JOHNSON CITY - Mary Loyd Stribling, 92, Johnson City, entered into rest on Tuesday, August 16, 2016 at her residence surrounded by family.

Mrs. Stribling was born in Mountain City, TN November 24, 1923 to the late Walter and Ethel Forrester Loyd. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years Dr. Herman A. Stribling, Jr. and her brother Mr. James F. Loyd.

Mrs. Stribling devoted her life to the service of others whether it was in the classroom or in her community. She will be best remembered as a most caring and beloved schoolteacher. She received her B.S. in Education from ETSU in 1945. While she taught at several schools throughout her 33-year career, she is most often associated with her time at Towne Acres Elementary. It was during her time there she was awarded Teacher of the Year for K-4 in 1986 for her school and district. As one parent of a student recalled, Mrs. Stribling was the "type of teacher who touches your heart, makes you want to learn, want to get up eagerly and go to school, want to do good, and make you do things you never thought you could do."

Mrs. Stribling was a member of the National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, Johnson City Education Association, Delta Kappa Gamma (past president), Phi Delta Kappa, and Business & Professional Women's Club (past president). She served on the Superintendent's Advisory Council, Southern Association Accreditation Committee, and Methodist Church Board. She received many accolades during her lifetime including, Outstanding Educator of the South, Honorary Life Member PTA, Silver Poet Award (World of Poetry) '86, Outstanding Leaders in Elementary & Secondary Education '76.

Mrs. Stribling was of the Christian faith and attended Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her daughter Dr. Vickie Grist and husband Dr. Dana Grist of Johnson City, TN; her son Dr. Buddy Stribling and wife Mrs. Debbie Stribling of Kingsport, TN; Four grandchildren Mrs. Jennifer Hite and husband Mr. Daniel Hite of Jonesborough, TN, Dr. Kathryn Grist of Johnson City, TN, Ms. Madison Stribling and Mr. Alex Stribling of Kingsport, TN; Great-Grandson Finnegan Hite of Jonesborough, TN; Sister-In-Law Mrs. Mildred Loyd, Houston, TX; Two nephews Mr. Leonard Loyd and wife Mrs. Karen Loyd of Cypress, TX, and Mr. Paul Loyd and wife Mrs. Barbara Loyd of Fredericksburg, TX.

The family would like to express their deepest thanks and gratitude to her primary caregiver, Mrs. Helen Burrough, for her tremendous love and care she demonstrated over the years attending to Mrs. Stribling. Special thanks to friends Mrs. Sandra Keebler and Mrs. Becky Hale for their friendship and care. Also thanks to Dr. Paul Brown, Jr, Melissa Leake, and staff of Johnson City Internal Medicine as well as Dr. Chad Drey of State of Franklin OBGYN Associates for their compassionate care. The family will receive friends at Tetrick Funeral and Cremation Services of Johnson City on Friday August 26, 2016 from 6:00pm-8:00pm as well as at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday August 27, 2016 beginning at 12:30pm. A service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Stribling will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday August 27, 2016 at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church with Reverends Mark Gooden and Michael Lester officiating. Private inurnment will be at Monte Vista Memorial Park.

The family requests in lieu of flowers that donations in memory of Mrs. Stribling may be made to either Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church's Pastor's Discretionary Fund or Children's Department.

Harold Edwin "Bear Claw" Phillippi, age 70, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away peacefully at his home in Doe Valley surrounded by family on Friday, October 12, 2018. Harold was born in Mountain City on June 29, 1948 to the late Edwin "Tuck" Phillippi and Mary Virginia Mullins Phillippi. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim and Bob Phillippi and paternal and maternal grandparents. Harold was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and the Good News Sunday School Class.

Harold was an avid hunter and spent many days and nights in the mountains hunting bear, raccoon, rabbits and deer. He was fond of his bear dogs and enjoyed the hunt as much as taking the animal. He was always willing to take the younger, inexperienced hunter and help them to experience his love of the mountains and hunting. Harold held the Tennessee State record when he checked in a black bear weighting 635 lbs

Harold is survived by his wife of 51 years, Faye Phillippi; two daughters, Lisa and her special friend Donnie and Jaycee Clawson; his mother, Virginia Phillippi; brother, Roby Phillippi and wife Carol; two grandsons, Ethan and Josh Clawson. Also surviving are multiple nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins who have fond memories of him. Sister-in-laws Virginia Manuel & husband Don, June Thomas & Friend Coleman, Ann Skewes & husband Mike, Harold had a special sister-in-law, Mae Matheson, who he entrusted to always be there to help him, Brother-in-law, Doran Swift & Wife Emogene.

He will be remembered by his many friends along with the members of the Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Stoney Creek Hunting Club, as well as many other hunting organizations.

The family will receive friends on Monday, October15, 2018 from 5 until 7 p.m. at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 7 p.m. with Pastors Gale Hartley, Spencer Roark and Dean Smith officiating. Music will be provided by the church choir. Pallbearers will be Josh Clawson, Jamie Phillippi, Jeremy Phillippi, Jeff Phillippi, Doug Thomas, Mike Roark, Jerry Roark, Bob Mullins and Blake Phillippi. Honorary pallbearers will be the men of Bethany Baptist Church, members of Doe Valley Sportsman Club, Mike Skewes, Dick Johnson, Jason Bryan, Ralph Matheson, Don Manuel, Doran Swift and Jerry Paul Stanberry. The graveside service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the Brookshire Cemetery.

Charles William 'Bill' Graybeal, age 71, of Mountain City, TN passed away Saturday August 10, 2019, in the Johnson City Medical Center. Bill was born on February 18th, 1948, to the late "Pete" Chester Clyde Graybeal, SR and Margaret Opal Phillippi Graybeal. In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by an infant sister. Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time in the outdoors.

Those left to cherish Bill's memory include his daughter; Joey Beth Souder and husband Chopper, son William Clay Graybeal, sisters Linda Hodge and husband Ted, and Susie Mink and husband Dean, brother "Buck" Chester Clyde Jr., all of Mountain City, TN, grandchildren Sydney Souder and Chloe Graybeal. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
