bible School and always making chicken and dumplings for our meetings. She also sent many cards to the sick.

She was the Best Mom a person could have, and we are so proud of her. She would always say "Let's pray about it."

Wendell was born and raised in Beech Mountain Missionary Baptist Church in Beech Mountain, NC but of late he was a member of Meadowview Baptist Church in Mountain City, TN. He was a member of the Southern Country band for 5 years. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry work, playing the guitar, spending time with his grandchildren and his family. He enjoyed listening to Country and Gospel music.

Jerry Gale McGuire, age 72, of Elk Park passed away on August 23, 2016.

A native of Avery County, NC, he was born December 21, 1943 a son of the late Clinton Hurst and Addie Mae McGuire.

He was a longtime member of Beech Mountain Baptist Church where he sung in the choir in his youth.

Jerry worked as an Substance Abuse Counselor with New River Mental Health and also at the University Hospital in Augusta, GA.

He enjoyed computers, geneology and watching westerns on TV.

Along with his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by his: brother, Gene Allen McGuire; son-in-law, Christopher Thomas Burke.

Jerry has left to cherish his memory his: wife, Marilyn O. He is survived by his son, Bruce Parlier of the home; sisters, Jane Lynch of Pensicola, FL., Georgia Gilliam, Banner Elk, NC., Alma Shell, Nashville, TN; grandsons, Clinton Parlier, Richard James Parlier; several nieces and nephews.

Sammy married Judy Eveline Church about 1965. Judy (daughter of Norman Ray Church and Louise A. ELIZABETHTON - Sherry Lynn Lipford Kyte, age 71, of Elizabethton, TN passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at her residence.

She was born to Glenn (Buster) Lipford and Margaret Peters Lipford Edens on July 17, 1947, in Johnson County, TN, but lived most of her life in Carter County. She was proceeded in death by her parents, grandparents, Earl and Pearl Lipford of Butler, and Elijah and Ellen Eggers Peters of Elizabethton and two aunts, Ruth Lipford Williams and Mildred Peters Hart.

Sherry was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, Class of 1965. She worked at Sears for eight and one-half years and retired from Elizabethton Federal Savings Bank after thirty-nine and one-half years.

She is survived by her loving husband of fifty-three years, James Russell Kyte; a devoted son, David Glen Kyte, Elizabethton, TN; her favorite granddaughter, Taylor Jules Kyte, Charlotte, NC; one sister, Glenda (Wayne) Treadway, Dandridge, TN; one nephew, William Glenn Treadway, Murray, KY; cousin/sister, Sue Carol (Darrell) Ward, Butler, TN and many cousins.

Sherry was also blessed with a large family of Kyte-in-laws, whom she loved dearly; special friends, Sherry Maines and Ginny McGee; her Sims Hill Christian Church family; members of The Followers Sunday School Class and special Elizabethton Federal Bank family.

Special caregivers to Sherry were Teresa Phipps, Linda Henry, Shoddie Kyte, Sherry Maines, Ginny McGee, Debbie Reeser, Sue Carol Ward and Glenda Treadway.

Sherry was an active member of Sims Hill Christian Church where she served on several committees including the Youth Committee. She taught children to love Jesus for over fifty years. Being a witness for Jesus was her passion and her faith in Jesus never wavered. She was a strength to all and set an awesome example to her family and friends on how to live for Jesus and love others on a daily basis.

A service to honor the life of Sherry Lynn Lipford Kyte will be conducted at 7:00 P.M. Thursday, September 6, 2018 in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Mr. Bret Jones, minister officiating. Music will be under the direction of Lisa Carter. The family will receive friends at the funeral from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service.

Graveside service and interment will be conducted at 10:00 A.M. Friday, September 7, 2018 in the Butler Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jamie Ward, William Treadway, Mark Henry, Jason Kyte, Brian Kyte, Jake Johnson, Ricky Kyte and David Kyte. Honorary pallbearers will be Jay Kyte, Don Kyte, Charles Phipps, Dennis Kyte, Mack Henry, Steve Kyte, Wayne Treadway and Darrell Ward.

Bruce Wayne Parlier, age 47, of Banner Elk, North Carolina passed away on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk in Banner Elk, NC.

He was born on June 20, 1972, in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Sammy James Parlier and the late Judy Church Parlier.

He was preceded in death by his Parents.

Bruce attended Crossnore First Baptist Church. He enjoyed working on computers and rebuilding them. He loved music and could play any instrument with strings. He also enjoyed singing and listening to 80s Rock and Roll Music.

Bruce leaves behind to cherish his memory his Son: Ricky (Jessica) Parlier of Asheville, NC; Son: Clinton Parlier of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Special Friend: Judy Dancy of Newland, NC; several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

A Memorial Service for Bruce Wayne Parlier will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday Feb. 9, 2020, at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends beginning at 1 p.m. up until the service hour at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Inurnment will follow in Beech Mountain Cemetery on Dark Ridge Rd.
