F. C. Gentry, age 88, retired farmer, died at his home Johnson City, RFD 5, early Saturday night after several months' illness.
Funeral services were conducted from the Dewey Christian church in Doe Valley this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will be in the Wilson cemetery, Johnson county.
Survivors are his wife, Mrs. Bertha Gentry; five sons, Elbert, Mountain City, Clayton, Isham and Curtis Gentry, of Johnson City, and Webster of Peoria, Ill.; two daughters, Mrs. Victoria Harper, and Mrs. Charles Morefield, both of Mountain City; two stepsons, Jessie Gentry, Johnson City, and James Gentry, of Elizabethton.
Pallbearers and flower-bearers will be selected from friends attending the funeral.
The body was removed from North Funeral Home to the family residence Sunday afternoon.

Funeral services for Noah Gentry, 42, who died Monday at 4 p.m. at a local hospital following an intestinal operation Thursday night, were to have been held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Free Will Baptist Church, the Rev. James Fair and the Rev. R. N. Own, officiating. Interment was to be in the Highland Cemetery.
Pallbearers were J. Hampton Hyder, John Bowers, Walter Love, E. E. Hyder, Jake Brumit, and Walter Edens.
Survivors are the widow; four[sic] daughters, Bessie, Cora, Ella, Lucille and Ruby Gentry; two sons, Ernest and Frank Gentry; father, F. C. Gentry of Butler, and four brothers, Elbert, Isen, Webster, and Clayton Gentry, all of Butler.
Mr. Gentry had made his home here for several years having come from Johnson County and for some time managed the County Home.

SHADY VALLEY — Osie Shepherd, age 99, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, February 6, 2011 at Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center in Mountain City, Tennessee.

She was a life long resident of Shady Valley, Tennessee and was the daughter of the late James and Altha Gentry. She was a member of Crandull Church of Christ for over 70 years and was a member of the Shady Valley Senior Citizens Center and Home Demonstration Club in Shady Valley, Tennessee. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Wiley Shepherd; two sons, Alton Shepherd and Gerald Shepherd; two sons-in-law, Opie Long and Lee Perry; two grandsons, three brothers, and two sisters.

She is survived by one son, Lonnie Shepherd and his wife, Trula, of Mountain City, Tennessee; three daughters, Wanda Long of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Velma Perry of Lake City, Florida, and Colleen McCarthy and her husband, Ed, of Reading, California; a daughter-in-law, Helen Shepherd of Shady Valley, Tennessee; several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in the Riverview Chapel at Garrett Funeral Home in Damascus, Virginia with Mr. Jim Hutchinson, minister officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus, Virginia. Pallbearers will be selected from the grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to the Shady Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Shady Valley, TN 37688.

Therman Carroll Gentry, age 97 of the Cold Springs Community in Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Friday May 4th, 2018 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, VA. He was born July 30th, 1920 in the Johnson County to the late Joseph A. Gentry and Ella Smith Gentry. In addition to his parents he was predeceased in death by: a sister, Mina Gentry, and brothers: Selmar, Wade, Emory, Gaither, and Richard Dale.

He was a 50 year Mastor Mason of Taylorsville Masonic Lodge #243 F&AM.

He enjoyed playing old time music, working crossword puzzles, and spending spending time with his cattle and dogs.

Therman worked for 20 years as a foreman for T.V.A, he also had many years as a long distance truck driver.

Those left to cherish Therman's memory include, his wife, Evelyn Johnson Gentry, daughters: Carolyn Davis and husband, Jim of Rose Hill, Virginia, and Becky Gentry of Mountain City.

Sons: Ted and wife Janie Gentry of Mountain City, and Scott Gentry of Mountain City, TN. Six Grand – children and Nine Great-Grandchildren.

She was the wife of the late Robert E. Foster, who passed away in 2008 and with whom she shared 34 years of marriage. Her first husband of 34 years, Wallace "Sax" McLaughlin, Sr., passed away in 1972.

Born in Mountain City, TN, she was the daughter of the late Elbert and Mary Harper Gentry.

Frances was a Certified Nurses Aide at Pocopson Home, West Chester, PA , for 30 years, retiring in 1972.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, Kennett Square, PA, St. Patrick's Ladies Auxiliary, American Legion, Cecil Post 15, Ladies Auxiliary, Elkton, MD, the Ware Presbyterian Auxiliary and the Kennett Area senior Center.

Frances enjoyed travelling, games, including Bingo, collecting antiques and she was a collector of Elvis Presley memorabilia.

She is survived by one son, Thomas E. McLaughlin and his wife Joan of Ocean City, MD, a daughter-in-law, Bernadette Sharayko of Collingsville, PA, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nephews and countless friends.

Frances was predeceased by three sons, Wallace P. McLaughlin, Jr., Dennis P. McLaughlin and Robert M. McLaughlin; two brothers, Earl Gentry and Eugene Gentry; two sisters, Hazel McKinney and Elsie McKinney.

Newport News, Va., September 12- XXXX XXXXXXXX, 22, of Hornsbyville, York County, has been released on $2500 bond pending preliminary hearing on manslaughter charges in connection with the fatal shooting of Miss Ruby Gentry last night, according to York County Sheriff A.S. White. Preliminary hearing will be Wednesday in the county trial justice court at Yorktown.
The girl, a resident of Elizabethtown (sp), Tenn., died last night in a Newport News hospital of a rifle bullet wound.
White said investigation disclosed that XXXXXXXX was awakened by the barking of his dog last night and went out in the yard with his rifle. He fired one shot in the air and another into the shrubbery, the second bullet striking the Gentry girl.
Miss Gentry and Miss Odien Norris, a sister of Mrs. XXXXXXXX had been visiting the XXXXXXXXX and had left Saturday, presumably to return to their homes in Tennessee, White said. Instead they remained at Newport News, White said, and returned to the XXXXXXXXX home. They remained outside the house waiting for XXXXXXXX to go to sleep before they entered, the sheriff reported.
The other girl is being held as a material witness.

MOUNTAIN CITY — Dallas Jasper Morefield, age 84, of 740 Sprucy Lane, Mountain City, TN, passed away Friday, November 5, 2010, at the Veterans Administration, Mountain Home, Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie N. and Relda Gentry Morefield. He was a native of Johnson County, where he served in the US Army during World War II and Korea. He was a carpenter and a retired farmer for many years.

Dallas enjoyed cooking, hunting, fishing and playing bingo. He was a member of Dewey Christian Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy Morefield; and two sisters, Ruby Danner and Virgie Forrester; three brothers, Oscar, Carson and Emmett Morefield; and sister-in-law, Wanda Morefield.

Survivors include: one daughter; Betty Morefield, two sons; Lester Morefield and Jack Morefield, all of Mountain City, Tennessee; sister-in-law, Virginia Morefield, of Mountain City, Tennessee; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 7, 2010, in the Charles B. Hux Memorial Chapel of the Hux-Lipford Funeral Home with Rev. Ron Manuel officiating.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. prior to the service.

Military honors will be at 3:00 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010, at the Wilson Cemetery.

Guy D. Gentry, age 79, 718 University Parkway, died Saturday, February 24, 2007, at the Johnson City Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

He was a native of Johnson Co. and a son of the late Clayton and Rader Gentry.

Mr. Gentry retired from Baxter after thirty years of service. He was a member of Buffalo Ridge Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by three brothers: Charles, Ray and Floyd Gentry; and a sister, Eureka Gentry.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene Wilson Gentry, of the home; one son, Guy Gentry Jr., of Gray; three daughters, Carolyn S. Light, of Gray, Linda K. Mr. Gentry was a native of Elizabethton and had lived most of his life in Johnson City. He was the son of the late Clayton Gentry and Radar Bowers Gentry. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one sister, Eureka Gentry; four brothers, Guy Gentry, Floyd Gentry, Charles Gentry and Ray Gentry; one step brother, B.O. Beard.

Mr. Gentry was a retired construction worker. He was of the Catholic faith.

Shelby Gentry Gray, 84, passed away unexpectedly after a sudden medical issue on February 22, 2023. She is survived by her son, W. Martin Myers (Sonja); daughter, Theresa Myers; one sister, Barbara Gregory (Danny); two brothers, Dean Gentry and Norman Gentry (Dolores); three grandchildren, W. Colin Myers, Brianna Myers and Dana Roebuck (Toliver); and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in glory by her parents, Clyde and Versie Gentry. Phillip Paul Gentry, age 67, of Mountain City passed away on Sunday May 13, 2018 in the Johnson City Medical Center. He was born on December 23, 1950 to the late Mark P. Gentry and Lena B. Shores Gentry.

Phillip was a 1968 graduate of JCHS. Following high school, Phillip joined the United States Army and served during Vietnam. He retired from C.M. of Damascus, Virginia following 42 years of service. Phillip was a member of the Laurel Bloomery Volunteer Fire Department for several years and was a proud farmer, which he enjoyed very much.

Phillip was a member of Highlands Fellowship of Abingdon, VA, where he volunteered and ministered in their food pantry.

Those left to cherish his memories include his wife, Betty Fenner Gentry; step children: Barbara Robinette and husband Jon, Johnna Robbins and husband Tom, Michael Cook and wife Sandy and Matthew Cook and wife April; eleven step grandchildren, eight step great grandchildren; aunt, Hassie Mitchell; special friend, Paul Morrison and several cousins.

James E. Trivette, Sr., 84, of Orrville, formerly of Tennessee, died Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Smithvile-Western Care Center in Wooster. He was born May 28, 1933 in Mountain City, TN to the late Russell and Estie (Gentry) Trivette and has lived in Wayne County since 1950.

Jim married Inez Dowell on October 28, 1950 in Mountain City, TN and she preceded him in death in 2016. He was employed as a truck driver for over 40 years, working for Georgia Pacific; Louisiana; and Mor-Flow. He also drove for the Amish community. Jim was a member of the Dalton Baptist Church and loved riding his scooter and going for scenic car trips through Holmes County with his daughter.

Surviving are sons, Ron (Rebecca) Trivette of Apple Creek, James Trivette of Orrville and Robert (Melissa) Trivette of Shreve; daughters, Rita (Tom) Balyeat of Massillon and Sue (Alvin) Horst of Orrville; 13 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; 4 great great grandchildren; and sisters, Eva Shupe of Mountain City, TN and Norma (Mike) Hall of Smithville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Inez; grandson, Joshua Trivette; and brothers, Bernest, Ernest and Justin Trivette.

Helen Francis Harper, age 89, of Butler, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at her home. She was born in Johnson County, TN on October 8, 1928 to the late Jessie Frank and Rosa Shupe Harper. Helen was never married and she loved her family and being with them and will be truly missed. Helen was a member of Liberty Christian Church.

Burnice Clyde Gentry, age 73, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday night, November 19, 2017 at his residence, with his family by his side. He was born on February 11, 1944 in Johnson County to Dorothy Absher Gentry and the late Calvin Eugene Gentry. In addition to his father, Burnice was preceded in death by his first wife, Carolyn Ruth Wilson Gentry; sons: Steven Clyde Gentry, Richard Eugene Gentry and Jon David Gentry and a brother, Paul Gentry.

Burnice worked at the JCHS for 21 years as Head Custodian. He had also worked at the Mountain City Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff's Department.

He loved fishing, wrestling, race cars and football. Burnice was a 'jokester' and was always laughing and cutting up. We will miss his sense of humor and his laughter.

He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.

ELIZABETHTON — Robert Elmer "Bug" Ensor, 78, Elizabethton passed away on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, in the Sycamore Shoals Hospital.

A native of Carter County, he was a son of the late Robert Cecil & Cora Ellen Gentry Ensor. He was a 1957 graduate of Unaka High School. He was also a graduate of New Orleans Baptist Theology Seminary with a degree in Music & Religion Education.

He was retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of service. HE served in the Vietnam Era. Robert was a member of the Lynn Valley Baptist Church. He loved writing poetry and sharing his gift with others. He also loved music and working with children.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Stanley and Raymond Ensor; mother and father-in-law, Van & Jewell Edwards; and a sister-in-law, Elaine.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Frank Ensor; three brothers, Howard Ensor and wife Jewel, C. C. Lee "Chug" Ensor, 76, of Clarksville, Tenn., passed into Heaven on Saturday, February 25, 2017, at his home. He was born on March 28, 1940, to Cecil and Cora Ellen Ensor.
Mr. Ensor graduated from Unaka High School in 1958. He joined the Army and retired many years later.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Stanley, Raymond and Robert "Bug" Ensor; and two nephews, Randy and Ricky Ensor.
Survivors include his loving wife of almost 36 years, Laura Schlosser Ensor; three sons, Chad and Gregory, of the home, and Michael Ensor, daughter-in-law, Kim Ensor, granddaughter, Danielle Ensor, all of Elizabethton; two brothers, Howard (Jewel) Ensor and Ernest "Pete" (Kathy) Ensor; three sisters, Marie (Tom) Oxendine, Ruby Corder and Lynda (Tom) Vaughn; and three sisters-in-law, Phyllis, Nyoka and Joyce Ensor; one uncle, Frank (Evelyn) Gentry. He is also survived by his in-laws, Bryan (Diana) Schlosser, Deborah (Chuck) Tesnow, Gary (Janet) Schlosser, John (Joan) Schlosser and Kevin Schlosser. ELIZABETHTON - Evelyn Marie Ensor Oxendine, 76, Elizabethton, went to be with her Lord, Friday, March 15, 2019 at Ivy Hall Nursing Home following an extended illness.

A native of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Robert Cecil & Cora Ellen Gentry Ensor. Marie was a 1961 graduate of Unaka High School. She was a retired employee of Kingsport Press after 18 years of service. She was very active in her church, Dungan Chapel Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School Teacher, Member of the Church Choir, served as church clerk and active in the WMU for several years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers: Stanley, Raymond, Robert & C. Lee Ensor and two nephews: Randy & Ricky Ensor.

Survivors include her husband: Tom Oxendine, Two Sisters: Lynda Vaughn & husband Tom and Ruby Corder all of Elizabethton. Two Brothers: Howard Ensor & wife Jewell and Ernest "Pete" Ensor & wife Kathy. A special Nephew: Ronnie Ensor, a host of friends, neighbors, nieces & nephews. She was also preceded by two brothers, Dallas Parker and Lloyd Parker Jr. She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church, where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She loved cooking, gardening, spending time with her family, and playing Canasta. She was a 1955 graduate of Johnson County High School.

Lloyd Monroe Parker, age 84, of Marion, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017. He was born on November 12, 1932 to the late Monroe and Virgie Morefield Parker.
In addition to his parents, Lloyd was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte Ann Younce Parker and a daughter, Tracy Ann Parker.

Lloyd was a faithful Dad, Papaw and Great Papaw Parker. He was his family's biggest fan, always there at sporting events cheering them on. He had a special love for all of his family and was always telling people he was where he loved to be - with all of his family.

Lloyd worked various jobs throughout his lifetime including the old Burlington plant. When he wasn't working his 'regular' job, Lloyd enjoyed working on lawn mowers.

He had a special companion whom he loved very much, Lucky the cat, who was always by his side until his death last year.
He was a member of Roan Creek Baptist Church.

Dallas Glenn Parker, age 78, of 496 Taft Eggers Lane, passed away, Friday, April 19, 2019, at his residence following an extended illness. Dallas was born December 1, 1940, in Elizabethton, Tennessee to the late Loyd Parker and Vergie Morefield Parker. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Loyd Parker, Jr., bother-in-law Alfred Wood and sister-in-law Charlotte Parker.

Dallas was a member of the Mountain City Church of Christ, a US Army Veteran. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching his grandchildren play sports. Dallas was a retired electrician and member of IBEW #934.
