JOHNSON CITY - Ruth Evelyn Calhoun McCue, age 96 of Johnson City, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at her home.

She was a daughter of the late Harvey and Lizzie Gouge Calhoun, born to them on September 27, 1922 in Cranberry, North Carolina. She was a former member of the Grace Baptist Church, a current member at the Heritage Baptist Church, and was privileged to be in Gary Stocton's Sunday school class with many special people.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband John McCue and her first husband, Ernest C. Lowe. She is also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Colleen Lowe.

Those left behind to cherish her memory are her son, Michael Lowe; Step-Son, Michael McCue (Michelle); Grandchildren: Matt and Megan McCue; Sister, Mary Sexton, and several nieces, nephews and special friends.

Funeral services for Ms. Ruth E. McCue will be conducted on Monday, July 8, 2019 at 1:00 P.M. in the Sunrise Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Services of Johnson City with Dr. Allen Davis and Dr. Reggie Weems officiating. Burial will follow at the Monte Vista Memorial Park at 2:30 P.M. with family members and friends serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Don Walters and Gary Stocton.

Gertrude Elizabeth Calhoun, 91, of Midway passed away Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2005.

Born Aug. 10, 1914, she was the daughter of the late G.S. and Rosa Ann Franklin.

Mrs. Calhoun was a homemaker and a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church for 43 years.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. F.C. Calhoun; brothers, James D., Clarence, Russell, Don and Robert Franklin; sisters, Mary Calhoun and May Oakes; and her son-in-law, James P. Hunter.

Those left to cherish her loving memory include sons and their wives, the Rev. Bill and Joyce Calhoun of Crab Orchard and Harold Dean and Sandra Kay Calhoun of Lexington, Ky.; daughters and their husbands, Rose Marie Hunter of Charleston, Reba Jane and Jimmy Beckett of Crab Orchard and Drema and Don Slaughter of Lakeland, Fla.; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Hazel Lewis of Gastonia, N.C., and Pauline Calhoun of High Point, N.C.

She was preceded in death by her Parents; Husband: Virgil Lewis; five Brothers and four Sisters.

Hazel was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. She was great all around. She was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed gardening and cooking. She also enjoyed listening to gospel music.

The family will receive friends beginning at 5 p.m. on Tuesday up until the service hour at 6 p.m. at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home.

Interment will be in the Fork Mountain Cemetery at 11 a.m. on Wednesday Feb. 27, 2019.

Joe Allen Hicks, 86, of Newland, North Carolina passed away on Friday, February 18, 2022 at the Watauga Medical Center in Boone, NC.
Joe was born on October 9, 1935 in Avery County, North Carolina, a son of the late Phelix Theodore Hicks and the late Ethel Calhoun Hicks.
Joe graduated Cranberry High School in 1955 and then attended Gaston College, taking mechanics. He retired from Baxter Health Care after a long career. He was a Deacon and member of the Lewis Chapel and enjoyed fishing, hunting and tinkering.
He was preceded in death by his father, Phelix Theodore Hicks; mother, Ethel Hicks; brother, Bill Hicks; and granddaughter, Amy Randolph.

Katheryn Victoria Pritchard, 81, of Avery County, went Home to be with the Lord on Friday, Jan. 13, 2022 at The Greens in Spruce Pine.

A native of Avery County, she was the daughter of the late Ike and Melba Calhoun Erwin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Pritchard, Sr., who passed away July 4, 1998; son, Danny Pritchard; and brother, Buddy Erwin.

Katheryn attended Big Meadows Missionary Baptist Church for numerous years. She loved going to the beach, cooking, and especially working in her yard.

Left to cherish her memories is her son, Lee Pritchard and wife, Jackie of Old Fort, and special best friend, Jenny Hughes of Roaring Creek. Several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends also survive.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Ryan Bennett will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Pallbearers will be Brian Watson, Tony Jones, Glenn Aldridge, Greg Johnson and Peck Taylor.

Allen was born on April 9, 1943 in Avery County, NC, a son of the late Steward General Oaks and the late Nola Calhoun Oaks.

Allen was member of the New Destiny Church in Kingsport, TN. He was the Owner of Oaks Construction for almost 50 years, with locations in Ohio and North Carolina. He enjoyed bowling and singing. He was known for doing Elvis shows.

He was preceded in death by his father, Steward General Oaks; mother, Nola Oaks; sister, Gwinda Maracz.

Allen leaves behind to cherish his memory, wife of 55 years, Mary Gorman Oaks of the home; son, Allen (Deonna) Oaks of Gate City, Va.; grandson, Dakota Oaks; six granddaughters, Caraline Oaks, Lily Oaks, Emily Kendrick, Georgia Kendrick, Bethany Kendrick, and Madison Kendrick.

Services for Allen Oaks was held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 23, in the Grandfather Chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rita Pritchard officiating. The family received friends from 2 p.m. until the service hour Friday at the funeral home. Interment was in the Fork Mountain Cemetery.
