Laura Ellen Gouge Benfield was born on Feb. 12, 1883, in Carter County, TN where she resided her entire life. She was the daughter of Calvin and Kathryn McKinney Gouge, and was their 5th child. She had 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

On November 18, 1905, she married Marion Brownlow Benfield, in Carter County, TN. Laura and Marion had 3 daughters, 3 sons and 11 grandchildren. She was proceeded in death by her oldest son, Walter Massey Benfield.

Laura died April 1, 1962 in Memorial Hospital in Johnson City, TN, following a lengthy illness. She was 80 years old. At the time of her death she was a member of Burbank Free Will Baptist Church in Roan Mountain.

Her funeral was held at Tetrick Funeral Home in Elizabethton. Following she was buried at Monte Vista Cemetery on Oakland Avenue, in Johnson City, TN. Laura's grave adjoins her husband Marion, son Walter "Walt" and daughter in law.

Howard S. Gouge Sr., 88, Dave Buck Road, Johnson City, died Thursday, April 22, 2004, in the Johnson City Medical Center. A native of Roan Mountain, he was a son of the late Dosser and Minnie Winters Gouge. Mr. Gouge was a retired produce salesman and carpenter. He was
of the Baptist faith. He had served in the U.S. Army and Coast Guard and served in the United States Navy during World War II.

Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Sunday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. D.C. Byrd and the Rev. John Vance officiating.
Graveside service and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday in the Gouge Family Cemetery (Heaton Ridge Road), Roan Mountain. Active pallbearers, who are requested to assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Monday, will be Buddy Davis, Danny Davis, Nathan Gouge, Patrick Gouge, Joshua Gouge and Eugene Gouge.

Honorary pallbearers will be his nieces and nephews.

Emma Tolley Honeycutt, 90, of Browns Branch Road, Hampton, passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2016, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. Emma was born in Carter County on May 3, 1926 to the late Charlie and Celia McKinney Tolley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Honeycutt; two brothers, Will Tolley and Lawton Roberts; three sisters, Cassie Bennett, Maude Byrd and Merle Bennett; and her "Phone Friends," Maude Clark and Albert Simerly.

Emma was a homemaker and a member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church. She loved to garden and take care of her cows, "Pet and Bonnie," and her dog, "Jack."
Those left to cherish her memory include several nieces and nephews as well as her special friends, Captola Hyder and Nannie Miller.

A graveside service to honor the life of Mrs. Emma Tolley Honeycutt will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 17, in the McKinney Cemetery on Browns Branch Road, Hampton, with Rev. Terry Jones officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be Bruce Stevens, Roger Ellison, Roger Stevens, Arnold Willis and Ken Church.

Pauline McKinney Little Hoilman, born June 8, 1923, of Ivy Hall Nursing Home and formerly from Johnson City, Tennessee, went home to meet her Lord on Thursday, April 20, 2023. Mrs. Hoilman was a native of Carter County and was the daughter of the late Merritt and Cinda McKinney.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hoilman was preceded in death by her first husband, C.E. (Gene) Little and her stepson, Paul Hoilman; her daughter, Dr. Penny Little Smith; her son-in-law, Dr. Stephen Smith; her brothers, Ethan, Hoover, and Ben McKinney; and sisters, Virginia Berry, Lena McKinney, Edith Sutton, and Naomi McKinney; sister-ion-law, Kaitlyn (Susie) McKinney; and a stepson, Keith Hoilman.

Mrs. Hoilman is survived by a stepson, Danny Hoilman (Luann), Johnson City, Tennessee; step grandsons, Paul and Scott Hoilman, Johnson City, Tennessee; and step granddaughter, Nikki Adkins and son Mason, Johnson City, Tennessee; a special niece, Pat Burrow (Larry); sisters-in-law, Joann McKinney, Marlene McKinney and Francis Jewett, Elizabethton, Tennessee. Several other nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Hoilman retired from NARC after 20 years of service. After her husband Paul retired, they enjoyed traveling and spending time in Florida.

Mrs. Hoilman was a member of Skyline Heights Baptist Church and also attended Mountain View Baptist Church, Johnson City, Tennessee.

A committal and entombments service to honor the life of Pauline McKinney Little Hoilman will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Washington County Memory Gardens, Mausoleum Chapel of Memories in Johnson City, Tennessee with Pastor Nathan Jennings, officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews, friends, and neighbors of Mrs. Hoilman. Those wishing to attend the committal service are asked to meet at Washington County Memory Gardens at 1:50 PM on Tuesday.

HAMPTON — Luster McKinney Stevens, 91, Hampton passed away on Monday, January 25, 2016, in the Hermitage Health Center.

Born in Carter County to the late Wilson & Bell Hill McKinney. She lived her entire life on Brown's Branch Road.

She was also preceded in death by her husband Conley Jerome Stevens, Sr.; by two grandchildren, Connie Bowers and Melissa Bowers; and three sons-in-law, Terry Hill, Billy Dan Harrell and Randy McKinney; two brothers, Bruce McKinney and Jack McKinney.

Luster was a life time member of Oak Hill Free Will Baptist Church and the oldest member of the church. She loved working in her flowers and visits from her children and grandchildren.

ELIZABETHTON — Eva Hyder Casey, 78, formerly of 100 Daytona Place, Elizabethton, died peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday May 17, 2011, at Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness.

She was a native of Carter County and the youngest of eleven children born to Nat & Ethel Woodby Hyder. Mrs. Casey was a 1951 graduate of Hampton High School and loved to keep in touch with her classmates.

She had lived in Michigan for a number of years. She retired in 1992 from the Michigan School System where she worked in the cafeteria. She was a member of the Oak Street Baptist Church.

Mrs. Casey enjoyed going out to eat with friends, listening to live music and laughing with her many friends at the Elizabethton Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed life and always had a smile for everyone.

Mrs. Casey was preceded in death by her husband, John Paul Casey, Sept. 1999; four brothers, Don Hyder, Sept. 1997, Carl Hyder, April 1998, Nathan Hyder, October 2002, and Leonard Hyder, Nov. 2004; one sister, Vernie Stevens, Oct. 2004; a sister-in-law, Violet Casey Price, June 2004; and five infant brothers and sisters.

Survivors include a son, Paul Casey, of Watauga; a special niece, Lenora Hyder Wiseman and her husband, Buddy, of Hampton; a special nephew, Richard Hyder and his wife, Carol Ann, of Elizabethton; a sister-in-law: Vergie Hyder, of Adrian, Michigan; Her caregivers: Barbara Fox, Patti Nave, Sandra Hardin, of Elizabethton, and Ashley Townson, of Roan Mountain; Also several other nieces & nephews.

Funeral Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Wednesday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Hendrich officiating.

Graveside Service and Interment will be at 12 Noon Thursday in Happy Valley Memorial Park with Mr. Will Andrews officiating. Active Pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will be all the caregivers that gave such loving care to Eva during her illness, special friends: Becky Yates Proffitt and Carter County Bank, Hampton High School 1951 classmates and her church family at Oak Street Baptist Church.

JOHNSON CITY - Norma Gouge Blalock, 90, Johnson City, passed away October 15, 2018 in the NHC Healthcare, Johnson City following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Homer & Dovie Street Gouge. Norma was a 1947 graduate of Happy Valley High School. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Donald Blalock who passed away April 21, 1996, by a brother: Donald Gouge and two sisters: Edna Massey and Shirley Swink. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children: Donna (Kevin) Huckaba and Steven (Penny) Blalock all of Johnson City. Three Grandchildren: Lori Ann Huckaba (Terry) Hamilton, Jonathan (Amy) Huckaba and Mary (Kyle) Imes. Four Great Grandchildren: Samuel Hamilton, Noah Hamilton, Jacob Imes and Charlotte Imes. ELIZABETHTON - Jewell D. Carver Canter, age 74, of Elizabethton, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, November 3, 2018 from the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

Jewell was born in Elizabethton to the late John and Frances McKinney Carver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Jewell was a loving wife, mother and sister and was a member of East Fairview Freewill Baptist Church. She enjoyed watching NASCAR races and was an avid Tony Stewart fan. She also enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves.
