JOHN ROSWELL GRYDER
John Roswell Gryder, 92, died at his home, Route 2, Butler, Saturday at 9:00 a.m. after a short illness. He was a member of the Lower Elk Baptist Church.
He is survived by two sons, Tiltel Gryder of Avery County and Arlie Gryder of Butler; two daughters, Mrs. A. E. Green, of Heaton, North Carolina and Mrs. W. E. Sheffield of Vilas, North Carolina; and one sister, Mrs. Venie Barnett of Hiddenite, North Carolina.
Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. from the Lower Elk Baptist Church with the Rev. Joe Potter and the Rev. Tommy Stansberry officiating. Burial will be in the Whitehead Cemetery.

Well Known Citizen of the City Succumbs to Long Illness--Funeral Services to Be Conducted This Afternoon.

Mr. J. L. Gryder died yesterday afternoon at 6:30 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. D. W. Byerly, after an illness extending over several months. The funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at 4:30 o'clock by Rev. Dr. H. H. Hulten, pastor of the First Baptist church, at the residence of Mrs. Byerly.

The deceased had been suffering with a throat affection for some time, having undergone an operation about six months ago. He apparently regained himself as a result of this operation, but a month ago the trouble returned in an aggravated form and his condition has been desperate since.

Mr. Gryder came to Charlotte 22 years ago and was well-known in the city. For a good part of this time he was engaged in the furniture business.

The deceased is survived by a wife, mother, two sisters, Mrs. Rebecca Davis and Mrs. Martha Barnett of Taylorsville; two daughters, Mrs. D. W. Byerly and Miss Miram Gryder of this city, and two brothers, Messrs. W. W. Gryder of Taylorsville and J. R. Gryder of Dark Ridge, N. C.

Miss Londa Gryder, the 19-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gryder, died yesterday morning at 7:15 o'clock at the home of her parents on East Seventh street. She had been ill with fever for several weeks.

The death of this young lady is peculiarly sad. She was liked and admired by all who knew her, and her life had promised much in usefulness and happiness. Miss Gryder was graduated from the State Normal College in Greensboro, and while at college made many friends. She was generally known here as a lovable young woman of fine traits of character. Miss Gryder was a niece of Postmaster J. W. Mullen, of this city.

The funeral services will take place at Tryon Street Baptist church this afternoon at 3 o'clock and will be conducted by Rev. Dr. A. C. Barron. The pall-bearers will be Messrs. L. A. Turner, Ed Redfern, D. A. Tedder, Moody Usher, Clarence Reid and R. W. Sossamon.

Miss Texie Edith Gryder Becomes the Wife of Mr. Daniel Wriston Myerly--The Wedding Ceremony.

At 8:30 o'clock last evening Miss Texie Edith Gryder, the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Gryder, and Mr. Daniel Wriston Byerly were married. The vows were solemnized at the home of the bride, on East Seventh street, Rev. C. T. Willingham, the acting pastor of the First Baptist church, officiating.

The home was prettily and artistically decorated for the occasion in a profusion of palms and ferns and seasonable plants. In the parlor, where the vows were taken, was arranged a huge bank of palms and ivy. Above this was suspended a wedding bell and under this the couple stood during the ceremony.

Just at the time appointed, Miss Annie Young began the sweet strains of Lohengrin's wedding march on the piano and the couple came down the stairs together, there being no attendants. The bride looked charming in a gown of white batiste, embroidered by hand, and carrying a boquet of bride roses and maiden hair ferns.

A large number of friends of the popular young couple were gathered in the home to witness the event.

After the ceremony Mr. and Mrs. Byerly went to the home of Mrs. C. C. Kennedy, on North Church street, where they will live until the spring, when they will build a residence.

The bride of last night is an attractive young woman and lovable. Mr. Byerly is a well-known young business man of the city, being a member of the firm of Davis & Byerly, who conduct grocery stores on Tryon and College streets. Both Mr. and Mrs. Byerly have large numbers of friends.

Maude Gryder, of the Elk River community of Carter County, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 31, 2012.

Maude was a homemaker and worked as an employee of the Shadowline Corporation in Boone until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the Elk River Baptist Church and served for many years as its treasurer and adult women's Sunday School teacher. In recent years, Maude experienced declining health and had to give up these cherished activities.

Maude was preceded in death by her parents, Bertha Arnold Gryder and Arlie Gryder; two brothers, Dan Gryder and John R. Gryder.

Survivors include her brother, Paul Gryder, of the Fish Springs community of Hampton, TN; and a sister, Ida Lou Campbell of the Elk River community. Maude is also survived by 8 nieces and 5 nephews.

Funeral services will be held at the Elk River Baptist Church on Monday, September 3, at 2:00 PM with Rev. Mike Taylor and Rev. Charles Cable officiating.

Internment will follow in the Whitehead Cemetery.

Ida Lou Campbell. Age 79, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord Saturday June 22, 2013, at her residence.
A native of Carter County, she was the daughter of the late Arlie and Bertha Arnold Gryder. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Howard Campbell, of fifty-nine years who passed away May 31, 2013; one grandson, Richie Lee Burchett; two brothers, Dan and John Russell Gryder; and one sister, Maude Gryder.
Ida was a member of Elk River Baptist Church.
She was a homemaker and loved her garden, cooking and her family. She loved all her children and grandchildren. Ida and Howard helped raise three grandchildren that were very special, Joseph Trivette, Zachary Buckles and Allie Pearson.
Survivors include three sons, Michael Gryder, Raleigh, NC, Melvin Campbell, Morganton, NC, and Gary Campbell, Butler, TN; three daughters, Alesia Lorentz, Johnson City, TN, Teresa Trivett and Shelia Trivette, both of Butler, TN; one brother Paul Gryder, Butler, TN; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren; and two special friends, Thelma Stanton and Barbara Gilbert.
The funeral service for Mrs. Campbell will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 25, 2013, in the Riverside Chapel of Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton, with Rev. Mike Taylor, Rev. Charles Cable and Rev. Nick Bradshaw officiating. Music will be under the direction of the Thankful Hearts and Melinda Shelton.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m. prior to the service in the Riverside Chapel and anytime at the residence.
The graveside service and interment will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, in the Campbell Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Joe Trivett, Ricky Burchett, Michael Gilbert, Andrew Campbell, Jamie Campbell, Phil Lorentz, Ronnie Trivett, Bobby Trivette, Leonard Gilbert, Jerry Ludrosky, and Doug Hatley. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday to go in procession to the cemetery.
A special thanks to Amedisys Hospice for their loving care and support given to Mrs. Campbell and her family.

Albert Dean Gryder, age 79, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, November 7, 2021 at Watauga Medical Center. He was born on June 20, 1942 in Banner Elk, North Carolina to the late James Rufus Gryder and Mary Dotson Gryder.

He worked as an electronic engineer at Grumman AeroSpace. Al loved his country and was proud to have served in the United States Navy. To those who knew him best knows of his humor, telling of jokes and seeing things on the lighter side. Al was an advocate for all animals. He served as Animal Control officer for the Town of Mountain City for approximately 2 years.

Al is survived by his loving wife of 54 years (would have been 55 yrs. on December 11), Joyce Pauline (Pant) Gryder; loving daughter, Annette Sepega and special grand-dog, Willa.

Per Al’s wishes no formal service will be held.
