Mrs. Margaret Stephens Manning, age 91, of Elizabethton, TN, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late William Warren (W.W.) and Celia Belle Teague Stephens. Mrs. Manning had built airplanes for the U.S. Navy and also worked at Yates Remnant Shop for twenty years. She enjoyed sewing and crafts. Mrs. Manning was a member of First Christian Church, Elizabethton, and the Fidelis Sunday School Class at First Christian Church. She worked in the Church nursery for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Cartha Chesser, Oscar Stephens, Ida Pate, William Stephens, Clara Kyte, Laura Kyte, Harold Stephens, Hazel Vanhuss, John Stephens, and an infant sister, Mary Ruth Stephens. Survivors include her husband of fifty-nine years, Paul T. Manning, of the home; a daughter, Paula Manning, Elizabethton; a grandson, Marc Gibson and wife, Rachel, Charlotte, NC; a great-grandson, Ethan Gibson, Charlotte, NC; and special friends, Teresa Norris, Lanny Norris, Whitney Norris, Sara, Laban and Rilyn Propst and Randy and Patsy Tadlock. Several nieces and nephews also survive. A Celebration of Life Service for Mrs. Margaret Stephens Manning will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 21, 2013, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral and Cremation Services with Dr. Don Marshall, minister, officiating. Music will be under the direction of Mr. Gene Estep. Arra B. Garland, 82, 1614 Orlando Drive, Johnson City, died Wednesday, July 21, 1999, at Johnson City Medical Center after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Garland was a native of Carter County and had lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a daughter of the late John and Emma Morton Hyder and was also preceded in death by her husband, Ira Garland, in 1968, five brothers and two sisters.
Mrs. Garland was a retired employee of TPI.
Survivors include four sons, Curtis Lynn Church, Palm Bay, Fla., Richard L. Church, Elizabethton, Bobby Church, Jonesborough, and Sammy Garland, Johnson City; a daughter, Linda Gourley, Jonesborough; and a brother, Clyde
Hyder, Johnson City. Twelve grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews also survive.
GARLAND -- Funeral services for Arra B. Garland, 82, 1614 Orlando Drive, Johnson City, who died Wednesday, will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Friday from the Morris-Baker South Chapel with Rev. Dale Ferrell officiating.
Interment will follow graveside services at 11 a.m. Saturday at Roselawn Memory Gardens. The family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Saturday and go in procession to the cemetery for those

ELIZABETHTON - Charles Ray Morton, age 72, of Elizabethton, Tennessee went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 at the Johnson City Medical Center. Charles was born January 5, 1950 in Elizabethton to the late Henry Morton and Irene (Cornett) Morton Nave. In addition to his parents, Charles was also preceded in death by four sisters, Marion Hulse, Louise Ingram, Monnie Willliams and Charlotte Street; and two brothers, Cecil Morton and Leonard Morton.

Charles was the most loving person, husband and was a wonderful provider for his family. He had worked in the construction business at PSG and also was a self-employed lawn service provider. He was a member of Valley Forge Free Will Baptist Church where he loved greeting people at the door. Charles enjoyed fishing, hunting and working in his yard.

Those left to cherish Charles’s memory include his wife of 25 years, Becky Morton of Elizabethton; his sons, Joe Lingerfelt, Sampson Lingerfelt and Jason (Brandi) Lingerfelt all of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Brooklyn, Joseph, Maci, Aiden and Patricia; four sisters, Iva Lee Beamer, Carolyn Lyons, Joyce Norman and Ruthie Loveless; and one brother, James Nave.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor the life of Charles Ray Morton will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, June 10, 2022 in the Lyons Cemetery (1259 Dry Creek Road, Elizabethton, TN) with Reverend Randy Johnson officiating.

ELIZABETHTON - Lois Ann Hodge Ward, 83, Elizabethton, passed away Friday, May 13, 2022 in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness. A native of Carter County she was born March 13, 1939 to the late John & Alice Morton Hodge. She was retired from the Carter County School System after 30 plus years as a cook. Lois loved Blue Grass Music. She was a member of Southside Free Will Baptist Church but attended Valley Forge Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Bill Ward and two sisters: Wilma Hampton and Carol Treadway.

Survivors include Her Sisters: Geraldean Grindstaff, Glenna Bullock and Johnnie (Raymond) Holtsclaw. Her chosen sister: Norma Jean Williams. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, 2022 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. David Siebenaler Minister officiating. Interment will follow in the Lyons Cemetery. ELIZABETHTON - Ruby Carol Hodge Treadway, 75, Elizabethton passed away Friday, June 11, 2021 in the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born April 6, 1946 to the late John & Alice Morton Hodge. Carol was a graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a retired employee of Happy Valley Credit Union. Carol attended Zion Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles “Blue” Treadway who passed away April 26, 2016 and by a sister: Wilma Hampton. Carol loved Blue Grass Music, loved being around people and spending time with her family most of all her grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughters & sons-in-law: Carrie & Johnnie Wilson and Kellee & Brandon Blevins. Four Grandchildren: Kaylee Wilson, Nathan Wilson, Eli Blevins and Clayton Blevins. Juanita Whitehead Taylor, 91, of Elizabethton, passed from this life to her eternal life on Wednesday, April 10, 2019, following a lengthy illness. Juanita was born on November 14, 1927 to the late Frank Stuart and Jennie Morton Whitehead. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Fate Whitehead, and an infant sister, Ethel.
Those left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 68 years, Walter Taylor, and daughters, Marlene (Richard) Good and Donna (Dan) Schumaier; her grandsons, John (Ketasha) Goodwin and Jordan Grindstaff; three great-grandchildren, Graham, Gracen and Gretchen Goodwin; along with several nieces and nephews.
Juanita was a member of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church. She loved being outdoors and was happiest in her garden or yard. She loved animals and had several special pets through the years. She also loved feeding the birds and watching and identifying them.
A Celebration of Juanita's life will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, April 12, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Luis O'Bourke officiating. Music will be provided by John and Ketasha Goodwin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Julius Tolley who died July 3, 1994 and by four brothers and one sister.

Mr. Whitehead was a retired store room clerk at North American Rayon Corporation. He was a member and deacon of Little Doe Free Will Baptist Church and a member of Hampton Masonic Lodge #750. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a Disabled Veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Pauline Hughes Whitehead; a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Ned Isaacs, Hampton; a son, Alvin Whitehead, of the home; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ed and Shirley Whitehead, Johnson City, and Louis and Dale Whitehead, Hampton; two sisters, Hazel Malone and Crystal Johnson, both of Hampton; a granddaughter, Beth Amy Isaacs; and three aunts, Tina Humphreys and Julie Miller, both of Elizabethton, and Arizona Hopson, Hampton. Crystal Whitehead Johnson, age 78, 197 Simerly Creek Road, Hampton, and Life Care Center of Elizabethton, died Sunday, December 7, 2003
in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital following an extended illness.
A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Henry A. and Lucy Morton Whitehead. Mrs. Johnson was a member of Little Doe Freewill Baptist Church and was a retired nurse.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James "Black" Johnson, and three brothers, Babe Whitehead, Lester Whitehead and Narvel Whitehead.
Survivors include one step-daughter and spouse, Lucy Nell and George Sells, of Johnson City; two step sons and spouses, Lynn and Jeanie

JOHNSON CITY - Ed Whitehead, 90. Johnson City, passed away Sunday, April 25, 2021 at the Hillview Health Center. He was born December 24, 1930, in Hampton to the late Henry & Lucy Morton Whitehead. He was a 1949 graduate of Hampton High School. Ed served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a retired truck driver. He formerly worked at ETWNC and Jones Truck Line. He loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of Sinking Creek Baptist Church where he was a former Deacon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers: Narvel & Louis Whitehead and two sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years: Shirley Simerly Whitehead. One Daughter & Son-In-Law: Deborah & David Shankle of Johnson City. Two Grandchildren: David E. (Victoria) Shankle and Daniel (Ashley) Shankle. Three Great Grandchildren: David R., Emma and Edmund. Several nieces & nephews.

HAMPTON - Louis Whitehead, 80, Hampton, passed away peacefully Friday, April 28, 2017 at his residence with his family by his side.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Henry A. & Lucy Morton Whitehead. Louis was a 1955 graduate of Hampton High School and attended East Tennessee State College. He served in the United States Army. He was a retired Tool & Die Maker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Navel Whitehead, Two Sisters: Crystal Johnson and Hazel Malone and two infant brothers. He was a Member and Deacon of Morgan Chapel Free Will Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Dale Roberts Whitehead. Three Children: Vickie Whitehead Jenkins, Deltona, Florida, Lisa Whitehead Blackburn and husband Dana, and Greg Whitehead and wife Celena all of Hampton. Five Grandchildren: Allison and Kayla Jenkins, Stone Hutchinson, Kelli Blackburn and Louis Seth Whitehead. One Brother: Ed Whitehead and wife Shirley, Johnson City. Several nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with his son Pastor Greg Whitehead officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2017 in the Whitehead Cemetery with Pastor Troy Davis officiating. Music will be provided by his granddaughter, Kayla Jenkins. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 9:20 a.m. Wednesday will be: Willie Morgan, Mike Hill, Malone Hill, Joe Vance, Stone Hutchinson, Zane Blevins and Danny Winters. HAMPTON - Richard "Arnold" Hughes, age 76, of Hampton went home to be with the Lord on Friday, November 2, 2018 from the Hermitage Health Center.

Arnold was born in Carter County to the late David N. Hughes, Sr. and Dealie Stephens Hughes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Flo Hughes; two brothers, Robert Lee Hughes and David Hughes, Jr.; and a sister, Sophina Ware.

Arnold was a loving husband, beloved father, grandfather, great grandfather and a lifelong friend to many. He graduated from Hampton High School, where he played basketball and was part of the 1960 basketball team that won the State Championship. Arnold retired from General Motors as an assembly worker and was a member of Sunset Freewill Baptist Church, where he served as a trustee and as an assistant Sunday school teacher of the adult class. Arnold loved fishing and was an avid fisherman. He was also very devoted to his church and his church family.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Dianne L. Morelock Hughes, of the home; three daughters, Brenda Morelock, of Elizabethton, Amy Gouge and husband Jason, of Hampton and Gina Hatfield, of Crossville, TN; a son, Rob Rhea and wife Jama, of Auburn, IN; a sister, Joan Hathaway, of Old Fort, NC; his grandchildren, Joshua Crumley, Megan Slagle and husband Bo, Gabriel Gouge, Charles Baines, Breely Taylor and husband Todd, T.J. Schroeder and wife Stephanie and Will Schroeder; his great grandchildren, Hunter Slagle, Lily Slagle, Tanner Taylor, Travis Taylor and Colbie Taylor; his brothers-in-law, Verlin Stevens, Les Stevens and Don Morelock; his sisters-in-law, Delores Honeycutt and Carolyn Singleton; three special nephews, Robert Hughes, Kelvin Hughes and Chris Hughes. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

A service to honor and celebrate the life of Richard Arnold Hughes will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Sunday, November 4, 2018 in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Terry Richardson and Rev. Gary Whitehead, officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Sunset Free Will Baptist Church Choir and Quartet. The family will receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM in the funeral home chapel, prior to the service on Sunday or at the residence at any time.

The graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 5, 2018 at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Dennis Stevens, 76, Elizabethton, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at his residence. He was born December 14, 1945 in Elizabethton to the late Henry Clay and Geneieve Campbell Stevens.
Dennis was a graduate of Hampton High School and was retired from Sprint Telephone Company. He loved to hunt. He had attended the Church of God.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ella Louise Whitehead Stevens, who passed away June 5, 2021, and a brother, Kenneth Stevens.
Survivors include four sisters, Louise Barnett, Johnson City, Geraldine Tolley of Ohio, Darlene Tolley, Hampton, and Aileen (Ronald) Street, Roan Mountain; two brothers, Roger Stevens, Hampton, and Dale Stevens, Unicoi; and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, March 7, at Roselawn Memorial Park with the Rev. R.L. Poole officiating. GRAY - Marlene B. Hyder Meeks, of Gray, Tennessee, passed away Saturday, September 3, 2016 at the Life Care Center of Gray. A native of Washington County, she was a daughter of the late William C. "Charlie" and Mary Oliver Hyder. Mrs. Hyder retired from the F.B.I in Washington, D.C following 35 years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, H.T. "Tom" Meeks, daughter, Jayne Annette; sister, Gladine Harrison; two infant brothers; and an infant niece.

Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Janette and Jim Ford; nephew Landon Harrison; and two special cousins, Norma Smith and Charlie Oliver.

The graveside service and interment will be conducted at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday, September 6, 2016 at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Rev. E.L Wheeler officiating. Music will be provided by Queenie Wheeler. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. in the Parlor of Appalachian Funeral Home.

JOHNSON CITY - Dr. Carroll R. Hyder, age 77, Johnson City, passed away Friday, April 5, 2019 at Select Specialty Hospital in Bristol.

A native of Johnson City, he was the son of the late Daughton and Stella Moody Hyder.

He was a member of Boones Creek Christian Church.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Jimmie Ann Leonard Hyder, Johnson City; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher Todd & Jennifer Hyder, Johnson City; two special grandsons, James Hyder and Patrick Hyder; one brother and sister-in-law, Norman & Barbara Hyder, Maryland; sister-in-law, Patsy Johnson and husband Richard, Johnson City; three nieces and one nephew.

He graduated from Boones Creek High School in 1959. In 1967 he received his B.S. and also his M.A. from East Tennessee State University in Industrial Technology. In 1971 he received his PH.D. from The Ohio State University in Industrial Technology and Research Statistics.

Dr. Hyder served four years in the United Sates Air Force at Barksdale Air Force Base in LA. He was a Photo Intelligence Photogrammetry and Cartographic. His unit was presented the Presidential Unit Citation. He was affiliated with scientific, professional and civic organizations: Associated General Contractors of America, East Tennessee Associated General Contractors, National Association of Home Builders, Johnson City Area Home Builders, Syndication, American Vocational Association, and Epsilon Pi Tau, International Honorary Fraternity, and Kiwanis Clubs International. He also had Professional License US Security and Exchange Commission Series 22 and US Security and Exchange Commission Series 63.

Dr. Hyder was Associate Dean and Professor at East Tennessee State University. He was Dean of the College of Applied Science and Technology at E.T.S.U. and Chairman of Department of Technology at E.T.S.U. He was Associate Professor and Coordinator of Construction Technology program, Vocational Teachers program, and graduate program. He was also at the center for Vocational and Technical Education, Research Associate with primary focus in program evaluation and Career Education and Highway Safety Projects. At E.T.S. U. he helped develop the Gray Fossil Site. He was also instrumental in Digital Media at the University.

He loved to play golf and took many trips with friends to play.

Funeral services will be conducted 7:00 pm Monday, April 8, 2019 at Dillow-Taylor Funeral Home with Mr. Michael H. Freeman officiating. The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm Monday prior to the service.

Private interment services will be conducted at Washington County Memory Gardens.

Richard Lee Church, 74, of Elizabethton, passed away Friday, April 13, 2018, at Johnson City Medical Center after an extended illness.
He was a native of Johnson City and a son of the late Arra Belle Hyder Church.
Richard was a 1961 graduate of Lamar High School. He was a retired employee of Baxter Pharmaseal after 27 years of service. His hobby was fishing. Later in life he put his faith and trust in God.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Lee Church Jr. and Billy Church, both of Johnson City, and Bobby Gene Austin, Elizabethton; one daughter, Yvonne Whitehead, Johnson City; four grandchildren, Miranda, Aaron, Tonya and Josh; one great-grandson, Hawthorne Isiah Byington; three brothers, Curtis "Lynn" Church and wife Connie of Florida, Bobby E. Church and wife Pat, Telford, and Sammy Garland, Gray; one sister, Linda Gourley and husband Doug, Jonesborough; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A service for Richard Lee Church will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, April 16, in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Dewayne Calhoun, minister, officiating. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum. Active pallbearers will be Billy Church, Richard Church Jr., Mickey Mackley, David Garland, Gene Austin, Aaron Gourley and Paul Skinto.

JONESBOROUGH - Mr. David "Dave" A. Hyder, age 69, Jonesborough, passed away on Wednesday February 15, 2017 at the Johnson City Medical Center.

Dave was born in Johnson City, TN on March 7, 1947. He was the son of Wilma Bowers Hyder and the late Dave S. Hyder. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Hyder and father-in-law, Leon Baker Sr.

Dave was a member of the 1965 class of Jonesboro High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He was a barber by profession and for many years owned Dave's Barber Shop in Johnson City. Dave enjoyed fishing and show cars. He was a member of Hales Chapel Ruritan and Jonesborough Hardees early morning club.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Brenda Baker Hyder; his mother Wilma Hyder; sisters, Judy Gray and Shelia Shell; nieces, Sherry Bowman and Judy Gail White; three great nephews, several cousins and a special cousin and friend, Bobby Church; Dave is also survived by his Baker family who loved him deeply; mother-in-law, Evelyn Baker of the home; brother-in-law, Leon Baker and wife Kathy; nephew, Eric Baker and wife Crystal; great nephew, Jonathan Baker.

Brenda wishes to extend a special thank you to Larry Hoss for always lending a helping hand when needed for many years. Also a special thank you to the physicians, nurses and staff of the 2900 I.C.U. for the care and compassion shown to Dave, herself and family during this difficult time.

Charles Frank Bowling, 72, Mercersburg Pa., died Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at his home of heart failure and complications from lung cancer. A resident of Mercersburg, Pa., for over 20 years, he was from Elizabethton, Tenn., and the son of the late Frank and Tempie Morton Bowling. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Mabel; a son, Ricky Bowling; a brother, Bobby Bowling; and two sisters, Cathy McInturff and Wanda Burchfield.
Charles was a welder by trade and worked many construction jobs. He retired from Rinker Steel in Frederick, Md.
He was the father of four children, David Bowling, Elizabethton, Tenn., Tammy Bowling Dixon, Mount Storm, W.Va., Courtney Bowling of Virginia, and a stepson, Richard Robinson of West Virginia. He had several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Terry (Cindy) Bowling, Unicoi, Tenn., Dean (Judy) Bowling, Hampton, Tenn., Phyllis (Doyle) Jarrett and Freda Bowling, both of Elizabethton, Tenn. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and a special aunt and uncle, Stanley and Jean Rice.
It was Charles’ wishes to be cremated. The family will have a special memorial service at a later date. The family would like to say a very special Thank You to all that was involved in Charles’ care, especially his neighbors, Millford “Farmer” and Tina Hornbecker.

JONESBOROUGH - Wanda Earlene Bowling Burchfield, age 67, of Jonesborough, TN a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away Friday, June 14, 2019 at her residence.

A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Bowling and Tempie Morton Bowling. She was formerly employed as a cook at Signature Health Care, Elizabethton (Pine Ridge) and she was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Burchfield loved to cook and loved spending time with her family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert T. Burchfield; a sister, Kathy McInturff and a brother, Robert Bowling. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Julie Aleman and husband Osvaldo and Robert L. Burchfield, both of Elizabethton and Leslie Burchfield and Kristy Burchfield, both of Jonesborough; fifteen grandchildren, twenty-two great-grandchildren; brothers Charles Bowling, Mercersburg, PA, Dean Bowling and wife Judy, Elizabethton and Terry Bowling and wife Cindy, Unicoi; sisters, Phyllis Jarrett and husband Dorrell and Freida Bowling, all of Elizabethton and a special aunt, Jean Rice and husband Stan, Johnson City. Several nieces, nephews, several extended family members and many dear friends also survive.
