Two Zionville people were killed and three other persons injured last night about 7:30 p.m. when two cars collided on U. S. Highway 421 about three miles east of Trade.
Mrs. Mary Sue Trivette, 36, of Zionville, and her father-in-law, Dewey C. Trivette, 69, also of Zionville, were the fatalities. North Carolina Highway Patrolman R. D. Bowlin said they were passengers in a car driven by Mrs. Trivette's husband, George C. Trivette, 38. Bowlin said the Trivette car drove onto the highway into the path of a car traveling toward Boone, N. C., driven by William Harold Walker, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Waker, Mountain City.
Mr. Trivette, Walker, and David G. Fenner, Shouns, a passenger in the Walker car, were taken to Watauga Hospital, Boone, N. C. for treatment. Walker and Fenner were released.
Bowlin said no charges had been filed although an investigation is continuing.

Ruth Trivett - EAST RIDGE
EAST RIDGE — Mrs. Ruth Trivett, 94, of East Ridge, departed this life to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 13, 2006.

She was a long time member of Piney Flats Presbyterian Church in Piney Flats, Tennessee, where she played the piano for over 30 years. She attended McFarland United Methodist Church, Rossville, Georgia, for the last 12 years. She loved music, the outdoors, watching sporting events and being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William Earl Trivett Sr.; and her parents, Arthur and Vesta Shell; and a brother, Thurman Shell.

Survivors include her children, Joyce (Roy) Brookshire, Chattanooga, Bill (Ann) Trivett, Nashville; grandchildren, Debbie (Kenny) Parsons, Mike (Temple) Brookshire, and Danny (Rhonda) Brookshire, all of Chattanooga, Shelley (Clay) Dye, Wilmington, NC, Paige Trivett, Washington, DC, Chase Trivett, Nashville; sister, Mary Emma Martin, Piney Flats, TN; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; several nieces & nephews.

Services will be conducted at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at Piney Flats Presbyterian Church, Piney Flats, TN, with Dr. Robert Rainwater and Rev. Gary Grogg officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the church prior to the service. Interment will be in Shell Cemetery, Piney Flats, with grandsons Michael Brookshire, Danny Brookshire, Chase Trivett, and nephews Don King, Carroll Shell, Larry Torbett, John Trivett and Rick Trivett serving as pallbearers.

The family wishes to extend a special “Thank You” to Phyllis Rice for her excellent and loving care for the past 2 years that allowed Ruth to live at her home until her death.

Herman Haden Trivette, age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, Entered in to the presence of his heavenly father on Friday morning, September 14, 2018 at his home, surrounded by family. He was born September 24, 1933, in Johnson County, Shouns, TN to the late John Trivette and RoAnn Johnson Trivette. In addition to his parents Herman was preceded in death by sisters, Ruth Canter Roark and Viola Christine Trivette.

Herman was a farmer throughout the years and enjoyed being outdoors. He loved people and having company especially being with his family and will be truly missed by all who knew him. Herman was a Minister for over 40 years and preached until he wasn't physically able in mid-August at Ackerson Creek Church of Christ.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 58 years, Betty Sue Gentry Trivette, daughters, LaDonna Trivette, Pamela Arnold and husband Freddie, Jennifer Young and husband Robert, grandchildren, Jason Arnold and wife Holly, Justin Arnold, Cody Young, Tiffany Young and Alex Young, one great grandchild, Kinslee Arnold, sister, Rita Roten, brothers, J.D. Patsy "Tine" Eggers passed away on Saturday November 17, 2018 at her residence. She was born On January 8th, 1942, in Shouns, TN to the late Garfield Trivette and Vira Martin Trivette. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Ottis Trivette, Clay Trivette, Verdie Mae Stout, Eula Faye Courtner, Bob Trivette, Dean Trivette, Arlis Trivette, and her best friend Maxine King.

Tine worked for many years at the Mountain City Glove Plant. When she wasn't working, she loved working in her flower garden. She was a member of the Rainbow Mennonite Church. Ted Trivett, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. He was born on March 2, 1923 to the late Clyde James Trivett and Sally Ethel Martin Trivett. In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Juanita Marie Walsh Trivett; sisters: Wilma Trivett Walsh and Margie Trivett Taylor and brother, Johnie Glenn Trivette; brothers-in-law: Wade Taylor, Dana Walsh, Luther Rupard and Sam Taylor.

Ted owned and operated his own sawmill for many years. He loved being outdoors and had a special love for sawmill work. He was an avid coon hunter. He studied forestry and fire- fighting techniques with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a great story teller and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Those left to cherish his memories include his sons: Ted 'Junior' Trivett and wife Mary, Gary Trivett and wife Tracy; daughter, Phyllis Lipford and husband Glenn, all of Mountain City, TN; sisters: Gladys Rupard of Laurel Bloomery, TN and Irene Taylor of Mountain City, TN; brother, Earl Trivette of Mountain City, TN; sister-in-law, Cathleen 'Kitty' Trivette; special neighbor, Lois Combs; special caregiver, Barbara Sexton; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Irene Taylor, age 93 of 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, Tennessee, surrounded by his family, passed away on Thursday January 24, 2019 in the Mountain City Care Center. Irene was born in Mountain City, TN, on August 3, 1925 to Clyde Trivette and Sally Martin Trivette and is also is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Sam E. Taylor as well as brothers Glenn and Ted Trivette, and Wilma Walsh and Margie Taylor.



Irene was a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church, she loved flower gardening digging herbs and just the outdoors in general.

Her survivors include daughter Alma Howard, Mtn City, Tn. Son Jim Taylor, Mountain City, TN.

Sister Gladys Rupard, Laurel Bloomery, TN Brother Earl Trivette of Mountain City, TN. Grandchildren Jeffrey Harrison, Jimmy Taylor, Michael Taylor, and David Taylor.

The funeral service for Irene will be conducted on Sunday January 27, 2019 in the Charles B Hux Chapel of Hux & Lipford at 7 pm. with Rev. Steven Spencer to officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7 pm. Graveside services will be conducted on Monday morning at 11 am in the Reece cemetery everyone is asked to assemble at the cemetery at 10 45 am.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Harrison, Michael Tanner, David Taylor, Jimmy Taylor, J.R. Trivette, and Jim Taylor.

Nell T. Moody, 99, of Elk Park, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012, at Life Care Center of Banner Elk.

A native of Avery County, she was born on Dec. 12, 1912, a daughter of the late William and Lillie Jane Holtsclaw Turbyfill.

She was a member of Taylor Chapel and graduated from Cranberry High School in 1932.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Moody; sisters, Lora Richardson, Ruth Johnson, Hazel Hamby, Frankie Cook and Stella Potter; brothers, Charlie, Lon, Ben and Paul Turbyfill.

Moody is survived by her daughters, Louise Winters of Cleveland, Ohio, Gerri Kincaid of Pineola; grandchildren, Charlie Kincaid of North Carolina, Rob Kincaid of North Carolina, Mitzi Kincaid of North Carolina, Judy Workman of Virginia, JoAnn Winters of Ohio, Gregg Winters of Virginia, Barbara Wonkolvich of Ohio; 13 great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services for Moody were held Friday, Feb. 3, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home. Interment followed in Taylor Chapel Cemetery.

Jerry Thomas Sutherland, age 65, of Mountain City, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Mountain City, TN September 6, 1953 to the late Buster Sutherland and Mae (Trivette) Sutherland. In addition to his parents, Jerry was preceded in death by two brothers, Carrol "Pudge" Sutherland and Jack Sutherland.

Jerry was a member of Corinth Baptist Church in Laurel Bloomery, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday School Teacher. He also loved bluegrass gospel music and enjoyed singing in the church choir. He spent 41 years working as a surface miner in the coal fields of West Virginia. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family. He cherished Sunday family dinners. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite teams, the Atlanta Braves and the Tennessee Volunteers.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife of 46 years, Cathy Sutherland; brother, Joe Sutherland and wife Lena; sister-in-law, Georgia Sutherland; children, Jeff Sutherland and wife Christina, Blake Sutherland and wife Casey; grandchildren, Allison, Chloe and Adalynn and others that called him "Paw" Brandon, Corbin, and Marissa; niece, Donna Sargent and husband Brian; nephew, David Sutherland and wife Yvonne; great-nephew and great-nieces and many more friends and church family.

JOHNSON CITY - Thomas Earl Earp, Sr., 73 years young, of Johnson City, TN. has made his journey to be with his Lord and Savior.

He left this world surrounded by family on Saturday, July 7, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Thomas was a faithful and lifetime member of the Johnson City Church of God, and loved his "Collins brothers and sisters." He retired from the State of Maryland as a Stationary Engineer, and moved back home to Tennessee after his retirement.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Sue Earp and a son, Thomas Earl Earp Jr. He was the son of the late Howard William Earp and Clara Ruth Arnold Earp, and grandson of the late George Calloway Earp and Nealie Alice Trivette and James Claiborne Arnold and Mabel Patience Dykes.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary Cathryn Walker Earp; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth (Beth) Runion and husband, Michael of Jonesborough; a son, James Wyatt Earp Sr. and wife, Julie of Essex, MD; seven beloved grandchildren, Stephanie, Joshua, Emily and Kaitlyn Runion of TN and Alicia, James Wyatt Jr. and Juliana Earp of MD; as well as one very special great-grandson, Malachi Chase Ellis. Thomas is also survived by his loyal and dedicated brother, Leslie and wife, Cheryl Earp and sister, Bonnie Huffman of Johnson City; also many nieces, nephews and cousins; He also leaves behind his beloved pet dogs Coco and Princess and cat Sweetie Pie to be cared for by Mary Earp.

Funeral services for Thomas will be conducted at 2:00 PM Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in the East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home, 800 E. Watauga Avenue, Johnson City with Rev. C. Bryant Collins officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 Noon until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be James W. The family relays special thanks to the staff, especially the compassionate CNA's and nurse, Sam at the Waters Facility in Johnson City for their care during the last several months he was with us, as well as to the physicians and staff he has seen over the years.

JOHNSON CITY - Leslie John Earp, Sr., age 74, of Johnson City, Tennessee, gained his wings on January 27, 2023, at the Johnson City Medical Center.

A lifelong resident of Johnson City, Leslie was born December 20, 1948, to the late Howard William Earp and Clara Ruth Arnold Earp. He graduated from Science Hill High School. In 1968, he married his childhood friend and the love of his life, Cheryl Norris.

Leslie was a member of University Parkway Baptist Church.

Leslie loved anything that had to do with cars or a motor. He was a skilled mechanic who repaired lawn mowers and vehicles. He also enjoyed NASCAR and he liked to put together model cars.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas Earl Earp, Sr.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 54 years, Cheryl; his children, Leslie John Earp Jr., Kimberly Willis, and Rebecca Bennett; 11 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; a sister, Bonnie Huffman; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Lara Kfoury for her care and compassion.

She enjoyed singing, attending church services, revivals and spending time with her friends and family. Lucille also loved the family dog, “Buddy” who was a great companion and comfort to her. Steve Eggers age 55, Of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Monday March 9th, 2020 at his residence. Steve was born on July 21, 1964 in Boone, N.C. to the late Lloyd Eggers and Patsy Trivette Eggers.
He was a construction worker.
He loved riding motorcycles, gardening and arrowhead hunting.

A native of Avery County, NC, she was born January 10, 1926, a daughter of the late Warren and Minnie Guy Turbyfill. Lois loved crafting, quilting, crocheting, knitting and spending time in the beauty of her gardens.

Mrs. Ward was a member of the Heaton Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Winford Ward; two children, Timmy and Carol Ward; and her brothers, Bill and Bob Turbyfill.

A loving "Ma", she leaves behind her sons, Joe and Judy Ward of Banner Elk, Danny and Carolyn Ward of Banner Elk; daughter, Patsy and Gary Vance of Banner Elk; sister in law, Sue Turbyfill of Zephyrhills, FL; along with her six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.

He was a member of the Lower Shell Creek Christian Church and enjoyed fishing and gardening.

Jerry Leonard Potter, 75, of Elk Park, N.C., joined God's Army on Thursday, May 27th, 2021 at his home.

He was the youngest son of the late John H. and Stella Turbyfill Potter. He was also preceded in death by his brothers: William Potter and Plez Potter; sisters: Lillie Belle Clawson, Lucille Holtsclaw and Cassie Bruton and special sister-in-law, Tiny Church.

Jerry enjoyed farming and was a fowl enthusiast. He loved his family and their adopted kids. He gathered them like the Pied Piper. Jerry was a U.S. Army Veteran who loved his country. He fought a good fight and is at peace with God now.

Annie Louella Johnson Hicks, 81, formally of Elk Park, NC passed away on Sunday, March 25, 2018 at Autumn Care in Drexel, NC.

She was born on May 13, 1936, in Avery County, North Carolina, a daughter of Jesse James Johnson and Ruth Turbyfill Johnson.

Annie worked in the glove factory in Banner Elk. She loved the Lord and singing in the choir. She used to walk with her children seven miles round trip to church. Annie loved spending time with her family and cooking. She loved watching her cockatiel Clyde.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her: Husband, Carl Herman Hicks; and her oldest son Wayne Hicks; Grandson: Darrell Wayne Hicks; Brother: Bobby James Johnson; Sister: Lola Mae Johnson; Granddaughter: Amanda McKinney.

Buddy Joe Hamby, age 57, of Elk Park, NC, passed away on Sunday, April 14, 2019. The son of the late John and Hazel Turbyfill Hamby, he was born in Avery County, NC on July 7, 1961.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by eight siblings, Christine Hamby, Ruby Clawson, Shirley Bare, RD Hamby, JC Hamby, Haroldene Hamby, Frankie Harmon and Kenneth Wayne Hamby.

Buddy, along with his brother, at the age of 14 began to work in construction and has always built things with his hands.

He is survived by three Children: Tammy Denise Resendiz (Jose) of Boone, NC; Joseph Allen Hamby (Jennifer) of Marion, NC, and Jessica Ann Resendiz (Juan) of Deep Gap, NC; and five Siblings: Barbara Townsend (Leroy) of Foscoe, NC, Ricky Hamby (Wanda) of Banner Elk, NC, Wanda Hicks (Charles) of Foscoe, NC, Dayton Hamby (Pansy) of Elk Park, NC and Keith Hamby of Elk Park, NC. Buddy is also survived by 10 grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and a number of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his Buddy's life will be held 3 p.m. on Friday, April 19, 2019, at Elk Park Christian Church, 220 Old Mill Road in Elk Park, with Pastor Barry Shepard officiating.

Ray Turbyfill, age 73, of Roan Mountain, Tenn., passed away on Thursday, July 4, 2019, at the Johnson City Medical Center. Ray was born in Avery County, NC to the late Clifford Ben Turbyfill and Florence Jack Johnson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant Brother: Billy Turbyfill; and two Sisters: Peggy Turbyfill and Geraldine Gwinn.

Ray was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather and was of the Christian faith. He had worked in distribution services for Ingles for more than 10 years. Ray loved growing things such as flowers and trees — he was a wonderful nurturer. He loved children, painting and building and crafting buildings.

Those left to cherish his memory include his loving and devoted Wife of 27 years: Valleree Jean Queen Turbyfill, of the home; his Children: Doug Turbyfill, Dale Turbyfill, Patty Flowers, Michael Williams, Christopher Hooks and Jake Turbyfill; 14 Grandchildren; 12 Great Grandchildren; Sisters: Joann Taylor, Jill Jones and Patty Hicks; and his Brothers: Earl Turbyfill, Michael Turbyfill, Danny Turbyfill, Donny Turbyfill and Hobert Turbyfill. A graveside service to celebrate the life of Ray Turbyfill will be conducted at 10 a.m. in the Johnson Roanview Cemetery in Roan Mountain, Tenn., with Pastor Marvin Slagle, officiating. Active pallbearers will be Jake Turbyfill, Michael Williams, Tanner Hooks, Mitchell Markland, Christopher Callaway and Jordan Callaway. Those wishing to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Tetrick Funeral Home in Roan Mountain Rhododendron Chapel at 9:45 a.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, to go in procession to the cemetery.

On Saturday, March 14, 2020, Jimmy L. Hicks, age 82, a lifelong resident of Elk Park, N.C. passed from this earthly home to his eternal home in heaven due to complications of Parkinson Disease.

Those left to cherish his memory include the love of his life and Wife of 58 years: Lena Clark Hicks. Together they built successful businesses and raised a wonderful family that includes a Daughter: Messie Harris and husband Mark; three Sons: Larry Hicks and wife Kim, Tim (Hoss) Hicks, Robert (Tooter) Hicks and wife Shannon; Beloved Grandchildren: Holly Barker and boyfriend, JoJo Yorke, Alex Barker and wife, Allison, Haley Manus and husband, Brandon, Trey Hicks and wife, Megan, Trevor Bollinger, Madison Hicks and boyfriend, Logan Street, Natalie Hicks, Josh Harris and wife, Cassie, Dane Harris and fiancé, Mary Potter, Kaylea Shelton; and Great-Granddaughter: Pailyn Hicks; two Sisters: Aleta Cornett (Jim) and Barbara Blackburn; special Family members: Doug and Donna Atchley, Mike and Kim Davis, Brian and Theresa King, Bruce and Sherry King, Dean and Tami Hagie, and many more who throughout his lifetime he called family.

Jim was the son of the late Ruby and Henry Hicks of Elk Park, NC. Preceding him in death are Brothers: Junior, Jack, and Jerry Hicks; Sister: Deloris Isaacs; Brothers in- Laws: Buck Isaacs and Bob Blackburn; Nephew: David Hicks, and Niece: Jenny Blackburn.

Jim dedicated his life to being a devoted and loving husband, Dad, Papaw, Uncle, Brother, and friend. Jim delighted in family time. Jim’s dinner table was always large enough for the entire family as they gathered for Lena’s Sunday lunch.

He was a member of the Cranberry High School Class of 1956 and a bus driver and member of the football team. Jim was proud to be a lifetime member of Elk Park Christian Church, where he served as a board member and deacon. Jim was a founding member of the Liar’s Table at The Country House. He served his community as a town alderman, board member of Carter County Bank and the Cranberrian Corporation. He sponsored Elk Park’s Little League baseball and football teams for many years. Jim loved opportunities to advance his community and help others.

Jim was a lifelong truck driver, businessmen and tree farmer. He drove millions of miles with fellow truckers at Underwood and Weld, Rufus Henley Trucking, Northeastern, and Carolina Western, traveling north to south and east to west. In the 1980s, blue Peterbilts began hauling east to west as H&H Express, Inc.

From 1972 until 1990, Jim and Lena also owned and operated a grocery store in Elk Park, selling groceries, gas, feed, coal, fence post and just about anything that was needed. After selling the store business, they purchased Blue Ridge Orchard, growing trees and nursery stock. Jim enjoyed his later years working on the farm, daily visits to Brinkley Hardware, the Elk Park Post Office, Country House, and hanging out with the boys at H&H.

Jim loved God and lived his life at the foot of the cross as a living example. Jim leaves his family uncountable life lessons, memories, unlimited and unconditional love. His family will always remember his words to them: “pray for each other, and take care of each other,” and “time changes all things.” He would always tell his grandchildren to “keep your eyes on the road and your mind on your business” as he taught them to drive anything with a motor. When you ask Jim how he was doing, he would say “not good, but super good.” He told his children many times “In this life we will have to do a lot of things, but one thing we do not have to do is complain.” His advice to everyone was “always to pray about it first before making a decision.” As he would say to us today, “Carry on!”

Funeral services for Jimmy will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 17, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Visitation will take place from 5 to 7 p.m., two hours prior to the service, at the church. Interment will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, March 18, at Blue Ridge Orchard Cemetery, on Floyd Hayes Lane in Elk Park.

Jack Robert Hicks, 77, of Elk Park, NC passed away on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. A native of Avery County, he was born May 18, 1942, the middle of the late Henry and Ruby Hicks’ seven children.

If you loved Southern Gospel Music, shiny trucks, and stories of years on the road, then you loved being around Jack — a man with an 8th grade education who built a business to be proud of. The trucks that he loved so much all bear John 3:16.

Jack was born to drive. He took a 1940 Ford truck with a flathead engine and 95hp and drove it to Crank’s Creek, Ky. to pick up a load of coal. In 1977 he bought his first truck; 10 years later he started Jack Hicks, Inc., the company that has been his life’s work and passion. Jack was quick to share the credit for his success with his wife and employees.

In addition to his parents, Jack is preceded in death by Brothers: Junior and Jerry Hicks; and Sister: Delores Issacs.

Left to cherish his memory are his Wife of 27 years: Angela Hicks; Daughters: Donna Spencer (Donald) and Melissa Hampton; Grandchildren: Jack McCloud (Sarah), Jacqueline Gilliam (Jesse), Aiden, Dawson, and Gavin Spencer, Luke, Mallory and Jed Childress, Sunni Dearmin, and Hayden Brewer, and Jake and Briana Pritchard; Brother: Jim Hicks (Lena), Sisters: Barbara Blackburn (Bob) and Aleta Cornett (Jim); Great-grandchildren: Brianna and Nathan McCloud and Chase, Logan, and Mason Gilliam; and many nieces, and nephews.

Funeral services for Jack Hicks will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 14, at the Elk Park Christian Church. Rev. Matt Dibler and Rev. Tommy Carver will officiate. The family will receive friends from noon until the service hour. Interment will follow in the Hicks Family Cemetery. Robert Burleson, Patrick Childress, Jed Childress, Luke Childress, Chris Bare, Tudor Hicks and Perry Daniels will serve as pallbearers.

Brenda Kay Geouge, 71, of Roan Mountain, passed away Friday, December 21, 2018, at The Waters of Roan Highlands after an extended illness.
Born January 10, 1947 in Banner Elk, N.C., to the late Floyd and Sadie Jaber Moody, she had lived her entire life in the Roan Mountain area.
Brenda was a 1965 graduate of Cloudland High School and was retired due to disability as a Respiratory Therapist from Cannon Memorial Hospital. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain. Her hobbies were arts and crafts, scrapbooks and she was a huge Elvis Presley fan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Conway Geouge, in 2007.
Survivors include a son, Kevin Moody, Bluff City; one grandson, Tyler Moody; one sister, Peggy Jean Stanley, Roan Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.
A service to celebrate the life of Brenda Geouge was conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 23, at First Baptist Church, Roan Mountain, with the Rev. Geren Street officiating. The family received friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church. The family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff of The Waters of Roan Highlands for their kindness, care and compassion. It was her wish to be cremated.

Linda Thomas Whittington, 80 of Elk Park, N.C., departed this life unexpectedly at her home on Monday, October 18, 2021.
Born January 16, 1941 in Banner Elk, NC to the late Floyd "Shorty" Thomas and Irene Turbyfill Thomas. Linda grew up in Cranberry and attended the Cranberry high school where she and her sister were cheerleaders.
Linda was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a sister, Kathi Gray; a twin sister, Sandra Ollis; and one brother, Robert Thomas.
Linda was a member of Elk Park Christian Church. She enjoyed being at home and spending time with her family.
Survivors include husband, Charles "Chuck" Whittington and son; Tim of the home; one daughter, Beth (Mike) Wagstaff, Winston Salem, NC; sons, Mark (Meesie) Harris, Greg (Diann) Harris of Elk Park; Eddie (Melissa) Harris, Johnson City, TN; step son, Don (Mary) Whittington, of Oklahoma; six grandchildren and one great grandson. Many friends and relatives also survive.
Services for Linda Thomas Whittington will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at the Elk Park Christian Church, with Rev. DeWayne Sabisch officiating.

Wayne Turbyfill, 72, of Heaton, N.C., went home to be with our Lord on Monday, December 18, 2017, while comfortably surrounded by his family.
He was the second oldest son born at Grace Hospital in Banner Elk to the late Ernest and Beulah Turbyfill from Blevins Creek.
Wayne was married to Loraine Turbyfill where together they owned the Cranberry 76 Service Station before he retired. He was a well-known mechanic and tow-truck driver amongst his other skill sets. He loved drag racing, being around those he loved and talking about times gone by.
He is survived by his wife, Loraine Odom Turbyfill; their daughter and son-in-law, Brandy and Daniel Boone; two grandsons, Bentley and Braxton Boone; his daughter and son-in-law, Renae and Josh Brown; two granddaughters, Krystal Turbyfill and Allison Brown; his son, Jackie Turbyfill, and granddaughter, Britney Turbyfill; along with many siblings, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends that have become family.

Nicholas Forrest "Buddy" Winebarger, Jr., 79, of Montezuma, North Carolina passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022 at his residence.

Buddy was born on June 26, 1943 in Avery County, North Carolina, the oldest of nine children born to the late Nicholas Forrest Winebarger and the late Gertrude Turbyfill Winebarger.

He graduated from Newland High School. Buddy retired after 40-plus years with Linville Resorts, starting as Caddy Master at the club during the summer, and working maintenance during the winter.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed his membership with the Kiwanis Fishing Club. After retirement, he also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren where he became the on-call babysitter extraordinaire.

He was preceded in death by his father, Nicholas Forrest Winebarger; mother, Gertrude Turbyfill Winebarger; two brothers, Allen Winebarger, David Winebarger; three sisters, Evelyn Brubaker, Nancy Frisbee, Tina Buchanan.

Buddy leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 45 years, Debbie Lane Winebarger; three daughters, Amanda Jane Winebarger (Fiance' Kevin) of Newland, NC, Nicki Lynne (James) Hastings of Bakersville, NC, Paula Bynnom of Nebo, NC; four grandsons, Avram Hastings, Chase Downing, Daniel Dyer, Jayden Bynnom; two granddaughters, Leah Brabham, Liora Hastings; Two Brothers, Bobby (Karen) Winebarger of Celo, NC, Bruce Winebarger of Marion, NC; sister, Brenda (Lamar) Stanley of Newland, NC.

Clara was preceded in death by her father, Henry Walter Holden, and mother, Clara Mable Johnson Tyree. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Howard Deloach Sr., and sons, William Howard Deloach Jr. and Henry Walter Deloach; sisters, Phyllis Holden and Annabelle Miller; brothers, Ernest Holden, Bill Clyde Holden and Paul Henry Holden; and sister and brother-In-law, Frances and Roy Burrow.
Clara was a member of First Free Will Baptist Church and the Emma Williams Sunday School Class for more than 60 years.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 27, at Happy Valley Memorial Park with Pastor Nathan Jennings officiating. Samuel McLester "Sammy" Trivette, Jr., age 58, of Elk Park, passed away Monday evening, Jan. 27, 2020, at his home.

Sammy was born Feb. 10, 1961, in Watauga County, a son of Velma Ruth Greene Trivette and the late Samuel McLester Trivette, Sr. He was a truck driver for John Greene Trucking.

Sammy is survived by his Wife: Leta Ward Trivette of the home; two Daughters: Beth Dishman and husband Carter of Sugar Grove, and Heather Trivette Lyons of Elk Park; two Sons: Sammy Joe Trivette and wife Michele of Banner Elk, and Brett Trivette of Newland; three Granddaughters: Ida Grace and Anna Dishman, and Addison Trivette; three Grandsons: Noah Cash Dishman, Jett Lyons, and Weston Trivette; his Mother: Velma Ruth Trivette of Mentor, Ohio; two Sisters: Betsy Kuser and husband John of Toledo, Ohio, and Gloria Rogers of Catawba Island, Ohio, and one Brother: Glenn Trivette of Mentor, Ohio. Evelyn JoAnn Deloach Odom, 73, Elizabethton, went home to be with her Lord, Saturday, January 28, 2023, at her residence. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late William Howard Deloach Sr. and Clara Marie Holden Deloach. Evelyn was a housewife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She was a member of Valley Forge House of Prayer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Deloach and William Deloach Jr. Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Roger Odom Sr.; two daughters, Remetha Dawn Loving and Rebecca Dianne (Melvin) Simmons, all of Elizabethton; a son, Roger D.
