Bernice Hobson Cooke, age 80, of Hwy 261, Bakersville, NC passed away August 11, 2013 at Rose Hill Retirement Community in Marion, NC.
She was a native of Mitchell County, NC and a daughter of the late Fonzer and Nettie Ledford Hobson. She was Co-Owner of Cooke Lumber Company, and a member of Fork Mountain Missionary Baptist Church.
Survivors include; one daughter, Deborah Cooke Greene, one grandson, Brian Greene and wife Amanda, and one great granddaughter, Peyton Greene, all of Bakersville, NC, two sisters; Laura Cooke and Marie McKinney, and one brother, Howard Hobson, all of Bakersville, NC.
She was preceded in death by: her husband, Parnell Cooke, her sisters, Nellie and Mae Hobson, Dora Greene, Pearl Hoilman, Blanche Cain, and Belle Buchanan, her brothers, Frank and Wiley Hobson.
The family will receive friends Monday, August 12, 2013 from 6:00PM until 8:00PM in Henline – Hughes Funeral Home. Interment will be at Fork Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.

Reatha Dugger Winters Jones, 91, formerly of 911 S. Second Street, Elizabethton, died Monday, April 25, 2005, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, following an extended illness. Jones was a native of Avery County, N.C., and a daughter of the late Henry and Jane Hobson Dugger. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Clyde Winters; her second husband, Carl Jones; a daughter, Judy Winters Nidiffer; a son, Fred E. Winters; a grandson, Gerry Winters; a sister and three brothers.
Mrs. Jones was of the Baptist faith. She had worked as a hospital aide in Cleveland, Ohio.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Goldie and Millard Jones, Roan Mountain, Elizabeth and W. Lock Davis, Nebo, N.C., Dimple and Larry Varney, Frankfort, Ky., and Edith and Glenwood Arrington, Martinsville, Va.; two sons and a daughter-in- law, Ralph and Betty Winters, Roan Mountain, and Arthur "Jr." Winters, Roan Highlands Nursing Center; 20 grandchildren; 39 great- grandchildren; 17 great- great-grandchildren, and a special niece, Judith Lyons, Gaithersburg, Md. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Jones will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, at Tetrick Funeral Home, Rhododendron Chapel, Roan Mountain, with Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, the Rev. Dan Cole, grandson, and the Rev. Chris Hay- wood, grandson, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mrs. Jones' granddaughters and Gloria Holly. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 until 2 p.m. Friday, prior to the service. Friends may call at other times at the residence of a daughter and son-in- law, Goldie and Millard Jones, 107 Orr Street, Roan Mountain. Interment will follow the service at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters, Dr. and Mrs. Jerry Gastineau, and the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center. He served 20 years in the U.S. Army, from 1948-1968. His tours included Korea and Vietnam. He also served in Germany. After retirement from the Army, he returned to Johnson City and worked in radio and TV repairs.

JONESBOROUGH - Frank Hopson, of Jonesborough, TN, age 93, went to be with the Lord on February 13, 2021.

He was born in Shell Creek to George W. Hopson and Rosa Sheppard Hopson. Frank lived in Washington County, TN for most of his life.

Frank was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Johnson City, TN.

Frank was a grocer for more than 40 years, and he retired from Coca Cola in 1992. He delighted in gardening, being in his yard, bird watching, and spending time with his family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Mary; three children, Billie Ruth Hopson, Jerrie Staten, and Bobby Hopson; and daughter-in-law, Kathy Hopson.

Frank is survived by his sons, Lester “Gene” Hopson and Jimmy (Teresa) Hopson; son-in-law, David Staten; daughter-in-law, Connie Sluss; step-daughter, Barbara (Ed) Mead; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank’s family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at Morris-Baker Funeral Home. There will be a funeral immediately following the visitation, at 7:00 pm, under the direction of Rev. Charlie Scalf. Maxine Imler Swanner of Telford, TN passed away Monday, July 1, 2019 at the age of 91 in the presence of family & friends. Born May 20, 1928 in Unicoi County, she was the daughter of the late D.E. Imler and Lincoln & Minnie Tilson.

In addition to being a Wife, Mother, Grannie and friend to many, Maxine worked many years in the sewing industry at Levi Strauss, Greeneville Manufacturing, Woods Manufacturing & later retiring from Baxter Pharmaceuticals. She attended & was a member of Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School classes for several years. After retirement she remained active with local churches, the Jonesborough Senior Center, visiting patients in local nursing homes as well as visiting family & friends.

In addition to her parents, Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Cad J. Swanner; son, Farrell Swanner; grandson, Jamie Swanner; stepgrandsons Ricky & John Cable; Sister & Brother - Kathleen Pierson & Jack Imler.

Left to treasure lifetime memories of Maxine include three sons & four daughters-in-law: James & Cindy Swanner, Darrell & Shelby Swanner, Glen & Janis Swanner and Brenda Swanner; stepdaughter Elnora Cable. BLACKSBURG, VA - Jewell Christine Martin passed from this Earth into the arms of Jesus on October 1, 2019.


Jewell was called by many names - Billie, Mom, Mamaw, Mrs. Martin - and she was loved by many people. She was born on May 18, 1930 in Washington County, TN. She married John M. Martin on August 7, 1950 and together they raised three children, Patricia, Kathy, and Tim.

Jewell loved Jesus, her family, her neighbors, and her long-time church, Boones Creek Baptist Church. She was always generous to those in need and prayed daily for others.

John, a member of the US Air Force, Jewell, and their children lived in many places, including Washington, Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina as well as Japan. The family settled back in East Tennessee in 1968 and lived there until 2017 when Jewell moved to Blacksburg, VA to be near family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John, on January 29, 2014.

Rev. Evin Hopson, 90, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, June 1, 2016, from his residence. A native of Avery County, N.C., he was a son of the late Linney and Della Grindstaff Hopson.
Mr. Hopson was a minister and a member of Zion Baptist Church. He had been a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church most of his life.
Mr. Hopson enjoyed fishing, hunting, cooking, preaching the gospel and spending time with his great-great-granddaughter, Adlynn.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Hildred McKinney Hopson; a daughter, Elayna Townsend; and several sisters and brothers.

JOHNSON CITY - Joan Hobson Ayers, age 81, Johnson City, went to her heavenly home on Monday, October 25, 2021, while she was surrounded by her loving family. She is a daughter of the late John and Helen Burleson Hobson. Joan was a native of Bakersville, NC and lived in various states while her husband served in the military. She moved to Johnson City in 1966.
Joan was a devoted Christian. One of her favorite bible verses was Psalm 39:1. Joan had written in her bible a verse from Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace, Saint Francis Prayer: Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console; to be understood as to understand; to be loved as to love; For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Joan was a dedicated homemaker whose life revolved around taking care of her family. She was an extremely loving wife, mother and grandmother. Joan was very interested in fashion and enjoyed modeling locally in Elizabethton. She was a fashion consultant for many years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, H. Wayne Ayers and one brother, Charles Donald Hobson.
She leaves behind to cherish her memory, two sons: Steve Ayers (Sherry) and John Ayers (Paula), all of Johnson City; five grandchildren: Austin Ayers, Eli Ayers, Johnathon Ayers, Jonathon Hubbard and Matthew Hubbard; one sister, Camille O’Neill (Tim); sister-in-law, Jean Hobson, all of Johnson City.

JOHNSON CITY - Floyd J. Hopson, age 92, of Johnson City, passed away at The Waters of Johnson City on August 12, 2018 after a short illness.

Floyd was born March 27, 1926, in Buladean, North Carolina, to Carrick and Hettie Francis Hopson. He moved to Unicoi, Tennessee, with his parents until they agreed to sign the paperwork for him to join the US Navy prior to his eighteenth birthday.

He served in the US Navy from 1943 until 1946. The majority of his service time was spent in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, serving on the USS Howard (DMS-7), a Destroyer that had been converted to a mine sweeper. While serving on the USS Howard, he participated in the battles of Saipan, The Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Luzon, and Iwo Jima.

After his discharge from the Navy in 1946, Floyd returned to Johnson City and began a twenty-two year long career with Empire Furniture Corporation; first working as the lumber inspector, and later as Assistant Superintendent. He also worked as a building contractor and land developer in the Johnson City area, where he built quality homes for over fifty years.

In addition to his parents, Floyd is preceded in death by his wife, Betty Ann Hopson; Son, Charles Hopson; and three brothers, Lloyd, Earl, and Arthur Hopson.

Survivors include: his son, Floyd J. Hopson Jr. (Sara) of Brentwood; daughter, Sharon M. McQueen of Johnson City; grandsons, James Hopson (Jamie) of Brentwood, Richard R. Mrs. Matherly was a native of Carter County and a daughter of the late William M. and Stella Shell McKinney. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Sam Matherly, February 10, 1997, and by two brothers and four sisters.

Mrs. Matherly operated the Tastee-Freez and Maxine's Sycamore Drive-In for a number of years until her retirement. She was of the Baptist Faith.

Survivors include one other daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Maynard Campbell, Elizabethton; a son and daughter-in-law, Sammy and Sally Matherly, Elizabethton; five sisters, Lilly Lyons, Hampton, Missouri Brown, Creola Stanley, Agnes Walker and Willie Jean Baughman, all of Elizabethton; and six grandchildren, April Matherly, Raymond Williams and his wife, Rebecca, Brian Williams, Carter Campbell, Tina Reece and her husband, Tim, and Josh Campbell. Clarence E. "Mac" McKinney, 89, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019, at Johnson City Medical Center. Clarence was born in Roan Mountain, Tenn., to the late Garfield and Georgia Freeman McKinney. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elsie Harrison McKinney; a son, Ronnie Dean Crowe; and a brother, Jeff McKinney.
Clarence retired from the General Motors Company and was a United States Army veteran, having served in the Korean Conflict. He was an active member of the Carter County Hunting and Fishing Association and loved to make hammer dulcimers and mountain dulcimers. In fact, in his lifetime he had made thousands of dulcimers.
Those left to cherish his memory include his son, Keith McKinney and wife Barbara of Omaha, Neb.; a grandchild, Roan McKinney of Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Dale McKinney and Ralph McKinney, both of Roan Mountain, Tenn.; and two sisters, Jessie Shell of Overland Park, Kan., and Sue Thompson of Johnson City, Tenn. JOHNSON CITY - James David Osborne, 65, of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, December 10, 2022. David was born in Johnson City, Tennessee, a son of the late Paul Osborne and Mary Collins Osborne. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Wayne Osborne.

David had lived his whole life in Johnson City and attended Science Hill High School and graduated from Happy Valley High School. He worked as a stagehand for local venues in Tennessee and North Carolina before his retirement. He enjoyed watching the Vols, Titans, and Minnesota Vikings football. He also enjoyed camping, fishing, and being outdoors. He was of the Baptist faith and was one who really loved Christmas time. He was a kind and sweet man and friend to all.

His is survived by his wife of 19 years, Tonette Poarch Osborne; one sister, Brenda Stout; one brother, Bill Osborne; one aunt, Polly Collins; his mother-in-law, Maxine Poarch; brother and sister-in-law, Chuck Poarch and wife Lisa; two nieces; one nephew; and several great nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. He is also survived by his fur babies Prissy his baby Chichewa, three cats Boo, Baby and Lil Bit.

Dempsey was born in Shell Creek, Tennessee to the late Ernest B. Shell and Delcie Dugger Shell. In addition to his parents, Dempsey was also preceded in death by a sister, Marie Starling; a brother-in-law, Charles W. Snodgrass; and a daughter-in-law, Donna C. Shell.

Dempsey was a loving husband and father and a United States Navy and Marine Corp Reserves veteran- having served as a radar man aboard the USS Noa DD 841. He was a real estate broker and developer for over 40 years and was the owner and operator of Shell Associates Real Estate and Development. Dempsey was instrumental in the development of Quail Hollow and West Links subdivisions. He was a member of the City Council, a life member of BPOE, the JC’s, and a member of the National and State Association of Realtors and NETAR. Dempsey had worked with the American Red Cross and enjoyed traveling, fishing and hunting in the West and in Alaska. He loved to read, loved living at Watauga Lake for the past 30 years and loved his German Shepherds, “Shane”.

Those left to cherish Dempsey’s legacy and memory include his wife of 64 years, Linda (Snodgrass) Shell; his son, Dempsey Shell Jr and partner Marti Johnson; his brother, Ladd Shell and wife Tessie and their family; his sister, Judy Lyons and her family; a special friend, Kenny Fortner; a special son, Doug Crockett and the Lohse family in Wyoming.

A service to celebrate Dempsey’s life will be held privately at a later date.

Arthur "Junior" Winters, 77, died Sunday, November 20, 2005, at Roan Highlands Nursing Center, Roan Mountain, following an extended illness.

Mr. Winters was a lifelong resident of Carter County where he was the eldest son of the late Clyde and Reatha Dugger Winters Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Winters, a sister, Judy W. Nidiffer, and a brother, Fred Winters.

Mr. Winters was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Roan Mountain and was loved by all who knew him.

Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Geraldine Winters and Joyce and J.G. Hughes, all of Roan Mountain; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Goldie and Millard Jones, Roan Mountain, Edith and Glenwood Arrington, Martinsville, Va., Dimple and Larry Varney, Frankfort, Ky., and Elizabeth and W. Lock Davis, Naho, N.C.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Betty Winters, Roan Mountain. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

The funeral service for Mr. Winters will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 23, in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Rev. Charlie McKinney and Mr. Gerald Holly, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Laura Freire, Patsy Haywood and Gloria Holly. Interment will follow in the Johnson-Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. David Kimmel, Dr. Alfred Earwood, the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center and Adventa Hospice.

ROAN MOUNTAIN - Ralph H. Winters, 86, of Roan Mountain, went home to be with the Lord, on Friday,July 14, 2017, at Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.

Mr. Winters was the son of the late Clyde Edward Winters and Reatha Dugger Winters Jones and was born in Banner Elk, NC. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred Winters and Arthur Winters and a sister, Judy Nidiffer.

Mr. Winters was a member of Evergreen Freewill Baptist Church. He loved the outdoors, farming and working in the garden.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of sixty-eight years, Betty Smith Winters, of the home; a son, Roger Dale Winters, Roan Mountain; a daughter, Kathy Diane Osborne and husband, Rick, Elizabethton; a grandson, Allen W. Osborne, Johnson City; a great-grandson, Tyler W. Colbaugh, Johnson City; four sisters, Edith Arrington, Goldie Jones, Dimple Varney and husband, Larry; and Elizabeth Davis and husband, Lock. Numerous nieces, nephews, special relatives, friends and his church family also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mr. Winters will be conducted on Sunday, July16, 2017, at 4:00 PM in the Rhododendron Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Roan Mountain, with Pastor John McCoury and Rev. John Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 2:00 – 4:00 PM Sunday prior to the service.

Interment will follow the funeral service in the Johnson-Roanview Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends.

Jack Hopson, age 84, of Unicoi, went home to be with the Lord Tuesday, June 2, 2015, at Franklin Woods Medical Center following a long illness.

He was a native of Mitchell County, North Carolina and lived with his loving wife of 60 years, Bertie Waldrop Hopson, on Marbleton Road in Unicoi.

He was a son of the late Jake and Ader Peterson Hopson.

Jack loved his family greatly, and truly enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jack liked helping people and did so often, enjoyed gospel music, and would sometimes be caught singing. He was an honest hardworking man and loved by his family greatly.

Jack came to peace in the last days with his illness and with the Lord. Jack will be missed very much by all who had the privilege to know him.

Mr. Hopson was a carpenter with Powell Construction and attended Green Pine Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by brothers, Floyd Hopson, JH Hopson, Smith Hopson and a sister, Ruth Morton.

JOHNSON CITY - Mrs. Fannie Higgins, 87, Johnson City, died Friday, May 21, 2021, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Fannie was a native of Mitchell County, North Carolina. She was a daughter of the late Jacob and Ader Peterson Hopson.

Fannie was a devoted minister’s wife and raised five wonderful children. She loved gardening, canning, and sharing her bounty. Fannie was a member of Harvest Time Baptist Church. She was a strong, Christian woman who loved the Lord.

In addition to her parents Fannie was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. George Higgins, two sisters and four brothers.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Brenda Propst and husband Bill of Jonesborough, Wendi McCracken and husband Mike of Marietta, GA; sons, Garry Higgins and wife Debi of Gray, Dennis Higgins of Johnson City, Tim Higgins of Johnson City; several loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her beloved four-legged companion, Bear.

A private graveside service for Fannie will be held in Mountain Home National Cemetery where she will be laid to rest with her husband.

JONESBOROUGH - Rev. Harley Howard Hopson, age 89, Jonesborough, passed away Friday, December 1, 2016 at Johnson City Medical Center.

Rev. Hopson was born in Mitchell County, NC and son of the late Clifford & Nora Deyton Hopson. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Tessie Hopson, three brothers, Howard Hopson, Herbert Hopson and Norman Hopson and one sister, Irene Ingle Roberts.

He was a member of Unity Family Worship Center. He started several churches including Mountain City Church of God and Jonesborough Church of God.

Rev. Hopson was a United States Navy Veteran.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Randy & Kathy Hopson; two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie & Steve Morris and Karen & Richard Ralston; grandchildren, Angela Davidson, Garrett Morris, Dustin Morris (Brittney) and Jessica Peregoy; great-grandchildren, Harley Lenea Davidson, Dylan Davidson, Blaine Peregoy, Areli Morris and Willow Morris; brothers and sisters, Frances Hensley, Charlene Hensley, Shirley Peterson, Nora Rickman, Sharon Pendley, Carl Hopson and Clifton Hopson.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, December 5, 2016 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Rev. Randy Hopson and Rev. Dustin Morris officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service and other times at 4192 Old Stage Coach Rd. Telford, TN.

Interment services will be conducted 11:00 am Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at Cherry Grove-Keplinger Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Steve Morris, Richard Ralston, Garrett Morris, Bill Head, Frank Tibbs and Daniel Ramsey.

Herbert Hopson, age 84, of Green Mountain, went home to be with Lord on Sunday, September 8th, 2013 at St. Josephs Hospital. He was a son of the late Clifford and Nora Deaton Hopson. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Diane Hopson and a brother, Howard Hopson. Herbert was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was a people person and loved the Lord. He worked at Carolina Tire for a number of years where he repaired TV's and electronics and enjoyed farming, hunting and singing.

Surviving is his loving wife of 47 years, Linda Sue McCurry Hopson; sons: Kevin Hopson and wife, Michele, of Mars Hill and Gary Hopson of Green Mountain; daughter, Susie Shelton and husband, Jackie, of Mars Hill; brothers: Harley Hopson of TN, Norman Hopson of Burnsville, Carl Hopson and Clifton Hopson both of AL; sisters: Irene Roberts of TN, Charlene Hensley of Burnsville, Francis Whitson of Green Mountain and Shirley Peterson of Burnsville; grandchildren: Justus Shelton, Jesse Shelton, Sidney Alexander, Sarah Beth Alexander and Annabelle Grace Hopson all of Mars Hill; nieces: Nora Rickman of VA and Sharon Pendley of Burnsville. Numerous other nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, August 10th in the Chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. The Rev. Marvin Hensley, Rev. Dean Murphy and Rev. Junior Peterson will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday in the Peterson Hill Cemetery.

Irene Hopson Engle Roberts, age 80, 111 Bradshaw Woods Drive, Erwin, went home to be with the Lord, Tuesday evening, December 10, 2013, at her home. A longtime resident of Unicoi County, she was born in Green Mountain, North Carolina, a daughter of the late Clifford and Noro Deaton Hopson. Mrs. Roberts retired, after 28 years of dedicated service, as a seamstress with Industrial Garment. She was a devoted member of Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Dorcus Sunday School Class.
She took pride in her home and family and loved to read her entire life.
Other than her parents, Mrs. Roberts was preceded in death by her husband of forty-six years, Orvil Engle; an infant daughter, Brenda Sue Engle; two brothers: Howard Hopson and Herbert Hopson.

Survivors include her husband of seventeen years, Jay Will Roberts; three daughters: Linda Engle Fore and husband, Robert L., Johnson City, Patsy Engle Gilbert and husband, Glenn, Erwin, Joyce Engle Davis and husband, David, Johnson City; two step-sons: William Larry Roberts and wife, Helen, North Ridgeville, Ohio and Gary Wayne Roberts, Johnson City; six grandchildren: Tracy Fore Bishop and husband, David, Jonesborough, Sara Gilbert Schwenke and husband, Gary, Erwin, Carl Glenn Gilbert and wife, Anna, Elizabethton, Mark William Gilbert, Erwin, Matthew Allen Davis and Rachel Davis, both of Johnson City; six great grandchildren: Dylan Dean Bishop, Robert David Bishop, Chase Alexander Gilbert, Ava Katherine Gilbert, Dakota Wesley Schwenke and Blake Liam Schwenke; four brothers: Harley Hopson, Jonesborough, Norman Hopson and wife, Nadine, Burnsville, Carl Hopson, Phenix City, Alabama and Clifton Hopson, Ocala, Alabama; three sisters: Charlene Hensley and husband, Fred, Burnsville, Francis Whitson, Shirley Peterson and husband, Ronnie, all of Green Mountain.

Norman Hopson, age 77, of Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 9th, 2015 at Mission's Memorial Campus. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Clifford and Nora Deaton Hopson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Irene Engle and brothers: Howard Hopson and Herbert Hopson. Norman attended Little Creek Holiness Church, where he loved the Lord and singing and listening to gospel music. He retired from Glen Raven Mills and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone. He loved to use his hands and work on small engines. He also loved to fish and tie his own flies.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 58 years, Nadine Lewis Hopson; daughters: Sandra Gregory and husband, Ronnie, of Burnsville, Donna Harrison and husband, Mark, also of Burnsville and Norma Hopson of the home; son, Forrest Hopson also of the home; brothers: Harley Hopson of TN, Carl Hopson of AL, Clifton Hopson of AL; sisters: Charlene Hensley of Burnsville, Francis Whitson of Green Mountain and Shirley Peterson of Burnsville; grandchildren: Brandon and Jeremy Gregory, David Bailey and wife, Kendra, and Emily Harrison all of Burnsville; special friend, Ted Cannon. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral Services will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 12th in the chapel of Yancey Funeral Services. Brothers Dayton Lewis and Lou Franklin will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the services at the funeral home and at other times will be at the home. Private burial will follow the services in the Arvil Lewis Cemetery on Little Creek.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Floyd and Nora Elliott Miller. Mrs. Tolley was a homemaker and a longtime member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Tolley, in 1994; a son-in-law, Parrot Nave; her sisters, Madge Chambers, Nellie Julian, Florence Julian, Pauline Julian, Belle Morgan and Georgia Ingram; and her brothers, Willie, Billie Joe and Tom Miller. Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, Gladys Potter, finished her earthly race from her home on Buck Mountain where she had lived for more than 101 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, William H. and Emma Potter Elliott; her beloved husband, Crawford Potter; her most beloved son, Fred A. Potter; two sisters, Maggie Bowers and Goldie McKinney; and one brother, Henry Elliott.
Gladys was a member of the Elizabethton Church of Christ.
Gladys leaves behind her son, Albert (Norma) Potter, who treated her with more love and respect than any blood daughter could have; a daughter, Bell Bennett; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday, January 5, in the Elliott Family Cemetery. The family would like to express a special “Thank You” to the staff of Amedisys Hospice. Special thanks to Billie Allen, who has helped dad and mom for years. So much appreciated are Kacey Lyons, Emma Holtsclaw and Diana Potter, who made it possible for mom to stay home.

Born July 18, 1924 to the late William and Lula Potter Elliott, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 38 years, Charles Milton McKinney Sr., a sister, Maggie Elliott Bowers; a brother, Henry Elliott, two sons-in-law, George Birmingham and Lester Leon Hicks; and three grandsons, Kevin Birmingham, Bobby Jack Brown and Brian Stacy McKinney.
Goldie worked for several years at the Crossnore Hospital and also Cannon Memorial Hospital. Goldie loved the Lord and her church family. She was a member of Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ. She loved to read her Bible, loved to fish and loved to crochet.
Leaving to cherish her memory are her daughters, Carol Ann Birmingham, Baltimore, Md., Juanita and Jack Brown, Woodbridge, Va., and Doris Hicks, Elk Park, N.C.; a son, Rev. Charles and Brenda McKinney, Roan Mountain; her grandsons, Mark Birmingham, Jeffery Hicks and Aaron McKinney; and her great-grandchildren, Ian Brown, Logan Hicks, Elijah, Connor, Kiera and Brooklyn McKinney. Goldie leaves many nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors (Jackie and Patsy Blackwell, who always kept a watchful eye to make sure she was OK), whom she loved and cherished. Her memory will live on in those who knew her.
Funeral services for Goldie McKinney will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, November 29, at Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ, 307 Main Street, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Charles McKinney, the Rev. Chris McCoury and the Rev. Adrian Morales officiating. The graveside service and interment will be at 10 a.m. Monday, November 30, in the Elk Park Cemetery. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday, will be Aaron McKinney, Jeff Hicks, Logan Hicks, Adrian Morales, Scott Potter and Casey Hartley. Honorary pallbearers will be Jackie Blackwell, Sam McKinney, Walter McKinney, Conley Shell and Kenny Jones. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of Roan Highlands Nursing Center and the staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Roan Mountain Church of Jesus Christ. Friends may also visit with the family at her residence. ROAN MOUNTAIN - Mrs. Betty Joean Norris, 83, of the Shell Creek Community of Roan Mountain, went home to be with her Lord, on Saturday, January 21, 2017, at The Waters at Roan Highland Nursing Center following an extended illness. She was a daughter of the late James Bert and Nellie Briggs Elliott and was born in Carter County. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Ernie Norris; two brothers, Darwin Elliott, J.B. Elliott and a sister, Jessie Harrison.

Mrs. Norris had worked at Cannon Memorial Hospital as a ward clerk, and also had cared for children as a home day care provider. She was a member of High Point Baptist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband of sixty-eight years, Beryl Norris, of the home; a son, Harvey Norris and his wife, Brenda, Elizabethton; a daughter, Pat Shell and her husband, Wayne, Roan Mountain; two granddaughters, Beth McLaughlin and her husband, Troy; Aleshia Cuthbertson, all of Roan Mountain; two grandsons, Jason Norris and his wife, Jennifer, Knoxville; Lee Norris and his wife, Jennifer, Rumford, Maine; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Therman Elliott; Bill Elliott; two sisters, Ruth Oaks, and Judy McKinney. Several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

A service to honor the life of Mrs. Norris will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 23, 2017, at the Tetrick Funeral Home, Riverside Chapel, with Rev. Tull Oaks, Jr., officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from Noon – 2:00 PM on Monday prior to the service and at the home at other times.

Interment will follow the funeral service on Monday at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Ledford and Danny Miller.

ELIZABETHTON - Eula Mae Hodge, age 91, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with her Lord on Friday, February 26, 2021 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was born to the late James Monroe “Poga” Potter and Sarah Catherine Hopson. Mae was the Administrative Assistant for Laws-Troutman Insurance Company where she later retired. She was active with a group of ladies that would go to the Carter County Jail weekly and have devotions with the female inmates. Mae loved to sew, cook, and take care of others. She was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lestol M. “Sid” Hodge and brother, James M. “Bud” Potter. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Teresa Densford and husband Orris, of Elizabethton; two sisters, Dorothy “Dot” Oaks and Leota Holsclaw, both of Elizabethton; a granddaughter, Anna Marie Densford, of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews also survive.

A graveside service to honor the life of Eula Mae Hodge will be conducted at 1:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 2, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Michael Klaus and Mr. Brock Harrison, Ministers officiating. Active pallbearers are Randy Brockley, Isaac Carson, Adam Greenlee, Michael Greenlee, Noah Holsclaw, Chris Mosely, Efren Rosario, David Shields and David Trivette. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of First Christian Church, Elizabethton.

ELIZABETHTON - Leota Holsclaw, age 83, of Elizabethton, TN went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 1, 2021 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late, James “Poga” Monroe Potter and Sarah Catherine Hopson Potter. Leota retired as a Medical Secretary for Dr. Eugene Galloway. She was a member of Elizabethton Church of Christ and Graduate of Elizabethton High School. She enjoyed going to Elizabethton ballgames, traveling, entertaining, cooking and especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and family.
In addition to her parents, Leota was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Willie Holsclaw; brother, Bud Potter; sister, Eula Mae Hodge and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in law. Those left to cherish her memory include her two sons, Eddie Holsclaw and wife Amber and Jeff Holsclaw and wife Vanessa, all of Elizabethton; three granddaughters, Jessica Trivette and husband David, Summer Mosley and husband Christopher, Katie Rosario and husband Danny; two grandsons, Noah Holsclaw and Josh Reifert and wife Melissa; eleven great- grandchildren, Halle, Luke, Levi, Miles, Callie, Millie, Stella, Willa Mae, Selah, Nala and Jade; sister, Dorothy “Dot” Oaks, of Elizabethton; two special nieces, Teresa Densford and husband Oris, Nancy Greenlee and husband Jim; special great-niece, Anna Marie Densford and several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service to honor the life of Leota Holsclaw will be conducted at 7:30 P.M. on Thursday, November 4, 2021 at Elizabethton Church of Christ with Mr. Roby Ellis, Minister and Mr. Eddy Craft, Minister officiating. Music will be held by Elizabethton Church of Christ Congregation. The family will receive friends from 5:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. prior to the funeral service on Thursday at the church.
The graveside service and committal will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, November 5, 2021 at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Todd Houston, minister officiating. Active pallbearers will be Christopher Mosley, David Trivette, Danny Rosario, Michael Greenlee, Adam Greenlee, Alex Jones, Ethan Cannon, Hadley Townsend, Terry Chambers. Leota married Willie Holsclaw about 1959 in Carter County, , , Tennessee. Willie (son of James Frederick Holsclaw and Susan Ann Harmon) was born on 2 Dec 1937 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 22 Dec 2020 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee. Perry Hopson, 59, of the Roaring Creek Community, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, at his home.

He was a son of Delpha Hughes Hopson of Roaring Creek and the late Rothrock Hopson. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Paulette Hughes. He loved restoring old cars, carp fishing, but mostly he loved his family.

Surviving in addition to his mother are his loving wife of 35 years, Teresa Webb Hopson; daughter, Angel Dugger and husband, Andrew, of Licklog; sons, Chad Hopson and wife, Kristen, of Roaring Creek, and John Hopson and wife, Julie, of Roaring Creek; three grandchildren, Austin and Aaron Dugger and Savannah Hopson; sisters, Brickie Pittman and husband, Joe, of Spruce Pine and Nadine Helton and husband, Jerry, of Roaring Creek. Numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday in The People's Church on Roaring Creek. The Rev. Daniel Nance, the Rev. Chris Nance and the Rev. Jody Almond officiated. Burial followed in the Hopson Family Cemetery. The family received friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

Pallbearers were Derick Hughes, Gabriel Wise, Joel Buchanan, Hansel Allen, Johnathan Hughes, Ray Howell and Shelton Brooks. Honorary Pallbearers were Aaron and Austin Dugger.
