Daniel Boone Potter, age 81, Trade, Wallace Community, died at his home Sunday at 12:05 a.m. following a lengthy illness. Hhe[sic] was a native of Johnson County, a retired farmer and a member of the Baptist Church.

Polly Stout Roark, age 86 of Shouns (Balding Gap Road) died in Cannon Memorial Hospital at Banner Elk, N.C. Wednesday at 2:20 p.m. after a short illness. A native of Johnson County, she was the widow of the late Stacy Roark and daughter of the late late[sic] Daniel and Mary Arnold Stout. She was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Curckers Roark and Ferd Roark, both of Shouns; two daughters, Mrs. Leller Lewis and Miss Carrie Roark, both of Shouns; one brother, George Stout, Mt. Nebo, W.Va.; two sisters, Rachel Stout, Shouns and Mrs. Gertie Osborne, Dear[sic] Lodge, Tenn.; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted from Antioch Baptist Church Saturday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Clyde Cornett and Rev. Blaine Eggers officiating. Burial was in Arnold Cemetery.

MURDER, SUICIDE IS BELIEVED CAUSE OF TWO SHOUNS DEATHS
An inquest to be conducted by Coroner William D. Hill in the deaths of a Johnson County man and his wife has been reset for Monday, March 18, after having originally been set for last Saturday.
Cause of the delay was given by Sheriff Dayton Payne as an effort to "ease the burden" on the two young daughters who were in bed in the house at the time of the shooting.
Dead, are Dan Potter, 61, and his wife, Altha Lee Potter, 35, of Rte 2, Shouns.
The sheriff stated that Potter died en route to a hospital at about 6:00 a.m. on Friday, March 15, after sustaining a .32 caliber pistol head wound at his home, still grasping the pistol which Payne said was the death weapon.
Mrs. Potter was dead, also of a head wound, when officers arrived.
Both shots were apparently from the same gun, officers said.
A cousin of the dead man, Ray Potter, who called officers at the time of the shooting, is being held for "investigation".
Sheriff Payne states that the double death "appears to have been a murder-suicide, although some details need more clarification".
It is thought that complete testimony by the two daughters and the cousin will make possible a clear picture of events leading up to the shooting
Potter, a veteran of World War I, was a life-long resident of Johnson County and a member of the Baptist church. He is survived by two sons, Bruce Potter of Kennett Square, Pa., and Wilton Potter of Salisbury, N. C.; a daughter by a former marriage, Mrs. Bernice Reece of Trade; four brothers, Grant of Galipolis, Ohio, Dave of Zionville, N. C., Clyde and Charles of Trade; four sisters, Mrs. Mollie Reece of Zionville, Mrs. Lizzie Dowell of Shouns, Mrs. Alice Tester of Neva, and Mrs. Hollie Rushton of Pennsylvania.
Mrs. Potter was a native of North Carolina but had lived in Johnson County for the past 23 years. She was a member of the Baptist church.
Survivors, in addition to her two daughters, are four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Brewer of Mountain City, Mrs. Mae Tester of Shouns, Mrs. Faye Vanover of Toughkenamon, Pa., and Mrs. Marie Potter of Trade.
Funeral services for Mr. and Mrs. Dan Potter were held Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church with Rev. W. N. Riddle officiating.
Burial was in the Potter Cemetery at Trade.

Ruby Grindstaff , age 92, of 919 Medical Park Drive, formerly from Butler, passed away Thursday, July 5, 2012, after an extended illness. She was born December 4, 1919, to the late James and Myrtle Potter Brewer. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dana Grindstaff and by two brothers, Claude and Bill Brewer. Ruby was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She enjoyed farming, raising cattle, and gardening.
Survivors include nieces and nephews, Claude Brewer Jr., Geraldine Gentry, and James Brewer all of Butler, TN, Leola Watson of Carryville, TN; and one sister-in-law, Hartensia Brewer of Butler, also special friend, Richard Hagler of Mountain City.
Funeral services for Mrs. Ruby Grindstaff were conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, July 8, 2012, from the Eastside Memory Chapel of the Hux Lipford Funeral Home, with Reverend Leonard Fletcher officiating. Graveside service and burial followed in the Sunset Memorial Park. Family received friends from 1:00 to 2:00 pm prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers were Benny Stout, Dean Campbell, Tommy Poore, Richard Hagler, Blaine Branch, Charlie Mann, and Coty Brewer. At other times the family will receive friends at 725 Little Dry Run Rd. in Butler.

Claude was born September 11, 1924 in Johnson County to the late James and Myrtle Potter Brewer. He enjoyed hunting and farming. Claude was of the Baptist Faith.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Bill Brewer.

She was born January 30, 1921, in Johnson County, Tennessee, to the late Roscoe and Alice Potter Perkins.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband, McDonald Slemp; sisters: Blanche Stout, Cleo Colson and Doris Hughes; brothers: Hartley Potter, Earl Perkins and Shelton Perkins; and a son-in-law, Jim Rupard.
She was employed at Burlington Industries for many years.
Ruby enjoyed reading her Bible. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren and when she was able, Ruby loved to be outside working in her flower gardens.

Mrs. Main was born on March 18, 1924, in Johnson County to the late Thomas and Polly Smith Stout. She liked to work in her garden and attended Hammons Chapel Christian Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ulysses Main; two daughters, Mary Ella Main and Mary Elizabeth Main; six sisters, Pearl Howard, Thelma Potter, Atrie Potter, Evia Winters, Mina Stout and Mary Stout; and four brothers, Roy Stout, Will Stout, John Stout and Bob Edward Stout.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Massey, of Oxford, PA, and Helen Reid and husband, Tom, of Mountain City; two sons, Edward Main and wife, Brenda, of Mountain City, and Paul Main and wife, Dawn, of West Grove, PA; nine grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 18, 2007, at Mountain City Funeral Home with the service to follow at 11:00 a.m. with Mike Smith, Minister, officiating. BUTLER — Chester "Tilley" Stout, 89, Butler, passed away Monday March 26, 2012, in the Johnson City Medical Center.

A native of Johnson County, he was a son of the late George and Elsie Nave Stout. He was a World War II Navy Veteran.

Mr. Stout graduated from East Tennessee State College and pursued predoctural studies at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He began his career in 1952 as an educator at Doe Elementary School, Mountain City, where he served as teacher and principal and basketball coach.

He furthered his career, beginning in 1962, as a college instructor in the Earth Science Department at East Tennessee State University, providing 38 years of service until his retirement in 2000.

He was an avid gardener.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Grace Rainbolt Hilton Stout, January 28, 2000.

He attended Little Doe Baptist Church.

Survivors include three children: Gary Hilton, Butler, and Hilda Stout Dugger, of the home, and Mona Stout, Johnson City; Two Grandchildren: Tori Stout, Johnson City, and Eric Stout and his wife, Veronica, of Elizabethton.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, with Mr. Dennis Hamm officiating.

Interment will follow in Monte Vista Memorial Park, Johnson City. Military Honors and Pallbearers will be provided by the Carter County Honor Guard. She married James "Hugh" Andrews in 1949 who was the love of her life and preceded her in death in 1986. She is survived by a brother, Boyd Potter of Delaware, her children, Naomi Henderson of Orlando, Florida, Leona Woodring, (Butch) of Chuckey, TN, Lois Carty and Alan Andrews of Elizabethton, TN, her beloved grandchildren, Thomas Geisler, Bo and Kyndall Henderson, Jeff Guinn, Justin Adams, Megan Renfro, and Kristina, Sadie and Ben Andrews. She had four great grandchildren, Nicholas and Eliana Guinn and Bracken and Addison Renfro. Her grandchildren were the absolute joy of her life and they all loved spending time with her. She is also survived by her dear friend, Billie Powell of Elizabethton.

Irene was a member of East Side Baptist Church where she especially loved and enjoyed her Sunday School Class. She was a friend to everyone, and she never met a stranger. She had a way of always making everyone feel extra special. Irene loved the outdoors which was obvious by her beautiful flowers and immaculate yard which she loved to work in.

She will be laid to rest at Dyson Grove Cemetery where a memorial service will be held at a later date.

Nellie was born on July 21, 1931 in Mountain City, Tennessee to the late Enoch Franklin “Frank” Potter and Minnie Brewer Potter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, Robert J. Stanton on March 10, 2013; her sisters, Bonnie (Robert) Ward, Verdie (Carl) Stanton and Maude (Leon) Ward; her brothers, Don (Pearl) Potter and J.C. Potter; her sister-in-law, Edna Potter; and a brother-in-law, James Andrews.

Nellie accepted Christ as her Saviour at 12 years of age at Dyson Grove Baptist Church in Butler, Tennessee. After her marriage to Robert J. Stanton, she joined West View Baptist Church in Rogersville, Tennessee, which was her loving church family. Nellie had worked as a manager of a laundromat and will be very missed by all that knew her.

Those left to cherish Nellie’s many wonderful memories include two sons, Dr. Tom Stanton and his wife, Pat, Morristown; Tim Stanton and his wife Kim, Raleigh, NC; a sister, Irene Andrews, of Elizabethton; a brother, John B. Joyce Magdalene Potter Johnson was called home on Saturday, September 4, 2021 at her home with her dear niece Michelle Treadway by her side. Joyce was born December 2, 1941 in Creston, NC to the late Mason Lee Potter and Cazzie Crenice Roark Potter. Joyce attended Baptist Home Church and Corinth Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years James Johnson; her sisters Deanna Potter Johnson and Sue Potter Treadway; brothers-in-law Jimmy Calvin Graybeal, Clifford Treadway and Robert Johnson. Also she was preceded in death by her family-in-law Margaret Glenn, Lois Lipford, Cecil Johnson and John Johnson. She worked for and retired from Hanes after 30 plus years. Prior to that she worked for Kennit Canning and Jennersville rose gardens. Joyce also worked on newspapers and enjoyed yard sales, flea markets and gardening.

Survivors include: niece and caregiver Michelle Lynn Treadway; sister Marilyn Potter Graybeal; nieces Terri Graybeal, Tarriana Osborne and Deloris Taylor; nephews Greg Graybeal, Michael Potter, Shane Blevins, Bobby Carpenter, Tony Johnson, Ricky Osborne and Chad Blevins; sister-in-law Mae Johnson. Several other nieces and nephews and special friend Betty Ann Davis also survive.

A graveside service was held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2021 in Johnson Potter Cemetery with Rev. Billy Morefield officiating. Hurbbie James Potter, age 77, of Mountain City, TN passed away on Friday, December 13, 2019 at his home. He was born August 30, 1942 to the late Madison and Ruby Potter. Hurbbie is also preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Potter, January 24, 2018, daughter, Gina Potter and brother, Gerald Potter.

Hurbbie's favorite hobbies included trading and collecting all kinds of different things. He loved to go arrowhead hunting and being a tool and die maker.

Mabel Bernice Potter Reece went to her heavenly home on Tuesday, August 16, 2022. She was born on November 1, 1930, to the late Iva Lee Miller Potter and Daniel Marvin Potter of Trade. She was preceded in death by the love of her life and spouse of sixty years, Chester Albert Reece. They were lifelong residents of Trade and spent their lives in service to their community.

Bernice is survived by two children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. Son and daughter-in-law: Mike and Karol Reece of Ft. Worth, Texas, grandchildren Susan Reece of Jacksonville, Florida, Grant Reece and Alex Reece also of Ft. Worth.

Son and daughter-in-law: Greg and Lisa Reece of Trade, grandchildren Allyson Reece Felty (Anthony Felty) with great-grandson Avery Felty of Maryville, TN, Abigail Reece Wilson (Samuele Wilson) of West Jefferson, NC, and Anna Reece Wallace (Bryce Wallace) of Shady Valley.

She was preceded in death by brothers Wilton Potter, Bruce Potter, and Luther Martin.

She is survived by her sisters, Helen Pardue Hammons and Louise Pardue. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Bernice’s life was typified by her love for her family above all else and a deep love of her community. She had a deep desire to serve those in Johnson County and throughout the state through her community involvement.

She was a lifelong member of Evergreen Baptist Church, where she played the piano for many years, sharing her love of music and her Savior.

Her community involvement ranged from her long-time work with the Levi Strauss Retirees raising money for many local charities and organizations. She served many years with the Johnson County Rescue Squad Crewettes and the Women’s Auxiliary to Tennessee Association of Rescue Squads serving at the state level as President and was named Crewette of the Year for Tennessee. She was a long-time member of the Board of Johnson County Farm Bureau and represented Tennessee at the Rural and Farm Women of the World Conference in Stuttgart, Germany, in 1981. She served many years with Eastern Star, mentoring young women through Rainbow Girls. She was a tireless worker and contributor to Trade Days. She was on the Board of Directors of the Johnson County Hospital. There are doubtless many other activities, charities, and causes that she contributed to through the years that are not listed here. She served her friends, family, and community in countless other acts of generosity and compassion over the years.

There will be no formal visitation.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Friday, August 19, 2022, at Mountain City Funeral Home with Pastor Derrick Wilson officiating. Music will be under the direction of Tony and Cheri Potter. The entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum. Pallbearers are Alex Reece, Anthony Felty, Samuele Wilson, Bryce Wallace, Doug McFadden, Willie Debord, and Bob Pardue. Wilton was born February 6, 1928 in Johnson County, Tennessee, a son of the late Marvin Daniel Potter and Ivalee Miller Potter. He was a retired superintendent for Beaman Corporation and served in the United States Army. Wilton was a member of Zionville Baptist Church, where he served as superintendent for 10 years and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Wilton is survived by his wife, Sally Faye Wilson Potter of the home; three sisters, Bernice Reece of Trade, Tennessee, Helen Pardue, and Louise Pardue and husband Jimmy, all of Mountain City, Tennessee; one brother, Luther Martin of Beckley, West Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Georgia Pardue and husband Edgar of Zionville, and Irene Potter of Trade, and one brother-in-law, Clay Wilson of Zionville. He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherry Potter; one brother, Bruce Potter; one step-granddaughter, Arwen Burns, and one sister-in-law, Lola Martin.

Funeral services for Wilton F. Potter will be conducted Tuesday afternoon, October 24, 2017, at 2:00 o'clock, at Zionville Baptist Church. The body will lie in state, from 12:00 until 2:00 o'clock. Officiating will be Reverend Dwayne Tester, Military graveside rites and burial, provided by American Legion Post 130 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, will follow in the Reece Cemetery.

The family will receive friends Tuesday afternoon, from 12:00 until 2:00 o'clock, at the church, prior to the service.

HAMPTON - Von Austin Fritts, 79, Hampton passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical after a brief illness.

A native of Butler, he was a son of the late Robert Lee & Donnie Elkins Fritts. Von was a retired employee of Nor-Well Company. He loved fishing and "Loafing" with his buddies.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Elsie Simerly Fritts. Two Children: James "Jim" Fritts & Wife Donna, Elizabethton and Reba Shreve & husband Gregory, Matthews, North Carolina. A Service to celebrate the life of Von Fritts will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terry Richardson officiating. Billy Gene "Buddy" Slemp, Sr., of Lexington, NC passed away on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. He was born on October 1, 1939 to the late McDonald Slemp and Ruby Perkins Slemp. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Cole Slemp, and a sister, Linda Rupard.

Buddy was a sweet and loving man. He retired as a truck driver after driving for 47 years.

Patsy "Tine" Eggers passed away on Saturday November 17, 2018 at her residence. She was born On January 8th, 1942, in Shouns, TN to the late Garfield Trivette and Vira Martin Trivette. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by brothers and sisters, Ottis Trivette, Clay Trivette, Verdie Mae Stout, Eula Faye Courtner, Bob Trivette, Dean Trivette, Arlis Trivette, and her best friend Maxine King.

Tine worked for many years at the Mountain City Glove Plant. When she wasn't working, she loved working in her flower garden. She was a member of the Rainbow Mennonite Church. Ted Trivett, age 94, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at the Watauga Medical Center. He was born on March 2, 1923 to the late Clyde James Trivett and Sally Ethel Martin Trivett. In addition to his parents, Ted was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Juanita Marie Walsh Trivett; sisters: Wilma Trivett Walsh and Margie Trivett Taylor and brother, Johnie Glenn Trivette; brothers-in-law: Wade Taylor, Dana Walsh, Luther Rupard and Sam Taylor.

Ted owned and operated his own sawmill for many years. He loved being outdoors and had a special love for sawmill work. He was an avid coon hunter. He studied forestry and fire- fighting techniques with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He was a great story teller and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Irene Taylor, age 93 of 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, Tennessee, surrounded by his family, passed away on Thursday January 24, 2019 in the Mountain City Care Center. Irene was born in Mountain City, TN, on August 3, 1925 to Clyde Trivette and Sally Martin Trivette and is also is preceded in death by her husband of 68 years Sam E. Irene was a charter member of the Calvary Baptist Church, she loved flower gardening digging herbs and just the outdoors in general.

James Elbert Johnson, age 76, of Creston, NC, passed away in his home on Saturday, October 13, 2018. James was born December 1, 1941 to the late Booker T. and Lura May Johnson. In addition to his parents, James was preceded in death by his sisters Lois Lipford and Margaret Glen, brothers Cecil Johnson, Robert Johnson, and his twin brother John Johnson, sister-in-law Deanna Potter Johnson, brothers-in-law Otis Forrester and Ralph Lipford, a niece Tammie Graybeal, nephews Allen Lipford and Adam Taylor, and his brother-in-law Clifford Treadway, who held a special place in his heart.

James lived and farmed in Creston, NC for all his adult life, making a living as a tobacco and cattle farmer. When James was not working the farm, he enjoyed collecting knives and guns and fishing for trout in the cool mountain streams of North Carolina. James attended Corinth Baptist Church in Mountain City for many years.

Margie Lewis Greer, age 76, of 644 Roan Creek Road, passed away January 29, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. She was born January 14, 1942 in Johnson County, TN.

Margie was the daughter of the late Denver & Leller Roark Lewis. In addition, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Brown, and two brothers; Thurman Lewis & Donnelly Lewis.

She loved spending time with her Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening & working in her flowers. She was a homemaker and formerly worked at Levis and Leco.

Margie is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bill Greer. Her children; Cledith Greer of the home, Teresa & husband Mike Parlier of Deep Gap, Sandy Billings & husband Tim of Butler, John Greer & wife Denise also of Butler. Sister; Josephine Wallace of Mountain City, and a Brother, Vonnelly Lewis & wife Ann of Mountain City.

He was born October 23, 1956, to the late Claude Brown and Betty Flannagan Brown. Jackie was a member of Victory Chapel Cowboy Church and he loved working puzzles, fishing, and wrestling. Steve Eggers age 55, Of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Monday March 9th, 2020 at his residence. Steve was born on July 21, 1964 in Boone, N.C. to the late Lloyd Eggers and Patsy Trivette Eggers.
He was a construction worker.
He loved riding motorcycles, gardening and arrowhead hunting.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Arnold Eggers of the home; son, Derek Eggers, Mountain City, Tennessee; brothers, Jimmy Eggers, Mountain City, Tennessee and Timmy Eggers, Mountain City, Tennessee. His beloved dogs Harley Girl and Spikey Baby.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Robert “Bob” Vaught Stout, age 66, who passed away suddenly on Saturday, September 18, 2021. He was the son of the late Grady Vaught Stout and Ruby Faye McCulloch of Mountain City, TN. He was born on April 1, 1955. He was also preceded in death by his brother: Douglas Stout, and maternal grandparents Roby and Hassie Woodard.

Bob loved playing music, especially with his Nephew Grady and the Sandy Mountain Boys. He loved riding his Harley’s and he was the owner of Thunder Mountain Motorcross, he loved operating heavy equipment and there was not a single piece of equipment he didn’t excel on. Bob loved playing football and basketball in his younger years and watching it in his later years.

Bob was the owner of Bob Stout Construction, which he took much pride in, since 1986.
