Funeral Services were conducted at the Watauga Methodist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Jay B. Osborne and Dr. E. H. Yankee officiating. Burial was the Caldwell Springs Cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sarah Jane Elliott, age 62, who died Sunday morning, were held this afternoon at 2:30. Burial was made in the Caldwell Springs cemetery.

Nellie Myrtle Phipps Heaton, age 95, of Johnson City, went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Thursday, April 21, 2005 at Johnson City Medical Center. Myrtle was born May 19, 1909, in Johnson County, Tennessee and until just recently was able to recount a lot of stories of her life for the last 96 years. Myrtle was the daughter of the late John Hamilton Phipps who preceded her in death in 1947 and the late Amanda Eliza Wilkins Phipps who preceded her in death in 1972. She was the eldest of eight children. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three husbands, Luther ?Luke? Elliott, Fred Sammons and Clint Heaton, three brothers, Steve Phipps, Johnny Phipps and Peter Phipps and one sister Leticia Phipps. A nine-year-old son, Ray Elliott, also preceded Myrtle in death in 1940. Surviving Mrs. Heaton is one daughter, Mary Grace Collins, one brother, Coy Phipps, two sisters, Lexie Phipps Garland and Mary Phipps Byrd and her husband, Rev. D. C. Byrd, all of Johnson City, several nieces and nephews and a special niece, Judy Garland Sluder. A celebration of Myrtle?s life will be held on Sunday, April 24, 2005 at 2:00 PM at Morris-Baker Funeral Home South Chapel. Interment will follow services at Monte Vista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.

Lexie Phipps Garland, age 89, of Johnson City, died Friday, April 4, 2008. Lexie was born Friday, January 24, 1919 in Johnson County, TN, having lived most of her life in Johnson City. She was a member of Keystone Freewill Baptist Church where she was a former deacon?s wife and Sunday school teacher. She was formerly employed at Bemberg, Elizabethton, TN. Lexie was the daughter of the late John Hamilton Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1947, and the late Amanda Eliza Wilkins Phipps, who preceded her in death in 1972. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years, Selmar Garland in 1983, three brothers, Steve Phipps, Johnny Phipps and Peter Phipps, and two sisters, Leticia Phipps and Myrtle Phipps Heaton. Survivors include two sons and one daughter, eldest child, James Thomas Garland of Knoxville; twins, Ronald David Garland of Knoxville and Judy Ann Garland Sluder & husband David Sluder of Elizabethton. Also surviving are one brother, Coy Phipps and one sister, Mary Phipps Byrd and husband Rev. D.C. Byrd, all of Johnson City; one sister-in-law, Lena Phipps of Elizabethton; several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. D.C. Byrd; two daughters: Bernice Moore and Sharon Street; three brothers: Johnnie, Steve and Peter Phipps; three sisters: Lutishia Phipps, Myrtle Heaton and Lexie Garland.

She is survived by her son and daughter in law, Darrell and Cinda Byrd; two sons-in-law, Fred Moore and Richard Street; four granddaughters and their husbands, Kristi and Kevin Colbaugh, Kara and Josh McGee, Dawn and Rev. Nathan Jennings, Mandy and Wes Greer; eight great grandchildren, Nick, Tyler, Kaylee, Ashlee, Abby, Shay, Riley and Elisha; one brother, Coy Phipps; sister-in-laws, Lena Phipps, Georgia King and Ida Hanuvoski; and one brother-in-law, D.H. Roscoe Elliott Dies Of Own Hands Coroner Reports
Roscoe Lawrence Elliott, 32, "died by his own hands" at his home on Scenic Drive Sunday afternoon at 6 p.m., according to findings of the coroner's jury report.
Deputy Sheriff Harlan Oakes said that the deceased "had shot himself with a .22 gauge rifle while his wife was away from home at a neighbor's home.
Those on the jury were the Coroner Roy Merritt, O. B. Collins, P. J. Little, J. R. Lyons, Floyd Church, Worley Merritt, Russell Fraley. Deputies who investigated were Oakes and Nidiffer.

Lela Ensor Bailey, 95, of Elizabethton, passed away Wednesday, February 17, 2016, at Ivy Hall Nursing Home. A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Jessie White Ensor. Mrs. Bailey was a graduate of Unaka High School, East Tennessee State College and received her Master's of Education from Oklahoma State University. Her career in teaching started at Midway Elementary School on Stoney Creek. She moved to Louisville, Ky., where she taught school in Jefferson County for over 20 years. She returned to Stoney Creek 30 years ago. She was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Bailey; five sisters, Amelia Nidiffer, Mary "Poll" Ensor, Tilda Grindstaff, Dorothy "Dot" Kress and Ruth Garrison; and five brothers, John, Dan, Ben, Cecil and Jim Ensor. Survivors include a son, George Robert Bailey and wife Porter Watkins, Louisville, Ky.; a step-son, Kenneth Bailey, Louisville, Ky.; and several nieces and nephews. Evelyn Delilah (Ensor) Brizzolara passed away at Share Medical Center in Alva, Oklahoma, on November 24, 2019 after a short illness.

She was a devoted wife and loving mother; she was a friend to all whose lives she touched. She was a homemaker, and an active community volunteer.

Born in Alva on May 10, 1934, she was the daughter of Dr. Daniel B. and Mrs. Grace Ensor. Her very early years were spent in Hopeton where her father had a medical practice. Her family relocated to Alva where she finished school and graduated with the Class of 1951. After attending Northwestern Oklahoma State University for her freshman year, she transferred to Sophie Newcomb College in New Orleans, Louisiana where she earned a B.A. in Anthropology and became a lifelong jazz enthusiast.

Evelyn traveled extensively in Europe with her mother during and shortly after her college days. While in France, she was frequently mistaken for the actress Leslie Caron. She and her mother enjoyed the offer of free taxi rides and other tokens resulting from this mistaken identity. Always adventurous, she later explored behind the Iron Curtain in communist Yugoslavia.

She married Raymond E. Tompkins with whom she had three children. She worked as an advocate in the children's court in Oklahoma County.

She met and married Harold (Hal) Brizzolara from San Mateo, California in 1964.

Hal and Evelyn and their children settled in northern California where they were blessed with the birth of another son. Evelyn made a loving home and set a model of community service for her children. An active Pink Lady volunteer for the local hospital as well as a Cub Scout/Girl Scout leader, she served for a number of years on the Nevada County School Board and oversaw the building of a new elementary school for the community. She was also active in Republican politics. In 1974 Evelyn, Hal, and their children moved to Alva where Hal had purchased an accounting practice.

Evelyn was a longtime member of P.E.O, the Cherokee Outlet Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Order of the Eastern Star of the State of Oklahoma, and Holly Club. She continued volunteer service through Meals-on-Wheels, as chairman of the Alva Cemetery Board, and other public and church related activities. For many years, she served on the board of directors of the Hopeton State Bank.

She was an avid crafter and quilter, winning many awards for her quilts. An enthusiastic book collector of signed, first edition mysteries and espionage fiction, she traveled extensively with Hal throughout the Southwest and California seeking out treasures for their collection.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents and her elder sister, Dana, as well as by her infant son, Michael. She is survived by her husband, Hal, of the home, and her children Chris Brizzolara of Santa Monica, California, Kay Brizzolara and husband PJ Pronger III of Amarillo, Texas, and Jeff Brizzolara and his wife Kelli of Dallas, Texas, and their respective children: PJ Pronger IV and wife Beth of Amarillo, Texas, Lauren Pronger of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Parker, Presley, and Palmer Brizzolara of Dallas, Texas.

Graveside Service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday, December 2, 2019 in the Ensor Cemetery with Father Timothy Holder officiating. Pallbearers will be selected from family.

GRAY - Carolyn Ann Wyatt (Phipps), 76, of Gray, TN passed away peacefully at her home on Saturday, January 14, 2023 surrounded by her family. Carolyn was a lifelong resident of Gray. She was the daughter of William and Ethel Phipps. Carolyn was a homemaker and a cook second to none. She loved cooking large meals for her family. Carolyn is preceded in death by her parents, William and Ethel Phipps; her brothers, Coy Phipps, Millard Phipps, Willard Phipps, Charles William “Bill” Phipps, Carmon Phipps and Allen Phipps; her sisters, Etta Phipps Richardson, Dorothy Phipps Greenburg, Annetta Phipps and Lynda Phipps; and her beloved dog, Bo.

Survivors include her loving husband of 56 years, Morris Wyatt; son and his wife, Craig and Juanita Wyatt; granddaughter and her husband, Logan Doan (Wyatt) and David; brother, Adrian Phipps; sister, Evelyn Chesser; sister and her husband, Jeannette Honeycutt and Daryl; several nieces and nephews; and her dog, Mattie.

Funeral is to be conducted at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the home, in charge of the Rev. A. D. Hoffman, with burial in the Colbaugh Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Alvin Bowman and John Large.

John Wayne "Abe" Elliott, born in 1947, died January 15, 2017. He surrendered to cancer. He did not live to be 100 and not shot by a jealous husband as he joked about.

She had taught at Unaka Elementary, Buladean Elementary and Midway Elementary Schools. She was a member of the Carter County Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Bishop was a member of the Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Chalmer Bishop, two sisters: Velma Davis and Moilee Lewis and three brothers: Elbert Kress, Robert and Ivan Ensor.

He was retired from Tri-State Container. He was an avid sportsman and loved to fish, hunt, and watch sports.

He was a member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church where he loved his Sunday School Class. Tops was the widow of T/Sgt Herbert Kehrli and the eldest daughter of the late Robert "Bo" and Tilda Grindstaff. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Eldon and Lloyd Grindstaff, and sisters, Clara (infant), Lela Pearl Southerland, Bertie Ruth Milhorn and Mary "Monk" Lewis; brothers-in-law, Lee Southerland and Norman Kehrli; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Grindstaff.
Tops is survived by three daughters, Alice Marie Pendergast (Mike), of Cullowhee, N.C., Ann Taylor (Javy), of Elizabethton, and Debbie Bishop, of Johnson City; and six grandchildren, Aaron Pendergast (Teresa), Brandon Pendergast (Stephanie), Julie Phillips (Adam), Courtney Taylor, Jaclyn Wilson (Chris) and Tara Collins (Davey). Her great-grandchildren include Lauren Pendergast, Kelly Pendergast, TJ Rose, Caleb Phillips, Evan Phillips, Kimberly Proffitt, Mason Wilson and Aubrey Collins. Tops remained the widow of T/Sgt Herbert Kehrli, killed in action in Viet Nam in 1968, until the time of her passing. She dedicated her time to raising her three daughters. She was blessed with the gift of hospitality and loved nothing more than having a house full of family and friends to cook for. She was a lifelong member of Dungan Chapel Baptist Church. Tops loved her church family and her "pew-buddy," Billy Bob Garrison.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert Cecil & Cora Ellen Gentry Ensor. He was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School. He was also a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theology Seminary with a degree in Music & Religion Education.

He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. HE served in the Vietnam Era. Robert was a member of the Lynn Valley Baptist Church. He loved writing poetry and sharing his gift with others. He also loved music and working with children.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Raymond Ensor; mother and father-in-law, Van & Jewell Edwards; and a sister-in-law, Elaine.

Mr. Ensor graduated from Unaka High School in 1958. He joined the Army and retired many years later.

She was a retired employee of Kingsport Press after 18 years of service. She was very active in her church, Dungan Chapel Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Church Choir, served as church clerk and active in the WMU for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Stanley, Raymond, Robert & C. Lee Ensor and two nephews: Randy & Ricky Ensor.

Kathleen J. Glover, Elizabethton, passed away unexpectedly on May 13th, 2021 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Clara Pierce Lewis. She was also preceded in death by her husband William Robert Glover, a Son Eric Sage Glover, a sister Yvonne Fowler, and two brothers Orville Lewis and Sturgill Lewis. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Bob & Molly Glover. Six Grandchildren, Leslie Luttrell(Robert), Rob Glover(Carrie), Brian Glover(Jessica), Weston Glover, Seth Glover and Ethan Glover. Two great-grandchildren, Emma, Nora and Jackson Glover. Several nieces and nephews. A private service for the family was previously held.

Glover and Lucille Roberson) was born about 1930 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; died on 6 Dec 2002 in Carter County, , , Tennessee; was buried in Happy Valley Memorial Park, , Carter County, Tennessee. ELIZABETHTON - Steven Gene Pierce, 65, Elizabethton, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2020 at his residence.

A native of Carter County, he was the son of the late Billy Gene & Bernice Grace Ensor Pierce. Steven was a 1972 graduate of Unaka High School and 1978 graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in Surveying Technology. He was founder & operator of Iron Mountain Surveying for 30 years. He was a retired fireman with the Johnson City Fire Department after 29 years of service. He was an avid musician and outdoorsman. He loved fishing, hunting, playing the guitar and gardening. Steven was a member of Dashiell Masonic Lodge # 238 and Carter Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years: Genia Peters Pierce. Two Children: Karen Pierce and special friend, Aaron Taylor, and Emily White & husband Bryan. One Grandson: Isaac White. A Sister: Donna Scofield & husband Don. Five Nieces & nephews: Hope, Jessie, Kate, Will and Zach.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Donald G. Scofield officiating. Graveside Service and Interment will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Blevins Cemetery with Pastor Don Brandon officiating. Active Pallbearers who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10:20 a.m. Thursday will be: Bryan White, Ty LaRue, Brian Barnette, Jeff Ensor, Ron Davis, Allen Shelnutt and Aaron Taylor. The family would like to express a very special “Thank You” to the Staff of Amedisys Hospice, the Staff of Johnson City Internal Medicine, and Dr. Jeff Hopland for the excellent care he received.
